I was recently driving my 2019 Rav4 when it started switching to mud and sand mode and turns of all my safety features. This would occur at random when I was parked and driving. I was able to find several discussion boards about this issue by searching ‘ 2019 Rav4 switching to mud and sand mode. ” I took it to the dealership and they discovered that there is a leak from the roof racks that is causing water to get in my car and is now impacting the driving ability and safety features on this car. I was able to find many discussion boards and even youtube videos on how to fix this issue by searching “2019 Rav4 roof rack leak. ” it was reported in australia, japan, taiwan, and the us. Many reported they had this issue fixed for free under warranty but now warranty has run out on the car and to fix the roof rack costs approximately $5000. Fixing the roof rack does not cover potential water damage that my airbags may have experienced as well and does not ensure there is not permanent water damage to the driving mode buttons.

Vehicle has absolutely no safe way to hook up to tow. My wife got the car stuck in the snow and needed a tug out with a tow strap. The owners manual states that only some vehicle of this model are equipped with a towing eye. Mine is not, and from what I hear all subsequent year Rav4 are not equipped. I crawled underneath the car front and back and dug snow out to find there is no place to hook to. No holes, frame members, nothing to put a hook on, a clevis around, or a loop of rope to loop to. All plastic and smooth sheet metal. I had to strap around one wheel and drag it fighting the allwheel drive system, against my owners manual instructions. How can this be that there is absolutely no recommended way to tow/recover this vehicle or secure it to a towtruck? I have heard stories of tow companies refusing to tow Rav4’s because of this.

This as well as many many other 2019, 2020, & 2021 Rav4s develop water leaks in the roof (due to inadequate gaskets in the rood rails) which result in water entering in vehicle very close to the side curtain airbags. Toyota updated the parts on the current model year but refuses to issue a recall. This is dangerous due to the strong possibility of water contacting the airbags and or the electrical connections.

The rear hatch trunk doorr does not operate correctly. The hinges holding the door on could fail leaving the door to fly off the vehicle. Apparently this is a known problem on this make and model of this vehicle and Toyota is unwilling to repair the problem.

45 Body problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2022

There is a known issue with 2019+ toyoya Rav4 where the roof rack rails seaks leak water into the driver and passenger srs a pillar, I don't understand why there isn't a TSB for this, im concerned that the water intrusion will damage the airbags or electrical components and cause the airbag to deploy or cause improper srs a pillar airbag operation. I'm also concerned about rust, a quick google search and youtube will show the issue occuring but Toyota is only fixing it under warranty, I don't think this should happen on a car under 3 years old with less than 50,000 miles. I do notice a foul odor in the car which led me to find this related TSB t-sb-0094-21 for a similar issue but none for roof rack seals. Toyota has updated the seals to thicker ones from the flimsy paper gasket to thicker plastic since 2019 so they know about the issue and have corrected it but only under warranty. I did see complaints on carcomplaints. Com also but I'm out of factory warranty.

46 Body problem

This Rav4 developed a leak in the roof by the front and back windows. Found many references to this on the internet. It is a known problem for this vehicle that is not being addressed by Toyota. This problem can cause mold and damage to the side air bags. This is clearly a safety issue.

Hi. A couple months ago I bought a certified 2019 Toyota Rav4 adventure. I'm happy with the purchase however there is an issue that I'm concerned about and is a leak that comes from the roof. I checked my Rav4 and I did notice some stains in the roof, by the roof pillars. I love my Rav4 and I've subscribed to different Rav4 chat forums and I noticed that many people especially the one's who own the 2019 Rav4 adventure have the same issue with the roof leaking, that originates from the roof racks. I noticed that there's not a recall on this issue and I would like to know if Toyota does offer a solution to this problem.

Lots of people including me are having issues with 2019 or newer Toyota Rav4 the roof guard rails seals start letting water in on both the driver side and passenger side near the airbag. This a youtube link that explained it well. Https://youtu. Be/dbkhflti2sc . I am worried my air bags will not function since they might be getting wet.

50 Body problem

Failure Date: 02/25/2022

Vehicle purchased two years ago developed a failure of the mechanism that opens and supports the rear hatch with no warning. This led to cracking of hinges and brackets, and mis-alignment of the hatch which prevented it from closing and latching. The original estimate for repairs would have made the owner liable for thousands of dollars. After reviewing evidence that this was not due to an accident or other abuse, Toyota agreed to a one-time 'goodwill' financial adjustment that reduced owner financial liability. But as reported in various Toyota owner forums, this is not an isolated incident: hatch opening mechanism failure has been experienced by owners of other Toyota products with various models and model years. A fundamental design flaw requires a remedy, not just repair to return it to its original, flawed, state.

The factory installed bike rack is not sealed properly and leaking water when rains, etc… into the srs airbag on passenger and driver side.

52 Body problem

Failure Date: 12/18/2021

The roof rack rails have begun leaking due to failed weather sealants around them. Water is seeping through when it rains, getting water on the airbags, headliner, and moves along the top frame. I’m scared the electrical components will become damaged. Issue began happening right around 45,000 miles when I noticed. I have only owned vehicle for 2. 5 years.

Failure Date: 12/02/2021

Around 2:30 pm on Thursday, December 2, 2021, my wife and I were on our way to the gym for a workout. I was pulling my auto out of my garage. It was in reverse when it stopped half way and did not finish backing out. I put it in drive and then in reverse and I was able to back out. Once out of my driveway, I backed out into the street in reverse. From reverse, I put my car in drive to start driving on the street. At this point, the car spun out of control and I could not control its movements. The car turned around on the street and drove into my yard. It ran through the yard, spun around through some hedges, onto my driveway and continued back into the yard. At this time it hit a tree in the yard, went back on the road, turned into my driveway before coming to a stop. We got out and inspected the damage. The entire front bumper and the assembly was hanging from the body of the car. The damage was extensive. Thankfully, no one was on the road and the only damage was to my car and my yard. Shrubs and tree. This car is a limited edition with cameras and braking functions that stop the car if an object comes in its way. The car kept accelerating and did not brake to avoid collision. Note: we bought this 2019 Rav4 in March 2019. It was brand new, full loaded with many safety features. In October of 2019, we heard sounds coming from the front of the car. We took it to Toyota dealership to have it diagnosed. They determined that the electromagnetic clutch assembly needed to be replaced. The car had 7100 miles on the odometer.

54 Body problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2021

All 4 of the doors on my 2019 Toyota Rav4 have been filling full of water whenever it rains ever since I bought it from the dealership. Then the rainwater leaks out into the interior ceiling fabric, as well as the sides of the vehicle, staining it b/c black mold is growing! also, it sounds like a cooler full of water sounds whenever the car is moving! weighs it down too of course. . . Also it frequently smells like something is burning inside the cabin, but can't figure out where it's coming from.

57 Body problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2021

My Rav4 has factory roof rails and the seals on the rails for drivers and passengers sides have begun leaking which caused water to get inside the liner of the roof and travel down the a pillars to the side curtain airbags. I had the vehicle inspected at Toyota of terre haute indiana. And they confirmed where the leak was at and stated that they have no reports of this issue happening. However there are a lot of people reporting the same issues online.

58 Body problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2021

Roof rails water sealing failure - causing water to enter the vehicle on each side of the front a pillars of the vehicle and is reaching the airbag electrical connections which can lead to airbag failure during an accident due to corroded electrical connections. Vehicle taken to Toyota of north charlotte to show dealership the damage to the headliner and request a resolution be completed. Dealership inspected vehicle - stated they believed it to be clogged sunroof drain lines and stated if it continues to notify them. Have reached back out to them as rain storm same night as service 8/15/2021 revealed that leak continues. No warning lights have appeared but symptoms are shown by the amount of water dripping into the cabin from these defective roof rails and running down the a pillars into the dashboard.

Significant roof leak driver side front. Took it to a dealer. Wants customers to pay for Toyota’s design flaw.

60 Body problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2021

My roof rack rail assembly is leaking water down my a and c pillars, and into the inside of my vehicle. When it leaks into my car it also leaks down into my side curtain airbags to the point if I were to get into an accident where the side curtain airbags needed to deploy because of my windshield, they would not which could cause me to lose my life. I have asked my dealership about it and they told me they had numerous roof racks replaced because of the leaking but because my vehicle is no longer under warranty, I have to pay to have the roof racks replaced. I have tried to reseal my roof racks but did not work. The Toyota dealership told me that if resealing didn't work, the only other option was to replace. I cannot drive in the rain, even when it is just sprinkling or wash my car because any sort of water will leak into my vehicle. Toyota will not send a recall out for this issue but is known to be a safety issue with the Toyota dealership and numerous people that own a 2019-2021 Toyota Rav4.

61 Body problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2021

The sunroof exploded outward/upward. I was doing 75-80mph north bound on I-15 in montana, south of mile marker 250. Suddenly there was a loud boom like a an explosion! (I was startled and almost lost control of the car. ) when I reached cascade, the nearest town, I checked and saw that the sunroof was bulged outward, with a large hole. See pictures. Condition: around 12:45pm. Outside - cloudy, temp around 30 degree farenheit with a dusting of snow. Inside cabin was set to 70 degrees. I do not know the elevation above sea level. I was not near any area that rocks could fall on the roof. The only other vehicle was about 1/4 to 1/2 mile behind me at the time of the incidence. The autobody shop guy checked for any signs of rocks or bullets or anything that could have caused it and he could not even guess at the cause, especially since the glass was bulging outward.

62 Body problem

Failure Date: 05/18/2021

The 2019 Rav4 models have an issue with the roof rack rails leaking water into the a pillar as well as the c pillar due to a failure in the materials the manufacturer used. Not only does this cause issues with the headliner of the vehicles but this could also endanger the occupants of the entire vehicle due to the leak affecting the airbags located in the a and c pillars. This leak has a potential to affect electrica as well as the main safety component located in the locations stated above. Not addressing the issue could result in death due to airbag failures and could then lead to class action lawsuits.

63 Body problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2021

The contact owns a 2019toyota Rav4. The contact stated when it rains the vehicle allows water to enter the cabin. The contacts concern is that it might cause an electrical problem. 64 Body problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2021

After periods of rain, snowmelting on the car, or going through a car wash, water enters via the roof rack area, potentially exposing the airbags to water. The water caused staining on the headliner all over (a. B, c pillars). The curtain airbags for the front and back seat were in direct contact with the area saturated by water. I tookthe vehicle into the dealership where I purchased it, and they replaced the headliner and roof rack hardware after confirming there was a leak (3/4/21). After the repair was done, a few weeks passed where there was little to no rain to verify the leakwas actually fixed. Yesterday, (3/26/21) it rained. I went to inspect the headliner, and the passenger curtain airbag on the a pillarwas surrounded by wetness. This poses a risk to the integrity of the airbags. Please note, no modifications were made to the car- the roof racks are the oem Toyota low profile (factory installed). This occurs (from what I can tell) when the car is stationary. In this case, my driveway.

65 Body problem

Roof rails leaking water into car. Headliners near the a pillar are wet and water leaking down the a pillar and onto carpet in interior. A pillar has airbags that may now be exposed to water. Anytime it rains in GA water gets in the car.

Roof rack is leaking on both sides of my Rav4. I can't get any assistance with getting it fixed. It's a 2019 with 58,000 on it. I have seen several post with the same issue.

67 Body problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2020

I am unable to lock the driver side front door. Internal controls, remote controls, and the manual key fail. It will open and close (latch), but can be opened from the inside or outside, whether parked or running. I have not tried to open it from the outside when in motion. When attempting to lock, the mechanical indicator by the door handle moves from unlocked to locked to unlocked to locked rapidly and with a harsh rattle noise.

69 Body problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2020

On March 14, 2020, and at 12:30 pm, I crashed into the front of a parked small Subaru SUV on my private community street, which was at low-speed (10 mph) but the front of my car was badly damaged and cost me about $17,000 to fix it! while nothing happened to the other vehicle except some minor scratches on its front bumper! also, my left leg was injured because of the harmful knee airbag, and god knows what would have happened to me if the accident was at a higher speed, or on the freeway? or what will happen to me if another accident happens in the future at a higher speed, or on the freeway? so, I sent a complaint letter to Toyota and asked them to return the car and cancel my contract with Toyota financial services. But they denied my complaint and said that they do not believe the concern is the result of a defect in materials or workmanship! while I had told them that my complaint and concern is about safety issues and that vehicle is not safe at all, because the body of the vehicle is very weak and cannot save my life if another accident is likely to occur in the future at a higher speed, or on the freeway. And after that accident, I cannot trust my car anymore, but they just ignored me! I still cannot believe that a minor accident can cause that much damage to my car, while the car I crashed into was not damaged at all! the pictures of the cars and my injured leg are available upon request.

70 Body problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2020

Water stains on the interior headliner where the plastic a-pillar cover meets the roof. This appears on both side of the car. The water leaks all the way down to the floor not the driver and passenger side. There is a lot of electronic wires / connectors / side airbags and driver dash panel and they all get wet and appear they get corroded thus impairing function of the car and create danger or unexpected behavior of the car. The issue appears to be a pin that mounts the roof rails to the body of the car. Water will leak inside the car after rain or car wash. The issue appears when car is stationary and while in motion but during movement water leaks faster.
