2 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2006 Toyota Scion Xb

Failure Date: 08/24/2014

Was leaving the house, got in car, started engine, put my foot on the brake then put the gear shift into reverse and proceeded to pull out of garage when all of a sudden for no reason whatsoever the car just took off on its own too fast, while my foot was still on the brake, the car accelerated too quickly and I nearly crashed into the neighbor's garage door.

3 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Xb

Failure Date: 05/06/2013

I was driving my 2005 Scion Xb . As I slowed down to stop my car accelerated right through the stop sign across the highway and into a barbwire fence. . When I applied the brakes the engine accelerated . The vehicle stability control; traction control; check engine all lit up. I got the car started, but it ran hot and started smoking and would not hold speed.

4 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2008 Toyota Scion Xb

Failure Date: 04/22/2013

I was coming to a stop and my brakes stuttered and seemed as if they locked up. Immediately after my brake, abs, vsc and traction control lights came on. Minutes later they turned off but since then keep coming on and going off. The roads were very dry no rain or snow conditions. It has happened multiple times in the past week. Now I am scared to drive my car for the time being before they can get me into look at it. $120 to diagnose it and who knows how much afterwards. I have had this car for almost 5 years with only 80 miles on it when I purchased it. I am very upset for how much I've had to replace on this car. I only drive it to work and home with the occasional errands. Is it worth shelling out another $1000. This should be looked into for a recall.

6 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2008 Toyota Scion Xb

Failure Date: 12/30/2012

While driving on snowy and salted roads, the brake, abs, and vsc lights all came on at the same time. They remained on while driving on those same snowy and salty roads. The next day they eventually went off. Weeks later they came on again in wet weather and remained on. The local Toyota service center duplicated the issue and pulled the diagnostic codes c0210 & c1238. The Toyota service center said the entire hub and bearing assembly had to be replaced as the internal abs sensor which they said was at fault was not sold separately and only came as part of the hub and bearing assembly kit. Their quote to repair this issue was $915 for the replacement of one hub and bearing kit! this is ridiculous. Brake sensors should not fail due to snow, salt, or water coming into contact with them. This is a dangerous flaw in the design of this vehicle and one that is not commonly found with other makes and models, but is commonly reported all over the internet from other owners of Toyota's Scion Xb. Toyota should issue a safety recall for this vehicle and cover the cost to replace the sensors with ones that do not fail due to weather conditions.

7 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2006 Toyota Scion Xb

Failure Date: 07/17/2012

I was on my way home from work and when I came to a stop light, I tried to come a stop and when I tried to brake the car kept driving and I wrecked in to a fence and crashing into a tree.

8 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2004 Toyota Scion Xb

Failure Date: 03/03/2012

It had rained earlier in the day, but by the time of the incident, the rain had been over for a few hours. I was driving at 35 mph, and I reached a hill in the road, and I pressed on the accelerator to increase my momentum. I then eased off the accelerator pedal, but the accelerator pedal didn't ease up with me. Instead, it kept going down. I tried the brakes. They were locked up. After seeing all the horror stories of Toyota's floor mats, I immediately ripped my floor mat out from under my feet and threw it in the passenger seat. The car continued to accelerate up the hill. I tried the brakes again. Nothing. Then I reached down, and tried to pull the gas pedal up. I pulled as hard as I could, but the pedal stayed stuck. I looked down at my feet to make sure that I was not accidentally pressing the accelerator, but I was not. By this point in time, my car had increased its speed from the 35 mph to 65 mph. As I crested the top of the hill and ran through a stop light, I slammed on my brakes with all my strength. It took all my strength to slow the car down to about 40 mph from the 65 mph it had been at the top of the hill. I, then, slipped the car into neutral, and continued pressing on the brakes, which were still fighting me. The car's engine was still revving as if I had my foot firmly pressed down on the gas. By the time I was 20 ft away from another intersection and a red light in my direction and a green light for the cross-flowing traffic, I managed to get my car down to 10 mph. I had no time. I could either force it into park or go swiftly into oncoming traffic in the intersection. So I put it in park, but even in park the engine continued to rev as if I still had my foot pressing down on the gas pedal. The only thing that got the engine to stop revving was turning off the vehicle, but even then the engine continued to go for another 10 to 15 seconds.

9 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2009 Toyota Scion Xb

Failure Date: 01/06/2012

The issue I am having with my vehicle is the traction control. There is no way to disable it permanently. I have contacted the manufacturer several times to resolve this issue but they were unable to help. The intersection exiting my neighborhood is often busy and occasionally there is loose sand and gravel at the exit. At times, to cross the intersection safely, I will need to step on the accelerator a little more than usual. If my tires so happen to be sitting on a patch of loose sand or gravel, the traction control will activate when I accelerate. This cuts the power from my engine and instead of briskly crossing the intersection, my car, at a snails pace, crosses the intersection. The more time my vehicle spends in the intersection, the greater chance of an accident. The power is cut for too long in my opinion and I feel that my vehicle would be much safer without it. A little spin of the my tires would occur when I'm on the loose sand and gravel but once on normal pavement, it would be business as usual. With the traction control activated, there is a delay and once on normal pavement, it still has reduced power. The car does allow the driver to turn off the traction control at a stop but it reactivates after reaching a certain speed. I do not always know when I happen to stop on a patch of loose sand and gravel and I won't always remember to turn off the traction control at every stop.

10 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2006 Toyota Scion Xb

Failure Date: 12/28/2011

On 4 separate incidents, my car accelerated on it's own while sitting still. The last incident was on March 23rd while I was sitting still in a mcdonald's drive thru. My foot was on the brake and the car suddenly acted as if I had stepped fully down on the gas pedal. I had to really push my foot down on the brake to keep it from lunging forward. I immediately pushed it into park and the car stopped accelerating. This is very dangerous and I am extremely worried it will happen again!.

12 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2006 Toyota Scion Xb

Failure Date: 07/24/2010

This is the second time my 2006 Scion Xb has accelerated when I stepped on the brake. This time it happened when I was going uphill about 30 miles an hour. When I stepped on the brake, the engine accelerated and began racing. I was able to brake to a stop, but the only way to get the engine to slow was to turn off the ignition and restart the car. As with the previous incident, it's impossible that I was accidentally stepping on the accelerator, since I used the brake to bring the car to a halt. It was scary the first time. It was scary this time too.

13 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2004 Toyota Scion Xb

Failure Date: 07/17/2010

I purchased a 2004 Scion Xb for my daughter in June 2009. She came home from work last night (July 17, 2010) and when she stopped her scion in the driveway, with her foot on the brake (just before putting it in park), the car accelerated. She instinctly put the car in neutral and turned the ignition off. When I went outside to check it, the car was still idled up when I started the vehicle.

14 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2004 Toyota Scion Xb

Failure Date: 07/06/2010

While driving posted speed on interstate 71 southbound from cleveland towards columbus ohio, my car downshifted by itself and kept slowing down. I was able to get on the shoulder of the freeway when I noticed that the car had stalled. I attempted to restart the car. It would crank normally but would not start. I checked all the fluids, they were at operating levels. I performed a visual check under the car and hood for fluid leaks. There were none. I called a nearby (40 miles) Toyota dealer who dispatched a tow truck to pick us up and bring the car to their repair center in delaware ohio. This occurred yesterday afternoon, and as of this writing all they at byers Toyota, suspect is a possible ecm failure. They are still troubleshooting. They have not been able to make the car start and run successfully.

15 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2009 Toyota Scion Xb

Failure Date: 06/22/2010

While at a drive thru and foot firmly on the brake my 2009 Scion Xb surged by releasing the pressure on the brake, I quickly removed my foot and reapplied pressure and it did it again at a stop light same occurrence. Vehicle at both these times was not in motion. I took it to the dealership to ask if problems had been reported as both these instances happened within minutes of each other and they stated to leave the vehicle and they would check it out. However, I told them I needed a car they said service was closed and was unable to provide me with a car in order for me and my family to get home and for work the next day. The dealership was open it was 7:15pm at night but I could not get a loaner car in order for them to properly check my brakes and acceleration issues. I asked them to write down that I had approached them on the subject and they said they would. The next morning while going to work the vehicle was in motion going down a hillside when I applied brake the vehicle slowed as it should but again there was a surge in power and it accelerated and I had to remove my foot quickly from the brake and reapply to bring the vehicle back under control. We are again contacting the dealership today for another proper inspection.

16 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Xb

Failure Date: 04/26/2010

Driving about 4 miles an hour, the accelerator over powered the brake system. Rpm's where maxed even after the initial collision. With foot on the brakes and in park, the vehicle moved forward another 3 -4 feet to hit the same car again. The car will still move with the e-brake operated and full force on the brake pedal.

17 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2006 Toyota Scion Xb

Failure Date: 03/20/2010

I was driving in traffic going about 65mph. Traffic began to slow and when I tried to slow my car the engine began to rev up. Traffic came slower and I was able to turn off the engine, put the car in neutral and then restart the engine. After restarting the engine it reved again and again turned it off and on and the engine reset and ran smoothly. This happened once before about a year after we bought the car but I don't remember the date. We did not take it to the service center.

19 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2010 Toyota Scion Xb

Failure Date: 03/02/2010

Returned accelerator problem to dealer was told they would test drive it to try to duplicate the sticking. Then would contact Toyota "to see what Toyota wanted to do about it". I feel Toyota should be forced o buy back all of the vehicles they sold which are clearly potential death traps. Toyota tells me there is no electronic problem, while at the same time admitting they have no idea whatsoever what is causing sticky gas pedals. Their franchise to build and distribute vehicles in this country should be taken away, I don't care how many billions of dollars they lose.

2006 Scion Xb --- we have experienced same gas pedal problem on four or five occasions in the last two years. 26 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2009 Toyota Scion Xb

Failure Date: 11/19/2008

The (Toyota) Scion Xb has the same accelerator problem, I put in a floor mat on top of the issued floor mat and it has gotten stuck 2 or 3 times on the accelerator, luckily I was able to depress the brake strong enough to get into park and stop the vehicle, the worse case I drove over the island in my parking lot. I have since removed the extra floor mat and have not had a problem with this issue since. I know it's late notice but I just found out about this site.

27 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2008 Toyota Scion Xb

Failure Date: 11/12/2008

I bought a 2008 scion xd in September 2008. 6 weeks after I bought the car, I totaled it when steering on an on-ramp to the highway. It spun three times and finally stopped after hitting the guardrail. I was alone. I got whiplash. I am a very experienced driver but the car lost absolute control at a low speed (under 25 mph) but on wet blacktop in the fall in new england. . The car was $30 from being classified as a total. The body shop was owned by the dealer - not sure if the $30 discrepancy had anything to do with that. They also said the frame/unibody was slightly off and left me with a totally valueless car with 3,000 miles on it. Since then I do not trust the steering of the car. It does seem to swim at speeds over 55 - 60 mph - almost a hydroplaning feel to the steering on dry pavement. I wonder what it will take for it to be recalled?.

28 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2005 Toyota Scion Xb

Failure Date: 11/05/2008

I was driving my 2005 Scion Xb to my office. As I slowed down and turned into a parking space when I applied the brakes the engine accelerated to 3000 rpms jumped the curb and ran into the back of the building. When I reported these facts to a Toyota dealer they said they have never heard of a car doing that and it must have been a mistake on my part. Since the repair of the car in a period of two years the engine has done this four other times the repair people say they can't fix it unless it happens when they are working on the car. I believe the problem is in the electronic controls for the accelerator. I get no response from Toyota.

29 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2006 Toyota Scion Xb

Failure Date: 07/01/2008

We were driving down a seattle boulevard at about 40 miles an hour on the way to the airport when I put my foot on the brake pedal to stop for a red light. Instead of slowing, the engine sped up. I managed to get the car to stop by stomping on the brake, but at full stop the engine started revving toward 5000 rpm, the car was straining forward, and the only way to solve the problem was to turn off the ignition. On restarting the car, the problem went away. I called the dealer, whose service folks said there were no service notices about the issue. The next time I took the car in, there were no error codes in the electronics. There hasn't been a recurrence. But the incident was more than unsettling; it was downright scary.
