Parking Brake problem #1

The contact owns a 2013 Toyota Prius v. The contact stated while driving 35-40 mph, the abs, traction control, parking brake, and the malfunction indicator warning lights were illuminated. Additionally, the brake pedal vibrated while being depressed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and dtc: c1391 was retrieved. The dealer determined that the brake booster pump assembly and the brake booster assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the repair could not be covered under Toyota campaign number: 20te07; because the program had expired. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

Parking Brake problem #2

The contact owns a 2016 Toyota Prius. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 16v741000 (parking brake). The part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure.

Parking Brake problem #3

2010 Toyota Prius was placed in "parking" in my home garage, as I turned off the "heating" switch to the seat, the car rolled forward on its own and hit a work bench chair in front of the vehicle. No personal injury was sustained, but the car had some dents to the front end.

Parking Brake problem #4

My 2010 Toyota Prius would not start after a brief 45 minute lunch with friends. When I released the parking brake and let off the brake pedal I didn't know the car was stuck in neutral. This error was on the dashboard "malfunction when parking, park in a flat place and apply parking brake securely". When I let off the brake the car rolled back into the middle of the parking lot. I had two coworkers in the car with me; they got out and pushed the car out of the way to a flat location. Car still was disabled. I called Toyota roadside assistance and waited an hour for a tow truck; after about 45-50 minutes of waiting I was hit by a woman that wasn't paying attention; she backed into the side of my disabled car. I was pressing on the horn and she didn't hear. The impact must have freed some stuck component or something because 2 hours later when the tow truck finally came, the car worked again; no warning lights etc. Toyota looked at the car and says there is nothing wrong. I took a photo to document the warning message (plus have 2 witnesses).

Parking Brake problem #5

My 2004 Toyota Prius has left me stranded for 15 minute periods of time while parked on my street. All the dashboard lights come on as well as the following red warning "caution - transmission "p" lock mechanism is abnormal. Park in a flat place and apply brake. " I was parked on a mild incline and I always use my parking brake. This however makes me suspicious of whether the parking brake is hardy enough to work when parked on the crown of a street parking space. I applied and re-applied my parking brake without success. I open and closed the hood without success. I open and closed my door without success. I placed all my passenger seat items on the floor without success. I held the ignition button without success. I placed my key fob into the ignition without success. And when trying to remove my key fob so I could go call a tow truck, the entire dashboard housing for the ignition key came loose and dis-articulated in my hand. I just carefully pushed the plastic housing back into the dashboard. . . . However, that was depressing to see. Finally, after all the tinkering for 15 minutes, my car finally turned off. I was then able to turn it back on and drive away without a problem. In retrospect, this has happened on at least 4 occasions since December 24, 2009 and I just assumed that during the bout with my injured leg that I was not adequately placing enough force on the parking brake. . . . . But should this happen so easily?? I have seen many other similar complaints online. I would like to know if this is part of the whole safety issues with cars not being able to stop while running. Thanks.

Parking Brake problem #6

Summary: my car began accelerating while I was in park. I own a 2007 Toyota Prius. Two days ago, I drove to my destination, pulled into a parking spot, and turned off the car. I was early, so I turned the car back on (so I could listen to the radio while I waited). The car was in park and I did not have my feet on any pedals. The car was on for less than a minute when it began to drive forward. I both heard the sound of the motor engaging and visually processed that the car was moving. I immediately stepped on the brake hard and the car immediately came to a stop. My 4-year-old was distressed because the rolling and hard stop made a big jolt. The car was still in park. I released the brake pedal and the car stayed still. I do not know if this is related, but my car headlights randomly turn off while I am driving. If I toggle the switch off and back on, they always come back on. I took it to the local dealer, where the repair guy told me they frequently see this problem, and all they do is replace the headlights (which made no sense to me, because the bulbs aren't burned out). I would say this problem happens about once a week.

Parking Brake problem #7

The parking brake light in my 2005 Toyota Prius came on and shortly after that, the abs light came on too. I checked to make shure the brake was released and it was because I was driving the car at the time of the incident. As a result of the problem, the car is only giving me an average of 32 mpg, previously I was getting and average of 48 mpg, the battery also seems to be draining its energy faster than usual. I took my car to the penske Toyota dealership in downey, CA. 90241, and the service advisor told me that this car was not included in a recall that Toyota is conducting on some cars, therefore if I wanted them to inspect the car to locate the problem they would need to charge me for the inspection plus whatever repairs are needed. I feel that because of all the brake problems that Toyota is having with their cars, they should at least inspect the car for free. The problem happened all of a sudden while driving. I felt the car was getting a bit sluguish after the lights came on and then noticed the mpg started to go down. Right now the car only gives me an average of 32 mpg.

Parking Brake problem #8

True! gear problem! remember airbus flipping our of control when they came out with fly by wire? the joy stick gear is default to shift into neutral when normal push bring it in to reverse. No way to put it in neutral. I thought the same thing & was in denial until I realize that its impossible to put it into neutral when thing is speeding out of control. Don't take it lightly- I did bought a 2010 Prius just now & realize - u can't put it - in neutral. I was in denial. Also, ventilator fan suddenly accelerates when u try to switch the modes.

Parking Brake problem #9

I left my 2008 Toyota Prius running and had to run back into a home where I'd just left a sales appointment. Eventhough I had the key fob in my pocket, I noticed out of the corner of my eye as I was crossing the street back towards the house that my car was careening into the Buick parked across the street. I ran and jumped in and steered it away from t-boning the parked Buick, but could not keep it the driver's side of the Prius from scraping along the driver's side corner of the Buick's rear bumper.

Parking Brake problem #10

2010 Prius ii - when in park, or just slightly on the brakes and the engine switches from electronic to gas motor, the car rocks forward 1-3 inches. Very terrifying, but according to kendall Toyota of eugene, oregon, this is "normal". I don' t know of any world in which a car moving on its own while in park is normal.

Parking Brake problem #11

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) to:NHTSA. Webmaster@dot. Gov from:[xxx] subject:2006 Prius brakes comments: I have a 2006 Prius and have had intermittent brake problems(I bought the car new from the Toyota dealer in 2007). The brakes do not always engage immediately when pressing the brake pedal. It feels as if the brakes are slipping before actually stopping the car. In light of the recent Toyota brake recalls, I now have concerns that my car may also have brakes that may fail. [xxx].

Parking Brake problem #12

The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that while applying the emergency brake the pedal and bolts fell off. He drove the vehicle to the dealer to have the emergency brake repaired. The contact is aware of the safety risk because the emergency brake can't be applied when the vehicle is parked on a steep hill. The failure mileage was 60,000.

Parking Brake problem #13

Not just the brakes, it's also the park button on the 2010 Toyota Prius. Besides the cars brakes not working and being the cause of a recent collision, there is another safety issue. The car has a park button and that I accidentally pushed when I was driving, thinking I was reaching for the heater button. The car completely shut off. I was on the freeway and the car engine was cut off. When I stepped on the gas, the car would not go. I was almost hit in the rear end by a semi truck until I could get the car pulled over and stopped. Toyota should have a safety feature on this car so that the parking button will not operate while the car is being driven.

Parking Brake problem #14

I bought a 2010 Toyota Prius ii November 2009. Within 1 month period, I had experience two separate brake problem. Once was passing a railway track and the other time was making a right turn. Both times I stepped the brake to reduce speed and failed. That means the brake did not reduce the speed of the vehicle. Fortunately, no car was in front me and no accident happened. I then reported to my dealer and sent my car back to check. The dealer told me they failed to replicate the situation and everything was normal. Nothing was done. They then talked to Toyota customer service line and Toyota said it is normal to feel the brake did not engage when crossing a bump. I was really disappointed.

Parking Brake problem #15

Repeated braking at slow speeds resulted in both abs and brake on signals, owner's manual says stop driving and contact dealer immediately. Drove slowly to dealer who ran diagnostics. ($98)told to replace computer ($2000) not in stock. Told ok to drive until replacement. Adjusted something. Warning lights operated as expected. Situation recurred twice. Owner's manual indicated knowledge of possible failure. Also "parking brake abnormal status has appeared twice. No explanation in manual.

Parking Brake problem #16

My spouse owns a 2007 Prius. On or about 7/18/08, she was backing down our driveway. She stopped the car, believed that she had placed it in park, and began to step out. The car was not in park, and took off in reverse, running over her leg with the front tire and dragging her across the street. She escaped with large skin scrapes, bruises and a painful leg.

Parking Brake problem #17

The consumer started the vehicle and noticed that the steering was very difficult. After driving for two blocks, the dash light had come on and the steering had become easier. The general warning symbol had come on, which meant the vehicle needed to be taken to the dealer. The brake light had been continuously on. When the emergency brakes were applied, the vehicle did not behave as if it were activated. The ignition relay was replaced per warning light.
