36 Steering problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 04/15/2019

Just driving along, and feels like brakes grab and jerk the wheel and vsc trac lights go on. Problem has been occurring intermittently. Can be at highway speeds, but also happens at any speed. Very dangerous and scary. Vsc-trac and trac-off lights randomly illuminated on dry, level pavement when brakes were applied, causing a loud grinding noise (much louder than normal application of anti-lock brakes).

Tamara recall: I was going 60 mph when my traction control lights started blinking. It started making a grinding noise and front end shaking and loss of power steering it has 190,000 miles on it.

38 Steering problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 11/01/2018

Driving 45mph on straight road the vehicle vsc engaged pulling hard to the right and decelerating quickly. I pulled over, called dealership and was told to drive it the 2 miles to dealership. Within 100 of dealership I crossed intersection and car suddenly decelerated, engaged the assistance again and I was almost struck by truck that swerved and almost hit pedestrian. Dealer said it was a yaw steering sensor. Part was unobtainable or possible within 8 weeks, and no after market parts available. Mechanic recommended vehicle not be driven. Toyota declared part obsolete. I researched and found this was already at the NHTSA attention but that they closed the investigation. How is this acceptable?.

40 Steering problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 09/01/2018

Driving the vehicle at about 60mph, grinding sound, loss of power steering control, pulls to the right side, deceleration, loud noise like a tire blowout, vsc lights on dash come on. This has happened 4 times while driving the vehicle, no warning and you must pull over and turn the engine off and it will reset so you are able to start the vehicle to continue. Very scary incidents!!!.

42 Steering problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 10/19/2017

Frame rust. My mechanics will not lift the truck because of extensive frame rust.

43 Steering problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 10/02/2017

My vehicle's vehicle stability control is engaging for no apparent reason while driving straight on a clear, clean, dry road. This has happened multiple times per month. Both on highway and city street. (25mph-70mph) controlling the car can become hard to do. Pretty loud grinding sound is heard when it is engaged. Fear an accident may happen because the vehicle may pull due to the brakes engaging unexpectedly.

44 Steering problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 10/01/2017

While driving going any speed low or high a vsc trac off light appears on the gage cluster and starts a high pitched noise and abs locks up on my passenger side pulling me to the right almost hitting another car or any pedestrians that may be there.

45 Steering problem of the 2005 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 09/08/2017

Va. State inspection failed due to left front sway bar link broken and steering rack leaking and caused bushings to come apart due to corrosion from rusting out frame. Previous work done on 04/02/17 revealed issue but no one informed us of any related recalls.

46 Steering problem of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 07/01/2017

Abnormal rust all over underside of vehicle including frame, structural components, brake lines, steering components … etc. Frame and steering/suspension components rusting out. Rear differential rusting out. Cab mounts rusting out. Spare tire hardware rusting out. Transmission cooler lines about to burst from corrosion. Rear tow assembly rusting out. Entire underside is rotting out. Known issue which has plagued hundreds of owners, but Toyota has not recalled this model year. Extremely dangerous; one brake line has already gone out resulting in a loss of braking. Toyota applied an undercoating circa 2013 but they just sprayed over an already rusted frame and other components without proper preparation which actually accelerated the corrosion and rot. Deceptive and unethical business practices. Vehicle cost over $50,000 new in 2003 and only has just over 120,000 miles on it. This should not be happening. Please help. Please investigate.

47 Steering problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 06/29/2017

About a month ago I was driving on the highway at about 60mph and all of a sudden my vehicle began to jerk erraticly, became hard to control steering and braking, seemed to be braking on its on, it made a very loud grinding noise and some sort of alarm starting beeping and my vsc lights and traction control lught starting flashing. This lasted about 3 minutes and continues to happen sporadically every 2 to 3 days. There is no cause and no rhythm or reason for this to happen. I am always on a seemingly flat smooth surface moving straight ahead at a moderately high rate of speed between 50 and 70mph. .

48 Steering problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 05/24/2017

Takata recall. Vehicle stability control system my 2002 Sequoia began beeping, making a loud grinding noise and the traction light came on. I had little to no control of the vehicle. I am scared because it have happen on the freeway going 60-65ph. I literly do not have any control of my car everytime this happens.

49 Steering problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 03/11/2017

While driving on flat, dry, level pavement at freeway speeds the vsc has been activating causing the steering wheel to jerk to the right. As the steering wheel pulls the vehicle to the right there is a chime, then the vsc and trac system shuts its self off and the "off" light stays illuminated until the engine is shut off. Upon restart, the vsc is on again and the cycle repeats. The check engine light is not on. There is no way to predict when the wheel will be jerked again. Seems very dangerous.

50 Steering problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 11/16/2016

Vsc trac light comes on while driving, activates brakes and car pulls and swerves while driving.

51 Steering problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 11/14/2016

I purchased my Sequoia in 2003 and the trac off/vsc trac lights started turning on a few months after purchase. I have told the dealer every time I bring the car for service and have always been told that they cannot find a problem. Once I turn off car the lights go off. Well, on July 2015 while traveling on a windy road at 35 mph, we heard an warning alarm sound for the first time and the steering locked for about two seconds and the car felt like we had a flat tire or dragging something underneath. After about 10 seconds the car resumed back to normal as if nothing had happened. About two weeks later, I was backing out of a parking stall and it did the exact thing, including steering wheel locking. I thought I had raned over something, but the car went back to normal. Now every two weeks after I get on the freeway this seems to happen, one time it sounded like my engine fell off. Sometimes is worse than others and it doesn't matter if I'm going 25 or 65 mph. A few months ago I was traveling at 65 and the alarm came on, the grinding and dragging noise and my car started slowing down and swirved to the right. I just barely missed a motorcyclist. Lucky no one was behind me or I would have been rear ended. I purchased Toyota for their safety and quality reputation. I take good care of my car and safety of my family is my priority. As I stated before, I have been complaining about this issue to my Toyota dealer for years and they tell me there is no problem with my car. Now my problem is much bigger than just a light turning on. This should be a major concern and we should not wait for a loss of life to happen. Any car that loses power in the middle of a freeway without warning should be of grave concern to all. I love my car but cannot afford to trade it in.

52 Steering problem of the 2016 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 11/07/2016

Takata recall. This vehicle has excessive vibration in the steering wheel / vehicle when at 55mph or higher. I've been numerous times to the dealearship for this issue and they keep telling me this is normal. I spent almost $65,000. 00 on this vehicle and the vibrations is unacceptable. This is uncomfortable and could ultimately pose a serious hazard on the road. Something has to be causing this vibration and Toyota needs to find a fix for it. The vehicle comfort while driving is not a pleasant one. Also the wipers make excessive noise while in use. Again the dealership says this is normal. But this is so loud that it is hard to concentrate while driving with this noise.

53 Steering problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 10/27/2016

Complaint - electronic stability control, steering, vehicle speed control while driving my 2002 Toyota Sequoia while turning on city street & highway I encountered two significant safety issues the traction control system comes on while driving at various speeds, the vsc and traction warning lights abs & engine lights are illuminated as the vehicle pulled to the left/right. When the issue occurred, the vehicle makes a grinding sound and pulls very hard to the left/right. The vehicle loses acceleration and feels like the anti-lock braking mechanism is being engaged. The jerking pull resulted in crossing multiple lanes of the highway before control of the vehicle was regained. This is going to cause deaths known issues with other Sequoias.

54 Steering problem of the 2006 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 10/01/2016

Spent over 2k at Toyota carlsbad for repairs 1-2 years ago. . Problem accelerating and lights coming up for check engine, track off and vsc. . Took again and they are asking for nearly 5k for repairs. . Problem accelerating in freeway and tpms lighs on. .

55 Steering problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 09/16/2016

My complaint stems from the vehicle stability control (vsc) issue that commonly plagues the 2001-2001 Toyota Sequoia. As many others have filed complaints over this vsc issue, mine is no different. My Sequoia, a 4x4 sr5 with 160k miles, works flawlessly other than the vsc lights being constantly illuminated while driving. The results of the malfunction, possibly from the yaw rate sensor, present a momentarily loss of power and random unexplained steering events. The only way to temporary clear the vsc lights and the effects of the malfunction is to completely stop the vehicle, turn off the ignition and restart the vehicle. I fear a loss of control of the vehicle while my wife and kids are driving at highway speeds. I would like to see Toyota issue a formal recall or pay for a new yaw rate sensor and the consumer pays the labor. Other than the vsc issue, the Sequoia is a great vehicle overall.

56 Steering problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 09/12/2016

Intermittent vsc control warnings, breaking engaged with pulling vehicle steering to the right. Sometimes with only the warning lights and check lights. First occurrence day after purchase of this used vehicle (50 miles). Took back to dealership and could not find nothing wrong, very scare . Speed has been between 10 to 65 mph. Highway and city driving.

57 Steering problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 08/23/2016

When driving 70 mph on the interstate, the vehicle periodically yanks hard to the right, it sounds like I have a flat tire, front right tire feels and sounds like it stopped turning. Car slows, vsc system idiot lights flash and beep. After I have successfully though unintentionally run another car off the road it returns to normal. The idiot lights stay on until the car is turned off. Has been taken to mechanics numerous times in last few weeks, cannot find a problem. But keeps happening. Mechanic is aware of 2003 and newer recall for the same reason, tried recalibrating yaw sensor successfully. 3 days later it happened again mechanics says the sensor may be periodically malfunctioning, over correcting for a nonexistent problem. It has happened going 30 mph once, as well as today the lights and beeping went off at a dead stop in my driveway. Went straight to mechanics, turned off car to go inside, nothing found when he pulled it in.

58 Steering problem of the 2005 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 08/12/2016

My vehicle's traction control light was coming on periodically, and when that would happen the engine would cut out, & I would not be able to accelerate. I took it in to get it repaired. After the repairs I was driving at about 20 mph, and as I was breaking to turn a corner the abs, vbs, brake and traction control lights came on. My breaks made a grinding noise, the car began to shake, there were no breaks or steering control, and the engine cut out. This was very dangerous as I had no control and was on a city street in front of a park with children, and I had my son with me. Luckily I wasn't going very fast as the speed limit is 25 mph, and I was approaching the park and my street to turn on to. I was able to get stopped by hitting a curb but couldn't get control of the vehicle otherwise.

59 Steering problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 07/01/2016

While driving my 2002 Toyota Sequoia, I encountered two significant safety issues that were recalled as part of a prior nhsta campaign (10v-176). While my Toyota is manufactured within the same window of a recall, my VIN was not included. Nhsta has opened an active investigation (pe16006) in response to other owners with the same issues. Issue #1: traction control system on several occasions, the vehicle would not accelerate properly from a stopped position. The code based on the vcs warning light indicated an issue with the center position of the steering angle sensor (sas). The sensor was replaced and the ecu programming was updated to resolve the safety issue. Issue #2: electronic stability control on multiple occasions, the vehicle lost control while driving due to an issue with a faulty yaw rate sensor. While driving at various speeds, the vsc and traction warning lights illuminated as the vehicle pulled to the right. When the issue occurred, the vehicle makes a grinding sound and pulls very hard to the right. The vehicle loses acceleration and feels like the anti-lock braking mechanism is being engaged. The jerking pull resulted in crossing multiple lanes of the highway before control of the vehicle was regained. The mechanic experienced the same issue, and had to pull over to regain composure after almost getting into an accident. The faulty yaw sensor was replaced to repair the defect. After experiencing the issues with the Toyota sensors that almost caused an accident, I had the faulty sensors replaced. I have requested reimbursement from Toyota but was denied. The repair was for the safety issues which are under recall for the same model year (April 2002 ¿ April 2003), as my vehicle is manufactured in may 2002. The repairs included the defective steering sensor and the yaw stability sensor required to safely drive the vehicle.

60 Steering problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 06/12/2016

While driving on dry roads, the vsc anti-slip comes on and starts braking, occassionally causing the vehicle to pull to one side, and engages the abs which makes the car vibrate and makes the driver question whether the brakes work or not.

61 Steering problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 05/31/2016

Traction control malfunction. When in motion the car engages the brakes for no reason, intermittently applying the brakes causing the car to pull & swerve, and shudder. This happens when going straight, turning, or just driving down the road.

62 Steering problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 05/25/2016

Vse/trac light and trac off light comes on, beeping sound. Traveling at 70 mph or 65 mph vehicle veers left and steering becomes difficult. Just this happened three times within 24 hours on interstate driving. This is the same problem discussed in a recall of the 2003 through 2005 models. Many problems of the same nature are reported on internet forums for the 2000 t-model. This is very dangerous. It happens when the road conditions are dry and no hazardous conditions.

63 Steering problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 05/14/2016

Regardless of speed a warning bell will sound, several instrument lights come on and the brakes activate causing the vehicle to pull to the right. I've experienced this numerous times with seemingly no common denominator. Neither speed nor steering input seem to be the trigger for this. I've taken it to my local Toyota dealership with no satisfaction and contacted Toyota of America customer service with no satisfaction.

64 Steering problem of the 2004 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 05/12/2016

Vsc track sensor and engine check lights came on while driving at 40 mph in the city. I have noticed in the past two months that when I slow to make a turn the breaks lock up and grind, but not always. The safety break is also on. I have read that when the vsc lights do come on that you cannot go over 50 miles an hour or when on the highway the car will slow down to 50 and cannot go any faster. I'm afraid of this happening when traveling on the highway.

65 Steering problem of the 2004 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 05/07/2016

Me and my family were driving southeast on highway 280 on the far right lane trying to take junction 85 gilroy when all of a sudden through tire on the front driver side came off and the car just was limp on that side and all I can see was sparks and smoke my whole family was terrified . I was trying with all my strength to control the car and with the will of god I managed to safely stop the car . I step out to see what happened and the tire was stuck under the car and completely of the joint with the brecksame still connected to the tire.

66 Steering problem of the 2001 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 04/06/2016

Vehicle pulls to the right especially when stopping.

67 Steering problem of the 2004 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 03/17/2016

Last week, (3/17/16) my neighbor was taking her three children to school in her 2004 Toyota Sequoia. She was traveling on a new road at approximately 30 mph when the front end of the vehicle dropped on driver's side. She thought she had a flat tire so she steered to the side of the road. It appears the driver's side, lower ball joint failed (see photos). I called hendrick Toyota of apex, nc and talked with mr. John specht (919-335-1678). He checked the VIN and said the lower ball joints had a recall and were changed on Aug. 15, 2007. He also suggested I contact Toyota to request their assistance to cover the cost to repair the vehicle (case no. 1603171574). He advised the vehicle be brought in for the airbag recall too. The vehicle was towed home on a dolly to prevent any damage to the transmission. The vehicle has 215,444 miles and was not used for off-road driving. The vehicle recently passed state inspection with no problems noted about the front end. If the lower ball joints were already replaced in a recall (2007) what did they replace them with, and how did they correct the problem? this failure could have caused a deadly accident at higher speed. When a lower ball joint breaks, the driver can only steer with one wheel. Bruce somers for melissa wisdom.

68 Steering problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 01/01/2016

I have a 2002 Sequoia and the dealership has been doing the repairs since I purchased it in 2003. I took in the recall for the ball joints and even before I received it I had an issue. When turning right, mostly in curves there is a loud grinding in the frontend and has been doing this since I purchased the car . They told me that here was not a problem but I am still having this problem and now the trac has to stabilize my car, this has happen while traveling no turns. The trac light is on and off constantly for whatever reason they can not explain it to me. This is getting dangerous for me I have spent money on this car lately but this is a very large repair and need to know what can be done to get this fixed I was also told that there is not an issue with my airbag as well that my car was not affected. I need help with this, this is my only transportation and this is getting dangerous.

69 Steering problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 11/06/2015

The brakes of the car ,and we I drive I can't drive more than 80 miles pr hour because it checks. I fixed the brakes and the light stay on for ever now every time I have to remember to take the foot brake.

70 Steering problem of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia

Failure Date: 10/01/2015

Identical problem as described by many others. Vsc-trac and trac-off lights randomly illuminated on dry, level pavement when brakes were applied, causing a loud grinding noise (much louder than normal application of anti-lock brakes), and car pulled and would not stop no matter how hard the brake pedal was pressed. First couple times, brakes were applied to slow the vehicle in traffic, so the failure to fully stop wasn't noticed. This now happens consistently whenever I drive and does not matter how fast or slow I am going. These failures clearly put vehicles at risk of accidents, and it is difficult to understand why the 2003 Sequoias were recalled for vsc issues, but not the 2002, when the parts being replaced fit both years. I have only had the vehicle for 2 years with 140,000 miles.
