Bought my 08'Toyota Tacoma used 10/21/19. Not knowing about the rust problem these seemed to have. It had 174000 miles on it, and so far I am first having to get a new oil pan, (rust hole) it is about a 7+ hour job because the cross member can not be removed . Cost will be about $800. 00, while waiting for that to happen the rear axle (differential) started to leak. Another rust hole. . . The differential is one piece, no removable cover. Now I'm in for a used one and add labor it will be some around $1200. 00 to $1500. 00 to fix. . . What gives, this is way over the top for a 11 year old truck! I got rid of my 2000 Ford ranger with when I bough it it had 200,000 miles on it. At 206,000 when I got rid of it, no leaks anywhere, the body was rusted out but this NY. This should have been a recall problem long ago and I asking why it wasn't. Is there anything I can do on my end to get some help with this major cost. I am 74 years old and on ss. My e-mail is gspina@rochester. Rr. Com.
Part inside differential broke and punched hole in differential case. Differential could have locked up at high speed. I was lucky to discover that oil was leaking from the differential before an accident happened. Truck had less than 18,000 miles on odometer.
Rear differential whines/roars at speeds 50-70 which indicates there is a failed component within. Toyota issued technical service bulletin t-sb-0076-08 for problem. Dealer, john royberts Toyota of manchester, TN, attempted to repair but could not. Now, says all Tacomas have whine/howl, a normal condition. If this is true, then ever Tacoma has a potential problem of differential lockup while driving which could cause deadly accidents.
The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Tacoma. While driving 55 mph the rear differential locked and the vehicle veered to the left and crashed into a ditch. During the crash the left rear wheel came off along with the axle and brakes. The contact was dazed from the crash and passerby notified 911. The contact sustained injuries to the entire right side of his body and was taken to the hospital. The contact stated that the air bags did not deploy. The dealer was informed of the crash and advised the contact that a representative would inspect the vehicle to determine if the damage was covered by the warranty. The inspection has not determined if the vehicle was destroyed or not. The failure mileage was 16,700.
