1 Side/window Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 05/23/2016

"takata recall" - I live in san antonio, texas which is designated climate zone 2a humid. It has been six months since Toyota sent me a letter informing me of a recall of my car due to the passenger air bag. In the letter, it stated that in a hot, humid climate such as ours, the takata airbag would be expected to begin deteriorating about six years after manufacture and be totally deteriorated by nine years. I didn't get the letter until nine years after purchasing the car. It's like Toyota saying, "guess what, the passenger air bag in your car is likely totally deteriorated now, so we recommend your not carrying any passengers until we get around to replacing your air bag. " I've been driving my wife and other family members around quite often since we've bought the Yaris, and now I'm just finding out it was dangerous for them to be riding as a passenger for the past four years, and especially now. I'm angry and disappointed that it took Toyota so long to inform me of this problem and especially more so when I think I was gambling with my family's safety every time we were using the passenger seat. I want to get my air bag replaced now or find out how I can disable the air bag. I will also accept getting a similar model loaner car with passenger side air bags no older than two years old. The date indicated in the form below is the date of this particular recall being issued.

2 Side/window Air Bag problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2014

I received a safety recall notice regarding the air bags on our Toyota Yaris and took the vehicle in for repair to Toyota of new bern, 5010 highway 70 east, new bern, nc, 252 637 7200. The recall specifed a spiral cable replacement. Subsequently, Toyota of new bern service said they replaced the cable but that another problem prevented them from repairing the driver's side airbag. The cost to repair this defect would run $1,600, I was told. I called corporate Toyota which reiterated that repairs could not be made without payment for repair of a broken wire behind interior trim within the car. I am somewhat at a loss since there is not sign of any damage to interior trim sufficient to break wires behind it. And frankly I have only the word of Toyota that they did indeed replace the spiral cable. The driver side airbag remains inoperative until this issue is resolved, a risk to safety and a detriment to any future sale of the vehicle. .
