1 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2017

I started my Tacoma in park, with my foot on the brake I put it into reverse, the engine and then started to accelerate very fast, spinning the tires, it was on asphalt with some sand. I pressed down harder on the brake to keep it in place and shifted back to park, at which point the engine rpms went back to idle. When I returned to reverse everything was behaving normally. The truck had been in my heated garage for a week, I drove it 3-4 miles in dry sunny cold weather(32), shut if off for a few minutes before this happened. In the five years I have owned the truck this is the second time something like this happened. The last time was a couple of years ago while in dive it suddenly accelerated. Both cases were quite alarming but fortunately did not result in an accident. The prior incident was reported to Toyota and NHTSA.

2 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 06/28/2016

The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Tacoma. While driving 2 mph, the contact pulled the vehicle into a parking space and suddenly accelerated approximately 18 feet before crashing into a tree. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was not filed. There were two injuries that required medical attention. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number: 13v014000 (air bags, seats). The VIN was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 63,000. The manufacturer was not notified.

3 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2015

I am writing about a sudden acceleration problem I had with my 2011 4x4 Tacoma. On January 6th, I was returning from an appointment. I left the parking lot going about 10-20mph, I drove 1/10th of a mile down the access road when I went to brake at the intersection. As soon as I touched the brake the engine dramatically increased its speed and the truck started to accelerate. I immediately applied full pressure to the brake to stop the truck but the engine was still highly rev'd and I could feel the truck trying to accelerate. As soon as I shifted the transmission into neutral the engine revs went back to normal idle speed and the truck stopped trying to move forward. Other details are that the outside temperature was between 10-20f, roads were clear and dry and the truck was in 2wd. After I checked the accelerator pedal, it was free and clear of any obstruction that could have made it stick. The truck was purchased new in oct 2011 and currently had about 24k miles on it. The truck had been driven about 5 miles to the appointment, sat for about an hour before the return trip home. It was fortunate that this did not cause an accident. Being aware of the prior sudden acceleration problems in the news with Toyotas this seems to be a case where it has occurred on a 2011 model. The following week I submitted this same information to Toyota.

4 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2011

Sudden unintended acceleration. Time was 6:55 am. I was on work property having just turned left from a light. I was 5 th car in line to make a right turn. All cars were stopped. My foot was lightly pressing break. The next thing I know, my truck was ramming the SUV in front of me. No way my foot could have touched gas pedal. . . It was a traffic jam. It's like this every morning. I contacted Toyota right away. They denied it, but sent out an eng to get black box data. I never heard from them again.

5 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 03/29/2011

I experienced sudden unintended acceleration in my 2005 Tacoma pickup while parking. I was turning left into a parking spot and applying the brake when the Tacoma suddenly accelerated jumping the parking curve. I stopped the vehicle by applying heavy pressure on the brake pedal and throwing the automatic drive into neutral and then park. I checked to see if I could have been stepping on the accelerator by mistake but the loud rubber screeching of the tires were a sure indication that my brakes were being applied as the car surged forward. Also I inspected the floor mat (which had already been inspected by Toyota) and saw that there was no interference with the accelerator. I immediately brought the car to the dealership but they just referred me to Toyota USA via a phone number. I have called Toyota USA and reported the incidence. I definitely believe there is a defect in this car and this needs to be address. This is dangerous. This is not the first time this has occurred. In 2006 I went to the dealership and asked if there was a recall or service bulletin regarding this problem. They said there was none at that time. I regret not pursuing it further because it appears that Toyota has done little to remedy the situation. Thank you.
