Failure Date: 03/14/2024

Hi, I had the recall preventive performed by Toyota for rusting and corrosion of the frame. Now, the vehicle is rusting throughout the frame and is very very unsafe to drive. Toyota is claiming that it was a program and not a recall and had no documentation to prove. Toyota performed the recall and now the frame is still at risk to crack and very unsafe.

I have had a 1997 Toyota Tacoma and the frame broke. Now I have a 1999 Toyota Tacoma and the frame has broken because of rust. We want to know if the Toyota is standing by and repairing or if they are giving compensation for this issue. How do we find out about this? the truck looks very nice. Everything else works and looks like nothing is wrong. Something has to be defective.

Tl the contact owns a 1999 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign number: 01e041000 (trailer hitches). The manufacturer had not sent a recall notification. The vehicle was purchased from an independent source who did not mention if the vehicle was inspected before it was sold. The contact was not informed of the vehicle's extensive rust, corrosion, and holes pertaining to the frame until after it was purchased. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer issued 14 technical service bulletins regarding the structure. The manufacturer was contacted to determine if the recall remedy would still apply. The contact was waiting on their response. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 103,000.

My truck frame had a recall and Toyota told me it was solid. I had it rustproofed and today while driving home on the back road with my dogs in the truck my leaf spring fell off the frame due to a rotted frame. If I had been on a highway doing 60, I would not be writing you. Had to have it brought home on a flat bed truck and call for a ride for me and the dogs. Disgusting! they still are having problems with these frames on newer models and are not willing to work with me to repair this problem.

Takata recall.

10 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2016

In the summer of 2016 I had noticed a long strip of metal hanging below my 1999 Toyota Tacoma. It turned out to be a part of the frame. After a more thorough investigation I had found the whole frame rusted. Then through research deemed it not safe to drive. In 2009 , after hearing from a friend(not Toyota), of an frame rust issue I made an appointment for an inspection at the dealer and was told it was good with no recommendation to replace nor treat . I left thinking I had a good one (frame) that wasn't affected by the rust problem. Fast forward to 2016 when obvious signs of the issue become present and then find out there was a 15 year window to have the frame replaced, treated or bought back. This was not my daily driver but depended on frequently for hauling and projects. So here it sits going on three years still not knowing what to do with it. It runs great and too nice to scrap. And probably to costly to fix. A buy back would be the best resolution.

11 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2016

Frame has holes. Vehicle was ok until this year. Not safe to drive. Toyota will do nothing.

12 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/24/2016

1999 Toyota Tacoma. Our local Toyota dealer inspected the frame last week and confirmed that it has the rust issue covered by the 15 year extended warranty except for the fact that the 15 years ended two years ago for my vehicle. Toyota applied a thick undercoat in 2011 but it actually prevented the discovery of the defect until after the 15 year extended warranty had expired. This is clearly a recall situation or at the very lease they should honor the extended warranty on my truck because they hide the defect.

13 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2015

My 1999 Tacoma has just been declared unsafe to drive by a local repair shop due to excessive rust on the frame (I brought it to the shop to have some a/c work done). As part of the Toyota service program, the truck was inspected last in October 2013, and passed the corrosion test. At that point the truck had 106,000 miles. I had purchased the truck afterwards, based on this inspection being done by Toyota and passing. The truck now has 119,000 miles on it, and it is not safe to drive. I called Toyota corporate and they stated that since the truck is now outside the 15-year coverage period, I have no options. I shared that the truck was inspected by them and that it is nearly impossible for a truck to go from no rust issue to significant rust issue in less than 2 years and less than 14,000 miles. She (phyllis) agreed with me and said that she would be frustrated also and that it makes sense that this shouldn't have happened, but it is now outside of the period so I have no options.

14 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2015

Noticed my truck was leaking gas. Upon further inspection it appears to be coming from the tank and then I noticed that the frame is rotted out around where the leaf spring is mounted. My truck frame was inspected by Toyota years ago and I was told that it passed. I know about the extended frame warranty but just my luck it expired for my truck at the beginning of this year. I usually do a visual of the frame when I wash my truck but didn't notice anything. I'm not sure what I should do I can't drive my truck this way. I know Toyota is going to give me the run around.

15 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2015

I purchased my 1999 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 11/2013 at a small dealership. I checked the vehicle out pretty good before purchase and found lite surface rust on frame and thought nothing to worry about. 12/2014 I was working on emergency brake, do to sticking and notices a large rust hole at the rear leaf spring. I started looking on the internet for local frame repair company's and found out about the problem with this year Tacoma. I called Toyota service and they said there was nothing they could do because the warranty ran out on frame rust. I called a local Toyota to buy a new frame, they told me they don't manufacture that year anymore. I took it to a frame repair shop and they told me it would cost $2600 to fix the rear half section of the frame and to replace the front section as soon as possible. The whole frame, if they locate one used from out west and repair would be $6000. It really seems that there is a serious safety issue here and there hasn't been a recall on the frame. If they recall they have to fix all the years mentioned.

16 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2015

It was under warranty for rusting underneath. I'ts a1999 Tacoma the manufactor said the warranty expired in I think March for my truck. But my frame broke in August and they (Toyota) are not going to do nothing for me about it. I didnt recive any of the recall notices from them and I told them this . They told me they could only do what the dmv sends them well I have had the truck since 2006. So you would think somebody would have sent something!!! my man is sick and I have to bum a ride and that really sucks!I'm not used to mother may I. Any way it's all a blame game.

17 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2014

The Toyota Tacoma 1999 that I purchased had a 15 year extended warranty due to a defective frame susceptible to rust. The warranty ended on 4/10/2014 but I didn't purchase the vehicle until 7/27/2014. The dealer did not disclose the poor frame condition and allowed me to purchase an unsafe vehicle at the kbb value. I cannot afford to repair the defect or buy a new vehicle. Is there anything that NHTSA can do? is there any way that Toyota can be asked to extend the warranty by one more year? can they make this an actual recall instead of an extended warranty? thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

18 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/29/2014

We recently discovered a large rust hole in the frame in front of the rear wheel of our 1999 Toyota Tacoma. After talking to our mechanic about repair, we discovered that Toyota had issued a warranty extension for frame due accelerated rusting of the frame and manufacturer defect, but we were never notified. We contacted Toyota, and they said the warranty had expired on June 10, 2014. Apparently, the previous owner had been contacted, but not us. We purchased the truck on 2/20/2013. Our mechanic has warned against driving the vehicle due to frame rot. Toyota is not willing to extend the warranty even though we were unaware of it and not notified. So, we now have a vehicle that runs well and is in good shape mechanically and body-wise, but we have concerns about driving it safely on the highway.

19 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2014

We just learned recently about the issue with the Toyota frames rusting out and when we took the vehicle to Toyota to get it looked at they responded that the 15 year frame warranty expired on 5-27-2014. We were never notified by Toyota about this issue, nor were we aware of this problem until recently when a friend had an issue and told us about it. If Toyota would have notified us we would have had the frame inspected prior to the warranty period expiring. They did notify me in 2007 or so about a recall on my 1990 Toyota but not this one for my 1999 which is very a serious issue.

20 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/14/2014

On March 26, 2014, I learned by word of mouth about the rust corrosion problem with Toyota Tacoma's. On that day I contacted Toyota to verify the information I received. I was told by Toyota about the "rust corrosion program" and that my Tacoma would need to be inspected and that I had until sept. 2014 to get this completed, as that is when the promotion expired for my truck. I was also told that a letter notifying me went out in 2008 and I was provided the address it was send, which was not the address where my truck was registered in 2008. Thus I did not receive any information from Toyota about the program. On April 14, 2014, the frame on my 1999 Toyota Tacoma was inspected by a Toyota dealership. Upon completion of the inspection, it was determined that my Tacoma was "unsafe" to drive due to a large rust hole on the frame from the left side of the fuel tank to the rear of the tank. When I reported this information to Toyota they told me that the promotion had expired for my truck. I referenced the information that I initially received from Toyota and they informed me that the information that I received was wrong and that they were unable to do anything for me. I told them that I had never received any information from Toyota regarding the rust issue, so how would I know to do anything. They told me that they were "sorry" and they couldn't do anything about it. I contacted the executive offices and again was told there was nothing that could be done and they were sorry. So now I have an unsafe truck and Toyota is not willing to do anything about it.

21 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2011

The vehicle was recalled due to corrosion in the frame beneath the leaf springs. The repair was supposed to be fixed in July 2011 by spraying anti-corrosion chemicals. However, this did not satisfy the problem as the rear is so rusted out it is unsafe to drive. Neither the Toyota dealer nor the Toyota company will fix this now as part of the recall because it is "expired" since the corrosion now is so complete, it is obvious that the "fix" in 2011 did not work. The truck has less that 125,000 miles and should not be rusted out.

22 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2011

I purchased this vehicle in 02/11, from my brother. I heard about a recall and called betten Toyota, now Toyota of grand rapids, but was told the VIN was not affected by this recall. Early in 2014, I noticed the cab corner had dropped down. I looked underneath the vehicle and saw the frame was rusted. I called Toyota of gr; they told me to call Toyota customer service. I called Toyota's main office (customer service); they assigned me a case number and told me to bring it to a local dealer and have them check it. I brought it to Toyota of gr where their mechanic deemed it unsafe to drive. Toyota of gr sent this report to Toyota customer service. On 4/24/14 I received a letter from Toyota customer service that "Toyota extended the warranty on your Tacoma for a period of 15 years with no mileage limitation from the vehicle's in service date, for perforation of the vehicle's frame caused by rust corrosion. Based on a recent inspection of your Tacoma, it appears that the frame is indeed perforated. As a result, Toyota is prepared to repurchase your Tacoma. " on 4/25/14 I received a letter from Toyota motor sales, u. S. A. Inc. Stating that they would repurchase my vehicle subject to the confirmation that my vehicle complies with all of the conditions of the warranty extension. I was asked to sign an agreement accepting their repurchase amount and send it back to them with a copy of the title. This was completed on 4/28/14. I received a call from Toyota 4/30/14 stating that the truck did not qualify because of the date it was put into service. I found out I missed it by four months. If they would have told me when I purchased the vehicle 3 years earlier that it did qualify, this would have been taken care of at that time. They had my VIN before they sent the letter out on 4/25/14 when they said they would buy it back. We would appreciate your help with this situation.
