As I applied the brakes upon approaching a red light, the vehicle failed to slow down in a normal manner, even when I applied more pressure. I put the gear selector into neutral and the brakes stopped the vehicle. The engine, however, sped up for another few seconds before it suddenly dropped to idle speed. I have not yet had a recurrence of this dangerous incident.
