Our 2021 vw Atlas was rear-ended while stopped at stop light. The other driver was going an estimated 45 mph. At impact, the driver seat broke backwards hitting our 5 year old child in the face. The child was in a 5-point harness car seat and the only injuries resulting from the accident were to the face and head. We were taken to a children's hospital in an ambulance where the child stayed 5 nights with facial fractures, a broken nose, skull fracture, and csf leak.

The vehicle has middle row captains chairs. While slowing down for a stoplight, the captain chair behind the driver side lunged forward pinning my son’s head between his car seat and the back of my seat. Prior to the incident, there was no error indication (would pop up red) telling me there was a bad latch when putting my son in his car seat. Is it available for inspection upon request? yes, I still currently own the vehicle. My [xxx] old was not safe in his seat it flung forward he was stuck squished between two seats. I was unsafe as I was in a turn lane at a stoplight and got out of my vehicle to assist him. Thankfully, there were no cars behind me. The problem has not been resolved produced by me. But I am aware of other people this has happened to, my friend this happened (same make and model year as mine) and two random people on a group on facebook. The vehicle was inspected by a dealership tech and after they sent pictures to vw they deemed it to not be returned to me until repair was done. My major concern now is that they replaced one of two captains chairs. They will not replace the parts on the second captain chair because it did not fail. My kids are traumatized over this and my older daughter does not trust the seat. So they are waiting for this to happen in the other seat before they will repair it. I can’t be naive to think the situation could be worse next time and my job as a parent is to keep them safe. These seats are not safe. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no, nothing. During a low speed parking lot stop the 2nd row bench came unlatched, the seat bottom dropped and slid forward. My [xxx] son who was in his forward facing car seat slammed into the back of the driver seat. Then the bench seat was jammed in this position, he was smashed and stuck between his car seat and the driver seat, the bench seat would not move, it was stuck and my child was trapped, screaming and bleeding from his face. I had to use the driver power seat functions to move it forward to get my child un trapped. Once out we tended to his medical needs as he was bleeding from his face and screaming. The seat is still stuck in this forward/dropped position and will not move. The seat latch release handle has no resistance and will not do anything. His car seat was still smashed against the driver seat and I was unable to get it out from the side, I had to lift it out through the sunroof to get it out! we took him to local urgent care, he has a laceration on his eye, bruising, swelling and is very emotionally upset as are we. I do have a dash cam and have the footage of the seat slamming forward. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

The passenger air bag has a faulty sensor and the instrument cluster has an intermittent warning with audible chime. We are unable to use the vehicle for safe transportation and we are intermittently bombarded with the chime while driving. The dealership cannot repair until July 3 and does not offer any alternative transportation in the mean time or any loaner during repair. We have contacted vw customer care and they refuse to do anything about it. They have directed us to the dealership. We are unable to get around as a family currently due to this issue. There is an active recall for this issue.
Infotainment display graphics issue; most controls (including disabling seat heaters) are through this screen and camera is displayed on it. Unable to see display clearly and therefore interact with controls or view backup camera to look for obstacles. Search online for "2024 Atlas screen glitch" and you'll see quite a few pictures that are similar.
I contacted vw several times about the faulty airbag sensor/electrical system not working. Was told parts not available. If I’m to get into a crash with a passenger. They will be severally injured due to this part not being available. Recall #24v464 action code #69pz.
There is no solution for this recall. This is our family vehicle. We need the front passenger seat.

Right now there is a recall for an incorrectly working airbag for my volkswagon and I have a lease that is up next month. They will not buy back my vehicle because of the recall and the fact that they have no fix. I have a family of 5 and need all 5 seats and now cannot drive my car with everyone without a giant safety risk. This is happening in concert with a faulty air conditioning unit in the vehicle that has been serviced more than 5 times in a 3 year period and is currently at the dealership to have the a/c unti fixed but now is not willing to negiotate because they know they cannot resell the vehicle.
The seat unlocked indicator does not activate showing that the seat is locked and safe to sit in. I informed the dealer in 2019 and filed a complaint when my child’s car seat was in an unlocked seat.

I have a moonroof that leaks whenever it rains. It comes on the sides of the car and also in the middle near my rearview mirror which leaks on my electronics. I am at risk because it brings water into my car when I am driving. It can cause mold and mildew as well. I've taking this to my local vw dealership without any resolution. They just said its a well know issue. The attempted to 'clean' the drains but it still leaks.

1. The plastic piece attached to the outer section of the back passenger seats of the 2024 vw Atlas is designed where the seat belt gets easily tangled in the seat tract, allowing the seatbelt to get caught and rendering the seat inoperable. This component should be available for inspection upon request. 2. This design flaw poses a risk by potentially causing the seatbelt to get caught, rendering the seat inoperable. In the event of a crash or sudden stop, this issue could compromise the effectiveness of the seatbelt, jeopardizing the safety of the occupants. 3. I am unsure if any other vw customer have experienced this issue as the car is only two weeks old and I have encountered this issue and fear it will happen again with kids utilizing the backseats. In order for the seat to become functional again it required that it be removed by a technician and I was recommended to purchase seat belt covers. 4. Yes, I have taken the car to the dealership and they are going to engage their engineer for a potential solution to for this design issue. 5. No.
We have been told to stop using front passenger seat. The recall has been out for well over 6 months with no remedy.
From the first day of purchase of vehicle bought new. The second row was not installed correctly from manufacturer. I had taken to vw for maintenance to fix. Vw of clear lake stated seat was fixed. Seat is still not fixed. Not correctly aligned and still making very load noise. I went back to vw. Vw stated it’s too late for repairs. It hasn’t been a year until February 2025.
The contact owns a 2020 Volkswagen Atlas. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the air bag sensor warning light illuminated and the seat warming function failed. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the wiring in the seat was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 64,000.

This car has an active recall on it since April, 2023 with no known remedy. In the meantime, I'm not supposed to have a passenger sit in the front seat. My lease is ending. I cannot buy the car from the dealer because they won't sell it with an open recall.
I am experiencing issues related to the airbag sensor recall as the sensor does not know if someone is in the seat or not - it thinks someone is there when they aren't, and vice versa. This recall was announced in April of 2023, and since then, I have been unable to have any passengers ride in my front seat. Needless to say this is not only very inconvenient but also impacts my ability to trade in or sell this vehicle.
We pulled into a parking space and the second row disengaged, propelling the seat quickly forward. Our four-year old was sitting in a car seat in the second row when this happened. The car seat went forward, slamming our child's nose, face, and head into the back of the driver's seat. The second row then lodged in the eject position, with our child stuck at an angle, tipped over into the driver's seat. We had to pull the driver's seat as far forward as it would go in order to undo the car seat straps and extricate our four year old from the car seat through the small opening between the second row and the driver's seat. Our child was terrified, with a hurt nose, though thankfully not badly injured. We were not able to get the second row back up, it stuck forward. We have dropped the car off to the Volkswagen dealership and are awaiting repairs. There were no lights or warning prior to this incident. This is the second time the row has dislodged. Another time it happened while the car was in motion and again propelled our child (different child) forward into the back of the driver's seat, slamming our child's face against the driver's seat.
Vehicle has had a call some match 2023. There still is no remedy for repair.
Complaint: vehicle owners observed the dashboard airbag warning light flash sporadically on while driving. Passenger seat occupant detection mat, control module, and harness failure. (failed parts are available) the passenger airbag system failed, jeopardizing the safety of the driver and all the occupants. The parts associated with this failure have been confirmed and inspected by the dealer. Dealer diagnoses: ro 84066 - 74778: “airbag light and airbag warning are not currently on. Test drove, could not duplicate concern. Connected battery charger, performed gff, b1225f1 passive occupant detection system mat shield wire, open circuit (passive/sporadic) stored in airbag module. Inspected passenger seat harness and occupant detection connectors, no problems found. Recommend replacing detection mat. Detection mat replacement requires replacement of seat harness and occupant detection control module. ” dealer repair: ro 85716 - 80008: “replaced occupant detection mat, control module, and seat harness per diagnosis on repair order 84066. Removed passenger front seat. Replaced lower seat cushion, occupant detection mat, control module, and seat harness. Reinstalled seat. Connected battery charger, performed gff, performed occupant detection basic settings. Cleared codes. Confirmed operation of occupant detection, seat heater, and seat adjustment. ”.
Upon stopping at an intersection, one of the bench seats quickly shot forward and slammed a child in a car seat into the rear passenger seat. Thankfully there were no injuries, but this required the driver to pull over and investigate what happened with the seat. There appeared to be nothing that would have caused the seat to move forward.
The captain seats lurches forward at a high speed without any warning as well as without any precipitating event. This has occurred three times, once with the driver side captain seat and two times with the passenger seat. The indicator on the top of the seat was down before each event so the assumption was the seat was securely locked in position. A child was in a car seat on the passenger side captain seat during the last unlatching event resulting in the child hitting the back of the passenger seat knocking her front teeth loose and bruising her nose (pic attached). The driver stopped in traffic and put the car in park to get out and assist the child as this was the only way to get the seat back in position. The car is to be inspected by the dealer today.
On Thursday, April 14th, the airbag warning light illuminated while displaying an "airbag error" message. The vehicle was dropped off at the dealership the same day. The information below is from the Volkswagen dealership in tulsa, ok “performed guided fault finding diagnosis, dtc b100b: driver's thorax airbag igniter, -n199-, resistance too high. Performed procedure as per TSB #2066699 (revised may 3, 2022). Removed driver's seat backrest and inspected driver's seat wiring harness connector t3ax for damage, poor connection, pin terminals pushed back, ect. No issues were noted. Reassembled seat and reconnected harness. Cleared dtc memory and road tested vehicle. Dtc b100b reset immediately. As per TSB #2066699, replacement of the driver's thorax airbag -n199- and seat wiring harness are required. Special ordered parts. Parts are on backorder. 3cn-880-241-m sideairbag 3cm-971-391-c harness”.
I am reporting a design defect in the vw Atlas second row bench. There is no sensor or warning for the driver when the bench seat is not secure. When the car came to a stop from a low speed, the bench fell forward with enough force to fracture my child's leg who was sitting secure in a child's car seat. We reported the design problem to the manufacturer. The vehicle manufacturer inspected the vehicle for a manufacturing defect, not a design defect. When asked to pursue an inspection on design defect, the manufacturer noted they would and did not. This problem is replicable. Our concern is that the car does not alert the driver that the bench is not secure. Our incident could have been avoided if there was a driver warning.
Captain seat became unlatched when braking quickly, causing the 40lb child sitting in forward facing booster seat to slam head first into back of passenger seat. Seat was then difficult to re-set and lock back into proper position from driver's seat while pulling off highway to a safe location, resulting in child being trapped between captain seat and front passenger seat until vehicle was stopped. Latch appears to be working as expected and has not released unexpectedly otherwise.
The red strap is extremely too easy to pull and is super accessible for children to reach. My son in the 3rd row pulled the strap and my son in the middle row flung forward. Had he had been literally an inch farther up, he would’ve been seriously injured. Something needs to be done about this. There was a viral post on social media about this not long ago. The straps either need a safety feature where they only work if the car’s door is open or parked. Or the straps just simply need to be placed somewhere else and not easily accessible to children placed in the 3rd row. This is supposed to be a family vehicle. Please fix it.
I feel as if the 2nd row lever system is a malfunction. It does not provide safety for the 2nd row of passengers to not be crushed or be smashed into the back of the front row seats if the lever is pulled while the vehicle is in motion. This is our only vehicle and our family vehicle. It can happily be available upon request. The safety of any child passenger is at risk if they are in the 2nd row and the lever to fold the seats down or back to gain access to the 3rd row is accidentally pulled while the vehicle is in motion. The problem has not been confirmed or reproduced at a service center. It can easily be reproduced but for the safety of my small children, without kids in the 2nd row. This is an internal (inside the vehicle) safety failure or malfunction. It has not been inspected by any official at this time. There isn't anything that locks the seat rail in place while the vehicle is in motion. This is an internal vehicle issue that does not give any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms to warn of the lever being pulled or activated. It has recently come to my attention that our vw Atlas is lacking in any safety feature that prevents the 2nd row from coming unlatched from the rails, when the row lever is released. This does cause a significant safety issue as most children don't know that they cannot and should not reach or use this lever while the vehicle is in motion, thus causing significant, if not life threatening injury to the children riding in the 2nd row. I myself have 2 children under 2. I know as they get older or as we watch their cousins more often, we will be utilizing the 3rd row more. I do not want to have to worry that my nieces or nephews have pulled the lever causing the seat to catapult my children's necks into the backs of the front row seats. I want to stress how important it is to fix it. My daughter is due to be front-facing in the next couple of months in her car seat.
We have a 2021. 5 Volkswagen Atlas with captain’s chairs in the 2nd row. Our 4 year old was riding in a forward-facing car seat installed with lower anchors + tether strap in the 2nd row driver’s side and a friend’s 8 year old was riding in the 3rd row driver’s side in a backless booster. I was in the front passenger seat and my husband was driving. While my husband was braking, the 8 year old lifted up on the 3rd row access lever, located on the upper left side of the 2nd row driver’s side captain’s chair. The 2nd row captain’s chair lifted up, slid forward, and slammed my 4 year old son into the driver’s seat. The 8 year old immediately panicked, which caused me to turn around. My 4 year old was not making any noise - almost certainly because his nose and mouth were pressed tightly into the back of the driver’s seat, preventing him from making a sound. While in the front passenger seat, I tried to push the captain’s chair back into place - but it was way too heavy. Luckily, we were on a road where my husband was able to quickly pull over and jump out to put the captain’s chair back into place. As soon as my husband started to move the captain’s chair away from the driver’s seat, my 4 year old started screaming. After this incident, our 4 year old showed us that while buckled into his forward-facing car seat in the 3rd row of the Atlas he was able to use his foot to lift up on the 3rd row access lever, causing the captain's chair to slam into the back of the front seat exactly as happened when the 8 year old lifted the lever during our trip.
My 6-year-old son was in the middle left seat, I pulled the car out of garage and drove up to the intersection next to my home and applied gentle break. His seat came all the way in the front and his nose hit the driver seat. This is the third time it has happened that seat was not properly locked. After it happened second time, we have been careful to check the seat before we start driving. We heard the click sound indicating that the seat was properly locked. It's been a terrifying experience for the young one. I'm also attaching the picture of his bruised nose.
When lowering the third row seats of the Atlas the seats slam down and forward with great force. When parked today, I was lowering the seats and the seat lowered with such force the my foot was mashed and pinned immediately a large knot appeared. I plan to have an x-ray of the foot tomorrow. My immediate thought was the damage that could have been done to a smaller child.
Tl- the contact owns a Volkswagen Atlas. The contact stated that when the brake pedal was depressed while driving at various speeds, the middle row seats violently flew forward while occupied. The contact also mentioned that the failure happened while the seats were not occupied. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for a diagnostic test or repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the contact was given a case number. The failure mileage was 11,000. Dr.
While driving and coming to a slow stop at a stop sign. The middle row right side seat disengaged while child and car seat in the seat and flung forwarded and into the back of the front passenger seat.
No use of the airbags in the front passenger seat in my Atlas it makes it soo that my seven seater is really a 6 seater that doesn’t have a front passenger seat it’s unbelievable.
After owning an Atlas for about 2 weeks, I picked up my 2 year old and put him in his forward-facing car seat in the 2nd row. As I started to slow down as we approached a red light (normal stop - not a hard brake by any means), the seat that my 2 year old was sitting in slammed forward into the back of the front passenger seat. With my child screaming and crying, I quickly put the vehicle into park and turned around to push his seat back into the normal position. My child had a minor abrasion on his forehead but fortunately, the head protection on either side of his head took the brunt of the impact. The captains chair must have not been locked into place. After investigating further, I found that I really have to make an effort to get these seats to lock into place. Simply pushing these seats into place will not lock them (I kind of have to slam them back to get them to lock). In my opinion, these seats should lock into place much easier. I could easily see many children sustaining injuries (or worse) in this vehicle due to this flaw.
We purchased our vw Atlas on August 24, 2018. Since then, we have experienced two occasions where the second row seat has hinged forward while occupied by our seven year old daughter in her car seat with the car was in motion. In both cases it has been the second row seat on the right. In both instances, our daughter was thrown forward into the back of the passenger's seat with significant force when the vehicle was moving down hill at a slow speed toward a stop sign. Had the vehicle been moving faster and come to an abrupt stop it seems likely that severe injury and possible death could have occurred instantly to her. We feel that the pop up indicator located on the top of the seat is an inadequate means to inform the driver that the seat is not properly secured to the floor. We missed this very important indicator on two occasions now. When we purchased the car and went through all notifications on the car with the salesperson, this was not brought to our attention. At minimum, this very technical vehicle should alert the driver before driving (similar to the seatbelt notification) with both an oral and visual alert that the seat is not properly secured to prevent this from happening to other owners or users of the vehicle. It has been a terrifying experience for our daughter who is trapped against the passenger seat until the driver can stop the car and move the seat back. She no longer wants to sit in that seat. This certainly seems like a possibly life-threatening issue to validate a safety recall. We hope that action is taken to keep all passengers safe.
