3 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2018

At on or about 7:30 pm on may13th 2018 our son was driving the families 2004 Toyota Sequoia northbound in 2 lane divided highway and no other traffic present. Weather was inclement, visibility clear but nothing out of the ordinary for florida. He was traveling 41 mph in a 45 in the left lane. No sooner than he went through the intersection traffic light controlled, (he had the right of way) did he go through what the deputy said was a slippery section of the road way covered with standing water. He released pressure on the accelerator to diminish hydroplaning and no sooner than that instant the vsc lights (variable speed control) lights illuminated in the dash. He reported that the right front wheel locked up and created a pivot point for the car to spin around 180 degrees clockwise, now facing oncoming traffic as he was now in the right lane. He was frantically attempting to regain control over the vehicle by constantly depressing the brakes in order to stop the vehicles motion however unsuccessful as he was pressing on the braking pedal with no response, the car now still in motion, hit the curb, and left the roadway by going now backwards down a steep embankment of over 12 feet and came to a halt. Luckily, a sheriffs deputy was traveling in the opposite direction and had witnessed this and was able to save my sons life by his quick response. The car had to be extracted out of the culvert with recovery cranes. Our family is so grateful to the deputy and that we have our son alive and without a scratch. He is a bit worn for wear being shook up like that. The Sequoia has always been serviced by Toyota and we enjoyed years of trouble-free ownership until this incident.

The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall related to the failure. The failure mileage was 57,000.

6 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2016

Abs/ trac/skid light come on at different speeds and brakes jerk you back and forth on road. If someone were next to you, you would hit them. SUV make abs grinding sound when this happens. The truck acts like it is in nutural, wont move. If you turn SUV on off a few times, its start acting normal again. My teen age daughter was jurked of road into grass 2times this mth. Bought SUV new.

11 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2015

Was told by a repair shop that my esc abs and break computer are malfunctioning causing my my brake pedal to be hard when applied also abs system operates while braking while in traffic at highway speeds and at normal speeds and city traffic during normal braking.

12 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/04/2015

Brakes do not work correctly. There was a recall on the Sequoia however, when I called Toyota last month they had told me that I was unable to have the recall taken care of because my time had expired! how can that be possible if there is a defect in the Sequoia? sure enough I was driving and there was a problem stopping as had been noted in the recall. This is extremely dangerous and unfair! if I get into an accident Toyota will be liable! what can I do about this???.

13 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2014

At apparently random times the ((!)) light indicating a problem with the breaks will turn on. Sometimes without warning the breaks will lock up at low speeds for a split second locking up the wheels. A little research showed that the 2003 of the same make and model had a recall (10v176000) that describes my problem in detail. I think this recall should be extended to 2004 model. I post on a forum got a lot of action with people having the same issue. This is very dangerous and since I regularly tow 5000lbs I would hate for this to occur then. The replacement part is available only from Toyota and at a serious price tag.

14 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/22/2014

Alarm sounded and road slippage light began flashing on dash board. Car slowed down on its own with grinding sound under the hood. Brakes made the sound much louder and braking was ineffective. Afterward trac off and trac - lights came on. Happened three times before I could get back home - about 2 miles. After shutting car off problem disappeared and did not reoccur in brief test drive. Condition would be dangerous in traffic as brakes were ineffective.

15 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2014

This appears to be exceptionally common. The vsc trac, vsc off and abs and parking break lights come on, the brakes are degraded and the front end vibrates as the brakes appear to be pulsing. This has happened at least 10 times over the years. At first we thought it was the emergency brake and we had the tightened, since it seemed that there might be something loose and it was engaging as we drove. That wasn't it, obviously and it continues to occur. With such a heavy, large car, we have nearly rear-ended others, but got lucky. Each time the car pulls to one side sharply and you have to stop and restart the car to get all the lights to turn off and come back to normal. I have had the brakes done and redone several times and this still occurs. . On each occasion we could get out of it, but its only a matter of time before someone gets hurt. Toyota has obviously ignored this. . I have download the complaints and there are >500 on this very topic. As I read through all these, the similarity between them is beyond coincidence and it appears that nothing actually fixes this. As of right now, I cannot let my family drive this car. I am bringing it into to the dealer (with copies of all these complaints) and see what comes of it. My hopes are not high. The recall in 2003 seems like they tried to address this (not clear if it was same issue). My concern really is that someone has to get killed. The issue with that logic is that dead people don't fill out complaints and if there was a death, it appears that the error/diagnostic codes do not register and get saved for retrieval (from reading all these complaints). Serious crashes would be investigated, codes would be looked at and nothing would come up. Case closed. What would happen, Toyota, if all accidents got re-investigated? how much would that cost? ask the gm ceo how much their investigation is costing.

16 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/22/2014

The skid control light flashes at randomly at low speeds causing the vehicle not to accelerate; and at times during a left turn;took vehicle to Toyota dealer I was informed that skid computer was identifying a skidding condition during wet conditions, but the surface was dry. This defect can cause an accident from the rear or oncoming traffic. Other 2004 models have reported similar problems with esc, trac control and abs.

17 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2013

While driving and gradually pressing the brake pedal, my 2004 Sequoia suddenly and abruptly stops while being driven on city streets or freeway at speeds between 35 to 55 mph. Immediately following the abrupt and unexpectedly stop, the brakes appear to remained engaged (vehicle is stopped) momentarily (for a few seconds); although, the brake pedal is no longer depressed. In order to get the SUV moving forward again, one must press the gas pedal (more than usual), because the vehicle seems to hesitate or be stuck/stopped. Because of the unusually high gas pedal requirement, the vehicle suddenly/dangerously lunges forward. This hole unexpected, abrupt stopping and abrupt rapid forward process is quite unsettling and scary. We're the original owners of this 2004 Sequoia and the vehicle has always been maintained and inspected 2 to 4 times per year by Toyota dealers in orange county, calif. Based on the commonality and high incidence of this anomaly on these vehicles, Toyota should voluntarily or mandatorily take swift corrective action.

18 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

Driving to a stop when vsc lights, abs, check engine light, trac off dashboard indicator lights turned on. When brakes were applied, experienced a jumping. Already had brakes replaced, tires rotated and alignment done. Contacted auto service technician and was told after a diagnostic was performed that issue is due to a faulty computer system with the abs system how the computer reads the car performance. Was told that only a Toyota dealer would have to replace the entire computer system which is costly. The warning lights go on and off randomly as if the computer system is malfunctioning.

19 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2013

My break light continue to come on and will remain on until I turn off the SUV. I have taken it back to the deal which I bought it from and they supposed to have reset it, however, it came back on a week later I took it back and they kept it all day to fix it. They could not tell me what was causing the light to come on after keeping the vehicle all day. I took it to an independent dealer cosby body shop and he checked the SUV but could not see what was wrong since the light was not on. The brakes did not show enought sinificant ware or tare and there was brake fluid in the brake fluid clyder he did not need to add any. I was told to bring it back when it comes on again and I did. He checked and discovered that it maybe the brake sincer. Now, I am calling toyato for assistance to see if there has been a recall on this vehicle.

20 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2011

Undercarriage rust hole 6" diameter and more through steel plate under vehicle. 74,000 miles original owner and heated garage. This Sequoia should be included in the rust recall. The underbody rust for an '04 with only 74,000 miles is ridiculous. Extreme rust around brake components.

21 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2010

Problem with ecu unit, vsc trac and trac off light coming on in vehicle. The brakes were recently changed and it is now making a screeching noise. Something is not right. When I purchased this vehicle and took it to Toyota for some other recall they told me that my ecu unit needed to be changed. The ecu unit is now on recall but they are restricting it to only 2003 model. I have a 2004 & it has the same problem the 2003 has. I feel sorry for all the money they had to pay out with other defects but I feel if there is a problem then they should own up to it and fix it. My vehicle is also losing power on turns and I think it is from this same issue based on the forums I have read. This can be dangerous especially when making turns in oncoming traffic. I would feel really bad for Toyota if I were to get in an accident for something they can own up to and just repair in good faith. Very frustrated consumer. Crash was missed by inches because the truck slows down on turns.

22 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

Vsc control light is on and vehicle has less traction control, causing me to drive it slow and very careful to avoid loss of control. The Sequoia model one year previous had an issue, I believe the 2004 model does as well. Also brake replacement occurs to frequently. I replace my breaks make repairs 2-3 yr. The same occured with my Toyota forerunner. Toyota needs to beef up their breaking systems. It is a well documented problem for years and years.

23 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2010

Vsc trac light and trac off light staying on on my 2004 Sequoia.

24 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2010

We have 88,000 miles on our 2004 Toyota Sequoia and it is time to put on the 3rd set of front brakes on this car. If there a problem with the brake system?? our sister in-law also has a Sequoia around the same mileage and has not replaced the brake ever.

25 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2010

I have noticed on my 2004 Toyota Sequoia that when I brake and hit a bump or pothole, the whole brake system seems to tremble and lose the ability to brake.

26 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/14/2009

I was driving my 2004 Toyota Sequoia SUV and had to proceed with a sudden stop and the braking system suffered a malfunction which resulted in last of braking preassure and some kind of strange sound. This was almost an accident, I was lucky not to hit the car in front. I changed the brakes, and had my SUV inspected in the Toyota dealer just to find out that there is a big problem with tundra, Sequoias , and land cruisers from 2003 to 2005 with the electronic stability control module which affect the brake system and the traction control system, aprox when car reach 45,000 miles and no recall have been made. The repair part cost 1,500 up to 2,300 dollars. . Read more...

27 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2006

Having problems with the brakes, rotors and components. Shaking and wearing uneven. Toyota will not stand behind their warranties. I know that many other people are having same problems. This is the second Toyota I had with this problem. This is a warning to all. . . Speak-up. . . Make them stand behind their product, before someone get badly hurt or dies over faulty equipment. You got it Toyota. . Fix-it-right. Show us the love. . . We have given you .

28 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2004

: the contact stated while driving the vehicle it makes noises while applying the brakes. The first time the vehicle was taken to the dealership, the brakes were checked and the brake system was replaced. While driving home the contact still heard noises while braking. The vehicle was taken back to the dealership where the mechanic test drove the vehicle with the contact. They heard the noises coming from the vehicle. This time nothing was done to repair the vehicle. The vehicle has been taken back to the dealership a total of five times and they are unable to duplicate the problem with the vehicle.
