36 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2025 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 01/27/2026

The contact owns a 2025 Volkswagen Atlas. The contact stated that while driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic, the vehicle stalled. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated, and the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended while depressing the accelerator pedal. The vehicle failed to restart. The contact was unable to move to the side of the road and called the police. The police helped to push the vehicle to the side of the road. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the transmission control module needed to be updated. The transmission control module was updated; however, several weeks later, while the vehicle was at the dealer for a maintenance check, the contact was informed that there was an oil leak. The dealer found engine oil inside the cabin of the vehicle. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 10,000.

37 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2023 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 01/23/2026

While operating my vehicle, the engine shuts off and stalls unexpectedly, including while driving at low speeds. When this occurs, the vehicle loses power and must be manually restarted, creating a dangerous situation, especially in traffic. This issue began within the first year of ownership and has continued despite multiple service visits. Early on, the dealership was unable to diagnose the issue and at times stated the condition was “normal. ” Volkswagen dealerships later identified the issue as related to a defective canister / evap system component. The same component has required multiple repairs, including a repeat failure after the initial repair. Volkswagen issued an extended warranty covering this defect. Despite these repairs, the vehicle continues to shut off and stall, including while driving. The vehicle has also experienced remote start failures with messages instructing the driver to manually start the engine, which a dealership confirmed is related to the same defect. This creates an ongoing safety risk, particularly because I transport children in the vehicle.

39 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2025 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 01/17/2026

I was driving on the road and my car just turned off. The car turned off mid drive. When I tried to turn the car on again, the engine revved and within a few seconds the car turned off again. The dash showed an error message "error: drive system. Please service vehicle. " when the tow truck came, the tow truck driver said he has seen this issue before with vw Atlas cars. He tried to turn the car on again, and the same thing happened. When this happened, I felt extremely unsafe because the car just stopped in the middle of the street and I was unable to turn it back on or get it to move from the middle of the street. Thankfully it was not a busy street and there were no cars behind me. There were no warning messages prior to the failure. The car initially started as usual with no warnings of this problem prior to beginning the drive. The error message only appeared after the car stopped mid drive and before the dash screen shut off. The car was towed to the service center. They acknowledged the problem and have not been able to provide a reason for the malfunction.

42 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 11/17/2025

The vehicle has experienced multiple serious safety failures involving the steering, electrical system, and powertrain. Most recently, while driving, the steering wheel locked unexpectedly, causing a temporary loss of control. Multiple dashboard warning lights began flashing, and the epc light turned on and off repeatedly. I had to bring the vehicle to a complete stop and restart the engine to regain control. The camshaft/camshaft position sensor and steering system appear to be malfunctioning, and the issues have recurred multiple times. The vehicle has been taken to a dealer for inspection and repairs several times, but the failures continue. These problems have created a serious safety risk, as loss of steering and erratic electrical behavior can lead to accidents, putting myself, passengers, and others on the road at risk. Warning lamps first appeared intermittently after prior repairs, but the steering wheel lock incident is the most severe event to date.

43 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 11/10/2025

In July 2022, vw replaced the cylinder head and gaskets of my 2019 vw Atlas due to warped head. The vehicle was brought in for service because the low coolant light was on. The repair was done under warranty. In January 2024, the low coolant light came on again 31k miles after the first repair. We were told it was normal for this vehicle to burn coolant. Service refilled coolant. Since that time customer would refill the coolant when the low coolant light came on which was approximately every 6 months. Customer made appointment to bring in the vehicle because the low coolant seemed to be more frequent with evidence of a coolant leak. On November 6, 2025, service department informed customer that the water pump was bad and needed to be replaced. On November 7, 2025, service department informed customer that they couldn't hold pressure and they had to test the block which would be on November 10, 2025. On November 10, 2025, service department informed customer that coolant was leaking into the head due to warped head.

44 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2023 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 11/08/2025

Engine turns off completely traveling at moderate speeds in drive gear while approaching and then stopped at lights or stop signs. Issue became more constant and prevalaint with time. Message then shows up " please start engine manually p". Vehicle then has to be put in "park" and manually restarted. All this is completed in a panic and a rush as your are on a road with traffic and cars behind you. Randomness and type of stall makes it difficult to document issue live and in it's entirety as it happens. Issue cannot be foreseen. This is a very dangerous situation and a accident waiting to happen. This is a known issue on this model vw commencing in prior year models as documented by thousands online on forums, chats with documented fixes. Such as one being extended warranty "vwp-23-04 on part. Vw dealers visited refuse to address potential causes or related parts as issue cannot be "recreated". Have presented documentation of times and dates this has happened and pictures of dash message but since vehicle "technically" doesn't show a fault, issue is not being addressed by dealers. Vehicle completely shutting off while driving is extremely dangerous for driver and passengers, as well as other drivers.

Failure Date: 11/07/2025

The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen Atlas. The contact stated that while checking fluid levels in the engine compartment, the contact became aware that the coolant reservoir was low. The contact stated that there was no sign of a coolant leak, but coolant needed to be added to the reservoir weekly. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic, who determined that there was a coolant leak that was draining into a protective shield underneath the engine compartment. The contact stated there was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

47 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 11/03/2025

While driving, the vehicle suddenly loses engine power and shuts off without warning. This has happened multiple times and creates a serious safety hazard because it happen in traffic multiple times . The problem appears to be related to the fuel pump control module and/or electrical wiring failure. Additionally, the power windows stopped functioning due to a failure in the driver door wiring harness, which is a known issue on this vehicle model year. The electrical malfunction and engine stall appear to be connected. This issue has been repaired because the dealership stated the warranty is expired, but this is a safety defect that can lead to a crash. There is also an open unrepaired recall on this vehicle. The vehicle is available for inspection.

48 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 11/01/2025

Safety recall issued in November 2025 for the engine cover. The dealership removed the faulty engine cover for safety reasons. Vw customer care informed me that the part is not in production. Under federal recall law, manufacturers must provide a remedy within a "reasonable time". Seven months with no production date for the repair is my complaint. The engine cover is designed to reduce engine noise.

49 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 10/27/2025

October 27th- as my husband was parking at work, the vehicle suddenly refused to shift into any gear—park, reverse, or drive—and defaulted to neutral. The dashboard displayed a warning message: “risk of rolling! p not possible. Please apply parking brake. ” despite multiple attempts, the Atlas could not be shifted or safely parked. After several failed tow attempts, vw roadside assistance successfully towed it to ourisman Volkswagen of laurel. As parents of young children (ages [xxx] , [xxx] , [xxx] , and [xxx] ), this experience was nothing short of terrifying. We drive this vehicle for school drop-offs and daily errands—had this malfunction occurred in traffic or at highway speeds, the outcome could have been catastrophic. We are grateful that no one was harmed, but this incident has left us traumatized and unwilling to transport our children in this vehicle again. This is not merely a mechanical inconvenience—it is a critical safety and reliability failure. A nearly new vehicle should never exhibit such dangerous behavior. For this reason, we are respectfully requesting that Volkswagen initiate a buyback of this 2024 Atlas and allow us to part ways with a vehicle we no longer feel safe operating. 50 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 10/25/2025

I have a coolant leak. The first time presented to the vw service department, I was told it is a known issue and to add coolant if it isn’t a big leak or concern. I have been doing that, but now the leak is an everyday thing. I took it back to the service department and they said I need a new water pump and a belt. I asked about this known issue and they said I don’t qualify to have a recall for this. In researching this, I see because it is a known problem there is an extension of warranty to 8 years and 80,000 miles. My Atlas has 77,000 and I am requesting to have the needed repairs completed under the good will of volks wagen due to this being offered to other owners. Thank you for your consideration.

51 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 10/21/2025

Vehicle: 2022 Volkswagen Atlas 2. 0t (VIN: [xxx] ), current mileage: . Failure: the engine water pump / integrated thermostat housing failed due to a coolant leak. I first noticed coolant odor and dried pink/white residue around the pump area on //. Coolant level dropped between services and I observed active seepage. Dealer diagnosis on // confirmed failed water pump/thermostat module and recommended replacement. Frequency/progression: began as a slow weep that progressed to an active leak. Coolant requires top-offs; leak is visible after parking. Safety risk: sudden coolant loss can cause engine overheating and potential stalling while driving, creating a crash hazard and risk of engine damage. Context: this appears to be the same ea888 2. 0t water-pump/thermostat leak pattern documented across vw/Audi vehicles; vw previously extended coverage to 8 yrs/80k miles for many 2014–2021 models in a settlement, but 2022 Atlas is not listed—leaving similar failures unaddressed. (request odi review for potential broader coverage. ) attachments/proof: photos of residue and leak, dealer repair order/estimate for pump module, service history, and receipts (upload available). Ask: please record this as a safety-related cooling-system defect and consider investigation given recurrence on ea888 vehicles. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

53 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2023 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 09/20/2025

I bought the car in 2023 with 700 miles on it. Since then when coming from a stop the engine delays for about 5-10 seconds when pushing the gas, it eventually goes and happens often but not every time. Another issue is when coming to a stop the car turns off without any warning. When you try to go you have to put it back in park and start the car again. This has happened about ten times in two years. The last couple of times it has happened more regularly and in dangerous situations. I have brought it to two different dealerships as I have a 5 year warranty. First one told me they couldn’t replicate the issue but only drove the car 1 mile. Second drive it 30 miles and also told me there was nothing they could do. I started a case with vw and they called back saying they may have an idea and I need to bring it back for a third time but they have silent since. They also refused to tell me what it was they wanted to check.

54 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 09/12/2025

Low engine coolant light came on and began overheating all within a short period of time. Mechanic stated is has a blown/defective head gasket. It is currently being repaired by a mechanic as we need the car to drive our young children. A quick google search has shown this is an ongoing issue as there is a class action lawsuit with law group, sauder schelkopf.

55 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 09/02/2025

Vehicle was first sohwn to have low coolant and improper temps in the engine compartment, found to have multiple issues by independent car care facility regarding the coolant system and engine temperature. This also caused issues with rpms at idle and while parked. Car was taken to dealership for repair. Replacements under warranty made including thermostat, coolant pump, vacuum pump, toothed belt cover, and pressure pipe, etc. 1,000 miles later, issues continued, with the dealership having to perform a second fix including fixing the intake runner control valve. The car still behaved irregularly though assured that dealership performed full inspection. Now, third set of problems have arisen with the vehicle, with significantly low coolant after only 5 months post-repair and multiple spraying stains from oxidized coolant inside engine compartment. Vehicle still fluctuates in rpms at irregular times and has issues changing gears. Family members and children occupy this vehicle at regular times during the week, and having coolant issues, rpm spiking, idle lurching, and malfunctioning engine systems can lead to catastrophic failure of the entire vehicle while in transit, putting family life at serious risk of harm, injury, or death.

56 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 08/23/2025

With auto stop/start disengaged, vehicles stalls at slow speed (approaching a stop sign) or while idling at a stop light. Displays "start car manually" when this happens. Now error code displays "error stop-start" the stalling has happened 5 times this week.

57 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 08/13/2025

Our 2018 vw, when extremely hot temperatures would make a very loud grinding/squealing sound. Then the ac would intermittently work, sometimes it would blow cold, and sometimes it would not. Eventually, the ac stopped working altogether. There is a strong, hot, burning smell that comes through the vents during these times. These issues have caused extreme visibility as my windows fog up in humid conditions, causing me to not be able to see. I was almost in a car accident from this due to not being able to see and being in a large amount of traffic, trying to pull over to the side. This happened probably because the ac also dehumidifies the air for defogging. We had our vw into the morris dealership, being sent home each time, stating nothing was wrong. The last time we had it in demanding something was not right. They stated the ac compressor is not engaging now. Well, this explains why, every time it is hot and humid or raining, my windows are fogging up, causing me to not be able to see anything. This is an extreme safety hazard and has been for me and my children. This also explains the musty smell because this can cause mold and bacteria to grow due to trapped moisture. This is hard when this is our only family car, and many safety hazards.

58 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 08/10/2025

Car will randomly stop when using the auto start/stop feature. It can do this at slow speeds or when slowing down. Huge risk.

59 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 08/08/2025

Engine randomly stops while driving, in the middle of the road, warning says to manually restart engine. Happens with auto start/stop on or off. Lastest incident, while entering an intersection turning left, engine stopped, said to manually restart, steering locked up so could not steer the vehicle. This particular incident was very dangerous put me in the middle of a lot of traffic, in an intersection. Car is basically unsafe to drive at this point. Had it towed.

60 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 07/27/2025

Vehicle randomly stalls trying to leave from red lights or parking. Engine stumbles and vehicle dies causing many near accidents as you must put vehicle in park and restart.

61 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 07/21/2025

The vehicle experienced sudden loss of engine power accompanied by the illumination of the epc (electronic power control) warning light. The exact cause is fuel injection, but the issue appears related to the know evap problem on this car model. The problem may still be reproducible. The vehicle stalled multiple times while driving on a state highway (steady low load) and when approaching traffic. In each case, I had to come to a complete stop and restart the engine. This posed a serious risk of rear-end collisions or being struck by cross traffic, especially when power was lost during deceleration or merging. The epc light appeared each time the issue occurred, immediately after the engine lost power. No other warning lights or messages were observed prior to/after the failure. The problem began occurring intermittently and without prior symptoms.

62 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 07/20/2025

The engine shut-off while still driving between 10-15 mph when entering a gas station and turning uphill. Cannot say for certain, but the vehicle behaved similar to when the "start-stop" engine system activates. Electrical seemingly remained on, could not accelerate, and the dashboard requested something along the lines of needing to "restart. " similar scenario occurred the day prior but this time we were completely stopped. Came to a stop, attempted to accelerate, and the dashboard was referencing the same warning as above. This could clearly cause a major accident especially when it occurs while still moving at a respectable speed. Vw offers a switch to turn off this system, but the system does not keep the setting once the vehicle is turned off. It automatically activates upon ignition. Ironically, the failure of unwanted & over-complicated engineering cannot be permanently switched off by the vehicle remembering the last setting unless you wish to spend $100 from a third-party. Hopefully my wife remembers to press the magic button every time she turns on the vehicle.

63 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 07/19/2025

My 2018 Volkswagen Atlas v6 experienced a catastrophic engine failure at approximately 116,000 miles. The vehicle has been at a Volkswagen dealership for approximately six months (since July 2025) while repeated diagnostic attempts and repairs were made. I was ultimately informed that the engine requires full replacement. No clear warning was provided prior to failure, and the prolonged diagnosis resulted in the vehicle being unusable for an unreasonable length of time. Volkswagen of America has declined to offer assistance despite the severity of the failure and extended time out of service. I have reached out to volkswagon and so has the dealership (paul miller Volkswagen of bernardsville). We each created a case each on my behalf but volkswagon of America has declined assistance. I am concerned about premature engine failure and the lack of resolution.

64 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 07/17/2025

When driving, the vehicle will lose all acceleration and come to a stop. If you try to move the vehicle it will stall out. There are no warning signs or faults. However, if you let the vehicle sit for a few hours, it will run again as normal. This happened to us twice while on a road tirp. Once on the trip to the destination and the other to the trip home. Vw road side assistance was a joke, and did not help get us off of the highway as we were stuck with my [xxx], [xxx], [xxx], and wife. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

65 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2023 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 07/16/2025

I own a 2023 vw Atlas purchased new from a Volkswagen dealership. In October 2024, while the vehicle was under warranty, I reported engine hesitation, rough idle, and near-stalling. I showed the service advisor a video I recorded of the issue happening in real time. Despite this, the dealership refused to investigate further because no check engine light or fault codes were present. I was sent home without diagnosis or documentation. Months later, the issue worsened and was diagnosed as a failed fuel injector — now quoted at nearly $3,000 to repair, plus a $175 diagnostic fee. Vw refuses to cover the cost or provide goodwill assistance, stating that the dealership couldn’t replicate the issue and therefore couldn’t act. I was also denied the ability to speak with a service manager when the failure occurred. This injector issue clearly began during the warranty period and was dismissed without proper investigation. The behavior compromised the vehicle’s driveability and posed a potential safety risk to me and my children. There needs to be accountability when clear evidence is provided and dealerships refuse to act until the problem escalates past warranty coverage. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate fuel injector failures in the 2023 vw Atlas and the pattern of warranty denial tied to lack of fault codes, despite clear performance issues and owner-supplied evidence.

66 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 06/29/2025

While I am driving, when I come to a stop or slow down to almost a stop my engine will periodically shut off where I need to put the car in park and turn the car off and then back on. This has happened multiple times but is especially dangerous when I am in stop/go traffic on a major highway and it happens. The check engine light does come on but the mechanics just turn the engine signal off and say there is nothing wrong. After a couple hundred miles the check engine light returns and the problem continues to persist.

67 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 06/24/2025

Pulling into a parking, backing out of my driveway on to the road, rolling with my foot off the gas preparing to brake the car shut off in gear. It is very dangerous happening when we back out of the driveway on to the road having to shift to park and manually restart the car. It happens with the auto shut off both on and off. This is a big issue that needs resolved before someone gets seriously hurt.

68 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 06/20/2025

I’ve owned the vehicle for less than 60 days. The vehicle currently has 2000 miles however, the vehicle has placed us in danger due to the inability to charge the battery. The lack of battery voltage also makes the ac inoperable on 100 degree temps. During an attempted repair it was noticed the fuse box has melted. Technicians are uncertain the cause of this issue. They are uncertain if it’s an electrical issue or due to the alternator. They’ve had the car for over a week with no clear definitive plan and no communication. The car doesn’t reliability start and the possibility of fire is clear based on components that are melting.

69 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 06/16/2025

Vw Atlas randomly shuts off when coming to a stop or slowing down. I have to put the car in park and then restart the vehicle. This is incredibly dangerous and scary. This has happened at least 5 times now, all while driving on the road and in traffic. No warning lights popped up. A few times it said I need to manually restart the engine. The most recent time it didn’t say anything at all, my vehicle just slowed down and would not accelerate. I have noticed this issue both when enabling and disabling the auto start/stop feature.

70 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas

Failure Date: 06/15/2025

We bought a 2021. 5 Volkswagen Atlas that, starting around 15,000 miles, began having computer-related issues that were reported but never truly repaired. Over time, those issues escalated into serious drivability and safety problems. Beginning in mid-2025, the car started driving poorly. It had hesitation, dragging, poor fuel economy, and then began stalling, sometimes at idle and sometimes while driving. At first, repairs like a battery replacement were tried, but they did not fix the problem. In August 2025, the car stalled on the interstate in nashville with flashing epc and check engine lights and would not restart. Our family, including our children, was stranded in an unsafe situation. The car had to be towed, and a fuel pump was replaced. Even after that repair, the stalling and warning lights continued. Later in August, when the car continued to stall, don jacobs Volkswagen told us the problem was a warranty-covered evap (carbon) canister and that repairing it should resolve the issue. It did not. In December 2025, the car stalled again with flashing warnings and was deemed unsafe to drive. It was towed back to don jacobs, where a second fuel pump replacement was performed. In January 2026, the check engine light came on again and the car was returned to the dealership. At that time, we were told the evap canister had been left unattached from prior testing, not from the most recent repair. Since then, the vehicle has continued to drive poorly, with ongoing hesitation and dragging. In total, the vehicle has been in the shop four times, including three visits to the same dealership, and no one has been able to diagnose or permanently repair it. The dealership has told us they cannot proceed unless specific fault codes appear, even though the vehicle continues to malfunction and send diagnostic alerts through the Volkswagen app. Because of the repeated stalling, unresolved repairs, and lack of a clear path to fix the problem, we do not feel the vehicle.
