1 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2025

My daughter and I are leasing our Toyota Rav4 almost paid off. Our last 2 oil changes done by professional the engine has burned off the oil in between the oil changes. I seen multiple complaints for this same issue for other owners and that there's not been any recalls only investigations. I read 1 person their engine caught fire. I'm disabled if what happened to that person's family happened to my Toyota I might not be as lucky as I, my daughter and my oldest daughter who is disabled and needs help moving and I'd have to get my dog out of the car and we all get safely away from the car and pray we were in a safe area no one else gets hurt. This oil burning from these cars is a dangerous safety hazard and expensive. Instead of a investigation recalls are needed to get the malfunctioning pistons replaced before someone physically gets injured or killed. This is a known issue by the Toyota manufacturer and obviously more and more owners are finding and coming forward with complaints. As for me and my daughter the car is not a new model but it's a new vehicle to use and we didn't know about the pistons malfunctioning issues or oil burning off until it happened. Please do a recall so this issue will be resolved not just investigations because investigations aren't helping nor protecting the consumers/owners. Toyota knew/knows of the safety issues and won't step up to the plate to fix something they know is faulty. Oil is burning out of my car's engine in between oil changes, done by a professional, it really needs to be addressed and safety recalls sent out to hold Toyota accountable for something they know is faulty on their cars.

6 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/07/2023

Issue started when I noticed the vehicle was burning oil, hence why I had to keep refilling the oil levels often. This is an issue many other Rav4 owners have reported. However, the problem was made worse when my mother used my vehicle to pick up some family from the nearest airport. On her way home, my engine blew a hole through itself, causing an engine fire. If it wasn't for the swift thinking of my stepfather, she, him, and my brothers could've been seriously injured or killed. I firmly believe this has to do with the reason why the engine was burning oil.

7 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2023

Starting in June 2018, I have had seven episodes of unintended acceleration. (I have owned the car, purchased in private sale, since June of 2013. ) there were common elements to each incident:1. Gradually slowing; 2. Foot on brake; 3. Engine accelerates sharply, a moment before complete stop in first six, a moment after in seventh and last. In each incident able to maintain control as foot already was on brake; yet in three of the incidents, including the last two, the car bucked forward a few inches despite the pressure on the brake. Situation resolved when I turned off the ignition, a reflex developed after the first incident. This last incident was particularly upsetting as I was in a long line of slow moving cars on a relatively narrow road with pedestrians on each side of my car. Each incident has been reported to the local dealer with which I have been trading for many years. They did a thorough inspection when I reported the incidents to them in January of 2020 and again just today after the last incident that occurred on may 19, 2023. They could find nothing wrong and include on their report "tas states suspected driver error, pedal miss [sic] application. " I do not accept this conclusion. I note in the last incident I had come to complete stop momentarily before the engine accelerated and despite my heavy pressure on the brake bucked forward, with control established only when I shut the engine down. During the entire period of these incidents I also have been driving two other vehicles, a 2008 camry and a 2023 camry. I have had no such incidents while driving these two cars. I do not drive with two feet, always the first question asked when such an incident is reported. Finally, I believe my car dates from a period when Toyota was vehemently denying such a problem in their cars when they knew full well that such was the case, a deception for which they were found criminally liable. Such history does not instill confidence in corporate Toyota.

20 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2018

Started to use a quart of oil every few hundred miles. Took it to my local Toyota dealer and they confirmed that it needs the new pistons and rings. Unfortunately, they will not do it under warranty because my vehicle is 4 months past the warranty extension Toyota issued. That policy was for 10yrs or 150,000 miles, my vehicle only has 123,000 miles on it but as mentioned before it is 10 years and 4 months old.

22 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2017

I have a Toyota rav 4 (2008), which I love. It has been a wonderful car. No real problems to speak of. But at around 146,000 miles I was surprised to see my oil light come on 1/4 of the way through my regular maintenance schedule. I added oil and made a mental note to bring it up to my mechanic. Another 1/4 of the way the oil light comes back on. I had to add more oil. My car has 149,000 miles on it now. I have had my car in for maintenance every 5,000 miles since I bought it new. It is now burning about 1 quart every 1200 miles. This just happens to be the amount that Toyota calls a problem and excessive, but my car is out of warranty. I was hoping to keep my car for several more years. This is very disappointing, especially since people have always said get a Toyota, they last forever.

23 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2017

My 2008 Toyota Rav4 goes through excessive amounts of oil. I have to add upwards of a quart a week, after 300-600 miles in that period. It's been an ongoing problem, but I started noticing something was off in the last six months, and tracking it religiously in the last two months or so.

24 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/25/2017

Engine light comes on every approx. 750 miles indicating oil level low. Started doing this 9/5/15 at 90,095 miles. Oil level approx. 1 to 1-1/2 quarts low. Today my husband added more oil. This is still happening and per websites, Toyota recognizes piston design defect, but refuses to repair vehicles out of warranty such as mine.

25 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2016

At 149,000 miles my 2008 Toyota Rav4 started to consume oil. It is currently consuming a little over 3 quarts of oil in 3000 miles. This has caused a noticeable increase in noise in the valve train which I presume is due to oil starvation. I suspect that my vehicle will need total engine replacement at 230,000 miles. This is beyond unacceptable for an auto manufacturer not to recall.

26 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2016

My vehicle is currently consuming 4 quarts approximately every 1,000 miles. The Toyota district parts and service manager declined my request for a loaner vehicle, however, Toyota has approved to reimburse me for any extra oil purchased. They do not have an estimated time of delivery for your part at this time as it is on national backorder with Toyota.

27 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2015

The car is loosing about 1 quart of oil in 1100 miles and it started about 100,000 miles on the car. Apparently this is a common problem, but the Toyota dealer claims this is industry standard.

28 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2014

I've had my 08 Toyota Rav4 for over 4 years now. I get the oil changed on it every 5,000 miles regularly. I got it with about 25,000 miles on it and right around 70,000 miles I noticed that the oil light would come on before I reached my next oil change. It holds about 5 quarts and with being changed every 5,000 miles that means it is burning more then 1 quart every 1,000 miles! my brother-in-law did some research and found out that this is becoming a problem with many Rav4's with the pistons in the 2az fe motor. I love this car so much and it breaks my heart to know that there is something wrong that I can't fix. I don't want to get a different car but now I have to!.

29 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2014

Bought the car new, at about 85k miles I noticed it began to use more oil. The engine now uses about 2 to 3 quarts between oil changes (every 3k).

30 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/18/2013

On 12/18/2013 started car in the morning and and engine started knocking(4 cylinder). Checked oil and added 2 quarts. Then on Friday 12/20 drove 4 mile engine and valves started knocking and rattling. From other complaints it seems that the engine in blown. I bought the car new and have served it religiously. How can an engine with 75000 miles on it lose that much oil? I have had cars with over 125000 miles on them and they didn't lose that much! apparently there has been multiple complaints about this engine and so far Toyota has done nothing about.

31 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2013

When starting my car my 4 wheel drive light, engine light, vsc light wouldn't go out. When taken this to my mechanic I was told that the vacuum system. After checking everything , things seemed to be ok. When it happened again I was told that the gas cap was put on to tight. The lights where reset. In January it began to happen again. Took it to a new mechanic, I was to told that the charcoal filter needed to be replaced, which I needed to wait about 10 days for it to come in. Replaced the about 25 miles later lights came back on. New clamps where put on all hoses. 50 miles later lights back on , now code is saying the charcoal canister faulty. Now that needs to be replaced. My mechanic did research, found out that their has been many complaints about this problem. This part cost over 800$ I myself have read other Rav4 owners that this isn't a new problem. How long or how many complaints does it take for someone to do something about this. Their have been times when this has happens the car sputters and really doesn't go anywhere. Does my life have end when my vehicle does this and I get hit from behind. Oh don't even get me started on the amount of oil this car uses. Maybe my engine needs to blow up first. Please finally do something before someone gets hurt. Or is this what needs to happen.

32 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2013

I have a 2008 Toyota Rav4, 4 cylinder engine, which currently has a technical service bulletin out advising Toyota dealerships that the 4 cylinder engine for that particular year is defective. The piston rings do not properly remove the oil as the piston travels up and down, and as a result the engine consumes excessive oil. My vehicle uses approximately a quart and a half of oil in only 1,500 miles. Toyota said that they would fix it under the power train warranty if it's within 5 years or 60,000 miles, which mine is over the miles with 70,000+. So, I have a 5 year old vehicle and I have to pay for new pistons and rings, because Toyota doesn't want to designate this as a recall for their defective engine. Toyota prides itself on its reputation and reliability of their vehicles, but they acknowledge that they have a defective motor, but want us to pay for the repair or in some cases a portion of the repair, which is costly. . . . . . Around $5,000. 00.

33 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

In August, oil light flashes when I make a hard stop; took it to dealer and they put a monitor on it and told me to return at 1200 miles. I forgot and only remembered when I started to see the oil light blink on again when I came to a stop. I came back in to dealer in November, they read the monitor and told me I needed to have my engine rebuilt; the service tech. Met with a mgr, rechecked readings and since the mileage was 4000 on the monitor, they thought the readings were skewed. So, they reset the monitor, added oil to the car and I will ensure that I come back at 1200 miles to find out the status. I was told that the car is safe to drive (going on a long drive for the holidays). I am seeing many comments online similar to mine and they relate that there is a problem with the Rav4 engine. I called Toyota USA and reported the issue to them earlier this month. They told me to wait to hear what the dealer says. I now drive with 2 quarts of oil in my car and will monitor my oil levels throughout my trip to and from NY. I am very concerned about this and based on what I seen written online so far, I expect that the dealer is going to tell me that I will have to pay for engine repairs because right now they are saying they are not aware of this issue occurring with the vehicles they service.

34 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/24/2013

I was driving down a street when my car suddenly died. The engine would not turn over though the battery finally turned on. My car was towed to the local Toyota dealership. The service department took the engine apart and said a valve spring broke which caused the valve to drop down and make contact with the #4 piston, breaking it completely apart. (it ended up in the oil pan. ) my engine is ruined and must be replaced. They quoted a price of $7000 to replace the engine. The service department manager said there was nothing I could have done that would cause the spring to break like that or cause that kind of damage. My vehicle is 9,000 miles outside of warranty (though still within 6-year time frame of warranty). My car has 69,000 miles on it.

35 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2013

Tl- the contact owns a 2008 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that upon inspection, the vehicle was consuming a large amount of oil and the oil pressure warning light illuminated intermittently.
