The trunk latch broke off! a little bit of research on the web and low and behold, this problem is everywhere! it is such a cheaply made part and so clearly breaks all the time. Toyota absolutely should recall and fix this problem at no charge to owners!.

3 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2007 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 02/27/2011

I purchased a used 2007 Scion Tc on labor day 2010. I noticed that the trunk latch cover was a little flimsy for such an important, commonly used part of the car. During the colder months, opening the trunk was a delicate procedure because often I felt the cover would break from just trying to open the trunk. On 2/27/11 my 13yr old son opened the trunk after I had just shut it to put in his luggage and the cover ripped on the left side running diagonally all the way to the top, leaving only the thin molding strip to secure it in place. I was about to rip the whole thing off so it wouldn't fall off while driving, when I noticed that the latch mechanism was attached to it. I also noticed that the clips that keep it attached on the right side had broken, so I couldn't just push it back into place. Like many others on this forum, I used clear packing tape to secure it in place, taking care not to get it on any other part of the car where it would damage the paint. It seems unbelievable to me that for a part that is seemingly so fragile and easy to break that 1. There are barely any used parts to replace it 2. Very few sites that even sell it and 3. That this kind of thing wouldn't be covered under warranty, considering the many number of forums I've seen with owners complaining about the same thing. I think I will look into some type of epoxy and pray that it will pass inspection in August. Glad to know that I'm not the only one who apparently doesn't know how to open a trunk.

4 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2008 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 12/10/2010

2008 Scion Tc hatchback handle/cover has broken twice. This occurred with only normal use and in researching seems to be a design flaw in the series. The part is held on with plastic and slim metal parts that break during the course or normal use. In order to open the hatch you must push the handle underneath the cover and pull up. The design seems to be such that the parts are not sturdy enough to handle this normal use.

5 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2007 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 12/01/2010

I just purchased my 2007 Scion Tc five days ago. And last night (day 4) as I went to manually lift up the trunk from the handle area the whole area popped off car! I was not using excessive force of any kind. I know the vehicle was not like this prior because I had just been to the grocery store the previous night. Luckily I was just leaving my parents house when this happened so I was able to quick fix it with some clear packaging tape. But now it looks very tacky and cheap. Since I live in las vegas, nv. I don't think that this will be an adequate long term solution because of the extreme temperature changes & rains.

6 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2007 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 11/18/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Scion Tc. While the vehicle was parked the contact pulled on the trunk handle to open it and the handle detached. The wires that connected the handle to the vehicle were not in place to ensure that the handle would remain attached to the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 61,000.

7 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2007 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 08/23/2010

I own a 2007 Scion Tc. When I went to open my trunk the handle and the part around it completely came off. Is this covered by insurance because it is definitely a defect that I did not cause.

8 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2008 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 07/01/2010

I own a 2008 Scion Tc which that is driven by my son and have 2 complaints which I feel are safety defects. Upon taking it in for repairs on 6/16/10 we advised the service advisor at Toyota of hollywood (FL) that the front grill fell off after hitting a bump in the road. The service advisor told us that we should repair this ourselves since he didn't want Toyota to be liable if it fell off again. Shouldn't they be liable in the first place since they are the manufacturer of the vehicle? secondly, while my son was driving on I-95 last week (7/1/10), the hatchback popped open while driving at a speed of approximately 55 mph. When he arrived home, we noticed that the latch to the hatchback was very loose and held together by 2 worn out screws. I contacted the service manager at Toyota of hollywood for a resolution to this matter and have not yet received a return phone call.

9 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 12/30/2009

I have a Toyota Scion Tc hatchback 2006. Last year when opening the hatchback which must be manually opened the latch to open the hatchback fell off I was using no excessive force I opened it like normally the panel is still attached to the wire that goes on the inside I have taped it back on but it constantly falls off when it rains dangling while I am driving until I can re-tape it. I have gone to two different Toyota dealerships in two different states (texas and louisiana) and both have commented that they see it all the time. If it is such a common occurrence Toyota should order a recall considering it has happened to such a large number of owners of the Scion Tc.

10 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 11/20/2009

During cold weather, the latch on the trunk of a 2005 Scion Tc won't stay closed, keeping the hatch opened until it warms up, then it will close, but if it's cold outside it will stay opened.

11 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 09/16/2009

I have a 2005 Scion Tc that I purchase brand new from the factory. Recently I had my handle latch broken from normal use. I lifted it like you would normally do and it just snapped (broke). I then realized that it was framed or made with thin plastic that wouldn't last long on the car itself because if you apply normal pressure by opening it, the handle is not made to handle such pressure by the weight of the truck and glass. It's a hatch back. I notice numerous complaints from other Scion Tc owners on several blogs and websites. I have not attempted to fix it because I'm looking at parts alone $180 without labor. I was wondering if there's anything I could do besides filing a complaint. Thank you.

13 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2009 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 07/07/2009

The event leading to the failure was me reaching to open the rear hatch of the car. When I placed my hand on the car hatch handle, the hatch panel broke off and hangs over the license plate and swings violently when I'm driving. Toyota claims that the part isn't covered by warranty.

14 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 06/20/2009

Purchased 2005 Scion Tc new on 12/29/2004 have had several problems with interior trim and paint. Then last June (2009) when opening the trunk (hatch back) the latch plate came off the car in my hand hanging by a cord. This plate is made of very thin plastic and attached to the car with thin plastic clips. The clips are not strong enough to with stand the constant use and amount of upward pressure it takes to raise the hatch. In December 2009 the lever on the drivers seat back to move the seat forward to allow passengers in the back stuck and wouldn't move. Couple days later the lever would move but didn't work. The seat back can only be moved now using the lever at the side of the seat bottom. The car had less than 50,000 miles on it when the trunk/hatch piece broke off and under 60,000 miles when the seat lever stopped working. All the interior trim pieces that line the hatch window have broken off and they are also only held in place with these very flimsy plastic clips. The drivers side front pillar airbag cover has been falling off since the 3-4 month I owned the car the dealer has "tried" to repair and still when you shut the door or just driving the cover falls off.

15 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 06/17/2009

Rear hatch handle anchors broke around 10/8/08 and was told entire unit would need to be replaced at around $400. On 6/17/09 the entire unit broke away and has to be taped down so is doesn't hang in front of the license plate. After reading numerous forums online, I realize that this problem seems to be a problem with this car.

Hatch handle broke as it has on many Scion Tc's.

18 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2009 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 08/13/2008

Tl contact owns a 2009 Toyota scion coupe. The vehicle was stationary. The contact was unable to release the trunk with the ignition key. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer several times. 19 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Toyota Scion Tc

Failure Date: 07/10/2008

My 2006 Toyota Scion Tc has this very flumsy hatch back trunk handle(plastic) that broke. I have seen many same problem on the same model tc on the road. So this is definetly a design problem and Toyota should fix this. Looking at how this system was put together, I can tell why this piece is not lasting.
