1 Wiring problem of the 2018 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 06/26/2023

I have owned the 2018 vw gti since new. With 105,000 miles, following a 30 minute highway drive, the epc light came on and the vehicle entered limp mode. After turning car off, letting it sit 5 minutes, and restarting, epc light went off and no limp mode. Drove car daily for another week with no observed issues until appointment. Brought car to dealer. They identified the fuel injector wiring harness was faulty and needed to be replaced, and fuel injector #3 was dirty and needed to be replaced, at total cost of $1,756. Online search turned up vwp-23-03, a fuel injector wiring harness limited warranty extension up to 10 years or 120,000 miles for similar vw cars: 2018-2019 tiguan 2018-2019 beetle 2018-2020 passat so the same exact part, on thousands of other vw models produced at the same time, is covered by a warranty extension. The dealer declined to cover this repair. Vw customer care declined to cover this repair or offer partial coverage. The car has been repaired by dealer (harness was shorted). I am not asking for special treatment. I am looking for fairness. If vw has identified a given component as defective on three different models, and the same component fails on my gti, then vw should also cover the gti under the warranty extension.

2 Wiring problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 11/07/2014

When starting my Golf tdi I received several warning messages on the car's information screen to check turning lights, brake lights, headlights and running lights on the right hand side of the car. The right hand headlights, turn signals and brakelights were out. The cause of the fault was a melted fusebox. The internal wiring of the fusebox overheated and melted the plastic of the box and the plastic of the fuse without breaking the circuit. According to my repair shop, this is a design flaw afflicting as many as one million vws of various years. I saw that vw has initiated recalls for this problem with other models, but not the Golf or Golf tdis. This fault can cause the vehicle to lose partial or total headlights and turn signals, creating a significant safety hazard for drivers and other vehicles.

4 Wiring problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 07/20/2010

2001 vw Golf with 192285 mi experienced loss of electrical power to systems that are mounted on the rear hatch back door, (third brake light, rear defrosters, and wiper). Upon inspection of the wiring harness found the wiring chaffed and or broken at point where the harness passes through the harness shield. (where the harness passes from the car body to the lift gate).

5 Wiring problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 12/01/2008

The contact owns a 2003 Volkswagen Golf. While driving approximately 70 mph on normal road conditions, the brake lights failed. The glow plug warning indicator illuminated intermittently on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing. The failure was related to the wiring circuit in the brake system. The technician ordered the parts for the repair. The vehicle has not yet been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 118,000. Updated 1/6/09 the consumer stated there were wiring bundles that pass from the body into the rear hatch for the center brake light, windshield wiper and electrical locks. The wires bend whenever the hatch is opened or closed. The opening and closing of the hatch, caused the wiring to crack and eventually led to a short of a fuse. Updated 01/14/09.

6 Wiring problem of the 2005 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 04/01/2005

Sunroof drains clog causing backup of water to settle on floors ruining carpet, causing mold. Water gets into door frames causing buckling of doors during winter months. Water damage also caused an electrical wiring short which caused an airbag failure as well as ruined two batteries. I have not used or opened the sunroof since for fear of more problems. I was informed that the cost to replace the carpeting again would be charged to me if the car had another water problem again due to the clogged drains.

8 Wiring problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 07/08/2003

Electrical defect: when turning ignition on and engine running, I experience a total loss of headlights, a/c fan motor, defroster, drl, fog lamps, rear-window defogger, and heater. (all other electrical systems continue functioning. ) sometimes the problem is intermittent where everything functions; most of the time none of these units function electrically. Additional note: the "brake" lamp glows on in the dash when this electrical problem occurs. (emergency brake is not engaged. ) cannot drive at night. Volkswagon will not pay for repair.

9 Wiring problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 05/01/2003

The driver's side window failed to respond, the hazzard lights would flash when the defroster was turned on, the gas tank cover would open when the car was started, the remote control would not work. . . A bunch of random problems were intermittent at first -then became permanant. The service manager at barry volkswagon (dartmouth MA) insisted that it was not related to an advisory report on window clips but offered to fix it for $1000. Tracy volkswagon (hyannis, MA) took a look at the same car and fixed the problem under warranty. It was the window clips service bulletin number: 640101.

10 Wiring problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Golf

Failure Date: 02/07/2003

Instrument cluster fire in 1999 vw Golf tdi: 2003-01-14, mileage 88290, lights and gauges on instrument cluster were acting flaky and not working properly. Some lights were dim and some were burnt out. 2003-02-05, I bought new instrument cluster. Plan was to have dealership replace faulty one with new one on 2003-02-10. A few days after I bought new one, the car’s existing one suddenly emitted sparks while I was driving in a snow storm, and caught on fire! thick, acrid smoke billowed from underneath the dashboard, forcing me out of the car. I put out the fire with my jacket and some snow. 2003-02-10, dealership replaced instrument cluster. During the first heavy snowfall after that, car started bucking at low rpms and when attempting to shift gears. Speedometer started fluctuating wildly, showing me going anywhere from 0 to 120 mph. Temperature gauge started fluctuating between 0 and danger zone, and temperature alarm sounded whenever the gauge jumped into the danger zone. Fuel gauge dropped to empty. Odometer froze up. 2003-04-04, mileage 90906, technician at dealership found 300 kilo-ohm resistance in wiring harness grounds. The four main ground wire ends were horribly corroded. As a result, there was no power going to the engine coolant temperature sensor, vehicle speed sensor, or coolant bottle sensor. Technician left the existing wiring harness in place, since most of the harness wires were working fine. He disconnected and capped the ends of the four corroded wires. He then ran new wires to the affected sensors (creating an “overlay harness”), crimped new connectors on the ends, and used heat shrink on the crimps. I haven't had any instrument cluster fires since then; however, I have replaced the ect sensor 7 times during the 15 years I have owned this car, possibly because of lingering grounding issues. Current mileage is about 392,000.
