36 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2016

Tl the contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta. While attempting to start the vehicle, the abs control warning indicator illuminated continuously. The vehicle was taken to savannah Volkswagen (50 eisenhower dr, savannah, GA 31406, (912) 920-5455) where it was diagnosed that the abs control unit needed to be repaired. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 16v913000 (service brakes, hydraulic, electronic stability control). The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

37 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2016

Vw Jetta wolfsburg edition 2009. 1. I have taken my car auto repair shop over 5x over the times over the past year because the 'engine malfunction' light was going on/off intermittently - on for 3 hours then off, on for 2 days, off. Now the check engine light is permanently illuminated on the dashboard despite multiple engine auto repair services rendered. 2. The abs and eps/asr symbols illuminate and alarm goes off randomly without reason while I am driving 50-65mph on major nyc highways and/or when im driving 15-35 on a residential street. The eps/asr flashes continuously while sounding an alarm for 60 seconds or so, abs remains constant lit and will continue to do so until I am able to stop, turn of the engine, wait a minute, and then restart the car. On highway I have had to drive considerable distance with emergency lights flashing. 3. I was pulled over by a cop at night because one of my tail lights was out. I had no idea that was the case and would have never found out because the "light bulb!" warning was not on, and never came on. I got it fixed 2 days later, still no light bulb signal, my right taillight was replaced. About 2 weeks later the "light bulb!" icon illuminated, I tested and all the lights were working- but the 'lightbulb!' remained lit. About 2 weeks later the lightbulb was off. 4. The aux feature on my car is no longer accessible. Repair shop but they were unable to fix because vw speciality code/ system programming? 5. I have noticed it takes more effort to engage my brakes while driving. I have had my car brake pads replaced at least 2x over the past 6 years (I have driven about 20k miles). Also note - no symbol of emergency brake/ mechanic maintenance / worn brake pads/ automatic transmission/gearbox symbol were illuminated during this event (in February 2018) and none of these symbols had illuminated to this day (April 2018).

38 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/21/2015

I've had to replace the low beam headlights 3 times within 18 months and now both low beam headlights do not work even after replacing the bulbs. Vw has had recalls on other vehicles for a similar problem but this make and model was not included in previous recalls. Perhaps the scope of the problem is wider than originally thought.

39 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/19/2015

Driving home when exiting off to the hwy my Jetta will flash the abs, brake and esc lights while beeping. Took car to mechanic it was relayed that the abs module was bad. I refuse to take car to vw dealer because I already have issues with them about the erc valve and diesel fuel particulate filter (engine light constantly stays on) being 1 of the issues vw has admitted being faulty but still not doing anything about it. To get the abs fixed it's going to be over $2500 and the have the erc & diesel fuel particulate filter fixed is over $3000. Each of these items are faulty and should be taken care of by the dealer with a cent paid from my pocket. Both are life threatening faults that eventually could lead to my death or deaths of others. I have no choice as this is my sole source of transportation so I have to drive it. Even though vw admits fault they are doing nothing to help except for offering "consolation" gifts - none will cover cost to fix car and get myself and others out of danger. Vw needs to be held responsible.

40 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2015

The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that when the lock button was depressed on the key fobik, the front driver's side door failed to lock. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the locking mechanism failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 50,000. The VIN was unavailable.

41 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/23/2015

Started the car and after about 5 minutes of driving, the engine shuts off but all electrical systems apear to be working. No trouble/ indicator lights come on. This has happened on the interstate traveling 70, on a side street traveling 35, and sitting iddle at a stop light. Every time, the car will run for between 5-7 minutes than not restart for 5-7 minutes. At attempts to restart inside that 5 minute window after the engine stalls, there is no turning over, no clicking or anything. There is no temp issues, or low fuel issues. This has happened on a full tank and a half tank also.

42 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2015

The sun roof opened to the first tilt position without any action caused by the driver or passenger. It happened again on may 17 during a slow left turn in a shopping center. My concern is that it may be electrical in nature and may affect the door locks as well. On a previous occasion, I had difficulty opening the trunk and had to use my key to open the drivers side door.

43 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/08/2015

I was approaching a red light when suddenly the abs brake light came on, followed by every light on my dashboard. My car stalled and came to a complete stop. Fortunately I was in the right hand lane of a semi-busy street and was able to wait until my car started up again. Had I been on the freeway with my two small children in the backseat, I have no doubt that this would have caused a serious accident or death. I was told that I need to replace my complete abs system. I have approximately 72,000 miles on this car and have serviced it regularly. There is no reason for a part which affects the electrical system and safety of the driver should go out this soon unless it is a defective part - period!!! I know that hundreds have experienced the same problem as me as I have read their complaints online. Vw needs to immediately make the repairs necessary to correct this problem in order to make their vehicles safe to the public and before anyone is injured or dies. If vw ignores this problem, instead of dealing with repairs, vw will be dealing a class action suit. Please take note, vw.

44 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2015

I think there is an electrical problem with my car. Since the beginning of this yr 2015 my seats burnt a hole threw the seat and my clothes. I no longer use the heated seats cause I am afraid my car will catch on fire. Also my I have a light go out every time I replace a light. First a head light then a blinker light then a tail light next the licenses plate light and currently another front light. This has been over the last 6-8 mons.

45 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2015

The trunk lid of my 2009 vw Jetta opens unexpectedly. It has happened while driving and while it is parked. This problem is intermittent and it is difficult to predict when it will occur. I will sometimes find it open when I am ready to drive in the morning. Sometimes it will open immediately after starting the car. Once it opened while I was entering a freeway ramp. Luckily it has not yet happened while unattended during a rain or snowstorm ! yet the potential for danger is very real. Finding a place to pull over to close a trunk lid while my rear vision is blocked can be a very dangerous scenario -- not to mention the security issues an open trunk lid raises. The vw dealer has attempted two fixes, once under warranty and another attempt on March 6, 2015 cost me several hundred dollars. The last incident occurred just this afternoon as I was returning to my car from the bank lobby. I'm scheduled for a third visit to the dealer tomorrow afternoon. I really don't want to be a throwing any more money at a safety and quality issue that should not occur and hope that you will be able to help me. Thank you very much.

46 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/07/2015

The back door locks won't unlock, either from the outside or inside, with button or key. First it was the driver's side back door lock and now it is both back doors. I have contacted Volkswagen and their answer is "sorry for the problem. ".

47 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/26/2015

Was driving at 50mph car just shut off-rturned on hazard lights pulled over -waited -had to wait one-two minutes before car would start. This happened three additional time going between 30-50 mph same day took it right into vw shop. Shop diagnosed ingintion problem and replaced it.

48 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2014

2009 Jetta tdi sportwagen. During a panic stop to avoid an accident the abs and atc (traction control) dash indicator lights came on solid along with an alarm and the brake indicator light flashing on and off. During this panic stop both rear brakes locked. Turning the ignition off and on reset the indicator lights. Ten minutes later I attempted to duplicate the incident on a quiet side street by driving at 20 mph and hitting the brakes hard enough to engage the abs. Once again the indicator lights came on and alarm sounded. Dealer diagnosed problem as failure of the abs controller. Research on internet indicated that this is a common problem with 2009 Jettas with hundreds of similar occurrences. The part is $1750 plus labor to install brings total to $2200. The abs controller is not a wear item and should not be failing on a car which has 62,400 miles on it. The car has been dealer maintained and serviced since new. This was the first time the abs had been engaged other than during the winter on snow covered roads.

49 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2014

The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta. While the vehicle was idling and attempting to accelerate, the contact heard an abnormal noise and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was able to restart after several attempts. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 57,000.

50 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2014

Fuse f16 melted in engine fuse box disabling all right side lights and turn signals. This is a common complaint and also subject to recall on 2009 tiguans. This is the same problem, a hard-coated fuse should be installed via a recall.

51 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

Check engine light comes on frequently and when I take to dealer it is always a sensor problem I have also had some electrical issues replacing bulbs frequently. Also while driving the shifting lights will all light up prnds, sometimes there is a loss of power. Also one of the overhead light seems to have melted due to a high heat source of some kind.

52 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2014

Fuse box fuse socket # f16 melted causing right headlight, turn signal, city lights and right marker light to fail. Seeing numerous reports of the same thing on the web.

53 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2013

Passenger headlamps, passenger front turn signal and all rear turn signals stopped working. The right signal was not operational. Took car to dealer and they indicated the fuse box and the 30 amp fuse ( f16) under the hood had overheated and melted. They are charging me $580. 00 to replace the fuse box and fuse. When asked was this a defect and how can this situation be prevented, they said it has happened with other cars. It is something that happens and good thing I brought it in because other major damage to the car could have occurred. My concern is that this defect is a safety issue that could lead to serious consequences. Other Volkswagen vehicles have been recalled for this same issue (melted fuse box and fuses) and it is not clear why Volkswagen isn't extending a recall to all cars that exhibit the same defect.

54 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/02/2013

The electrical wire insulation of the passenger side head light is crumbling and falling off the wires, I noticed when I had to change the light bulb for the second time in less than a month. When I opened the access cover to replace it I saw pieces of the wire insulation all over inside the head light compartment. I'm very afraid and scared that my car will catch on fire due to that manufacturer deficiency of the electrical wire insulation. I sent one message to Volkswagen on America yesterday but they have not contacted me to get additional information or provide guidance. I took pictures with my iphone and will provide them upon request, my personal email is [xxx]please advice what can I do to have vw repair that deficiency at no cost to me. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

55 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2013

Lost passenger headlamp, passenger front turn signal and all rear turn signals. The fast signal only indicated that the right signal was not operational. We had a near rear collision while making a left turn into traffic. Upon investigation it was found that the 30 amp fuse (number f16) in the under hood fuse box was overheated and melted as well as the fuse socket was melted.

56 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/19/2013

Dashboard lights would not work when headlights were turned on, including right/left indicator lights. I brought the car into marten's vw service on 11/20/13 in bethesda MD. They reported the fuse box had started to melt and had to be replaced for $580. It is no longer under warranty. This seems to be a flaw that online research has shown. The vw technician said "it is a problem with these cars". He said the new fuse boxes are made differently now. Shouldn't this have been a recall item?.

57 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/05/2013

When pulling into work, my airbag light came on along with a message that said "airbag fault!" I have since had this diagnosed as a failed clock spring (located in the steering column), which vw will not replace because the car is over mileage and too old for any kind of goodwill replacement of the part. Since this is a critical safety system, I am disappointed that it failed on an effectively new car, when none of the 15-20 year old beaters I've driven have ever had a clock spring failure.

58 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2013

While traveling on rt 287 @ 10:30 pm all of sudden the lights on passenger side went out from front to back of vehicle (headlights, markers, blinkers, and brake light. And then the the other side went out also I found myself in the dark which is a safety concern when you have tractor trailers traveling around you at excessive speeds. Which I almost got hit. The next day everything was working again then it went off again. I can only drive this vehicle before sunset. ( there should be recall on this before someone gets killed as it almost happen to me. ) if you research this you will notice that others are having same issue.

59 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2013

I started my vehicle when I got a light bulb failure light on my dash, after investigating all affected bulbs which were all on the right side of the vehicle I looked at the fuses. Come to find out there are two spots in the fuse box that are 30 amps and were melted but not blown. The fuse box itself has been melted as well. I replaced the fuses and about one year later it happened again. I jiggled the fuses that were melted and the lights started to work again.

60 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2013

The fuse box melted causing failure to many of the vehicles functions. Had I been moving or in a crash - I would have been unable to unlock doors, open windows etc. They fuse box issues started with shorting out the headlights (another safety issue). Vw refuses to acknowledge the severity of this issue. I know this has happened with many other owners as well. I am very disappointed and concerned for my safety as well as others.

61 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/30/2013

The rear doors on my 2009 Volkswagen Jetta tdi don't lock - with the lock inside the door or the key fob. This is a major safety concern as I drive through the city everyday and anyone could just get in my car or rob me. I researched it online to try and solve the issue myself, but it seems like a difficult/expensive fix, and there are numerous posts online about other Jetta tdi's locks malfunctioning. Volkswagen has not issued a recall, but this seems to be a very common problem with their vehicles.

62 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/30/2013

Exterior right headlamp and right turn signal stopped working, discovered that fuse had melted in fuse box, fuse changed, worked for approximately 2 months then fuse blew again. Have changed fuses 4 times, but keeps going out.

63 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/04/2013

Rear driver side door will not lock. The door can not be locked with the remote or manually. This is a very serious safety issue. Have also noticed that the alarm will not beep when armed with the remote.

64 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2013

Seat belt warning light and chime come on and off randomly even when the seat belt is engaged. This occurs when the vehicle is both in motion and at a standstill.

65 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/18/2013

Since purchasing this vehicle, I have been having issues with the interior cabin light and the door locks on the driver side. I took it to the dealer to have it looked at and they told me this was a "known" problem with the door locks and if the door lock was not fixed, my doors would continue to lock and unlock on their own. It will cost $495 to fix. If this is a know issue, why doesn't vw fix it! there is an obvious safety factor if the doors can lock and unlock on their own!.

66 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2012

Door locks began to malfunction. Locks will not lock or release with key fob or door locking mechanism. This problems was identified by the service tech at the dealership as normal and a regular replacement for model years 2006-2010.

67 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2012

I had just left my vw dealership it have an unrelated issues looked at, I had a service that wed. I pulled out of the dealership drove about a mile and my car flashed so kind of warning. I turned around to go back to the dealership and it died. I was less than a mile away from getting on the interstate where I would have been traveling at 70 mph.

68 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/25/2012

We were driving on a two lane highway. The cruise control was set. Out of nowhere the car just quit. The gauges went to zero. The car didn't have power. We coasted until we found a clearing where we could pull off the road. We were able to apply the brakes to come to a complete stop. We were very lucky we were able to coast far enough to find a spot to pull off. There was not an emergency lane on the road. The closest town was 18 miles away. We put the car in park and tried to start it without any luck. After awhile it did turn back on and we were able to drive to the dealership.

69 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/12/2012

Melting fuse box. . . Lights on one side of car stop working. All of them. Very obvious fire danger. Fuse box has been replaced once and now needs to be replaced again after only 6 weeks.

70 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2012

The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The failure occurred three different times intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis. The technician was unable to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 48,000.
