3 Parking Brake problem of the 1996 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 07/07/2010

I own a 1996 Toyota Tacoma which has a recall for rust. The entire undercarriage is rusting out. I took it to my local Toyota dealer for examination because my mechanic said it was in bad shape. The dealer said it was ok. A little while later the emergency brake mechanism on the bottom rusted out and broke. Luckily it happened in my driveway so there was no accident or damage. The truck just rolled to a halt. If this happened on a hill or in a parking lot someone could have been injured.

4 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 06/15/2010

Emergency brake failure, the emergency brake on my 2001 Toyota Tacoma has seized for a second time. With the emergency brake seized it is not possible to operate the emergency brake. The design of the emergency braking system allows the system to seize due to corrosion at the location where the actuating lever meets the mounting block. I have previously had this repaired by the Toyota dealer at a cost of $350 (2 mounting blocks@ $90. 00 each and 1 hour labor per side to remove and replace mounting blocks and actuating lever(s). The protective rubber boot which should protect the joint between the lever and mounting block is located approx 1/8" from the joint, which provides no meaningful protection from water and salt I. E. Corrosion. Once a small amount of corrosion occurs the joint seizes and renders the emergency brake unusable.

5 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 12/28/2009

Gas tank shield severely rusted. Under side of gastank is protected by a shield/skid plate. It is rusted so badly that when hit with a hammer the hammer goes right through. Presumably this shield is to protect the gas tank from debris and stones especially if the truck is used off road. I discovered this as I was inspecting the underside of the truck before dropping the truck off at the dealer to have the frame replaced. In addition to this, it is apparent that the drive axle and differential housing also have severe rust. If tapped with a hammer the rust comes of in sheets. The parking brakes actuating levers have rusted in place and can no longer be used. There appears to be more to this rust than simple frame rust. The rust is pervasive through out the underside of the truck.

6 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 07/10/2009

My 2001 Toyota Tacoma has dealer verified frame rust perforation. When the first letter from Toyota came to my door in early 2009 I went directly to my local dealer who did not know anything about this issue and stated to me that they would get back to me with more information as it became available to them. Several months later, I was told by the dealer that wisconsin was asking Toyota to provide more data on the propose solutions to this issue and had not approved Toyota to make any repairs. I was also told that they would contact me when I could get my truck inspected. Many more months passed and finally I had enough and called Toyota direct. I was assigned a case manager and she said she would help me get my truck inspected. This finally happened on April 27, 2010. Now they tell my only option is a replacement frame, which to me is not acceptable. Then lucky 2001 owners who were able to get quick inspections were offered the buy back option. In various forums the ones with the replacement frames are seeing issues with leaking gas tanks, and up charges for incidental items.

7 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 06/15/2009

Emergency cable is broken.

8 Parking Brake problem of the 2003 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 06/01/2009

I have a 2003 Toyota Tacoma and the parking brake remains on and the parking brake does not work. I will take it to the dealership to hopefully fix the problem but I don't think I should have to pay to fix the faulty parking brake. This is safety equipment and should be the responsibility of Toyota to fix. I noticed that there have been several other complaints about the same faulty item. One faulty parking brake is one too many. All vehicles should be equipment with a functioning parking brake.

10 Parking Brake problem of the 2003 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 08/20/2007

I have a 2003 Toyota Tacoma 4 wheel drive truck with 26,560 miles. There is a continuous failure in the parking brake (previously called emergency brake). Apparently, the parking brake design is such that it "freezes up" giving an indication on the dash with the "brake light" illuminated. The brake is not engaged and thereby gives a false reading that the brake is engaged. However, as a real problem occurs the drivers are lulled into a false security that the only problem is that a warning brake light is lit. When a real problem occurs with the brakes, including the ordinary brake system, there can be a more serious safety problem such as causing the rear brake shoes to lock onto the rear drums. . 11 Parking Brake problem of the 2003 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 10/13/2006

2003 Toyota Tacoma parking brake is not working properly. When the parking brake was released, the brake did not completely disengage and could be heard dragging until it kicked off. Occasionally it refused to release and required re-application before finally releasing. When the parking brake was applied, it did not always hold the vehicle even on a modest slope such as the consumers driveway.

12 Parking Brake problem of the 2003 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 09/01/2006

: the contact stated the vehicle's parking brake cable snapped. Also, the pin froze causing the cable to snap when trying to apply the parking brake. The service dealer determined the pins needed to be replaced, and the new pins would continue to freeze again and would continuously need to be replaced.

13 Parking Brake problem of the 2004 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 07/02/2004

It's the 5th Tacoma I've owned. The parking brake lever in each of the other trucks always came out 4 inches from the dash. The "on" light came on when at the 3" mark. This new truck comes out 11. 5 inches, hits me in the knee, making it almost impossible to get in and out, almost collides with the stick shift when its in 1st gear. The "on" light comes on before its pulled a quarter of an inch. The manual directs the operator, when in stopped on an incline, not to use the clutch to hold the car but rather place the car in nuetral and use the parking brake. After 26 hours owning the car, it rolled down my driveway. At the time, the car was in nuetral with the brake on to the extent all my other ( 4) Tacomas would have been. The "on" light was on. I jumped out of the car for just a second and it rolled away. The insurance man renacted the incident . He agreed something wasn't right. As the car began to roll down the driveway, he got behind it and began trying to stop it. I was able to jump in and stop it. Fortunately no one was hurt. Before I approach Toyota, I wanted his report detailing how the brake failed. I've yet to see it. I 'm not comfortable approaching the dealer, nor Toyota, without some authoritative backing. The brake needs to be fixed. The bumper and slight body damage needs to be repaired . I was never "walked through" it at the dealer. Nor do I have anything that says the pre-delivery inspection was performed. I don't know if the dealer is mandated to walk one through the car or what if any, inspection is supposed to be performed and documented for the customer. What is in place to ensure a new car is not unsafe? I would really appreciate any response you may deem appropriate. I have e-mailed the Toyota web site twice in an attempt to gather some informationabout the very questions I raise here. They do not appear to be responding. Thanks again, I look forward to hearing from you.
