1. Transmission sudden jerking/shifting when slowing down in city at traffic lights then trying to accelerate anywhere from 5-10 mph will then jerk backwards then forwards making the car jump about 10 inches forward. Can be replicated at any time. 2. Cars front end suspension seems to squeak/groan will pulling into my bank or drive way, almost any unleveled pavement. This happens at lower speeds when I can hear it with very little wind noise. 3. My seat in the vehicle broke at 7,000 miles. 4. My brakes sound as if the rotors are bent with slight vibration in the brake pedal. 5. No fix for transmission. Today they are reflashing the pcm - powertrain control module. We'll see if that will fix the issue but I highly doubt it from the damage that has already occurred. I am working with Toyota corporate with the issue.

I was driving on city streets when the car violently jerked and speeded up. I was in fear of being in an accident and feared for my safety. I immediately took action to repair this car that was in mint condition to this point. The 2003 rav 4 module and transmission failed at 83559 miles, which is low mileage for a Toyota. Toyota motor corp lost a class action law suit, and agreed to be responsible for replacement of transmission and module replacement of the 2001 to 2003 model year rav's 4 that failed within 150,000 mile usage or 10 year use. My car had only 83,559 miles at the time of failure due to the faulty original module that caused this transmission problem. In November 2006 Toyota issued a technical bulletin # 1046 with reference to 2001-2003 Toyota Rav4 transmission: u14of, u241e. Subject:2-3 blind up/harsh 2-3 po755, burnt (c2, clutch, harsh rev. Engagement, wrong gear starts. . . . Saying that the faulty pcm in the toyoa Rav4's can cause the transmission problem that my car experienced. . . . . . . . . . (I have a copy of the document for reference, if necessary) the problem with the transmission in my Rav4 with only 83559 miles was a durability issue; Toyota sold the car with a faulty module, did not replace it when they admitted to the problem and the company needs to be responsible for any and all costs incurred.

October 11, 2012. On or about October 8 2012 I began having hesitation and jumping into gear as I am driving my 2001 Rav4. This happens mainly when accelerating from a stop sign/light. I am aware there has been a recall on many 2001 Rav4 vehicles. I bought my Rav4 from carmax in north attleboro mass on April 19 2012. So, I have not even had my vehicle for 5 months yet. On Thursday October 11 2012 I took my Rav4 back to carmax in attleboro with my complaint--I will be leaving the vehicle with them on Friday October 12 2012 so they can diagnose the transmission and the tcm (the transmission module which has had the recall). If it is found that my Rav4 is one of many under this recall, I will hope that Toyota will honor its' commitment and fix my rav. I do hope that lodging this complaint with you will help me in this plight, as I do not have the money to fix this problem and nor should I have to as to the above, and due to the fact that is was a recall with Toyota. Thank you.
Toyota Rav4 car jerks upon accelerating from stop. Car is sluggish to accelerate. Could case wreck when turning left across a street or hit from behind if Rav4 does not accelerate correctly. Failure started to occur suddenly without prior problems. Dealership states ecm needs to be replaced based on TSB from Toyota (TSB # 000206), TSB states "improvements have been made to the engine control module (ecm) (sae term: powertrain control module/pcm) manufacturing process to reduce the possibility of this condition occurring" -- this indicates that it is a known issue, that is occurring due to a poor manufacturing process. There are several websites where other 2001-2003 Rav4 owners are complaining about the same issue.
Hesitation accelerating from stop. Lack of power going up a steep incline. Improper shifting from one gear to another. Vehicle became undrivable 03/01/2010. Pcm/ecm module defective- needs replacement at a cost of 1693. 41.

2003 Toyota rav 4 transmission failure due to faulty pcm- technical bulletin #1046. Transmission experienced bind up and harsh shifting January 2010. Vehicle transmission started binding up, car would not run properly. Towed to transmission shop. Entire transmission and faulty pcm had to be replaced at cost of $4600. 00. Toyota is aware of issue, released a TSB regarding repair issues. TSB is limited to 8 years or 80,000 miles. Toyota and dealer have refused to help in any way.
I have a 2002 Toyota Rav4 with transmission/ecm problems. My issue is that there was a technical service bulletin sent out to all of Toyota service departments it is as follows: technical service bulletin tc002-06, revised March 3, 2006: "some 2001 ? 2003 model year Rav4 vehicles equipped with an automatic transaxle may exhibit a harsh shift condition and/or m. I. L. ?on? with dtc p0750, p0753, p0755, p0758, and/or p1760 stored. Improvements have been made to the engine control module (ecm) (sae term: powertrain control module/pcm) manufacturing process to reduce the possibility of this condition occurring. Use the following procedure to repair the vehicle" it goes on to say replace the ecm/ecu and possibly the transmission. My complaint is that Toyota did not notify any consumer about this issue and now that many of us are just now having a problem with this and after researching it learning that we are not alone and it is happening with many of the same model car- mainly the 2002. I have contacted Toyota corp. As well as the dealership where my car was purchased. I was told the cost to repair my car would be a costly $9,000. 00. This is something that Toyota intentionally kept from consumers to avoid costly repairs to themselves. Had I been notified I would have had the ecu/ecm replace in 2006 while my car was still under warranty. There are 121 complaints to the national highway traffic safety administration. This just started with my car 3 weeks ago I was almost hit by another car because my car would not switch into gear once I reached about 20 mph and again at about 40 mph. . . The engine revved to about 6000 rpm's and just sat there if it were in neutral. I am very worried about the safety of driving this car. Toyota needs to own up to this problem and issue a recall. I am very upset and feel I was not dealt a fair hand with this car - Toyota would only repair this problem based on a customers specific complaint under 80k miles.
2001 Toyota Rav4 has a defective transmission control module which causes the car to slow down rapidly in traffic causing serious health risks to all persons nearby. Toyota issued a bulletin to all service instructing them to replace the tcm to prevent this problem from taking place. Toyota does not warn their customers about this problem and simply waits for the problem to happen and by then the tcm causes damage to the transmission and the vehicle is out of warranty. There are hundreds of consumers experiencing this problems and Toyota will not repair the vehicles under warranty. I cannot believe that a company like Toyota would operate this way after building a reputation of being a quality auto maker. I have been quoted a discounted rate of $ 3500. 00 to repair my car by the dealership. This is robbery.
2003 Toyota Rav4. Consumer requests ramification to unsuccessful attempts to fix the manufacturer's defect in workmanship the consumer stated the check engine light illuminated. Prior to the engine light illuminating, the consumer noticed the vehicle would stall as she applied the accelerator pedal after a red light and it would surge with force once it accelerated. The consumer was charged $664. 87 for a sensor and v-ripped belt. On March 24, 2010, the check engine light illuminated again. Upon researching on the internet, the consumer discovered a TSB for the pcm and ecm. The consumer also complained of a squeaking noise coming from the front of the vehicle at the slightest road bump and hearing a thump when turning the wheels to the far right. The consumer stated the dealer never mentioned the TSB's regarding the ecm/pcm.
The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Rav4. While driving 30 mph, the vehicle would not shift into gear. After a couple of seconds, the vehicle returned to the correct gear, followed by a loud banging sound. The vehicle also jerked during this time. There were no failures or warning indicators prior to the failures. The vehicle was taken to a local repair shop and the mechanic stated that the transmission was failing. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer confirmed that the transmission and tcm failed, and stated that the repair would cost $6,500. The manufacturer would not provide compensation because the vehicle was out of warranty. The contact was later informed that if she had the vehicle repaired at the cost of $6,500, the manufacturer would reimburse her in the amount of $2,500. The contact discovered a technical service bulletin for the failure with the transmission, which stated that a warranty was offered that would cover the emission failure of the transmission for up to 80,000 miles. The manufacturer stated that they will investigate and call the contact back. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure mileage was 67,548 and current mileage was 68,270.
The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that the vehicle would not shift into first or second gear, and the vehicle would jerk. The vehicle shifts from first to third gear without incident. In addition, the vehicle loses power and jerks when driving in reverse. The check engine light illuminated on the instrument panel and the solenoid was diagnosed as the cause of the failure. The failures are identical to the ones mentioned in the service bulletin for the transmission control module. The dealer stated that the vehicle could not be repaired because it was not under warranty. The failure and current mileages were 85,000.
Rav4 do not shift gear. Some times it was like jerked shifting and I searched about this problem in internet and found several problem reported in carcomplaints. Com site. This is what happened to me. "I took car to a dealer - lombard Toyota, IL, and told about gear shifting problem. At first they did not say anything about the known problem with Rav4. When I said, I researched about this problem in internet and found that Rav4 has a gear shifting problem and Toyota knows about it, and there is a tsr-tech service bulletin, and it needs to repair free. They told me let us take a look at. After half an hour, they told me I am lucky it is still under warranty 8yr/80000. I purchased this one on 2/??/2001. So I am luckily covered. I did a little argued that even if I am out of warranty, Toyota should take care of this problem because it is a defect. They did not care much. And I did not press on it. So here is the problem-according to Toyota service bulletin tc002-06 revised model 2001-2003 Rav4 equipped with automatic transaxle may exhibit a harsh shift and/or m. I. L "on" dtc p0750, p0753, p0755, p0758, and/or p1760. Improvements have been made to the engine control module (ecm) sae term - powertrain control module/pcm) manufacturing process to reduce the possibility of this condition occurring. Use the following procedure to repair the vehicle. They replace a r&r engine control module. My Rav4 drives good now. I still think my Rav4 is really not smooth. Or atleast that is the way I feel. This is it for right now. If anything comes up I will update later.
Vehicle would hesitate from a stop creating a potential hazard. Independent garage told us that it was a transmission issue. Transmission was covered under our extended warranty so we took vehicle to Toyota dealer. They advised us that issue was ecm (electronic control module) issue and not covered by the extended warranty. When I asked if Toyota would cover I was advised that they would not as this issue was not subject to any recall? they did however have a technical bulletin that addressed the transmission hesitation to the faulty ecm? I replaced the ecm ($1612) and it appears that it corrected the problem. My research has shown that this problem is very common to the 2002 Rav4 model only in the Toyota family of suvs. Is this a design defect?.
I have not had an accident or injuries to what my complaint is about. I personally think this is a safety issue. I drive a 2001 Toyota Rav4 and recently started having shifting issues. I started to research this issue and came across this website called carcomplaints. Com and found many others with the same issue. Toyota is aware of the problems because they came out with a TSB in 2006. When you come to a complete stop and then go to drive the car forward the vehicle doesn't shift properly therefore could be a safety issue with not being able to move out of the way of on coming traffic. Please visit this website and see the amount of people having the same issues and I like many others feel there is a defective ecm in these vehicles sending faulty signals to the transmission causing the vehicle to not shift properly and could potentially cause accidents. The other problem is that this is not happening all the time, its sporadic and even the dealer is having difficulty duplicating the problem. I hope more people make complaints and I would be interested in seeing how many have. Thanks!.
Faulty engine control module. It has failed and caused transmission to fail as well. After $4k replacement transmission is shot again. Transmission misses gears and has stalled in the middle of intersection. Nothing was done to correct. Dealership is stating to replace transmission first then come back to fix computer. . Hard shift prob from 2/3rd gear with Toyota 2002 Rav4 took car to dealer on 9-17-2007. Recall for emission problem caused the engine light to come on. I described problem to the dealer and asked them to look at this problem. Dealer said any other problems should show on computer. Picked car up asked about shift prob. They said nothing came up on the computer diagnostic ( I later learned that they test drove the car and could not duplicate problem) and it sounded like it could be a transmission problem. They said to make an appointment to have the transmission looked at. I asked for cost and they said they had no idea it would depend on how long it took to find problem. I took car to transmission shop. They hooked car up to computer and said internal transmission failure and need transmission rebuilt. I had this repar done at cost of 2,639. 81. Called me after transmission was rebuilt there is a problem. They researched database and found that there was a bulletin put out by Toyota on March 3, 2006. Powertrain control module that causes a shift problem in 2001-2003 Toyota Rav4's. It explains the diagnostic and repair for this problem in detail and states that the ecm may need to be replaced. I am informed that in order for my transmission to work need to have ecm replaced. Toyota knew about this problem when I took my car to them they could have fixed the problem then and saved me $2,639. 81. I paid dealer to have the ecm replaced for $1003. 81. Part to me for a wholesale price. The car is now finally running fine. I was told that they do not search for bulletins on cars that are in for service. They said there are just too many of them for them to keep up with. I saw time it took for the tech to look up the bulletin on laptop info came up immediately. My research shows that other 2002 Rav4's have same problem. I have failed ecm that was removed from car.
Automatic transmission damaged because the ecm Toyota installed in 2002 rav 4 had programming logic issues.
I own a 2007 Toyota Rav4 limited 4wd v6 and the transmission does not shift correctly at low speeds. A typical example of the problem is seen after slowing down to make a turn onto another street. The transmission does not shift out of overdrive, so when attempting to accelerate, the engine speed increases and the vehicle does not move. The computer then realizes that the car is trying to accelerate and "slams" into gear. This condition also occurs in traffic and making lane changes is very dangerous at low speeds. I have complained to Toyota's technical service hotline and had the lead service technician at my local dealer ride with me to see the problem I have been experiencing. I have been told that the car is "within normal operating parameters", but after looking at several web sites, I have seen that this a worldwide issue with every camry, sienna, avalon, Rav4 and tundra built in the past several model years. The local service tech told me that in his 28 years of repairing Toyota vehicles, he has never seen problems like this and the cars are being designed in such a way that a mechanic cannot fix the car. I complained about this problem within the first 5000 miles of ownership, and after 18 months, there still isn't a fix or admission from Toyota that there is a problem that needs to be addressed with the Rav4, although they have released tcm updates for some camry and avalon vehicles to correct this very issue.

Two separate problems: 1) left rear suspension, reported to two dealers starting 8/11/07 followed by three other complaints, diagnosed as worn bushing. Parts on order; problem getting worse. Notified dealer through factory rep; dealer has not indicated that driving vehicle is a safety issue. 2) hesitation downshifting when depressing gas pedal. First reported to two dealers on 9/8/07 followed by two other complaints. Informed it was/is a software problem corrected at the factory, yet problem persists.

I have a brand new 2007 Rav4 base 4cyl (6000 miles on it) with the cruse on, going 60 - 65 mph, up hill it will start shifting in and out of gears, bucking and jumping.
I am experiencing a consistent problem with my 2007 Toyota Rav4 with a lag in acceleration. The time I noticed it the most is when slowing down to about 10 mph to make a turn, as I come out of the turn and press the accelerator, the car does nothing for a couple of seconds. Then the engine revs up and finally lurches forward. After taking it in to the dealership twice and being told that this is how "drive-by-wire" acceleration is designed even though I've told them that I see it as a safety issue, I am not optimistic that this problem will be resolved. I started noticing this problem just a couple of days after purchasing my vehicle.
On oct. 5, 2002, I bought a brand new 2003 Toyota Rav4 from star Toyota of bayside inc. As of this writing, the automobiles mileage is only 15, 782 miles. On July 13, 2009 (8 â½ months ago), I had taken my 2003 Toyota Rav4 for service in regards to the lighting on the instrument panel check engine. Additionally, I stated that prior to the engine light turning on, I had noticed that the car would stall as I hit the gas pedal after a red light, and that it would surge with force once it accelerated; it felt like a rear-ended collision. The vehicle only had 12,894 miles when the SUV was taken in for a diagnostic test. I was charged $664. 87 for a sensor and a v-ripped belt. Last week, on Mar. 24, 2010 at 15,757 miles, the service engine light came back on. This problem recurred for the 2nd time in just 8 â½ months of prior work rendered, and after only 2,863 miles. While researching the internet in regards to check engine light on 2003 Toyota Rav4, I stumbled upon hundreds of consumers complaints for the exact problems. I have been having trouble with harsh symptoms before the engine light and, unsafe and harsh driving conditions. As I continued my research efforts, I immediately linked into a few Toyota tsbs concerning a defected ecm/pcm replacement procedure to the failing components as transmission control module & power train control module w/the diagnostic trouble codes. I have serviced the vehicle throughout the years, and never informed of any of the numerous Toyota tsbs. It's dishonest, and lacks integrity not to formally inform the loyal consumers of the defection and the safety issues & transmission failure. In written format, I am justifiably and legitimately requesting proper and honest ramification to this unsuccessful attempts to fix the manufacturer's defection in workmanship of my 2003 Rav4. The purchase of a new auto was to assure myself peace of mind of safety & quality. A letter will be mail out tomorrow to Toyota customer service.
