36 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 08/24/2013

While driving the spare tire fell off of the truck due to a badly rusted spare tire wench, as I looked under the truck to see if their was any other damage I noticed a lot of rust on the frame. Most notably around the suspension.

37 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

Massive generalized rust under vehicle. This is affecting the frame, suspension, all lines, exhaust, all metal fittings, wheels, brakes, spare tire. My mechanic does not know how to proceed and suggested we no longer drive this vehicle. Toyota dealer said this is not included in the rust recall which is in effect for Tundra trucks exactly like this one , but off by a couple months by manufacturing date. Our Toyota dealer did not have a suggestion or answer for how to fix this, other than to ask if we were interested in buying a new car. We bought this truck new and have taken excellent care of it. The inside and upper body looks new.

38 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

Brought my truck in for an oil change. I was called at work by my garage, they told me the truck was unsafe to drive due to several holes and cracks in the frame due to severe rust. I brought the truck to the dealer I purchased it from and they agreed that the truck was not drivable. Toyota has said the 04 model is not part of the recall, and I appear to be in limbo. It has been 3 weeks and this issue is still unresolved. The only certainty is that the truck will need many new frame components for it to be road worthy again.

39 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2013

Frame is badly rusted in many areas including where suspension and brake components mount. I am concerned a major failure could lead to injury to myself or a member of my family. I understand ther was a recall for 2000-2003 Tundras for the same issue but my 2004 was not included in the recall.

40 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2013

Brought vehicle in for new muffler and tailpipe. Mechanic showed me a leaky rear seal because the metal cover was rusting through. Also showed me main frame and suspension points which are , in his words, "like rust holding hands".

41 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2013

6/13/13 vehicle did not pass inspection major frame perforation Toyota performed limited frame replacement at their cost after much discussion . Not all severely rusted parts were replaced only the major assembly mounting piece items that were disassembled and couldn't be reused were replaced. No sub pieces of the major assembly were replaced. If the were rusted they were reinstalled. 8/4/14 vehicle did not pass inspection major rust failure deformation and leaking of steering rack housing that was severely rusted and not replaced when frame was replaced. Rack was replaced by owner at owners expense. 4/15/15 rear differential housing rust thru and housing failure. Housing was severely corroded when frame was replaced. Owner was informed it was not part of the frame replacement . Toyota does not have any recall bulletin issued despite the numerous complaints found on the internet. Replacement will be at owners expense. Brake backing plates and axle mounting hardware that were severely corroded when frame was replaced are not salvageable and will require replacement as well in order to replace the rear axle housing.

42 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 05/25/2013

2004 Toyota Tundra worse than 2003 for metal fatigue. Front of rear differential is flaking apart. Tension adjuster for emergency brake is disintegrating. Adjustment bolts are seized. Spare tire attachment is flaking apart. Please help.

43 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 05/25/2013

Rear differential and brake housing left and right are rotting from the outside. Large parts of the differential housing are already missing! front transfer case and transmission are perfect! entire rear trans-axle is rotting from the outside. Emergency brake adjustment turnbuckle is rotting. *structural mounts for the emergency brake are rotted. Steel in the frame and most factory welds are DE-laminating. *brackets holding the brake line and junctions are rotting. *capture plate and hardware holding spare tire in place are rotted. I will need a cutting torch to remove the spare tire. I have excellent photos to send. Respectfully, dennis degen.

44 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 05/18/2013

2004 Toyota Tundra taken in for service on 05/18/13. Well cared for vehicle and serviced faithfully at every interval. Told by service manager that the frame has a hole in it. This is a known problem by Toyota. Frame is very rusty and was part of a problem Toyota had with a bad batch of metal used for frames. Service manager could offer no relief for this problem and referred me to Toyota customer care. Customer care complaint number 1305200622. Customer care advised they could do nothing about this and basically have a nice day. Service manager advised that I should be careful when going over bumps. What should be a 14 to 16 thousand dollar vehicle is now worth nothing. Shame on Toyota for selling faulty and unsafe equipment. Accident waiting to happen.

47 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 12/07/2012

Catalytic converter failed at 55,023 miles and was replaced under warranty. The same catalytic converter failed again at 110,000 miles and when I went to a dealer was told that it wasn't under warranty and that I would have to pay $1200. 00 for the part alone and labor would be extra. I also told the dealer that the high rear brake light housing was melting from the heat of the lights. They did nothing. The frame is rusting badly and is becoming a safety hazard. I called Toyota customer service and they said there was no recall for any of these items and there was nothing they could do. "adaptive equipment" is listed as a choice under "affected parts". How about explaining exactly what is the definition of "adaptive equipment"?.

48 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2012

At the service center I was advised that my truck had extensive frame rust. I contact local Toyota dealership (wappingers dch) and service manager said it is know problem with this generation Tundra. Toyota currently buying back 2000-2003, but my 2004 was not yet included. He advised that I wait to hear back. Contact Toyota and was told maybe, but I needed to wait. I was also told that there was an inspection recall and frame repair option for this, but they did not have me on file as owner, so I was not contacted. I have owned this truck for 4 years and serviced it at a registered Toyota dealer. They were not able to answer what happened and recommended that I wait. Now I can't pass inspection or drive my truck and I'm stuck. Please advise.

49 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2012

My vehicle needs an alignment. I was told by the Toyota dealership that the frame on my vehicle is rusted and needs to be replaced. Toyota Tundras do have a recall for the rusted frame but my vehicle isn't part of this recall since its 3 months newer. I was told by the Toyota service rep at the dealership that my vehicle is unsafe to drive. I contacted Toyota and they claim that they cannot do anything about this.

55 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2012

My 2004 Toyota Tundra limited, purchased in 2004 directly from Toyota dealership for 39000 dollars has an extremely rusty frame. The steel peels away in layers at the welds. The proliferation can be described as "layers of a biscuit flaking a part. " the dealership pounded on the frame with a tool and said that it did not fail the "Toyota frame tool" test and since the vehicle is a 2004 they would not do anything about it until it fails or becomes part of a recall. I haul a travel trailer with my family and I feel that it is extremely unsafe. How can a 7. 8 year old truck rot out this quickly? there has a to be an issue here that Toyota is not willing to acknowledge. Please advise.

The vehicle skidded to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 05v225000 (suspension), 07v013000 (suspension) and 22e002000 (suspension); however, the VIN was not included. Failure Date: 08/29/2011

After a scheduled oil change the mechanic suggested I take my truck to a Toyota dealer to check out the undercarriage rust. When to massey Toyota, white oak, PA . They said I need to deal with it but it would cost several hundreds of dollars because Toyota doesn't have a recall on 2004. I've talked to other Tundra owner with the same problems. When is Toyota going to acknowledge this manufacturing problem as you did previous models? I currently own two Toyota's: Tundra and camry.

Toyota has issued recall notice ssc 70b for the Tundra. I called several times attempting to schedule to have recall repairs performed. The response was that Toyota had large back log and the parts were not available. The response was the same from Toyota corporate. It will be weeks if not months until the parts will be available. In the mean time I must drive a vehicle with potentially defective parts.

64 Suspension problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2004

Original owners of a 2004 Tundra double cab 4wd, purchased new. Within 3 years, the wheels began to corrode. Report wheel corrosion to Toyota, they reply nothing they can do. In 2007, with 25k miles, truck was recalled and had ball jt replaced. At 60k miles, parking brake mechanism was frozen (corroded) at the rear wheels. At approximately 90k miles, front suspension left side vertical link fractured. Replaced link on both sides, and right side had deteriorated and failure was imminent. Wheel backing plates on all 4 wheels began corroding. Rear bumper and support brackets began to corrode at 90k miles. November of 2014, vehicle is recalled for inspection of frame. Toyota determines it did not need replacing, and spray some type of coating on the frame. In October of 2019, at 140k miles, one of the two fuel tank straps fails due to corrosion, fuel tank suspended by one strap until discovered. July of 2020, discover rear axle differential cover leaking due to severe corrosion of the axle metal. Attempt to trade in vehicle at Toyota in oct of 2020, and they provide a value less than book value due to corrosion, and state they are taking a risk as the vehicle may not pass inspection. Call Toyota customer service to ask for assistance or discount to purchase a new truck, as we had no intention of selling the truck we have cared for for 16 yrs, with only 150k miles, and now with a bad axle must buy another truck ASAP in 2020. The truck was not a daily driver, was not driven for a work commute. It is an extra vehicle, our "new" dependable vehicle for family trips, vacations, college, etc. . , and the condition and care is obvious in the photos. I would not expect Toyota to buy back the vehicle, but some assistance could be provided to the owners forced to purchase another truck prematurely. Our truck never trailered or launched a boat. Rarely driven in snow.
