On multiple occasions at startup, vehicle made unusual sounds then either stalled shortly after starting or simply wouldn’t start. Vehicle has also stalled multiple times at red lights and stop signs. On these occasions nearly the entire dashboard lit up simultaneously with warning lights across many unrelated systems (“christmas tree” effect), not a single isolated fault, often while on interstate at 70mph. Recurring, not one-time. 1. Electrical/abs: Aug 2025, right front abs wheel speed sensor replaced after dash lights loss + reported dying after startup; dealer couldn’t duplicate stalling. As of Aug 2026, scan shows left front abs sensor faulting (open/short to ground, implausible signal) plus parking brake module fault referencing wheel speed sensor implausibility. Dealer also flagged left rear abs sensor as critical. Numerous low-voltage faults present across modules simultaneously (supply voltage too low, data bus implausible, control module input power low), matching dashboard cascade events. Battery replaced may 2024 after failing load test. 2. Engine: Dec 2024, cylinder 6 injector replaced (complete goodwill, dealer+vw corporate) for cel/air-fuel imbalance. Cel returned next month for same fault; escalated to full cylinder head replacement ($6,054. 95). 3. Steering: dealer inspection Aug 2026 flagged steering rack and pinion as critical ($2,093. 19), req. 4-wheel alignment. Confirmed with NHTSA/vw this vehicle is not subject to steering knuckle recall 21v026000/40q7 — separate, non-recall defect. Requesting NHTSA review this combined pattern of stalling/no-start, cascading electrical faults, and critical steering failure.

The engine stalls randomly while in motion. When this happens, an error gets presented on the dashboard asking the driver to restart it manually. This has occurred when driving forward and backing up. This car was purchased at carmax and serviced through the extended warranty. However, a few weeks later the problem started happening again.

When it is hot out and car is idiling car cuts off. When reverse car stalls. Auto stop/start is off and car request to be restarted manually.

I was driving on a busy road and my car turned off. I had to turn on my hazards and hope no one hit me at 60 mph. I got an epc error on the dashboard and when diagnosed it was a failure with the fuel pump control module. This is massively unsafe for myself and my family. I cannot drive a car that can randomly turn off. According to online forums this is a very common vw issue and needs to be looked into.

2021 Volkswagen Atlas, VIN [xxx], approximately 116,000 miles. Vehicle developed a cylinder failure requiring full cylinder replacement. Following replacement, compression remains abnormally low, specifically on cylinders #4 and #6 (approximately 90 psi). Mechanic diagnosed significant carbon buildup on the piston rings as the cause of the persistent low compression, and confirmed this diagnosis via a wet compression test, in which compression increased when oil was introduced directly into the affected cylinders — indicating worn/compromised piston ring sealing rather than a valve or head gasket issue. Check engine light continues to trigger intermittently. This appears consistent with a known ea888 2. 0t piston ring/carbon buildup defect currently the subject of active class action litigation (xxx) against Volkswagen group of America. Vehicle has also experienced a separate prior failure of the high- and low-pressure fuel pumps and control module (repaired xxx at 77,921 miles, Volkswagen of north nashville). Concerned about ongoing engine performance and reliability, and potential for further damage if underlying cause is not fully resolved. The vehicle has an oil leak in the crankshaft with 70 k miles, dealership states not covered by vw.

Car repeatedly shutting off while driving. Coal canister replaced multiple times but car has continued to shut off even after replacement.

I have an Atlas voltswagon 2021. I have a water pump leak issue with my vehicle. There is a recall warranty for this vehicle from 2014-2021 for this very reason, but my VIN is not underneath this because of the trim package I have. I believe this is ridiculous. My trim package sound not be excluded from this warranty if its a manufactural issue and the make, model and year are within this warrenty. I'm bringing this to your attention because it will cost me $2000 from a voltswagon dealership to fix and other people with my trim package will probably be dealing with this issue.

I was driving on the highway, and went to accelerate and my car went into limp mode in the middle of the highway and I was almost not able to get to the emergency lane due to not being able to accelerate. I took it to the nearest auto mechanic shop, and they informed they could not work on it or diagnose due to it being a Volkswagen. I then took it to the nearest Volkswagen dealership, and they said they have seen a lot of 2020 and newer Volkswagen cars going into limp mode randomly and not starting back up. They also removed the codes and diagnostic issues that were coming up. They said it was a fuel pump issue which they replaced and two days later my car went into limp mode again on the highway for the exact same reason, and my car wont start again. Every mechanic and tow truck driver I have talked to have all said the same thing with Volkswagens especially the newer ones going into limp mode and not starting. This car is not safe and accidents will happen if it is not fixed.

My vehicle has been taken in for the ac 3x now as well as the start stop feature stalling and not working twice. This most recent service repair is for a coolant leake and ac issue resulting in a head gasket needing to be replaced.

Hood release cable has snapped resulting in inability to access critical components on the vehicle or do routine maintenance. After researching, this is a common and know issue for this vehicle.

Vehicle randomly stalls trying to leave from red lights or parking. Engine stumbles and vehicle dies causing many near accidents as you must put vehicle in park and restart.

While I am driving, when I come to a stop or slow down to almost a stop my engine will periodically shut off where I need to put the car in park and turn the car off and then back on. This has happened multiple times but is especially dangerous when I am in stop/go traffic on a major highway and it happens. The check engine light does come on but the mechanics just turn the engine signal off and say there is nothing wrong. After a couple hundred miles the check engine light returns and the problem continues to persist.

Pulling into a parking, backing out of my driveway on to the road, rolling with my foot off the gas preparing to brake the car shut off in gear. It is very dangerous happening when we back out of the driveway on to the road having to shift to park and manually restart the car. It happens with the auto shut off both on and off. This is a big issue that needs resolved before someone gets seriously hurt.

Vw Atlas randomly shuts off when coming to a stop or slowing down. I have to put the car in park and then restart the vehicle. This is incredibly dangerous and scary. We bought a 2021. 5 Volkswagen Atlas that, starting around 15,000 miles, began having computer-related issues that were reported but never truly repaired. Over time, those issues escalated into serious drivability and safety problems. Beginning in mid-2025, the car started driving poorly. It had hesitation, dragging, poor fuel economy, and then began stalling, sometimes at idle and sometimes while driving. At first, repairs like a battery replacement were tried, but they did not fix the problem. In August 2025, the car stalled on the interstate in nashville with flashing epc and check engine lights and would not restart. Our family, including our children, was stranded in an unsafe situation. The car had to be towed, and a fuel pump was replaced. Even after that repair, the stalling and warning lights continued. Later in August, when the car continued to stall, don jacobs Volkswagen told us the problem was a warranty-covered evap (carbon) canister and that repairing it should resolve the issue. It did not. In December 2025, the car stalled again with flashing warnings and was deemed unsafe to drive. It was towed back to don jacobs, where a second fuel pump replacement was performed. In January 2026, the check engine light came on again and the car was returned to the dealership. At that time, we were told the evap canister had been left unattached from prior testing, not from the most recent repair. Since then, the vehicle has continued to drive poorly, with ongoing hesitation and dragging. In total, the vehicle has been in the shop four times, including three visits to the same dealership, and no one has been able to diagnose or permanently repair it. The dealership has told us they cannot proceed unless specific fault codes appear, even though the vehicle continues to malfunction and send diagnostic alerts through the Volkswagen app. Because of the repeated stalling, unresolved repairs, and lack of a clear path to fix the problem, we do not feel the vehicle.

Whenever I slow down at a light or go low speed in a parking lot my vehicle cuts off. This can cause a accident and the dealership said if there is not fault code there is no fix. It cuts off and say start the vehicle manually.

Vehicle was stopped at a traffic light and running. Once the light turned, the vehicle shut off immediately after the accelerator pedal was depressed. Transmission had to be shifted to park to restart the engine. This happened three (3) times at the same light. This is the fourth incident in the last six (6) months.

On many occasions over the past few months have had our car start to die while driving along the road. We have taken to shop, replaced battery, and no one could replicate issue. Just today my family (3 kids and my wife) were driving 35mph when the rpm started to drop randomly. We lost acceleration and while we were turning across traffic the car died. Luckily we rolled across in time to not be t boned. We turn off “auto start stop” each time we get in the car as we were told by mechanic that could be issue after it persisted randomly, we found maybe the battery was the reason, so we replaced that. Now we are one month on a new battery and keep “auto start stop” off, and it happened again today! vw forums point to a vapor canister being the culprit, and now vw has extended the warranty for this issue supposedly. I didn’t know about this at all. Very worried to have my wife and kids in that car I wish this was a recall,.

There is an error with the start-stop feature and it causes my car to stall while driving it. This is very dangerous considering it tells me to put it in park and start the car manually. It's almost caused me multiple accidents.

Engine shut down 4 times in one day. I'd have to put it in park, in the middle of the road, and restart the engine. It seemed to happen at very low speeds. Engine light came on. Took it to a local mechanic who noted the error had to do with a sensor in the grill that allows airflow into the radiator - the sensor was blocked based on the code, but it was not. The thought was perhaps something had been blocking the sensor but whatever was blocking the sensor had naturally fallen off since the mechanic found nothing actually blocking the sensor. Drove around for a few days, no issues. Heading out on vacation - about 4 hours into the drive on the highway, it stalled again, again at lower speeds in traffic. Turned around to go home (no vacation), stalled again 3 more times, all in heavy traffic. It is now at a vw dealership. There is a new code having to do with the charcoal canister but they do not believe this is the issue causing it stall. I've been reading other threads on the Atlas and this issue has been ongoing for years with no real confirmed fix or recall as far as I can tell. How is this not a safety issue; on the highway, stalling out and you have to come to a complete stop, park, restart for the engine to kick back on. Over and over again.

Vehicle idles and dies, dashboard error shows manual restart necessary. This happens at red lights, in carpool, on the interstate if traffic has slowed, potentially a huge hazard for being rear ended. You have to put the car in park and manually restart the vehicle. Vw is inspecting today but has not been able to recreate the issue. Vw forum online has many car owners with the same issue and concerns. Check engine light and auto start/stop errors are almost continuous now. Check engine light came on/off about 4 months ago and would clear and then reappear. I assumed maybe bad gas that needed to burn off, the auto start/stop also had intermittent errors.

I was at a stop sign when I went to pull out from the stop sign the car stalled. I had to put the car in park press the start engine button again in order for the car to restart. This has happened at least 10 times since purchasing the car.

On 3/19/2024 while pulling into my driveway towards my parking garage my car suddenly stalled wiht loss of power and wouldn't accelerate into the garage. The warning lights came on for epc light. The start/stop system keep giving error and shut down the car and give a message " start stop error start manually " this can be dangerous as it happens in traffic or at stop signs and stop lights.

Engine completely stalls while driving, I have to put it in park and restart it. It has happened 5 times in the last 2 months. All at low speeds. Milage 58,000.

Several times while driving the Atlas, the cars engine turn off unexpectedly while in drive. This has also happened while the car was in propulsion. Essentially, the engine kicks off thinking it is in idle. Clearly there is a “start/stop” button issue.

Vehicle stopped in the middle of a busy road after backing out of lot while changing from reverse to drive. It was a very dangerous situation as cars were swerving out of the way to avoid collision. No warning indicators, sounds or lights before nor after incident. Vehicle was inoperable and pushed into an auto shop. They concluded catastrophic engine failure due to lack of compression in cylinders with no observable cause. Had vehicle towed to authorized vw dealer which produced same findings. All services including oil changes were done in accordance with the vw manual schedule.

Brought car in for a noise 12k miles ago and dealer said all was well. I then brought the car back and they heard the sound, wanted to explore and take apart the engine and found I have a collapsed lifter on the exhaust cam which if a defect, should be completely covered by the manufacturer not just a portion of the repair. Also, this could cause further issues and damage with the car which is concerning since it had been going on for some time. I am just looking to see what further resolution can be made in regard to this. My car is still in the shop since last week. The dealership has been great in allowing me to have a loaner vehicle but I just want to make sure I don’t have more major issues form this not being taken care of as soon as it should have been.

Coolant leaks and potential engine overheating. Replaced water pump 6 months ago and have to replace again.

The car stalls and turns off when operating at a slow speed, both in forward or reverse. This is a serious and potentially deadly problem. With my two young children in the car, I was turning left across three lanes of oncoming traffic. When I began to accelerate, my car stalled in the middle of the first lane. I had to figure out what happened, put it in park, restart the car and finish my turn before being hit by oncoming traffic. This has happened 2-3 times each day since this started last week. This has nothing to do with eco mode or automatic start/stop feature. I am familiar with both of those and disengage them when I start the car. The car has approx 28k miles and is well maintained. It is still well within warranty. The check engine light came on and the code it throws is p0496 for a bad evap system. I took it to vw dealer and they re-created and diagnosed the problem. Essentially, the evap system has faulty parts and it is causing the gas tank to collapse. The evap canister, the purge valve and the gas tank all need to be replaced. The problem is they do not have the parts to replace the gas tank. And they have no idea when they are going to get them. Literally, no time horizon. The vw service advisor admitted that they’ve seen ‘some frequency’ with this problem lately, mainly on 2019-2023 models. It’s a parts issue, not a wear & tear nor maintenance issue. If you look this up online, you’ll see hundreds of posts about this issue with similar scary situations like mine. Couple this with the active recall already in place (passenger airbag may not deploy in an accident) and there’s no solution for that recall, either. My family feels in jeopardy every time we drive our family car. Why is there not a recall for the gas tank collapse? how can we compel vw to produce a remedy in a timely manner? this is going to be a fatal issue for some family. Please help. Vehicle shuts off when driving. No faults pop up on the dash until 2 days ago when I was driving on the highway and it completely turned off. Message on the screen told me to manually turn it back on but I could not. The vehicle could not turn back on.

The vehicle would turn off randomly when stopped at a stop sign or traffic light. It the had to be put in park and restarted. The dealership kelly vw in danvers, MA diagnosed the problem and this is what the invoice said. "cel is on code p0461 is active. Performed TSB hooked up battery charger and updated ecm per TSB" si, in my opinion this is at the least a potentially serious safety issue that should have warranted a recall and/or something that would be covered under the 80,000 mile or 8 year federal emissions warranty.
