Nine problems related to tire tread/belt have been reported for the 1998 Toyota Tacoma. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
My truck had been vibrating really bad I was driving west bound on i20 when I heard a pop then it sounded like my tire blow out so I pulled over to discover that my tread had separated from my tire and had torn up my passage side of my truck.

Vehicle was inspected by dealer and firestone auto center, both concurred that all tires show sign of tread separation on a 1998 Toyota, tocoma; original equipment, p215/70r14, dot# w2hyawa351. Firestone will not change tires because tires were not cover under the recall or the consumer advisory. Tires are available for analysi.
Tires show cracks where the tread meets the sidewall. Tires are now making a slapping noise. ( dot number: w2hy tire size: p215/70r14 ).
On 07-07-00 while traveling south on I-81 in virginia, the right rear tire suddenly blew out. After changing the tire, inspection of the flat tire revealed that the tire tread had seperated from the tire. ( dot number: w2hh4wa tire size: p225/75r15 ).
Consumer was traveling about 60mph and heard a popping noise and there was a blowout. Also, noticed a four- inch cut where the torn tire and metal treads were showing. The tires are defective. The customer feels all four tires should be replaced.
Tires look like tread is breaking off. Want them replaced ASAP (dot number: w29vawi tiresize: 265/75r).
Pe00020; tire tread separation: tire on the rear driver's side is showing signs of tread separation. There is a small crack about a quarter of an inch below the top of the tread.
