Description of safety defect: I am reporting an uncorrected factory design defect in the 5th-generation Toyota Prius (2024 model) that constitutes an immediate and ongoing daytime driving hazard. Under standard operation, whenever the vehicle's headlights are activated during daytime hours—conditions legally mandated by massachusetts state law, such as during rain, heavy fog, snow, dusk, or dawn—the driver's 7-inch multi-information display (mid) speedometer cluster and the central multimedia touchscreen plunge into an aggressive, low-brightness night profile. When this occurs in daylight ambient environments, heavy glare can completely wash out both digital screens, rendering the speedometer, safety alerts, warning lights, and navigation maps illegible to the driver. Manufacturer response: the vehicle's digital 'day mode' software toggles and the lower-dash manual instrument panel adjustment buttons completely fail to override or un-dim this behavior when headlights are active. System reboots and ambient sensor inspections do not change the state. I have formally presented this vehicle to an authorized Toyota dealership and directly escalated the issue to Toyota motor sales corporate. Both parties have officially stated that the vehicle is 'operating as designed' and refused to issue a technical remedy or calibration update. Safety risk: by hard-coding an un-overrideable night-dimming profile to the headlight circuit, Toyota has built an active safety hazard. Drivers are forced into an unacceptable compromise: either drive illegally with headlights off during a daylight rainstorm to be able to read their speedometer, or turn headlights on to comply with the law and drive blind to their actual traveling speed, warning lights, and driving telemetry. This extreme driver distraction severely increases the probability of an accident.
My Prius suddenly malfunctions and goes berserk randomly. No other way to describe it. I've taken it into the dealer twice, and I'm not confident I'm driving a safe car. I've not done anything to the car and it has not been in an accident. It's unclear why it does it. When it has an episode it is not safe to drive, won't turn on and won't turn off. The alarm goes crazy. Nothing works, all the dash lights turn on. I have videos. This has happened about five times and I've been called back from the dealer to pick it up. I"m not confident it is safe to drive, and I don't think Toyota is taking my concerns seriously. The vehicle has about 7400 miles and is otherwise pristine. All service is up to date. It is a lease.
Background: nothing failed or malfunctioned. There is no incident. This reports describes a design defect that puts the driver at risk. The dealer has acknowledged that the cars performs this way and says it cannot be fixed. Toyota customer service says this is how the car operates and short of a recall will do nothing about it. Problem: when the headlights are turned on, the dash and screen become so dim that they are only visible at night. If it is necessary to turn the lights on during the day, the screen and dash are too dim to read. There needs to be some way to set the brightness such that it overrides the nighttime setting. Driving with the lights on all the time is considered safer (and it is the law if it is raining out). This defect means the driver has to choose between having the lights on and being able to consistently see the dash and screen.
There is a safety design flaw with the dash lights. If the headlights are on the dash lights are turned down to a significantly lower illumination automatically and cannot be turned back up to full brightness. This is a big issue when driving with your head lights on during daylight rain/fog. The dash lights won't turn up to full brightness and are very difficult to read, especially for anyone over 50 years old when the head lights are turned on. Alabama law requires head lights be on, not just drl, but head lights. The dash is very dim. This has never been an issue before with any car I have owned.
