1 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2023

Intermittent failure of the integrated trailer brake controller system. System indicates a frequent intermittent fault indicating a wiring or connection issue that disables the signal to activate the trailer brakes resulting in no trailer braking. Vehicle and trailer are available for inspection. I was travelling down a 6% grade mountain (arizona sr87 mp224) an exhibited a loss of trailer brakes. Taking the trailer to the dealer on flat level service experienced intermittent loss of trailer brakes. Toyota integrated brake controller (ibc) intermittently and randomly indicating a fault in the trailer wiring. •rapid clicking of the ibc’s electrical relays. •in fault mode, the ibc disables the trailer brakes. •sometimes the ibc works perfectly for miles and then goes into fault mode for an unknown reason. •sometimes, the ibc goes into fault mode just plugging the trailer into the electrical socket without even taking the truck out of drive or depressing the brake pedal. •all external trailer lights include turn signals are functioning normally. Examination and diagnosis to date: •Toyota ibc was removed and replaced with a tekonsha p3 brake controller using a tekonsha wiring harness adapter to plug directly into the Tundra’s wiring harness used by the original Toyota ibc. The p3 is giving the error as brake circuit short-circuit, overload. •the travel trailer is a 2022 jayco 212qbw, dual axle. •I brought the trailer to the dealer I purchased it from to have the brake system checked for faults. I’ve attached a copy of receipt from the dealer service department. In short, they examined the following and concluded the issue was with the Tundra. - the trailer wiring was physically examined with no deficiencies. - trailer connected to the dealer's chevy silverado and driven around town with no faults. Toyota dealership claims they can find no fault with their tester. They would not use my 7-pin tester that also exhibits the same problems.

2 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/30/2021

Integrated brake controller (ibc) not sending sufficient power to electric dual-axle travel trailer brakes producing weak if any braking ability. On the approach to the first red traffic signal, there was zero braking from the trailer requiring full braking from the tow vehicle risking a crash. The ibc is providing no warning or failure indicators to the user. The vehicle and ibc are available for government inspection. The travel trailer in use is a 2022 jayco jay flight slx8 212qbw. While towing a 5,000 pound dual-axle travel trailer for the first time since I purchased the truck brand new from Toyota in 2017, I attempted to setup the ibc. Instructions say to set type, which I set to electric brakes matching the trailer, then adjust the gain up while travelling around 25 miles per hours. When lock up of the trailer brakes occur, reduce the gain slightly to prevent full lock up. At a gain of 10 (10 is the maximum), I could not achieve brake lock up and could only obtain weak trailer braking. The trailer was tested with a different tow vehicle and there were no problems obtaining lock up at mid-range gain. I had Toyota inspect the software updates to the ibc on January 14, 2022 and Toyota advised the ibc is up to date on its software and functioning correctly. The Tundra is out of factory warranty, but since I did not own a travel trailer during the warranty period, there was no way for me to test the ibc before going out of warranty.

3 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2017

Integrated brake controller. TSB t-sb-0231-17 and t-sb-0231-16 performed with negative results. Unable to perform set up of controller according to owners manual. Dealer submitted a drp awaiting Toyota corp. To investigate. Toyota corp. Has no other fix for this controller. Toyota corp. Said ibc works as designed. Ibc will not stop trailer safely.

4 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/04/2017

The onboard intigrated trailer break controller does not work with all electric break trailers. Works on manual trailer break application but not effective enough with vehicle breaks. This is very dangerous. During a panic stop the trailer breaks do not come on like they do with an after market break controller like a tekonsha p3 progressive break controller. This dangerous situation needs to be addressed with a software recall to make the electric break mose more responsive. How many accidents does it take for the ntsb to take action. 5 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/08/2017

On July 8, 2017 we had just purchased a new 2017 Tundra. We tow a 24 ft. Rv trailer and we purchased this vehicle for that reason. One of the features this vehicle has is the integrated brake control system for towing. As we were headed home on state hwy. 42 near coos bay, oregon, I noticed blue smoke coming from the rear of the pickup. I wasn't sure what happened. I stopped as soon as I could and I couldn't locate the cause of the smoke. I later learned there has been many consumer complaints regarding the faultiness of this integrated brake system controller. I want this issue fixed so I can be assured of a safe trip when towing my RV trailer without the fear of having no trailer brakes when I need them or having them lock up for no reason. Thank you.

6 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2017

Trailer brake controller not functioning when brake pedal applied, gain makes no difference in braking. Twice I have had to make an emergency stop and felt no braking from the trailer.

7 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2017

Integrated trailer brake controller doesn't apply adequate voltage to trailer brakes. At 100% gain brakes barely work with an empty trailer. Brakes should lock up at 100% gain. Towing any load is dangerous without trailer brakes. Dealership had no fix or remedies. I haven't had any situations because I know I shouldn't drive it without trailer brakes. I bought a truck to tow my camper, flat trailer and boat. A$47,000 truck should be able to tow.

8 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2017

Integrated brake controller does not operate trailer brakes in relationship to brake pedal pressure. Completely inadequate to use and a serious potential for an accident while towing trailer, camper, etc.

9 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2017

Trailer integrated brake controller (ibc) does not work correctly. Using setting for "electric brakes" on multi display indicator (mdi) will not stop trailer with dual axle disc brakes. Very poor performance with gain turned to max. Work around is to select "electric over hydraulic" on mdi and adjust gain output.
