Traveling north on I-75 in independence twp, mi south of ortonville rd at 10:55am in a snow storm, driver used the passing lane to overtake a slow moving vehicle in the center lane. Accelerating to 70mph, driver began to merge back into center lane but encountered a heavy buildup of slush between lanes and began to loose traction. Vehicle started to veer to the right. Driver removed foot from the accelerator and turned wheel slightly to the left to correct the skid but the electronic stability control engaged and the vehicle immediately entered into a rapid 360 degree spin to the right. No other vehicle was struck. Driver recovered from the spin momentarily and car was facing northbound between the center and right lanes but still veering to the right. The front wheels contacted dry pavement while the rear wheels were on wet pavement causing the vehicle to make a sharp right turn head on into the guard rail at 60 mph. The guard rail gave way and the front end of the vehicle sustained heavy damage. However the vehicle rebounded and remained in the road way, sliding sideways and eventually spinning another 270 degrees after again striking the guard rail. The initial high speed impact with guard rail appears to have ignited the sodium azide as evidenced by a gunpowder like oder in the vehicle however no airbags deployed. Additionally, the seatbelt while properly fastened did not retract and restrain the driver. The seatbelt extended all the way out and remained in this position. This made it difficult to control the vehicle and caused the driver to impact the steering wheel when the guardrail was struck. This resulted in injury to the right side of the rib cage, with possible hairline fractures to the ribs, torn muscles, and bruising of the liver. Driver's head also impacted the ceiling. Upon second guardrail impact, driver's left arm impacted the steering wheel.

I own a 2008 xb and air bags never deployed when hit in passenger front side of car by a deer and back shoulder restraint didn't lock on impact allowed person to hit back of driver seat . After crash motor stayed running but hazard lights wouldn't work and just glad no one was killed. I just want someone to be aware that this could have been a bad outcome and to check out the safety of a vehicle to save lives. I did enjoy my xb lots room and great handling in snow.

Vehicle driven by daughter. 45 mph road. Two (2) vehicles in front of her. 1st vehicle made an abrupt right turn, causing vehicle #2 to abruptly decrease (braking) speed, which cause vehicle #3 (scion) driver to react quickly and brake. During braking, all four (4) wheels locked and vehicle skidded straight forward. Angle of skid shows both wheels sides were straight with an approximate two (2) to three (3) degree angle offset to the right; may be due from curvature of the road. Both skid marks were completely solid and both tracks were in a straight line. Upon front end impact with vehicle #2 in front of the scion, the following issues are of concern: 1. Front driver and front passenger airbags did not deploy. Not know if impact (deceleration) was high enough to activate. However, visual inspection of vertical sensor support beams (both left and right) are significantly displaced and bent. 2. Seat belt restraint system (front - driver and passenger): the seat belt restraint system appeared not to function as designed. According to the driver and passenger, both were wearing their seat belts. Upon impact, the driver's lower body propelled forward and her knees impacted the lower dash assembly. Additionally, her upper body was propelled forward, the seat belt did not lock, and then braced herself with hands and arms to prevent her head from striking the steering wheel. Additionally, the right front passenger experience the same propelling of lower and upper body with out the seat belt locking. He also had to brace himself from striking the dash. Called scion corporation headquarters on 14 September and opened a new case; stating exactly was stated above. Thank you for what your agency does and any assistance you can provide. The drivers side seatbelt where it attaches to the base between the seats is loose. The tailgate hatch assembly broke off. This is the only way to open the trunk and it is a cheap piece of plastic attached to the hatchback with 2 screws. As I was trying to open the trunk, the whole assembly came off in my hand. I have seen this in several other scions around town.
This vehicle had a lot of issues, first the front passenger seat belt fail 12/26/09 Toyota fixed/replaced now 4/3/12 discovered oil is burning to the point the oil light came on. Checked oil no oil show on oil dipstick then went to autozone bought the oil and topped it off 4/3/12. Before this both rear wheel bearings fail worn out. Replaced both sides cost almost $900 just parts alone. I've never own a new car before that has so much issues like this one. This vehicle is poorly made and Toyota should do something about this. Is this mean I will have to topped off my vehicle every other week or change my rear bearing and hubs every 50-70 miles or sooner? this is ridiculous and this is not Toyota it used to known for. I own Honda/Acura and Nissan never have this problem before. Not even once and have the vehicle more than 5-7 years already. Now my rear door/trunk don't want to open like there is time delay or some type. Why aren't Toyota warn people of the know issues or fixed it before they sell it?.

The contact sustained injury to the chest area and neck. A police report was filed. The air bags failed to deploy with the level of impact involved. The front driver side seat belt did not secure the driver during the crash. The vehicle was towed to a collision center to be repaired. I have a 2005 Scion Xb. I have 2 children that sit in the back seat in booster seats. The lap belts are really loose on this vehicle(my children can actually stand up on the floor and move to the middle seat with the seat belt buckled in, don't know if this is normal). Yesterday my daughter was pulling on her belt while I was driving and looped it around her neck. Since the belt is so loose it didn't bother her. When she unbuckled the belt the belt went up into the wall and tightened around her neck. At that point it wasn't choking her and I ran around there (passenger rear) and tried to help. Her head would not fit through the loop to get her out. I could not get the seat belt to come out any because it was locked up. The more we struggled the tighter the seat belt kept getting around her neck. It started to choke her and I grabbed a pair of scissors that I keep in the glove department and cut the belt. I only recently started keeping scissors in the car and if I did not have them my daughter would probably be dead right now. I would have had to watch her get strangled to death and nothing I could do. I don't understand why there is not some kind of emergency release to unlock a seat belt in an emergency. She should not have been playing with the seat belt, but kids do stupid things, and there should be an emergency way to release that seat belt. I know have to pay almost $300 to fix the seat belt, but I guess that is a small price to pay for what could have been the alternative.

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Scion Xb. A few months ago, the seat belt on the driver's side began to shred and the threads separated one by one. The dealer stated that there was a five year/60,000 mile warranty on the seat belt; however, there were no recalls for the seat belt. The failure would cost $200 plus $150 per hour in labor. The contact is waiting to see if the failure worsens before having the vehicle repaired. The failure mileage was 60,000 and current mileage was 72,005. Updated 09/11/09 updated 09/15/09.
*****attention***** *****scion xb seat belts very dangerous for little kids********* rear driver side seat belts locking to the point of extreme pain and suffocation. The belt mechanism once locked it continues to rachet backward to its locking state so that if one leans back on the seat you become glued to it. The seat belt will not give in forward which makes difficult to reach the unlatch button. This is extremely dangerous for young children!. My son (7 yrs old) fell asleep while on the freeway only to wake up with his seat belt locked, I suggested to lean backward on the seat to give it some slack and then to pull forward, to my surprised the seat belt became tighter. Once I pulled over it had become so tight around my son's chest that it was causing him pain and difficulty breathing. I immediately attempted to unlatch it but it was impossible to push the button down. The only option was to remove the rear side panel (behind the back seat) and remove the entire locking mechanism from the car frame. It's been two days since the incident and the belt is still locked. This is very dangerous!!! and if it were to happen in a fender bender, fire or an accident could possibly cause serious injury if not death. . . I'm very concerned will get rid off this car. . . . . I will be filing a complaint to the manufacturer.
