Failure Date: 05/09/2018

99 Toyota frame is rusted through when carfax report specifically listed a Toyota dealer checked same vehicle for frame rust in 2014 with 207000 miles on it. It passed if that's what u want to call it. Now in 2018 with an additional 15,000 miles on it, it has rusted through.

2 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 10/26/2017

Frame rusted out, causing the body to drop and a bolt to settle on my gas tank, resulting in a fuel leak. Needs a new frame to fix.

3 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2017

Toyota sent a recall card in 2011 to rust proof the frame. They covered up the rust and said the vehicle was good to go. The frame has rusted to the point the vehicle is not safe to drive. I have a friend that had the same problem and they purchased his vehicle and I know several people have had their frame's replaced at no charge by Toyota. They avoided the issue and now I have a unsafe vehicle.

6 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2016

Toyota Tacomas of this year are a safety hazard due to frames that rust through and become weak to the point of failure. Toyota has not done enough with its voluntary service repair leaving thousands of these trucks on the road and putting all drivers at risk of death or serious injury from frame breakage. Toyota should recall any and all remaining trucks and provide frame repair suitable for safe on-road operation. My vehicle frame is nearly entirely rusted through. It was inspected during Toyotas service campaign and found not to be bad enough for repair, now it is too late and no longer qualifies for repair. The picture provided shows my driver side frame rail bottom. The top of this frame rail is so soft I can push through it with my fingers. The passenger side frame rail has marginally less rust through but is still in an unsafe condition. These vehicles are dangerous and someone will be injured, if someone already hasnt, as a result of these poor quality frames.

7 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 11/19/2015

Toyota sent a recall a few years ago to check and fix a problem with rust on the vehicle frame. I took it in for the 'fix', now (11/19/15) I find out my frame has rusted through and is very unsafe to drive. This is a popular truck and there are alot on the road, some may be in the same situation I am in. Toyota's response was' we can't help you'. After the 'fix' I was told that I would have no problems in the future.

9 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2015

My 1999 Tacoma has just been declared unsafe to drive by a local repair shop due to excessive rust on the frame (I brought it to the shop to have some a/c work done). As part of the Toyota service program, the truck was inspected last in October 2013, and passed the corrosion test. At that point the truck had 106,000 miles. I had purchased the truck afterwards, based on this inspection being done by Toyota and passing. The truck now has 119,000 miles on it, and it is not safe to drive. I called Toyota corporate and they stated that since the truck is now outside the 15-year coverage period, I have no options. I shared that the truck was inspected by them and that it is nearly impossible for a truck to go from no rust issue to significant rust issue in less than 2 years and less than 14,000 miles. She (phyllis) agreed with me and said that she would be frustrated also and that it makes sense that this shouldn't have happened, but it is now outside of the period so I have no options.

12 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2013

While breaking slowly coming to a stop , I lost my all my break controls. Fortunately I was able to stop the vehicle with no fatalities. The tow truck brought me to my mechanics facility and indicated that the trucks steel frame and parts receded backwards placing pressure on break lines under truck to snap. He showed me that rusting of the frame caused the problem. The carriage moved back by 4" due to rusting and deteriation. I called Tacoma customer service and thay said nothing can be done to help pay for my expenses. It's costing me $1,750 to replace frame and repair damages to breaks and other components.

15 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2011

The contact submitted an email and requested that the official ivoq be written verbatim to his submitted email: several weeks ago, I received a letter from Toyota USA stating their service campaign on Tacoma's frames rusting in specific cold climates. I followed the instructions and contacted a-1 Toyota in new haven, CT where they inspected my truck. The service manager told me that the frame literally sagged at the rust penetration points while on the lift. They gave me a loaner car the next day and said they will contact me regarding purchasing the truck back because the frame rust was so bad. Another couple of days passed and I received a phone call from the company (isg) handling the program. They informed me that after they ran a carfax and saw a salvage title in the past, that they will not honor the service campaign for my truck. I bought this truck on 6/12/07 and put a lot of money into her. Now for the really bizarre part. . . . . . In Jan of 2010, I was following a local fellow (who was injured in a motorcycle accident years ago) on his 3-wheeled bike so he could repair a flat tire. I had my flashers and headlights on and going aprox 5mph. I was trying to protect him as he rode along the side of the road (aprox 9:00 am). I looked into my rearview mirror and noticed a Volvo xc-90 coming up behind me fast. The speed limit was 30mph and he was easily doing 50. He rear-ended me and pushed my truck up next to where the fellow was on his bike. The other driver was cited for the accident. If I was not in my truck, but a sedan he would have caused serious injury, but he actually rode up under my truck. The insurance company totalled it and I bought it back and had it repaired. A second-hand bed, some body work, exhaust items and bumper was all she needed. I had to have it flat-bedded to CT dmv for a full safety inspection and to the dealer for air-bag recertification before I could even re-register it. The title now states "rebuilt title only" on it. Updated 06/0611.

1999 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 pickup - frame rail rust.

17 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2010

Recently spoke with several Toyota Tacoma owners who related frame rust problem. Checked truck and found rust on frame(fingers went through frame in spots. Took vehicle to Toyota service and was told not to drive truck due to excessive rust on frame. Then they returned the truck to me to drive home?? to return in two days when they would have a loaner truck for me. Returned truck to Toyota and after a huge hassle they arranged to rental vehicle for me to drive. Now Toyota dealer has kept the truck because it is unsafe to drive. I am waiting for someone from Toyota to contact me - have been told I qualify for a buyout. The dealer/service dept. Has now washed their hands of the problem, telling me I have to wait for Toyota to contact me but have no idea how long it will take - weeks maybe. In addition, I was not planning to buy a new vehicle - didn't want the expense but may not have a choice.

18 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2010

I have received a letter from Toyota motor CO. Along with 814,000 other owners of Toyota Tacoma's built between 1995-2000 stating that our frame rust warranty has been extended for 15 years from date of original purchase as a result of a frame rust because a process that was not done by the frame supplier to Toyota. If frame is found to have rust Toyota motor CO. Will buyback vehicle at 150% of highest kbb retail value. Toyota expects to buyback approx. 50% of vehicles still on the road. Most of these vehicles will be from the central and northeastern parts of the us but they have bought back vehicles in all parts of the nation including California. This campaign began in mid-2008. So now I have a vehicle that has some surface rust on the frame but not enough to warrant the buyback program at this time but in the mean time while the frame rusts into the Toyota buyback standards my kbb value decreases, I drive around a vehicle with compromised frame integrity in the event of an accident, and no one wants to buy my vehicle because it has this latent problem now well established/distributed throughout the media.

19 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2010

This is and addendum to odi number 10299896. Please check consumeraffairs. Com there are literally hundreds of Toyota owners that have had their rusted truck frames inspected by a Toyota dealer, with no results, and they filed complaints on consumeraffairs. Com. With exact same rusted frame rust problems, quite a few with salvage titles, and many with trucks 2001 thru 2007, which Toyota has abandoned. All potential road hazards at some point. Owners are completely at a loss how to have Toyota address the problem, I actually found NHTSA on the consumeraffairs. Com site, most have not. One owner had his truck inspected at Toyota dealer, was told it was the worst case they had ever reviewed, but due to salvaged title, replacement was denied, owner was driving truck approx 2 weeks later and frame broke completely in two while driving down highway??????.

Vehicle (1999 Toyota Tacoma) frame rusted out. Forward hanger of driver's side rear leaf spring separated from frame. Left rear wheel about 2" aft of correct position. Frame failed while driving through "fuel moat" at truck stop. Truck swayed badly after hitting bumps at highway speeds. Problem with truck was not identified immediately as I was towing a boat trailer and suspected trailer problem. Frame problem discovered two days later and vehicle was parked. Truck returned to Toyota dealer on 5/8/08 for buyback under rust perforation warranty extension.

22 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2008

Corroded frame rails on a 1999 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 with xtracab. Purchased used from the original owner in 2000 with 40k miles. My local mechanic told me that he noticed a small rust hole in the frame on the drivers side approximately 1 months ago. The most severe location of the rot was just in front of the rear leaf springs on the bottom of the frame. The mechanic suggested that I get the frame replaced for $5000. He would not give me an inspection sticker because the truck was unsafe to drive.

24 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2008

160k miles my truck frame, in the rear around the leaf springs and back completely rusted out. I had this truck on a lift 1. 5 years ago and inspected it with a mechanic and it was fine. This frame rust happened very quickly. The truck is unsafe to drive now. Only choice is to part it out or junkyard. Getting someone to weld the frame is near impossible. Truck is fine shape otherwise.

25 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2007

I have a 1999 Toyota Tacoma sr5 v6 with 127,000 miles. I was getting ready to go to town when a relative noticed that my bed and cab were laying right against each other. I check the issue and found that my frame rails were both cracked almost all the way through. I just purchased this truck around July 1, 2007 with a new inspection sticker on it. I checked everything before I bought it and it looked decent, but shortly after the purchased large chunked of rust started to fall off when banging on the frame. Now the frame is so thin that any when you bang on the frame it goes through. I have only put 13,000 miles since I bought it all of which are highway miles driving to and from work and/or school. I was told by the local body shop that the only way to fix the rusty frame issue was to change the whole frame at the price of $6000. They said that the frame was beyond repair and there wasn't anything good enough to weld to.

26 Frame Rust problem

27 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2007

I was informed in sept. 2007 that my truck probably will not pass inspection in 2008 due to excessive rust on my trucks frame. The truck is only eight years old. Doesn't this constitute premature frame deterioration? the inspectors suggested that I have someone weld steel onto the frame. It was recommended that I do this before this winter so it is not exposed to any more salt from the roads.

28 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2007

My husband and I have always been big fans of Toyota's. They seem to last a long time, and since we knew we would be footing the bill to send our youngest to a private college in 2002, we decided that we would trade our 1991 Toyota 4 runner in for a brand new Toyota 1999 Tacoma, in July 1999. We thought that this would ensure that we would have a vehicle that we could put a couple of hundred thousand miles on and one that would last for 15 years easy. That all changed less than 8 years later, when we hadn't even hit the 150,000 mile mark. All of the mileage on our previous Toyota pickups had turned over twice, but one day while my husband was on his way to work, he hit a bump and heard a huge bang. The bed had slammed up against the cab. When he got out to look, he was surprised to see a big crack and the frame so rusted that he could put his finger right through it in several places. I was never so surprised when he called me at work to say that we needed to trade his truck in for a new one. He told me, "this frame is going to just drop on the road and it's not safe for me to drive, it looks like swiss cheese. I just hope I can make it to the dealership to trade it in before it goes. " I was floored. This seemed to come out of the blue, since I knew we took care of it, did oil changes every 3,000 miles and kept up with all of the maintenance that should have made this last twice as long as it did. Just like all the other Toyota pick ups we had owned over years, some of which we had purchased with more miles on them than this one had now. We traded it in for peanuts, because of the rust.

34 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2006

I purchased the vehicle from blaise alexander family dealership on October 19 2005. I bought it with 80k miles on it. I paid roughly 13,500. 00 for it. My local mechanic told me that he noticed a small rust hole in the frame on the drivers side approximately 5 months ago. Well a few months later I had noticed a huge hole had appeared in the area of the left rear shackle. Since it was a major safety issue I took it to a local weld shop. He agreed to try and fix it. Upon removing the box, the gas tank he noticed he had opened a major can of worms. Both sides of the trucks frame were shot from the front of the cab to the back bumper. He immediately called me with this problem. Since this was more than I could handle I then took it back to the dealership where I had bought it on October 17 2006 and showed them pictures of the truck they had just sold me less than a year ago. The general manager john panko said himself that this vehicle is not road worthy. Well a long story short. . . Toyota corp was called in to inspect this vehicle and offered to give me $2000. 00 to fix it. A service manager said it would cost about $6000. 00 to fix. Well needles to say I am not paying another 4k on a vehicle that I already owe $11,500. 00 on. I have no warranty left to date on this vehicle, and even if I did, the frame would not be covered. The alexander dealership would not give me a loaner car, or help me in any way shape or form. They have given me the run around long enough. I have contacted a lawyer and plan on filing a complaint with the attorney general for pennsylvania. Also the dealership never gave me anything in writing from Toyota saying they agreed to pay. How do I even know if an inspector came out or not. Alexanders could be saying this to shut me up. Another problem I noticed that many others have is a shimmy in the front end. I also had 2 sets of new tires put on in the same week. Can somebody please help me?.

35 Frame Rust problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2003

Toyota rust recall. Truck purchased in 2003 and undercoated . Maxon phillips received recall, took it in, nothing was done. John phillips, son bought truck in 2008 went to l& s Toyota regarding rust, nothing was done. Frame has rusted so bad that it punctured hole in fuel tank; otherwise, truck in excellent condition. Too dangerous to drive. In 2008 Toyotas frame rust was so bad on 1995-2004 Tacomas (about 800,000 trucks) was so bad the company had to buy many of them back, conduct extensive frame repairs and/or extend frame corrosion warranties by 15 years. Company never issued a recall for that problem. We would appreciate getting our frame and fuel tank fixed. It has sentimental value to my husband since it was his dad's truck and he is deceased, and besides, it is a great truck and looks great!.
