There appears to be an issue with the transmission on the beetles. I took it to a local transmission repair shop and was told by the mechanic that there has been several of the transmission failures in his shop recently.

I took my vw diesel with an automatic dsg transmission for 90,000 mile service. It has been in the shop for over a month being diagnose with a transmission failure. The car has been serviced since new by auto bahn vw of forth worth. The first indicator of a problem was the speedometer jumping around.
I have a 2002 vw New Beetle with an automatic transmission that has failed with 220,000 miles on it. It began to slip and not down shift properly at 170,000 miles. It is a diesel and I expect the engine will continue to perform for another 3 to 400 thousand miles. Has vw been honest with the consumer about its track history of transmission failures in the New Beetle? please add my New Beetle to the list of automatic transmission complaints.

I purchased my vehicle from Volkswagen around August of 2008. My car began to show signs of transmission failure shortly after my check engine light came on, I took it to the dealer while under warranty and they stated it was nothing. It began to get worse but they assured me I just need to get my transmission serviced and I did. It began gradually from skipping gears to jumping into neutral and losing power while driving. The failure occurs very often now. I cannot drive my car for more than 15 minutes without being stranded on the side of the road for a short period. I noticed that as soon as the transmission warms up from driving, the transmission goes into neutral. I began doing some research into this problem and noticed that this is common problem with Volkswagen beetles transmission, which resulted in a recall. I have a 6 speed transmission and the same symptoms take place. We have looked for quotes on replacement of sensors, rebuilt transmissions, but we are still trying to figure out what it may be because transmission work is really expensive. Something needs to be done about this!!!.

Consumer complained about electrical problems; the speakers didn't work/windows kept going up and down, and transmission failed. The car was not even a one year old. The replaced transmission still performs poorly. The air bag light came on at least 3-4 times.
