Engine Burning Oil problems of the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

The contact owns a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that the check engine light illuminated on the instrument panel. The spark plugs were changed on the vehicle. She took the vehicle to the dealer and they noticed that the sixth valve was losing pressure. The manufacturer recommended that the engine be replaced. The contact feels that the manufacturer should replace the engine because it was a safety issue. The current mileage with the new engine was 2,000 and the failure mileage with the old engine was 188,000. Updated 08/21/09. Due to the cylinder 5 failure, the engine is burning excessive amounts of oil, emitting smoke from the tailpipe. The engine had already been replaced, but performing poorly. Updated 08/26/09.

Excessive oil consumption (2. 5 quarts in 300 miles).

Check engine light (mli) came on. Checked engine oil and found to be nearly two quarts low. Refilled and called dealership. Delaership replaced O2 sensor - indicated that oil consumption of this amount was unusual and should be tracked. Several months later, check engine light came on, checked oil and was nearly two quarts low. Took to dealership, tweaked ecm settings and fixed the problem. New serice manager claims that high oil consumption is typical with this engine (notice - very different response from first encounter). Two days later, while at highway speed, the check engine light came back on. I have an apppoinment with dealer on Friday. Car is just out of warranty (2 years) and has only 15k miles on it.

This Jetta, like many other owners report, burns an excessive amount of oil. Contacted dealer, manufacturer. Burns 1 qt per 1000 miles. Ridiculous. The manufacter reports this is "normal". This is a cover-up for a bigger defect in this model.

My 2000 vw Jetta with 2. 0 liter engine is suffering same fate as many others, excessive oil consumption. I followed maintenance instructions by having my first oil change / servicing at approx. 5000 miles. At 8190, oil light flashed and I stopped at a gas station. . . Dipstick was dry. Added 2 full quarts of oil to bring back to normal. Vw has begun an oil consumption test on my car.

Oil light came on approximately 3000 miles after consumer had oil changed in vehicle. Private mechanic informed consumer that engine was burning oil, and was about ready to blow up. There was a gap in between pistons that were causing this defect. Please provide any additional information/attachments.

Vehicle has excessive oil consumption. Engine check light comes on. Dealer found nothing. Consumer then went to another dealer, who did oil consumption test, and after 6 visits found brake in sealing ring in engine.

Whenever driving engine would burn an excessive amount of oil. Have taken vehicle at least 2 times to dealership, and mechanic indicated that oil burning was perfectly normal for Jetta. No repairs were done to correct problem. There was gel-like buildup on the oil cap and dipstick due to antifreeze or moisture mounting within the engine. The consumer intends to pursue lemon law if defects were not corrected.

Jetta ran out of oil. Continuously burns oil at a rate at or about 1 to 1 and 1/2 quarts per 1000 miles. Dealer says problem is within the engine specs. From Volkswagen. No such specs. Can seem to be produced by either the dealer or the manufacturer. The dealer insists there is no problem and that I should expect to burn and replace 10 quarts of oil in between scheduled oil changes. Car produces black smoke and now has 13,500 miles on it.

I have been having trouble with oil consumption with my Volkswagen, Jetta 2000. I have followed all warranty scheduled checkups, and have taken care of teh car in accordance with the manufacturer specifications. Specifically, at one point, I discovered, between the warrranty checkups, that my car's, oil dip stick was absolutely dry. I reported this event to atamian Volkswagen who told me that "2000 Volkswagen are well known to consume oil". Since then I have undergone oil consumption tests. It has been determined that my car consumes oil at a rate of 1 quart every 1500 miles. Wv says that this complies with their specifications (the oil consumption rate is not stated in the owners manual).

Vehicle was purchased new in 2000. Vehicle ran low on oil at 1500 miles. Filed complaint about excessive oil consumption for a new vehicle. Vehicle now has 66,000 miles and burns one quart of oil every 1000 miles. This has happened from the day of purchase. Mechanic has stated that this is within specs, but may damage pollution control systems. I find numerous complaints on-line regarding this issue.

Excessive engine oil consumption. He car consumed approximately 1 qt of oil per 1500 mi. Taking into consideration this car had 8 miles when I lease it, and I drive under normal driving conditions this engine oil consumption, for me, is totally unreasonable. If I would not refill the engine oil between oil change intervals (5000 mi), the car would consume 74% of its total engine oil, easily burning its engine. At the dealer suggestion I ended up trading this car yet for another Jetta, also consuming oil.

My 2000 Jetta has began burning oil at a rate of 3/4 qt to 1 1/4 qt per 1000 miles. The dealer and Volkswagen state this is normal by their standards and they just continue to do oil consumption tests and tell us to come back. Why has there not been a recall. I have found numerous other similar complaints on the internet and I have never experienced this with any other new care that I have owned.

Vehicle consuming oil since car was bought. Dealer changed pistons at 15232 miles but car is still consuming oil at 33853 miles. Have returned 13 times to the dealer with this problem since June 2000 but manufacturer insisted consumer keep coming back for oil consumption tests regularly every 1000 miles. Consumer persuing court action at this time. Nlm.
