1 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2023

Unknown I had just financed the vehicle 2-3 days prior.

2 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/25/2022

Instrument panel cluster failure. Panel goes black while driving and lose power. Vehicle won’t start or shut off. My vehicle was getting serviced at the dealership and they couldn’t start the vehicle. I was told the instrument panel cluster was the problem. I contacted Toyota customer service, and was told they were aware of the issue. They had issued an extended warranty and sent out a letter to all owners this warranty has expired in 2016. If you purchased your vehicle after 2016 you would not have received any notice regarding this. While driving you can’t see you speed, your gear selection, fuel level, lights and no warning lights. The warning is that your vehicle won’t start or shut off.

3 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/06/2021

Instrument cluster panel goes completely out and blank, speedometer lost, and dash lights gone and causing other issues such as not being able to turn off vehicle, loss of cruise control, unable to open trunk, navigation screen unable to turn off, backup camera not functioning, front lights going on and off while driving at night.

4 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2019

Taka inflator, I was in a car accident and none of the air bags deployed. It was head on accident. Also my car just started to speed up. I ended up hitting a billboard.

5 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2019

For a months the car im driving has become more and more dangerous from steering to speed ,braking and drastic wobbling of entire car ive taken pictures and video its unbelievable and outrageous.

6 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2017

I was driving about 35 mph on a city street when the car suddenly shifted into neutral. I tried to put it back in drive, but it kept shifting back into neutral. Luckily there was enough distance between me and the car behind me was that it didn't result in an accident. I held the gearshift in drive with my right hand and steered with my left until I was able to turn off of the street into a parking lot. I could not put the car in park. I pressed the park button and nothing happened. I turned the car off, waited a minute and started it again. I could shift into reverse, but it continued to pop back into neutral when in drive. I had to drive home holding the gearshift in drive with one hand.

7 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/25/2017

The dashboard went black with no visibility to speed, fuel tank gauge, or other instruments in this panel. Also, car would not power off. The instrument panel went dark while I was driving on a city street. The engine power down problem occurred in my driveway upon my return from my city use.

8 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2017

On warmer days the car will not stay in gear and will move into neutral by itself. This happens in drive and reverse. It also does not go into park from neutral. This happens regularly, and happens most often when the car is starting to move from a standstill and drive or reverse are first engaged. The car starts to move and then pops into neutral and stops accelerating.

9 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/03/2016

Combination meter failure while driving. Unable to view speedometer or dash lights. Car sometimes locks up, unable to view abs signal because dashlights become inoperable. Unable to turn car off during dashboard/combination meter failure.

10 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2016

The traction-control system in the Prius is, I believe, dangerous. When the slightest degree of wheel slip is detected, it essentially shuts off power to the wheels for a moment. On a number of occasions, when accelerating to merge in with traffic on a wet road, the system's reaction has slowed me down to what I believe is a dangerous extent. On a couple of occasions, I have ended up stuck in snow because the system is so eager to keep me from spinning wheels at all. I contacted Toyota, and their reply was to the effect that this system is designed to protect the drive train, and that they are not going to do anything to remedy what I see as a dangerous flaw. The only conceivable way such a system could be protecting the drive train would be by limiting engine rpm to a safe point; however, the system goes far beyond just keeping rpm down. Please note that the response to "when did this happen" is not really accurate. It has happened on a number of occasions, and the date listed is merely the most recent occurrence. Also, the speed is just from the most recent occurrence.

11 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2015

I got unintended high speed and I could not stop the car. It stopped because the wheel was hit by the curbe.

12 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2015

When applying the brakes in traffic on a city road with a posted 35 mph speed limit, the car felt as though it surged forward briefly and accelerated followed by the anti-lock brake dashboard light coming on and off and then the brakes finally started working to slow the car down. This has happened about 10 times the last few weeks and has nearly caused me to rear-end other vehicles on the road.

13 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/31/2015

While driving uphill on a curved, shoulder-less road, my car spontaneously shifted into neutral, causing it to lose all power as well as power brake. I attempted to physically hold the gear shift in "drive", but this did not bring power back, nor did it change the light on the dash from "neutral". At first the car would shift into reverse, and I was able to back into a wider part of the road. It then stopped shifting into any gear. I ended up having the car towed home in neutral, with poor (non-power) braking. I've since done a google search and see that this is a recurrent problem with 200-something Priuses, based on consumer affairs, Toyota nation, Prius online, and car problem zoo.

14 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2015

On may 16, 2015, while driving my second-generation 2007 Toyota Prius on the freeway, I experienced a sudden loss of power, along with the illumination on the instrument panel of the malfunction indicator light, master warning light and hybrid warning light. I was able to maneuver the car to the side of the road and summon emergency help. A nearby Toyota dealership replaced the hybrid inverter water pump, which fixed the problem. However, the dealership did not advise me of a safety recall. Toyota customer experience center today stated that the original hybrid inverter water pump was replaced on April 7, 2011, under Toyota limited service notice a0n; hence, Toyota refused my phone request for reimbursement of my may, 2015, repair expense. The 2011 "a0n" replacement pump appears to have failed by the same failure mechanism leading to recall campaign "c0u", which is different from the a0n failure mechanism.

15 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 09/29/2014

2007 Prius dashboard lights malfunction - completely dark. See nhsta # 10544698 and many other complaints regarding dsashboard lights/cluster going completely dark and engine will not shut off. This is an extremely serious safety issue and dealerships will not repair for free. The part needed is a combination meter/cluster that costs around $1000 to repair from the dealer. Please everyone - push for national recall as this is an extremely dangerous safety issue.

16 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2014

The combination meter display ( speedometer) will not illuminate. Toyota knows of this issue. This is a safety issue as driver are unable to know the speed of their vehical. Toyota issue a extended warrenty but in most cases refuses to replace the part as it is difficult to reporduce.

17 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/17/2013

At approximately 11:20 am, I was waiting to have my car washed at a drive through car wash. A Chevrolet pickup truck had completed being washed and was stopped at the exit. The green light came on at the start of the car wash for me to proceed. I moved forward when suddenly the car lurched forward at what seemed to be top speed. I jammed my foot of the brake pedal and held it down but the car continued speeding. I eased the car into the left side wall of the car wash to slow down the momentum, but to no avail. I crashed into the back of the truck. The hood of the Prius went under the truck rear bumper. The air bags did not deploy. The Prius has been declared at total loss. The consumer stated neither the letter from Toyota nor the bosch report indicated an examination of an electronic acceleration system. Updated 04/28/14.

18 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 04/29/2013

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that while driving 7 mph and pulling into a parking space, he attempted to engage the brakes and it failed to stop the vehicle. The contact mentioned that the vehicle kept moving forward, went over a divider, and crashed into two vehicles. A police report was filed and no injuries were reported. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicles front bumper was repaired. The failure and current mileage was 112,000. Updated 06/25/13.

19 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2010

Pulling into parking lot stopped had brakes on (witness to brakes on). Removed seatbelt reached to turn car off. The car accelerated on its own could not stop by applying brakes. Hit two parked pickups which stopped my car.

20 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Prius. While driving approximately 65 mph she took her foot off of the accelerator and the vehicle continued to accelerate. She engaged the brakes and then tapped them slowly in order to slow the vehicle down. She was forced to shift into neutral gear to stop the vehicle. The contact stated that she experienced the acceleration failure three times in one weekend and during the last two failures the vehicle did correct itself. The floor mats were not near the accelerator pedal during the failures. She called the dealer and was advised that her vehicle was no longer under warranty and she would have to pay for the vehicle to be repaired. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The approximate failure mileage was 41,000 and the current mileage was 42,502.

21 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2010

Toyota Prius 2007 -- while stuck in heavy traffic, my car lurched forward and struck the car in front of it, which in turn hit the car in front. My foot was on the brake since traffic was at a standstill. Applying the brake harder did not stop the car in time to prevent the accident. There were no injuries. This never occurred before. The car has 19,000 miles. Spoke with Toyota dealership (smithtown Toyota). They denied that there is a problem and said we had a simple accident. Toyota said that this problem does not and has never existed.

22 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2010

Summary: my car began accelerating while I was in park. I own a 2007 Toyota Prius. Two days ago, I drove to my destination, pulled into a parking spot, and turned off the car. I was early, so I turned the car back on (so I could listen to the radio while I waited). The car was in park and I did not have my feet on any pedals. The car was on for less than a minute when it began to drive forward. I both heard the sound of the motor engaging and visually processed that the car was moving. I immediately stepped on the brake hard and the car immediately came to a stop. My 4-year-old was distressed because the rolling and hard stop made a big jolt. The car was still in park. I released the brake pedal and the car stayed still. I do not know if this is related, but my car headlights randomly turn off while I am driving. If I toggle the switch off and back on, they always come back on. I took it to the local dealer, where the repair guy told me they frequently see this problem, and all they do is replace the headlights (which made no sense to me, because the bulbs aren't burned out). I would say this problem happens about once a week.

23 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 04/13/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Prius. While driving at speeds of 30 mph, the vehicle exhibited abnormal surging and the headlights became inoperable. The vehicle had not been received any repairs to correct the failure. The failure mileage was 18,195 and the current mileage was 18,200.

24 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 04/08/2010

1. My partner left work at @ 4 pm and started to drive home. It was a clear day with no precipitation. He was about a mile away from work proceeding west on NJ state route 561 when he came to a stop 1-2 feet behind a truck at a stoplight. He had his foot on the brake. 2. He was caught off guard as the car accelerated forward into the truck ahead of him without his doing anything to the accelerator. Damage was caused to the trucks bumper and to the Prius' bumper and hood. We had never had this occur in the car and had no other problems prior to this incident. 3. In the split-second he had to react, he jammed his foot on the brake and tried to deploy the p button on the dash, but the p button did not engage nor light up as green. A police report was made and the car was driven home. The local Toyota dealer, where the car was purchased and serviced, was contacted and they asked us to contact Toyota "experience," and we gave a full report and received a case #: 1004081978. We then brought the car to the dealer's body shop the next day and awaited our insurance claims adjuster and the "experience" team to come and get the data off the computer to see what might have caused the accident. We will have the physical damage to the car repaired (damage to bumper and hood) as soon as the "experience" team is able to get the data.

25 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2010

I have experienced two episodes where my 2007 Prius accelerated uncontrollably. One was while backing out of a driveway by my classroom onto the street. I put my foot on the accelerator and the car literally took off backwards like a rocket. I removed my right foot from the gas pedal and applied the brakes--nothing happened!! I ended up with both feet on the brake across the street in parking spaces by the library. This happened Dec. 22 at 2:15, we were dismissed early for christmas break, if it had been any other day this street is used by teachers to transfer elementary students to the library for the after school program. My husband called the Toyota dealership and reported this, he was told our car was not on the recall list. The latest incident was last week, April 7 at 7:35 in the morning. I pull into the school parking lot driving very slowly to my parking space, I start to turn into the space, I removed my right foot from the gas, and for the second time it takes off like a rocket and does not react to brake application. In front of my parking space is a drop off and then a concrete block wall, I turned the wheel sharply to the right to avoid these, did a partial donut turn, ended up once again with both feet pressing the brake as far as possible. After I had caught my breath, I looked around, no one was coming into the parking lot so I slowly released the brake, carefully put my foot on the gas, the car responded normally, and I pulled into the parking space. The Prius is now at the dealership where they say the car isn't displaying any problems--of course it isn't, not until next time. We stated that we would not pick up the Prius until it was fixed, so now we are waiting for Toyota's new Smart team to come. Honestly, I know that if my foot isn't on the accelerator, the car should not take off like a rocket!! this is a danger not only to myself, but to anyone else on the road with me. I've been fortunate twice, but what about next time??.

26 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2010

I am writing to explain two problems I have had with my Toyota Prius. I want to have a documented of report of these problems in the event that they result in a serious accident, as I fear they might. I have experienced these problems on a number of occasions. The first problem occurs whenever I drive over rough or uneven payment. When the traction control kicks in, it feels as if the car is surging and it is necessary to step on the brake, sometimes with both feet, very hard in order to get the car to slow down or stop. I have taken the car in for this problem a couple of times. I have driven cars with traction control in the past and never felt the surging that occurs with the Prius, when driving other cars using other traction control systems. The other issue with the car is that occasionally, when accelerating, my normally silent Prius makes a loud revving noise. Whenever I hear this noise, I immediately take my foot off the gas. Thankfully, so far, the noise stops and the car slows down. The noise does not occur every time I accelerate, but it seems to be happening with increasing frequency. I am not sure if other Prius owners, especially those who have been involved in accidents, have reported this issue or noticed the revving noise prior to their accidents. But, I thought it might be an important piece of the puzzle that should be reported. I hope this information is useful. Quite honestly, I am a concerned each and every time I get into my car. But, with a year remaining on my lease I have little choice but to engage in what I feel is increasingly a game of Toyota owner russian roulette to get to school and do all the things I need to do.

27 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2010

1) two times my car has accelerated on its own, and I had to feather the gas pedal to get it to stop accelerating, which took under a minute to correct. 2)when braking the car, if you hit sand or a bump which causes the slippery light to come on, the car transistions from generating power, to all brakes, at which point the car accelerates as there is an interruption and a short period of time where there is no breaks. 3)when you are coming to a stop such as at a bank drive-thru,when placing the car in park while only the electric system was running,if the motor turns on while still in park, the entire car launches forward 1-2 feet, extremely dangerous.

28 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Prius. The contact was driving approximately 65 mph. When pressure was applied to the accelerator pedal the vehicle would not exceed over 45 mph. The gear was shifted from neutral into the park position. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road and turned the engine off. The vehicle restarted after waiting for a minimum period of one minute. The vehicle resumed to normal. The contact was waiting on the second recall notification letter which provides the recall remedy. The failure mileage was unknown. The current mileage was 35,000.

29 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2010

I have been driving a 2007 Toyota Prius since July 2007. The hid headlights switch off automatically while driving. Sometimes the left hid switches off but the right headlights stays on. The headlights turn off but the display from the inside says that headlights are turned on. The headlights come on if I turn the headlights off and turn them back on then both of them are working till they switch off again during driving. Almost got in a t-bone accident when the other driver did not see me. If I am driving using cruise-control, the car seem to speed up a bit just for a sec a or two when you initially apply brakes.

30 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2010

My 2007 Toyota Prius was in park, engine running. I then pushed on the gas and the pedal stuck. I turned the car off, and the engine stopped revving. I then turned the car back on and the car ran fine. I am presently in s. Carolina and will drive to canada next week with my two children, so am very concerned about getting in the car. What should I do?.

31 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2010

2007 Toyota Prius accelerated on its own.

32 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 02/22/2010

This has happened dozens of times, to myself and my wife. We are braking, and whilst braking drive over a pothole or drain. The traction control comes on, and the car disengages the brakes and the car lurches forward. After clearing the pothole, the traction control then disengages, and the brakes re-engage. Several times, I have come close to hitting the car in front. Conditions: clear, sunny, dry roads. Car: Toyota Prius, year 2007.

33 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2010

I am experiencing momentary brake failure while driving over bumpy roads in my 2007 Prius similar to that described by owners of some 2010 Priuses (. . Read more...

34 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2010

Abs, vsc, brake failure.

35 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2010

I have a 2007 Prius the following has occurred any time driving over rough patches of road or over rr tracks: the car loses traction and power for a sort time until smooth pavement returns. The vsc lamp on the dash shows up when this happens. I shudder to think what would occur on a rough mountain road or in wet weather. This type of event sounds very much like what's being reported by the drivers of the 2010 Prius. In 47 years of driving I've never had a car react in this way. I've compensated by driving cautiously and wait for traction to return but it doesn't feel quite right when it happens.
