1 Steering problem of the 2014 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 05/22/2026

I started my car and drove to a local 7-11 on my way to work and could not turn the key to shut the engine off. I proceeded to work and asked my friend to help me. After a struggle he got the key out,and 3 days later parked my car at a clients only to not be able to start the car. My steering wheel locking was random and was afraid it would lock up while driving. Was told at the dealership there was no recall even after I searched and found this to be problem enough that vw extended their warranty.

2 Steering problem of the 2016 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 02/27/2026

While driving my 2016 Volkswagen Gti mk7 autobahn edition with approximately 37,000 miles, the power steering suddenly and without warning failed completely. The steering wheel became extremely difficult to turn, requiring significant physical force to operate. Simultaneously, both the tpms (tire pressure monitoring system) warning light and the esc (electronic stability control) warning light illuminated on the dashboard. I brought the vehicle to an authorized Volkswagen dealership, deel Volkswagen in miami, florida. The dealership diagnosed the issue as a complete failure of the steering rack and pinion assembly and quoted approximately $6,000 for replacement. This failure occurred at only 37,000 miles — far below any reasonable expectation of component life for a steering rack, which should last well over 100,000 miles under normal use. The failure was sudden, with no prior warning signs or gradual degradation. A sudden and total loss of power steering assist while driving at any speed constitutes a serious and unreasonable safety risk, as it dramatically increases the force required to steer and can cause loss of vehicle control. A review of mk7 Gti owner forums and communities reveals this is a recurring and documented issue among this vehicle population, suggesting a systemic defect in the steering rack assembly used in this model. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate whether a safety defect exists in the 2016 Volkswagen Gti steering system that warrants a recall and manufacturer-funded remedy.

3 Steering problem of the 2022 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 10/23/2025

At random times, sometimes at first start, sometimes after its parked and started again, vehicle alerts to below errors: travel assist is currently not available park distance control rear traffic alert is currently not available vw has replaced one steering wheel and did some software adjustments but errors are back. Its more noticeable in colder weather.

4 Steering problem of the 2024 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 02/14/2025

Travel assist is disabled which includes adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist. The warning lights flash on and off, sometimes multiple times a second, sounding a loud beeping each time. It is triggered at engine start and persists through all speeds. I have experienced it 0-70 mph. The flashing lights and associated rapid beeping indicating the failure is extremely distracting while driving. Warning lights and warning sounds are designed to alert the driver to a potential safety issue so ignoring the lights and sounds is dangerous in the event it is a different caution/warning. However, also not ignoring it is dangerous because of the frequency of the warnings which causes the driver to look away from the road. After speaking with the maintenance department at my vw dealership, they indicated that this is a widely known problem that is remedied only with the replacement of the steering wheel. There are several other sensors that are triggered by the same issue I was told by the maintenance department. They are uncertain at this time if it impacts the airbag system which is another potential safety concern. The steering wheel can only be ordered after inspection by the maintenance department and there is shortage and/or back order of the part to fix the problem.

5 Steering problem of the 2022 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/05/2024

The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen Gti. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact attempted to make a left and the contact noticed that the travel assist feature became inoperable. The contact stated the adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist would inadvertently completely shut off. The contact also stated that the steering wheel would inadvertently make a left turn to ongoing traffic and the contact had to forcefully to the right which made the vehicle difficult to control with no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact was informed by the dealer that the contact would be on a waitlist for a loaner vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 9,000.

6 Steering problem of the 2014 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/10/2023

I noticed a common problem among mk6 Gti owners of the steering wheel messing up, causing many issues such as broken airbags, the horn not work, cruise control stopped, etc. , and since I have the issue (air bag symbol, horn, no cruise control) as well I was wondering what could be done. This happened after a near-accident/close call and when I tried to honk it didnt work. It could've been for any situation and a car horn is very important. That on top of the fact that if I did crash there was a risk of me not even having an air bag. Not to mention the countless inconvenient long drices with no cruise control. I checked the wiring and the wheel/horn is connected properly, and everything else on the dasg works fine. The car has been in a minor accident before and I did take it to a vw dealership for mechanical and body work, so the car should've been fine had they fixed the issue, but the problem is I had zero idea about the recall and I'm assuming they didnt bother to check since I didnt mention, and so the issue was hidden away. I did in fact however call the dealership and call to ask if they perhaps incorrectly ordered a wrong oart or something, but they assured me that the car was handled to their best extent. I doubt fixing the issue would have been a bother, so they wouldve done it had they know. I'm 99% sure this is the recall affecting my car, and I sure would like some help. Thank you.

7 Steering problem of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/15/2023

The contact owns a 2015 Volkswagen Gti. The contact stated that upon shifting the vehicle into park, a message displayed reading "please place the vehicle in park," failing to recognize that the shifter was already in the parked position. The contact also stated that the failure prevents the doors from being locked either manually or via the keyfob. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 18v464000 (steering, electrical system), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000.

9 Steering problem of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/10/2021

Weird rattle sounds coming from the steering column. Supposed to be a clock spring issue. This issue is persistent on a lot of vw models, but unfortunately my car is not under recall.

10 Steering problem of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 01/14/2020

Error. Service vehicle. Only leave vehicle in p position.

11 Steering problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/01/2019

A number of warning lights come on when the car is turned on and sound alarms come on and off while driving. The steering wheel moves on its own at times and the speedometer does not work. I took the car to my local vw dealer located in countryside IL (autobarn) knowing that there is a recall on the abs system. The dealer explained that the abs module was not working and needed replacement ($2,400) parts and labor and that the recall did not cover what is wrong with the part.

12 Steering problem of the 2016 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 10/30/2019

Loose power steering suddenly in the middle of driving ,making it hard to drive . . . Sudden loss happens about 15 mins into driving . . . Every time , it does not return until car is turned of and turned back on , then repeats with in 10 -15 mins you loose power steering or when turning , many vw forums show this has happened to hundreds of cars possibly 1000s . . . When you take it to a dealer and they start it they say their diagnostics are showing no dct codes because car recycles and looks clearly although they know as they stated there is a problem and I will need new epas ( steering rack ) 2900$ but vowa got dearlership down to 1900 . . . My problem is on the forums you will see that this happens still with many 2016s and other years . . And it's scary to loose your power steering especially if you are not that strong . . . And vw states they know there's a problem but are still charging huge amounts of money for an entire new rack when they even say they can't figure out problem but it's clearly there and they are aware of it . . . Both Volkswagen of America and the dealership know of many problems occurring with an internal failure in the electrical steering rack ( as said by vw ver batem ).

13 Steering problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/16/2019

Abs code 16352 present. Car lost consistent electronic steering assistance making for varying steering wheel resistance during turning. Most dash information (speed, fuel gauge, etc. ) fluctuated. This issue needs to be addressed for all vw vehicles with abs control module issues, not just some. I brought this to the attention of vw and was told that the specific fault I threw was not covered (under existing recalls) even though all abs control module issues result in eventual failure of dash cluster as well as obvious safety concerns (which is exactly what happened resulting in ongoing costly shop visits).

14 Steering problem of the 2019 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 06/14/2019

2019 manual transmission Gti stalling when coming to a stop with foot on clutch. Started happening two days after purchase on 6/02/2019, after approximately 600 miles on vehicle I did not experience stalling. Vehicle now has approximately 2100 miles, and I have experienced the stalling multiple times over the past two days. It happens more often after driving the car spiritedly, and I can consistently get the car to have the issue when driving spiritedly. Happens at random during normal driving. Vehicle also loses electronically assisted power steering during fault.

15 Steering problem of the 2019 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 05/11/2019

Car is at 3500 miles, bought new from dealer. Car is manual transmission. Car has been fine until 5/11/19. While stuck in highway traffic, the car stalled with the clutch depressed. 10 minutes after the incident, this time off the highway, the car stalled with the clutch depressed again when I was stopping at a stop sign. In case #1) I was in 1st gear. The stall was very smooth and not noticed by passengers (I noticed it due to tachometer falling to 0). The clutch was %100 depressed #2) I was in 3rd or 4th gears. I was slowing down for a stop sign. When I came to a stop, the car stalled. I was alert due to the first incident and made sure to take note of what happened. The clutch was once again depressed. In both cases, the car stalled and left me without the ability to accelerate or steer. Luckily the problem happened while stopping and not at high speeds.

17 Steering problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/08/2017

My vehicle has experienced exactly what NHTSA campaign # 16v913000 and it is the model and year as listed in the campaign. With ignition on and while driving all of a sudden 4-5-possibly 6 lights come on my dashboard a chime starts dinging and the abs, esc, airbag, epc, barke pedal lights illuminate on dash along with either the speedo or tachometer start jumping. Vehicle can be stationary or driving but vehicle must be running.

18 Steering problem of the 2010 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 06/06/2017

Could not turn the wheel at all, steering was out. The voice command came on saying get assistance immediately. This was repeated over and over. Turned vehicle off, re-started and it was now working. I drove to a shop they said this does happen with this year maybe once a year.

19 Steering problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 01/02/2017

Vehicle has failed abs module, as diagnosed by mechanic. Abs light is on and brake light flashes, as to be expected. While in motion, on either city street or freeway, vehicle randomly downshifts to first gear and is unable to switch back. Only way to get car working again is to turn car off and on, a dangerous proposition when you're on the freeway. In addition, power steering goes out and engine fault workshop! comes on after a few minutes in motion. Speedometer also randomly stops working while tachometer goes out of control. What begins as a simple brake problem is now an undriveable car. Have had to push car to side of the road several times because of this. Completely unsafe conditions to drive in.

20 Steering problem of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/14/2016

Power steering turns stick randomly at any speed, requiring me to turn off the engine and restart only to get the steering back to normal. Very scary as more effort has to be input I to the steering for it to work. Engine stalls and cuts out randomly especially on idle. Has caused several issues when driving.

21 Steering problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 09/09/2016

While driving the vehicle steering system became tight, abs and brake light came on as well as check engine, steering system malfunction, epc and stability control lights lit up on dash. Also, fuel gauge would drop to empty and speedometer went to zero miles per hour while the car was in motion. This happened on a city street going straight or turning.

22 Steering problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/19/2016

Abs module failure at 88k miles. Multiple fault codes presents with constant beeping and an error message reading " engine fault! workshop! in the heads up display (epc, emergency brake, electronic steering assist off, traction control off fault codes). This is a safety feature failure that can result in loss of power steering, antilock braking system functionality, and traction control at the same time. The failure of this module represents a serious danger to occupants in the vehicle as the safety features are disabled due to the failure of this crucial part. This can happen at any speed while driving/turning.

23 Steering problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 03/23/2016

For several weeks, solid abs, solid traction control, and flashing "brake" lights would illuminate on the dashboard occasionally upon turning on the vehicle, accompanied by 3 audible beeps. Then, the abs, traction control, brake, epc, steering, and check engine lights began to come on while driving. Abs and traction control stay illuminated, while the epc, steering, check engine, and brake lights come on intermittently, accompanied by 3 audible beeps. The message "engine fault - workshop!" also shows up on the message display center in the dash. In addition, while the car is in motion, the speedometer will repeatedly alternate between the actual speed reading and a reading of 0 mph. When the speedometer drops to 0 mph, the engine rpms increase. Finally, the car sputters and bucks when attempting to accelerate rapidly, and steering feels a bit stiff. The dealer has indicated an internal fault in the abs control module.

24 Steering problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 04/11/2015

Driving at speed, the abs control module randomly fails, causing abs brakes to skid under hard braking. Lose of steering and control is the result. In addition the partial steering is affected. This is a lawsuit waiting to happen, I can not understand why Volkswagen of american does not replace faulty units as this can cause fatalities and injuries. Many people are replacing these units through non-certified technicians, or diy. This should be installed by a vw certified tech. Nhtsa should mandate a recall or someone could get seriously injured or die. There are so many cases of this floating around the internet forums and other social media. Does someone have to die for people to finally listen?????.

25 Steering problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 12/01/2014

Premature failure of electromechanical steering rack. Steering rack showing signs of wear and requires replacement within 5 yrs of purchase date and near 50,000 miles.

26 Steering problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 08/08/2014

On 8/8/2014, I turned on my car to go work. Once I turned on the ignition/engine, all warning lights (power steering, engine, electronics, abs, esp and braking) came on or flashing. After several attempts (3 times) to restart the car, the warning lights came on and off periodically. With a last restarting attempt that morning, all warnings lights went away and I drove off to work. In the middle of the way, all warning lights came back on again. This time, power steering, abs, speedometer, gas gauge, etc. All malfunctioned periodically during my drive. During the drive, I had no idea how fast I was driving or how much gas I really had and with no power steering and abs etc. I did arrive at work safely but not without some serious and perhaps dangerous maneuvers with a nonworking power steering, abs, and other electronic components. I took the car to a vw dealership in braintree MA the next morning. After a weekend of diagnosis and a random repair to the ignition switch, the dealership told me it was the abs control module fault and it needed a replacement. Since that vw dealership was not able to give me a precise diagnosis without repairing random parts of my car and had me paid for it, I took the car to another vw dealership in danvers MA. After hours of diagnosis, I got the same result that the abs control module is at fault. I had the dealership replaced the abs control module and paid thousands for the repair. Now the car is running fine. But knowing that the abs control module fault is very common among my model of the car at all mileage from research and talking with local mechanics, I want to make aware of this problem and the dangers behind a random failure in the abs control module that can cause failure of both electronic and mechanic components in the car which can lead to serious accidents, injuries, or even deaths without slightest warning on the road.

27 Steering problem of the 2011 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 04/15/2014

Loss of steering control at highway speeds when trying to change from one lane to another. Took it to the dealer. They found the same issue. They replaced: 1k1-423-055-mx steering and core return, 1k0-498-970-a repair set, 1k1-971-111-aj steering rack wiring harness they told me they had never seen anything like that before.

28 Steering problem of the 2009 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 11/13/2012

While pulling into a gas station after leaving a stop light, the steering wheel mounted buttons and lights (horn, steering wheel, etc) flickered off when turning. At that point, the buttons failed to work unless the wheel was turned almost to full lock clockwise. It took about a day of driving until the airbag light finally came on telling me there was a fault. Further investigation led to a faulty airbag clockspring. Numerous instances of people reporting similar failures on vw forums with similar model years. A research in part numbers show it's the same part number and version through various vw models including 2006-2013 jetta, golf, Gti, passat, tiguan, etc. Many stories of people with those cars having similar issues. This part should be redesigned and replaced in the affected vehicles since the driver's side airbag can fail to deploy in a crash even if the airbag fault light isn't always on.

29 Steering problem of the 2005 Volkswagen GTI

Failure Date: 02/05/2011

The hydraulically assisted steering rack on my car blew its seal(s) after 3 years and 14k miles. This is the second rack to fail on my car in 38k miles. The original was replaced under factory warranty at 23k miles, the second failure is being denied a claim due to out of warranty status.
