37 Seat Belt problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 04/15/2009

1. My airbag light in my car came on. 2. I took it to a repair shop that found the seatbelt sensor had gone bad thus causing the airbag light to come on and the airbags would not deploy in the case of an accident. 3. The seatbelt was replaced so that the sensor would again be working correctly and the airbags would be deployed in the case of an accident. As the seatbelt mechanism was working fine, but just a tiny sensor on the seatbelt arm went bad, it caused my airbags to be deactivated. There should be a lifetime warranty on such safety parts such that there is never a failure to deploy airbags or an issue with seatbelts. The auto repair employees said they have replaced hundreds of these seatbelts in vws for the very same reason I had.

38 Seat Belt problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 04/15/2009

2002 vw Beetle. The airbag warning light is on. The diagnosis is that a wire to the driver's side seat belt latch is broken therefore relaying that the seat belt is not latched (false positive). When the air bag light is on the air bag function is disabled. The repair is not of a wire, but of the entire seat belt at $250+. At any time this is a lot but when out of a job may be impossible. As my college-age daughter is the one in the seat, I am left without much choice, but to pay for the repair. This is the third time the air bag light has gone on, all with different diagnosis. Why is this not considered a safety issue? the topic is frequent on the web.

39 Seat Belt problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 04/06/2009

I am an owner of a 2002 Volkswagen Beetle. My seatbelt light came on. I brought car into greenbrier Volkswagen dealership located in chesapeake, va in Feb 2009. I was informed that the latch (buckle) on drivers side seat was defective. I had dealership replace. One month later seatbelt light came on again. I brought car back to dealership. I was told by dealership that passenger seatbelt latch (buckle) was defective. I called dealership and spoke with my service rep brent from greenbrier Volkswagen and he stated "this is a known problem with Beetles" I asked him if it is a known problem on a importation safety device of a seatbelt was is there no recall on vehicle to replace defective seatbelt latches. He was unable to provide me an answer. I now have concerns with not only my vehicle safety, but all who drive Beetles. I would like to know if this is a known problem if will there be a mandatory recall.

41 Seat Belt problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 08/11/2008

My 2006 Volkswagen Beetle has had 4 failures of the air bag system. According to Volkswagen certified dealerships, the part that keeps failing is a sensor in the seatbelt. When this sensor malfunctions the entire airbag system is rendered useless. It goes off randomly, with no trauma or incident to the vehicle. The part costs more than $600 to fix. I have had it repaired in 2008, 2010, 2013 and now the same part has failed again. Each time it went out it was within a year of the previous failure, although until recently I did not realize that the airbag system was disabled - I waited to take it in because of the inconvenience. The light also randomly turns off one out of every 10-15 drives. The Volkswagen regional case manager informed me that - despite the fact that the part is clearly faulty and has continuously failed due to no fault of my own or any factors I could control - they will not replace it and expect me to pay the cost for the yearly/bi-yearly failure because my car has 102,000 miles on it. The failure has nothing to do with milage and the same problem was fixed multiple times when the car had lower milage. (plus, I purchased the extended warranty to 100,000) this part clearly needs to be recalled. I have seen hundreds of postings from other people online suffering from the same issue and Volkswagen is sticking the consumer with the bill for their shoddy workmanship. When I asked "if I pay to fix it now, will you be covering the rest of the replacements it will obviously need down the line?" the answer was a "no. " it is a serious safety issue that needs to be handled by some body with authority over this company. The vehicle is not meeting basic safety standards. I maintain the parts of my vehicle each year that I am required to - Volkswagen needs to do their part to make their vehicles work properly.

42 Seat Belt problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 01/18/2008

The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Beetle. The contact noticed a u-shaped bar attached to the seat belt, which allows the seat belt to move to the back when not in use. However, the seat belt did not function correctly. It would provide the contact approximately eight inches of "extra" seat belt because it would pop to the back position when it should have come to the front. She was concerned that the design of the bar was the cause of the failure and could reduce the protection needed in the event of a crash. The manufacturer and dealer have not been notified. The current mileage was 21,142 and failure mileage was approximately 12,000.

43 Seat Belt problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 01/19/2006

: the consumer stated the air bag light illuminated on a continuous basis. The dealership determined the switch in the seat belt needs to be replaced. If the switch is not replaced, the air bag may not deploy in a collision. Updates 3/3/2006 -.

44 Seat Belt problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 05/05/2005

The airbag light, among other things, in our 2004 new Beetle has come on approximately 10 times in three years. Each time, the vehicle was taken back to the dealer and supposedly fixed, but without fail, the light came back on each time. The seatbelt buckle was changed, connections were secured, they said it was shorted (guided fault findings, bumper cover removed, seat removed), and others. I have all copies of service records. After all these service visits, the airbag light is still on and we are very concerned that the airbag system is not working correctly and could cause serious damage and may not deploy correctly during an accident. I heard there was an investigation being conduct on the 2004 new Beetles and wanted to let you know of our experience. Crash sensor. Pco.

45 Seat Belt problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Beetle

Failure Date: 01/01/2005

The contact owns a 2002 Volkswagen Beetle. Over the course of three years, the seat belt light remained illuminated on the dashboard. The first time this incident occurred the failure was remedied at the Volkswagen dealer. The second time, the entire seat belt unit was replaced as a result of a crash. The contact notified the manufacturer on multiple occasions, but Volkswagen is unable to resolve the failure. The current mileage is 50,500 and failure mileage was 30,000.
