37 Wheel problem of the 2016 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 04/15/2018

We purchased a new 2016 Prius from longo Toyota in March 2016. Everything has been fine until March 2018 when we have had two incidents where the next morning a tire was completely flat when it was perfectly fine the night before. The oe tires are toyo nanoenergy a29 p195/65r15. Now it has happened a third time, April 15, 2018. It is parked in my garage overnight so its impossible to be tampered with. All three instances have been exactly the same. The cause has been a small hole in the outside sidewall. I have to believe that these tires are defective since it has now happened to 3 out of the 4 original tires. There is no evidence of a nail, screw, debris, etc. , that would cause this small hole/tear. We have 30k miles on the tires and the tread is still pretty decent.

38 Wheel problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 01/01/2018

My car has a clunking/rattle sound when going over bumps or uneven roads even without brakes slightly engaged. It also does this when driving over 60 mph on smooth roads but if I turn wheels slightly left or right the sound stops and when I turn them back straight it begins again. It is so bad that you can feel it on your feet and strongly thru the steering colum. Also the front tires wear heavily on the inside edge. It feels like steering column may be loose at times. Also the horn keeps blowing fuses and when you put a new fuse in the drivers side door will shock you e every time you try to exit the vehicle. And the outside air temp will not read temp. I had new tires put on to replace old front tires and rotated all and balanced and just had new brakes put on from dealship. Radio reception is horrible even though other vehicles in same area get great reception. I love this car but I did buy it used so I am not sure if all recalls have been fixed or if they need fixed again. It seems like a lot of mechanics have no idea what they are doing.

39 Wheel problem of the 2017 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/23/2017

On I-75 @70 miles/hr, with around 800 mileage new Prius, toyo tire of the rear tire popped out and rolled on the I-75 without any warning lights but with some gas smell, putting all the occupants to high risk of crash on the busiest freeway, and the agony of the incident. I towed my Prius to valdosta Toyota, even though Toyota care should cover roadside assistance, they charged me for towing and putting new tire. There was a problem with the Prius gas system or toyo tire of Prius. After around 100 miles I tried to put in gas, Prius tank didn't take gas, went to clear water Toyota and got it repaired, despite explaining Toyota care and less than 1k mileage, they charged me for repair. Contacted Toyota care and my local dealer, they said valdosta and clear water Toyota should not have charged. The dealers say Toyota care need to reimburse the repairs at least, as they can't compensate the agony of losing a tire in the middle of the freeway. Toyota care doesn't even bother to register a complaint and investigate the issue and determine Prius gas system or toyo tire is under fault. Even after going through 3 Toyota dealers and contacting Toyota many times, there is no solution, so a) who investigates the issue? b) how to ensure Toyotacare follows their plan? c) how to bring responsibility to Toyota or toyo, their supplier, should be under warranty as part of the car warranty? d) how to ensure the kinds of horrifying incidents do not happen to any other family in future?.

40 Wheel problem of the 2017 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/22/2017

While driving on I-75 there seems to be a spark caused fuel to leak and burn back tire and the tire rolled off the freeway putting all the five passengers into a hazardous situation on the I-75 freeway. We smelled smell of tire and gas leak. Fortunately, we were able to pull off the freeway. It was reported to Toyota and their dealers multiple times. No one even bothered or concerned about the issue or safety of passengers.

41 Wheel problem of the 2017 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/05/2017

My complaint has to do with a design "feature" of my new vehicle. Having owned it less than a week, no related incident has occurred. However, I see an unnecessary risk due to this design. My new car, a 2017 Prius 4 touring, comes with no spare tire. There are three Prius models like that, even for the 2018 model year. Have you considered the related safety aspects of that Toyota decision? in the western us, especially, there are many paved roads with little or no traffic and spotty, if any, cell phone service. Typically, they are in desert areas, scorching in the summer, frigid in winter, with towns far apart. If a driver of a car like mine has a tire blowout in such a remote area, he/she is literally stranded. The supplied tire repair kit will not help in case of a blowout. Average owners will not even know they are without a spare tire until they need one. More than an inconvenience, this could be fatal to the driver and passengers in extreme heat or cold. The driver's only hope is that another vehicle will happen along to help. A risk like that does not justify a manufacturer's cutting costs to boost profits. Imho, the NHTSA should take the following actions: 1 - any car sold new without a usable spare should be recalled and retrofitted. 2 - manufacturers should not be allowed to sell cars in the USA without a usable spare. Thank you for allowing me to voice my opinion. I hope you will agree that absence of a spare tire is an unnecessary risk.

42 Wheel problem of the 2014 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/07/2017

I bought a 2014 Toyota Prius c 10-07-2017 from carvana with less than 30,000 miles. With 2 new tires in the front bridgestone ecopia 175/65 r15. It wobbles at speeds above 50 mph and sloppy steering the road was dry. Well at that time the the car was still under warrant with carvana so if I change my mind about it I could get another car. Searched the web for similar complaints and found a few. So we took the car to a place that sold bridgestone tires to replace the rear tires that were original but goodyear brand same size. So now we have 4 tires the same and quess what happen the same wobbly driving and sloppy steering at 50 mph. So we took the car back to the shop. The mechanic said I guess that is why they put the 2 new tires in the front to corrrect the problem but what you need after my test drive is a 4 wheel alignment. So I said go ahead and do it. During the process the alignment mechanic guy said the front passed but the rear failed. So they called Toyota dealership and asked if they were special shims to fix the rear alignment. The Toyota dealership said there are no parts for that because that car model does not require a rear alignment. The c in Toyota Prius means c is for city driving only. We were stunned. I said I knew they had a reason why they got rid of the car but can you fix it ? the mechanic said it is a possible factory defect and we see some of those sometimes but I think we can fix it and solve your problems with that car. We can use some shims that are made for a different type of Toyota car and see if we can get it in proper alignment. I said I am willing to gamble on your expertise go ahead and do it. It is still under warranty with carvana but I do like the hatchback car. After the work was done the test drive proved the success and the problem was gone. Oh and by the way it drives great on the highway and I still own it.

43 Wheel problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 03/04/2017

My 2008 Prius (67,500 miles) regularly serviced at the Toyota dealer had a catastrophic brake failure while I was going in reverse down my drive way . I have done the same maneuver every day for more than 20 years in this driveway and never had a problem. As the brakes failed I attempted to pump the brake pedal more to no avail. The car crossed the street and went in the neighbor yard across from my driveway. The car is totaled and I believe it was a complete brake failure that caused the accident. I would like Toyota to compensate me for the total loss of my car.

44 Wheel problem of the 2013 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 03/04/2017

A warning light came on indicating low tire pressure. I stopped immediatly in the closest parking lot. The sidewall on my goodyear weatherhandler fuel maxx tires had split apart, about 12 inches total in 3 spots. The cords of the sidewall were showing. These were 65,000 mile tires purchased January 2016. They had about 28,000 miles on them at the time they failed. I just finished a 2500 mile trip using the interstates. If they failed there, it would have killed us. God was watching over us. The tire was totally flat in 5 minutes. These were purchased from tire kingdom. After getting the spare on, I drove the 2 miles to the store I purchased them from. They explained they no longer had any stock, as it was a purchase their chain made from sears when they went out of business. I was upset they sold me left over tires. They offered to replace the failed tire, but I need someone to replace all of them. They are a hazard. I am afraid to drive the car. I will contact the manufacturer and see what they will do for me. The date code on the tires show they were 2 1/2 years old when I purchased them.

45 Wheel problem of the 2007 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/06/2017

Traveling straight ahead, ~30mph on city street , front tire (michelin dt008-35670-mi, 185/65r15) blew for unknown reason. Car swerved to right into utility pole, removing right front wheel, wheel connections, fender, headlight. (car "totaled" by insurer. ) steering wheel airbag activated. Driver (sole occupant) suffered fractures of right hand, wrist, 3 ribs and sternum, apparently due to impact of airbag. Driver was wearing belt/harness.

46 Wheel problem of the 2014 Toyota Prius

47 Wheel problem of the 2015 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/17/2016

I was driving down the road and the tire blew out causing me to hit the center divider on the 101 on the driver side front tire which caused the cars ass end to also get scuffed up as will.

48 Wheel problem of the 2016 Toyota Prius

49 Wheel problem of the 2016 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 11/23/2016

If the tire pressure is decressed by the slightest amount the light will go on and stay on. If the temperature is cool the light will go on and stay on. I've brought it back to service 4 times during November and December of 2016. Their scan shows no fault. I purchased the Prius in February 2016 and didn't have this problem until November. The light may come on while driving or sometimes when the car is first started.

50 Wheel problem of the 2013 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 05/11/2016

In heavy rains breaking does not work well. Even at 10 mph if you hit a puddle of water. Can cause a crash. It has happened on a dirt road going at low speed. Back road where water rises and in some heavy rain on the highway.

52 Wheel problem of the 2014 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 02/28/2015

Since the vehicle was purchased, the odometer has been off by about 2 miles per hour at 65, and 3-4 miles per hour at 95. This means that the oboe get is recording 4% higher mileage than what is actually being driven. My car is not alone, many Prius v models have the same problem. Dealership did not have a solution. This not only voided my 100,000 mile warranty 3-4k miles early, but it makes the fuel economy look better on paper than it actually is- a selling point that Toyota takes advantage of. To me, this is just as bad as what Volkswagen did with their diesel vehicles.

53 Wheel problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/15/2014

I was driving my Prius with 130,000 miles last night in a residential neighborhood featuring a counterclockwise,(left-hand) moderate curve. The "circle" ended at an intersection where I was to make a right turn. I turned my steering to the right to cancel the counterclockwise trajectory, but my front wheels seemed to be "locked" in the left turning motion. I slammed the brakes, but could not stop the car from climbing the curb and sideswiping a tree, causing my driver's side front wheel to be shoved backward towards the driver door in the wheel frame. My car is now at a body shop with an agreed $5600. 00 in damage, mostly to the steering assembly, suspension, and wheel/axle. The wheel panel above the wheel will be replaced, and scratches on the front bumper and driver door will be repaired. Work is scheduled to be completed by January 5. I believe that the condition which caused the steering to lock in a left-turn condition without warning on a dry road is a serious manufacturing defect for which I should be reimbursed . Fortunately, there was no traffic and no injuries, and even the tree seems unscathed. This could have been tragic on an interstate or in congested high speed traffic. I have been pleased with my Prius' performance to this point, but believe that Toyota has responsibility for this matter as evidenced by steering related recalls on similar vintage Prius models. I request full reimbursement for my repair, mindful that these expenses could be a lot higher had this failure occurred under different circumstances. I had previously submitted this information to a Toyota inquiry website and have not received an acknowledgement or response form Toyota.

54 Wheel problem of the 2014 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/12/2014

We purchased a new Toyota Prius that came with yokohama all season radials. Because the tire light came on, I checked the air pressure in the tires and set them to the psi as recommended at about 1000 miles. There was a minor imbalance of 3-4 psi in some tires, but no serious under inflation. We noticed some minor road noise and vibration. We had a mechanic install mud flaps and inspect the tires, wheels, and brakes at about 1500 miles to see if there was a visible reason for vibration. There was nothing obvious. We were concerned about the road noise and about 2000 miles we took the car back to the Toyota dealer who inspected the tires, checked the air pressure, and declared that they didn't see anything wrong. At about 3000 miles driving at a slow speed (35 mph or less) in a school zone, we had a complete blow out of the left rear tire. Fortunately, there was a grassy shoulder and no traffic, so we had no injuries or other damage. The tread appeared to separate and there was a sidewall tear starting at the tread. We returned to the Toyota dealer and also showed the tire to three different tire shops (all three sell yokohama tires). The Toyota dealer did not offer an opinion other than tire defect - so we needed to deal with the manufacturer. Two tire shops thought it was a defect (even though they said it was a hassle to get a replacement paid for by yokohama). One shop reported it was a defect unless the tire was under inflated, but they didn't see any wear pattern that indicated under inflation. Because of the blowout and a second suspicious tire of the four, we replaced all four with a different brand. As far as we can tell, the yokohama tire(s) were defective as new on the car.

55 Wheel problem of the 2006 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/09/2014

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that while driving at 55 mph and going over a pot hole, control of the vehicle was lost. The vehicle was airborne and the seat belt disengaged causing the contact to be thrown out the vehicle. Additionally, the front drivers side tire detached from the vehicle and the contact crashed into a ditch. The airbags failed to deploy. A police report was not filed and the contact sustained unknown injuries that required medical attention. The vehicle was towed to a dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 220,000. The VIN was not available. Djr.

56 Wheel problem of the 2006 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 10/06/2014

We were exiting 66 at exit 55 (fairfax CO. Parkway) northern va. We were going 3 mph, a heavy delivery truck hit us going 40 mph pushing us with considerable force into the van in front of us. Our air bags did not deploy, none of them deployed. My husband sustained head injuries from hitting the steering wheel and I was bounced back and forth a few times injuring my head, neck and back. My doctors think my injuries were made worse by the fact that the airbags did not prevent me from being thrown so far forward. We called Toyota and they did not want to investigate the issue.

57 Wheel problem of the 2012 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 09/20/2014

Turning right from a stop sign stop, the car took off in an unintended acceleration and could not be stopped until it hit a curb. The force broke the ball joint of the driver's side wheel causing the wheel to turn approx 45 degrees. The car then skidded about 20 yards and came to a stop with the motor racing. It was a single car crash with no bodily injury.

58 Wheel problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 09/12/2014

At approximately 85,000 miles, I noticed a low humming/rubbing sound coming from my wheels. After having the vehicle inspected, it was found that the front right wheel bearing needed to be replaced. Wheel bearings typically don't need to be replaced until around 150,000-200,000 miles, on average. The technician told me that it wasn't yet loose and that I could replace it within a couple of months. I have now noticed loose steering and the sound has grown louder, so I will be replacing the bearing so that I do not risk the wheel breaking off from my vehicle while driving on the highway to and from work. Having to replace the bearing this early in the vehicle's life seems excessive, and from my online research, it seems that I am not the only one to realize this. I've also had trouble tracking down the part through my local parts stores, which concerns me as well because they don't know why they don't carry the part, or why it is so expensive to order online. Has there been a shortage of this part because of a defect or numerous replacements? if the wheel were to break off while driving on the freeway, it could easily result in a fatal accident. Please investigate.

59 Wheel problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 04/24/2014

We have had two catastrophic failures of continental pro contact tires (195/55-16) - one on 12/11/2012 (right front) and one on 04/24/2014 (left front). Both tires had been in service less than 5,000 miles, were correctly inflated and in no way misused. No road obstacle has hit - the tires simply disintegrated after a few seconds of tire pressure warning light indication. Both look as though a tiger saw had been used to cut around the circumference where the sidewall turns to meet the tread.

60 Wheel problem of the 2013 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 03/27/2014

I had a rear tire blow out for no apparent reason. I did not hit anything. And it appears to be a defect. I did have to drive off road to safely avoid risky situation. The Toyota dealer refused to take up with yokohama. I bought the car only in February this year and barley has any miles on it. The dealership completely unhelpful. This is clearly a defect and safety hazard!.

61 Wheel problem of the 2013 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 03/06/2014

While the car was going down the ramp to the parking basement, the brake in our Prius didn't function even though the driver slammed on it and the car continued to picked up acceleration. None of the airbags deployed either, amazingly. The driver was able to make a right turn and missed the wall/concrete pillar, but the driver hit a parked car and that's what stopped the Prius from moving further.

62 Wheel problem of the 2013 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 12/06/2013

I bought this car in November since the car is new . I wanted to install mud guards so I had to remove each wheel. As I was torquing the wheel nuts, one stud came off. I used a torque wrench 65 ftlb. I went to the dealer they told me that I broke the stud that this is not cover by the warranty. I told them that this studs must have a defect from manufacturing. I hope they don't fail while I'm driving.

63 Wheel problem of the 2012 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/07/2013

I was completing parking the car in a head-in parking space in a parking lot. With my foot on the brake, the car experienced unintended sudden acceleration. The car jumped a concrete sidewalk, crossed the 6-8 foot wide sidewalk, and crashed into a metal security fence.

64 Wheel problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 03/09/2013

Rear wheel bearings failed at 61000 miles.

65 Wheel problem of the 2011 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 10/18/2012

On October 18,2012 I was driving my 2011 Prius 2 on a 2 lane highway at 55 mph when the drivers side rear yokohama tire blew out on the sidewall. I swerved in to the left lane twice before leaving the road, snapping off a utility pole, going down a revine and rolling over end for end and side to side. I ended up in the middle of the back seat on my stomach facing the rear of the car. The drivers seat was broken back and my seatbelt was still on. I was in in the hospital for a month following back surgery. I had 3 cracked vertibre and one cracked rib as well as many bruises. Needless to say the car was totaled and I am still recovering 3. 5 months later.

Failure Date: 10/18/2012

Was driving a 2011 Prius with just under 25,000 miles on October 18, 2012 on a 2 lane highway. A rear tire sidewall blew out. There was a rollover end for end down a very steep and long ditch. There were severe back injuries.

67 Wheel problem of the 2010 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 09/20/2012

This a second pair of new tires we buy. They were worn unevenly. We do tire rotation every 5,000 miles and alignment every 10,000 miles. However, the car its the tires very unevenly. The tire pressure is checked and kept at the given manufacturer recommendations. All my friends that own Toyota's have similar problems. This is a serious issue that could lead to an accident if the tires get torn when driving. Plus we are damaging the environment when we are replacing the tires so often. I had similar tires in a different car, they lasted 90,000 miles. Here I cannot get 25,000 miles out of them.

68 Wheel problem of the 2012 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 08/27/2012

Vehicle is parked outside, and during morning cold start, the vehicle produces a moaning/wooing sound for approx. 50-75 yards with vehicle moving under 25 mph. The sound is being generated from the front wheel wells. Sound generated is related to vehicle speed. The faster the vehicle moves, the more frequent the sound being produced during the first 50-75 yards. Strange sound is gone after that, and does not return until the next cool/cold start. Owner took the vehicle back to dealership for inspection, and dealer took off the front wheel to inspect breaks, wheels, and tires, and was not able to locate or reproduce the problem. Abnormal sound is only produced during morning cold starts and when vehicle is left to cool(I. E. Parking lot at work).

69 Wheel problem of the 2008 Toyota Prius

Failure Date: 07/18/2012

As of 11/2014 there has been a total of 3 wheel bearing issues with my 2008 Toyota Prius. The first occurred in 2012(right rear) and the other two occurred in 2014(both front). This is a real safety concern, since it can cause the wheel to seize and cause a major accident. There is an obvious defect in Toyota's wheel bearings for three to fail on one vehicle and the first failing at only 70,000 miles. Toyota has refused to pay for the $1700 in repairs. There should be a recall because if the wheel seizes or falls off this can cause fatalities. Toyota should look into why one of there factories is producing defective sub-par wheel bearings.
