I was driving down the highway in my 2007 Scion Tc and the car popped out of gear and began to rev-up. I then tried to put it back into gear and it was very loose and would not go. My mechanic told me the top of the shifter base broke off and must be a defect. This is very dangerous and must be investigated.

Hello, during your investigation of Toyota, has there been any mention of defective clutch mechanisms in the Scion Tc? the clutch on my 2009 Scion Tc burned out within one year of ownership at 7,500 miles and Toyota refused to cover the clutch on the warranty. I was forced to pay over $1,300 to repair the automobile. After opening a case with scion customer care and being very frustrated, I finally asked for the matter to go to arbitration. After review by the national center for dispute settlement (ncds), I was awarded a refund of the full repair cost. During this episode, I did online research and found many others who had the same problem: namely a clutch burning out at low mileage (in one case at 2,500 miles!) and Toyota/scion refusing to cover repairs as part of the warranty. It seems that Toyota tried to blame a manufacturing defect in their parts on customer's driving habits, which I, and others who had the same problem, highly dispute. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

The clutch assembly wore down prematurely and began to slip in every gear but first. The symptoms were sudden and immediately noticeable. I brought the vehicle to be inspected by the dealership from which it had been purchased. I was told the entire assembly needed to be replaced, but it was not covered under warranty because clutches are subject to "normal" wear and tear. I commute 70 miles every day under highway driving conditions and do very little stop-and-go driving. I also do not engage in driving habits conducive to excessive "wear and tear" on a clutch which would cause premature failure. As such, I consider it more likely that the parts were faulty.
