Tire Problems of Volkswagen Atlas

Tire size 245/60/r18/105t car was purchased new in 2025, after 4750 miles of driving I reported having 5 flat tires . It appears to me that these tires are soft ( maybe for sales purposes ) but are not correct for vechicle weight and class plus perhaps flordia heat and temperatures . Each time a screw or nail was found . I can understand 1 or 2 but 5 in only driving limited miles as I am retired I asked to get a partial refund so I could purchase a better tires and they are not responding or telling me to contact the tire company. Its not the tires per say but the selection vw has made to sell their cars.

Driving north on I-405 on Dec 21st the right rear tire on my 2021 Atlas completely failed and ripped apart through the sidewall and on the treads. The tire model was continental crosscontact lx sport 245/60 r18 105t m+s radial tubeless. I have already replaced the tire at costco in inglewood, CA. This was a scary incident and endangered my family and others traveling on the highway. I contacted continental and they said that tires matching this in 2021 were on a recall, but not this one from 2020. I find that suspicious because it's very close and matches description of failures.

The tire started making a sound like every 15 miles or so like it was going over a speed burn (small bumps) on the side of the freeway. I pulled over and checked the tread for rubbing, nails, scarring and there was nothing. After about 60 miles or so and the sound occurring 4 times the tpm light came on. Shortly afterwards the sidewall blew out in 4 separate spots in the tire. I had the vehicle towed and the tires replaced. All tires were filled back up to their recommended psi. It’s been about 3 weeks and now a second tire (same model) is making the same noise. I am having it replaced before the tire blows like the other.

Tire: continental crosscontact lx sport 255/50 r20 105t incident description: while traveling about 65mph, in the center lane of I-40, under clear weather conditions, the vehicle, a 2021 Volkswagen Atlas sel premium, experienced a sudden and catastrophic failure of the left rear tire. No object or pothole was hit in the road. The failure was characterized by a loud noise, an immediate deceleration of the vehicle, and significant vibrations. No warning lamps, messages or other symptoms prior to the failure. Actions taken: the vehicle was safely maneuvered from the center lane to the right shoulder of the highway without further incident. Upon exiting the vehicle, a visual inspection revealed that the left rear tire had exploded, causing extensive damage to the vehicle’s left side. The damage included significant harm to the wheel well, rear suspension, and other structural and mechanical components. Additionally, remnants of the tire were found in the middle of the highway that were unable to be retrieved safely. Subsequent measures: the vehicle was towed from the scene on a flatbed truck to a repair center and damage was repaired. Tire was submitted to continental for review under a property damage claim. Continental declined culpability, citing potential previous damage to the tire sidewall that may not have been visible. Tire had no visible damage prior to the blow-out.

We purchased our Volkswagen Atlas in September of 2019 and have driven it under 27,000 miles. In that time we have had 3 flat tires. The first one was when we first got it and was triggered by a hit to the curb. It was a gentle hit that surprised that it caused a flat. A few days ago on a clear day on a smooth road, we heard a pop from our front passenger tire. It was a flat. There was no pothole or object in the road. We took to the dealer and spent $1,500 where they replaced that tire and also replaced the front drivers tire due to dry rot cracks found in the thread. They also completed 4 wheel alignment. The next day I was driving and the pressure light came on and we had a flat tire in the back passenger side. As with the day earlier, there was nothing in the road and no pothole. Continental cross contact lx sport 255x50x20 has a large bulge/bubble approx 21/2” from the letter t on contact on the sidewall. This tire has had issues since new with losing air pressure. The drivers side rear has had same issue with losing pressure. It has a bulge in same spot on tire sidewall.

255/50 r20 105 kumho 7 crugen premiu 23186 miles front tires are completely worn out. Car only has 28,000 miles. It causes car to lose traction and skid.

Tire sidewall separating causing an immediate flat tire while traveling in the fast lane at 70mph on the freeway. This put me and other vehicles at risk as it was with no warning, just immediately a flat tire. Dealer was called and seems uninterested in seeing the tire as it was not apart of the most recent recall regarding this same issue with continental tires. Continental tire manufacturer also seems uninterested in helping as the tire was replaced by a different brand as that was the only option on labor day so I could return home due to being 400 miles from home at the time of the incident.
