1 Power Train problem of the 2022 Toyota Venza

Failure Date: 11/16/2025

When I am at a stop, and the traffic opens for me to go, or the light turns green, I press on the accelerator and nothing happens. The car just rolls forward under no power or it just stays still. About 5 seconds after I'm slamming the gas pedal to get me out the lane of oncoming traffic, or holding up a light the car wakes up again and starts going no problem. This has happened multiple times in compromising situations, and it's going to cause an accident. I called the dealer and they said nothing is wrong with it. I have read multiple cases online of this exact issue. So, there is clearly something wrong with the car.

2 Power Train problem of the 2021 Toyota Venza

Failure Date: 11/10/2025

This report covers 2 events for the same problem. The first occurred in the spring of 2025 and I did not document the date or time. The second one occurred on November 10, 2025 @ about 10:15 a. M. (1) last spring my wife was driving the Venza up the street to our residence going a slow rate of speed. As she approached the house, she took her foot off on the gas and coasted toward the left curb so she could back into our driveway. At that point, car suddenly surged forward and accelerated toward the curb. My wife rapidly applied the brake and averted any problem. (2) the second event occurred on November 10, 2025 @ 10:15 a. M. My wife was starting to park at a parking lot in the tanasbourne town center. She was going to back into a parking spot so she drove forward going slightly left. Then, with the car still in drive, the car surged forward. She quickly stepped on the brake and the car stopped abruptly. (she was angling the car and was about ready to stop and put the car in reverse when this happened) again, with her quick response braking, she was able to avert hitting person or thing. As to which component or system failed, there appears to be a random malfunction of sensors or perhaps the cpu. . . Something that is calling for full throttle when the gas petal is not pushed. The safety risk is possible harm to the driver, outside property, or the worse situation would be harm to pedestrians that might be in the way of the car. We have not been able to reproduce the problem. The same maneuvers have been repeated 100's of times without incident. As of this writing, the vehicle is being taken to the Toyota dealer to have the oil changed and at that time they will be asked to do a thorough inspection of the systems that might cause this, check for any recorded malfunctions, etc. To the best of our knowledge, there were no warning lamps or messages that appeared.

3 Power Train problem of the 2021 Toyota Venza

Failure Date: 01/07/2025

Vehicle at operating temperature, running, in gear and at a stop. Making a left turn into traffic. I release the brake and apply the accelerator, the car rolls out into traffic but no power, I press more and more until it is 100% throttle, all the way to the floor. Then after about 5 seconds the vehicle moves forward. Complete loss of response/power for 5 seconds. Thankfully no traffic coming. This happens a second time with the same circumstances, different location. Press the accelerator, no response, sudden loss of all power, then after 5 seconds it responds. This time there is traffic coming to my driver's side at 50 mph, I was trying to press harder but it wouldn't respond. There were no warning lights, mil, sounds or messages. Toyota wants $169. 99/hr plus tax to investigate.

4 Power Train problem of the 2022 Toyota Venza

Failure Date: 09/06/2024

At approximately [xxx] on Friday, [xxx], my wife was slowly pulling into a stripped parking place at museum hill's lower paved paved lot on [xxx], in santa fe, nm that has three levels when the car suddenly bolted up and over the concrete curb and up a short hill where it faced the fronts of two vehicles; the car stopped (possibly due to automatic braking systems) and rolled backwards into a small tree resting off of the pavement on soil, but against the curb. There is front end dislocation of the right fender and the passenger door hits the fender if trying to open it. The right front tire is broken and the alloy wheel is damaged. After a disagreement with a towing company, I backed the car over the curb and onto the pavement where I installed the spare. The car seemed to be ok to drive and my wife drove it home 3 miles away on back streets. The car's event data recorder was inspected by an employee of eaa from denver in Toyota of santa fe's dealership shop on [xxx] and the car driven. Toyota's report from their legal claims analyst said that "pressure was applied to the accelerator pedal prior to the impact. " my wife was going to her regularly scheduled lunch time support shift at the [xxx], was pulling into her regular parking area, and did not press the accelerator to the floor causing this wreck. I believe that the power steering created a negative voltage drop that caused the concurrent calibration of the accelerator electronics to believe that full power was required at that instant. The safety of my wife was at risk, but no other person was nearby and damage to shrubbery was not consequential. This problem has not been confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. However, several papers on the subject have been written by ronald a. Belt, phd of Plymouth, mn, the latest dated 20 July 2024. The only inspection of the vehicle was on [xxx] by Toyota's eea service. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

5 Power Train problem of the 2022 Toyota Venza

Failure Date: 02/04/2024

No acceleration from stop, sudden loss of power. I was stopped, coming out of a parking lot, getting ready to do a right turn onto a main road. I let go of the brake pedal, and when I applied pressure to the gas pedal, there was no acceleration, like the engine was stalled. The car crept forward slightly, but could not accelerate at any measurable speed. After about 3-4 seconds, it finally started accelerating as normal.

6 Power Train problem of the 2022 Toyota Venza

Failure Date: 01/29/2024

When driving in slowed traffic the car would not accelerate for 3-5 seconds. No warning lights appeared. I had slowed to 5mph and upon pressing the gas pedal the car had no response and put me in danger as all traffic around me accelerated and the Venza would not respond to gas pedal. I removed foot from pedal and tried again and after sustained gas pedal for 3 seconds the car slowly resumed movement.

7 Power Train problem of the 2021 Toyota Venza

Failure Date: 10/20/2023

- vehicle was operating as normal. Slowed down to a complete stop as normal. When attempting to accelerate from stop, vehicle had no throttle response and slowly idled into the intersection. Would press pedal down and nothing would happen. About 5 seconds later, vehicle gained throttle response and took off quickly. Unable to duplicate issue at this time, appears to be intermittent. - safety was risked due to inability to take off from a stop and being stuck in the intersection for a brief period of time. - unable to duplicate problem for dealer to confirm. - called the dealer and they stated they needed to do a diagnostic, but it needed to be in a failed state. It is not currently in a failed state. If it was in a failed state, I’m unsure how I would get it to the dealer for inspection as the issue is lack of throttle. - no warning lamps or other symptoms prior to the failure.

8 Power Train problem of the 2009 Toyota Venza

Failure Date: 09/01/2023

I was at a stop sign and I was on an incline and I let the brake go to press the gas and the car started to go backwards and I almost hit the car behind me and and press the gas to go forward. Now anytime I am on an incline during a stop and if I let go the brake the car goes backwards.

9 Power Train problem of the 2021 Toyota Venza

Failure Date: 05/01/2023

When accelerating from a stopped position, the car fails to go forward. This incident has occurred six times and often seems to be at the worst times, such as pulling into a busy road from a stop sign. The car will start to accelerate and stop with no response from the gas pedal for 3-5 seconds. There have almost been a couple of accidents with this vehicle because of this issue. No check engine light or any light at all came on in the car when this incident occurred. This vehicle has been taking to the dealership and the problem has been mentioned to them, however with no codes to read for the obdii they claim there is nothing they can do about it.

10 Power Train problem of the 2022 Toyota Venza

Failure Date: 02/22/2023

On multiple occasions, my 2022 Venza does not accelerate when hitting the gas pedal after coming to a complete stop. I can press the pedal all the way to the ground but it is delayed by 3-5 seconds and just idles slowly into the intersection. This is happening when turning onto streets where you need to accelerate quickly to avoid oncoming traffic on left turns, and to not get rear ended when making right turns. No dash lights come on, the safety system is not engaged, no warning lights. The Venza is less than a year old and has 7k miles. I’ve seen several threads online of this exact issue happening on other 2021+ Venzas. The local Toyota dealer will not inspect without a $175 fee even though it passed the last safety check fully, is under warranty and I’ve provided exact date/time stamps of when this occurs and have dash cam footage showing the conditions and delay in acceleration. Corporate Toyota is unresponsive to emails and calls as well. This is extremely dangerous and is going to cause an accident.

11 Power Train problem of the 2021 Toyota Venza

Failure Date: 02/07/2023

I was at an intersection. Right turn lane, waiting for a green or a hole in traffic to turn right. The light turned green and I lifted up on the brake, turned the wheel to the right, and tried to accelerate into the turn. The car started rolling, and I heard an electric noise (hybrid car), but the car did not accelerate normally. I applied more 'gas' on the pedal, and nothing happened; the car continued to lightly roll. Usually if you press the gas pedal past a point, it will kick in the gas engine with the electric drivetrain, but this did not occur. After approximately 2 seconds, the pedal felt 'normal' and the electric drivetrain accelerated normally. I was ok because traffic had turned green, but if I had tried to find an opening in traffic and turned on the red, after a complete stop, having the acceleration pedal not correctly functioning for 2 seconds would have been highly problematic and not safe at all. No warning light or beeps. The only noise was an odd electrical sound which was 'not' the normal sound that I hear from the electric drivetrain. I have not told the dealership yet, but I will during my next appointment. I did find one other posting online which was the exact same description that I experienced. . Read more...

13 Power Train problem of the 2021 Toyota Venza

While driving, vehicle suddenly lost all engine and electrical power and steering locked up. Fortunately I was stopped at a light at the time. Car restarted after I shifted into park and started in normal manner.

14 Power Train problem of the 2021 Toyota Venza

Failure Date: 03/11/2022

On a trip out of town, after cruising for 3 hours on I-65, the drive power suddenly stopped and stuttered. The announcement screen started flashing a jumble of messages which only added to the hazard. First message was " your feet are on the brake and accelerator. " my feet were on the floor. We were on cruise control. I put on the emergency flashers to warn traffic not to run into us. The highway ran through a water filled swamp with the shoulder too narrow to be safe. I eased off on the power and pulled off the next exit which was a half mile away and coasted to a stop in a parking lot. It appeared to be overheating in the motor drive so we let it cool while locating a dealer. We struggled to get to the dealer, half mile at a time with pauses to cool. Dealer tech found the coolant for motor drive was gone. Said there was a pinhole in the radiator. Said they did not have a replacement. Called all over. No replacement in us. Discovered there was a national back order for this part. A number of these radiators had failed. We were stranded, our trip aborted and 200 miles from home. The tech resorted to a jbweld repair of the radiator & supplied us with 2 gallons of Toyota pink coolant and we made it back home. The local dealer reported the national back order had increased. We have had no further problem until today. Checking under the hood, we found that the motor drive coolant was down near the danger point. We filled it back up and will be checking it daily until it is repaired. This incident brought to light the following engineering deficiencies: no warning of loss of coolant. This is a critical system point of failure which could cause a fatal incident which would be attributed to "loss of control. " false and distracting messages flashed on announcement screen, compounding the danger of sudden total and erratic loss of drive power in highway traffic. The vehicle diagnostic report stated "coolant pump"a" component internal failure. " obviously false also.

15 Power Train problem of the 2021 Toyota Venza

Failure Date: 01/09/2022

While steadily accelerating on a freeway onramp, the vehicle suddenly accelerated, surged and gained speed rapidly without my control. I took action by braking and slowing the vehicle to a safe freeway speed. Thankfully no one in my vehicle was hurt and no other vehicle was near during the incident. There were no warning messages. The first time I experienced this unintended acceleration was the first month when this brand new vehicle was purchased from a local Toyota dealer. I was turning into my driveway from a residential street , the car suddenly accelerated while I was in the middle of turn. I immediately/emergently stopped by stepping on the brake, I could have crashed into the power pole if I did not stop. Because this was a new car, I convinced myself I was unfamiliar with its controls. But since the second occurrence, I am greatly concerned about this random "unintended acceleration". The Toyota Venza had been dropped off at our local Toyota dealer for inspection and hopefully repair.

16 Power Train problem of the 2009 Toyota Venza

Failure Date: 12/11/2020

I put my vehicle in reverse and the brakes seemed to lock, when I put it in drive it continued to back up. No matter what gear I put it in it stayed in reverse. I was blocking a lane at the mall ,u my husband tried to push it while in neutral but he couldn't budge it, it was still in reverse. I think it has a defective transmission, and it only has 40,000 miles on it. Scary and very dangerous situation.

24 Power Train problem of the 2010 Toyota Venza

Failure Date: 05/06/2012

Moved from flat indiana to hilly tennessee. Pulled up to traffic light at the crest of a hill and the light was red. When the light turned green, I moved my foot from the brake to the accelerator, and in the time it took to do that, my vehicle was rolling backwards into the car behind me. There should be a mechanism in place that stops a vehicle from rolling backwards if it is in the 'drive' gear. Thankfully the brakes were working quite well! I have to use both feet when stopping on hills- 1 on the brake and 1 on the accelerator - and 2 hands on the wheel - yikes!.

25 Power Train problem of the 2009 Toyota Venza

Failure Date: 08/09/2010

Brake sticking on 2009 Venza. On 8/9/10 I completed a filing with the administrator of the national hwy traffic safety administration as well as the customer experience center for Toyota regarding my concern with my accelerator sticking. I now think this is more a problem with the braking system than the accelerator. If I press hard on my brake at a stop (whether in reverse or drive) occasionally the accelerator will not engage when I first push on the accelerator. Example: reversed out of the garage . . . Put the car in drive but before I actually press the accelerator first I press down on the brake as I re-position myself in the driver's seat. Then when I press the accelerator to drive forward nothing happens. I must slowly press my foot on the accelerator . . . Once nothing . . . Second time will move forward. It is as if I had to disengage the brakes. In our garage area after I reverse I must turn the car around. At that point I am facing a brick wall. I now am afraid that if the car accelerates out of control I may hit that wall. The distance of 10 feet. Yesterday, I had pressed hard on the brake while sitting at a traffic light. I went to drive and I had no power when I pressed on the accelerator. I lifted my foot a bit and then put it down very slowing a second time. The car moved forward. I recently took the car to a dealer for the recall on the mats. I expressed my concern about the accelerator sticking. They wrote up the mat recall, the engine slippage I have recently noticed in the lower gears, & checked for a ticking noise that I was hearing from the engine. I was told this was a normal sound coming from the fuel injectors. The service rep took me to the car to remove the cover from the top of the engine and I could then hear clearly the injectors clicking. After reading the other engine revving problems I am now worried that the problem I describe will evolve into the fast acceleration which could cause an accident. Next appt. With the dealer 8/19/10.

26 Power Train problem of the 2009 Toyota Venza

Failure Date: 05/05/2010

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) my 2009 Toyota Venza VIN [xxx] , exhibited severe unintended and uncontrolled acceleration at 7:45am on may 5, 2010. The car was running for less than two minutes when I stopped to make a turn from lorain avenue, silver spring MD, onto westbound MD 193 university blvd. I accelerated to enter traffic and the car took over and accelerated to full throttle on its own. The same behavior as if going into cruise control "resume" mode after being in "coast" except that the cruise control was not engaged. I applied the brakes firmly but they did not sufficiently slow the car nor did the accelerator pedal return to idle position. I was able to shift into neutral and guide the car to a safe stop. The engine continued to run at full throttle and the tachometer was well into the red zone, above 6800 rpm. The engine stop button did not stop the motor when pressed per normal operation. Only when I pressed and held the engine stop button down did the motor stop. I place the transmission into park and applied the foot brake. I checked to see if the floor mat was entrapped in the accelerator pedal and it was not. I restarted the car and it again immediately revved to full throttle. I shut the car down and left it (with my children, ages 2 and 6, who had been their second row car seats and were now in tears). After about an hour I returned to the car by myself and started it again. This time it started normally and idled at about 800 rpm. I drove the car to my home two blocks away and parked it. Koons tysons Toyota towed the car to its location at 8610 leesburg pike vienna, va 22182. They have had the car for over 24 hours and failed to follow through on appointed times to call me back with a status report on the vehicle.

27 Power Train problem of the 2009 Toyota Venza

Failure Date: 03/10/2010

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) transmission problems - rapid downshifting & says in drive when it's in sport mode. The first time it happened I was driving down the highway alone and I was going around 60mph in the 3rd lane when the Venza said "d" on the display but then it felt like it shifted into 2nd gear because it went from 60mph to around 20mph with no warning and I had to get it into the emergency lane in the center so I wouldn't get hit after that I took it to right over to greenwich Toyota and they looked at it but found no trouble codes and about a week later I was with my wife [xxx] and I was going down e putnam Ave and it happened with her in the car and this time it went from around 40mph in "d" to around 10mph and it scared her and she just asked to be taken home so the next day I took it to Toyota and left it for about a week and still no trouble codes were found and it's happened a few more times since then with still no trouble codes now I only use it in sport mode where I manually shift it. Well just recently it has had problems in this also where it won't allow me to shift up or down and while it's in "s" it sometimes says it's in "d" and I'm tired of it because these 2 recent times once I showed jay a service advisor and also thomas stein the owner that it showed "d" while it was in sport mode and they've plugged it in and no trouble codes well they saw it with their own eyes, what else can I do. I have taken my 2009 Toyota Venza to greenwich Toyota in greenwich, CT to get it fixed 4 times now and they say they can't fix it because it's not showing any trouble codes. I'm tired and don't know where else to turn. [xxx].

28 Power Train problem of the 2009 Toyota Venza

Failure Date: 02/11/2010

I was driving at 35-40 mph, pulling up to an intersection. I gradually hit brakes to reduce speed, and the car surged forward twice. Both feet slamming on the brake pedal were required to stop the vehicle. It has happened only once, but caused great alarm and poses a potential serious safety problem. This was under light braking initially, with no pressure on the accelerator when the car surged forward. It is unknown whether the accelerator or computer was at issue. Floor mats were not involved.
