3 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2024

The component that failed is in the official dealer report. I am not an expert however definitely an issue with electrical, engine, steering and acceleration meter. The car shakes/jolts aggressively. Once the shaking of the vehicle begins it accelerates with the breaks being pressed in under a red light and also under parked mode. In the red light case the vehicle then turns off the steering wheel freezes and all power comes off. The shaking/jolting takes place as I am driving as well. Which I then have to pull to the right to ensure my safety and others. This is major safety concern as it accelerates /jolts forward which can cause harm to pedestrians crossing the street, having me enter crossing traffic causing a major accident to myself and others. I have the brakes pressed in having no control of the vehicle. The vehicle turning off as I am driving is a major safety concern as I can cause an issue specially going on higher speed like freeways. The steering wheel comes into a complete freeze once the vehicle turns off as I’m operating the vehicle which then does not allow me to control the movement of the vehicle if I want to pull to the right away from traffic to avoid collisions. Once the car looses electricity and the steering wheel freezes I have to force my car to the right or a safe space. I then have to take my car key off the ignition and then turn it back on in hopes that it does turn on. No warning lamps have turned on. My dashboard is cleared with no lights. The dealer in downtown los angeles was informed of this issue, inspected and the report did come back reporting manufacturing issues. My vehicle did have a steering wheel recall before which I assumed was resolved as I did previously visit their center to ensure I was safe driving and leaving the dealer I trusted that the issue was resolved by their expert and experienced personnel. I am not sure or it’s unknown if this might have anything to do with the current issue I have.

4 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2023

The clock spring is out on the vehicle again.

5 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/13/2023

Hi , my 2014 Passat driven by a family member struck a parked truck. Luckily, nobody was hurt! the parked car was not occupied and the driver of the Passat was able to exit the vehicle unharmed. The speed was about 35 mph and the air bags deployed. This front collision resulted in a major fire that totally destroyed the car. The insurance company (progressive) is currently in the possession of the car. And one other important thing to note is that, about 2 years ago, this car was also involved in a different accident when it reared a car. That collision did not result in the deployment of the air bags but caused lots of damage. The radiator and lots of the plastic in the front needed replacement at that time. I don't recall the exact amount for the damage, but we ended up paying the full 2k deductible to get the car back.

7 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2022

To whom it may concern. Good afternoon. I really need your help on this. This particular vehicle has a defective def emission system that renders the car inoperable when the def sensors start acting up. Between 2022-2023, I took this vehicle to the Volkswagen dealership on numerous times, over ten different times. This vehicle was still protected under a factory emissions def extended warranty. The engine mounted diesel injection pump was changed by me when the Volkswagen dealer refused to honor the defective diesel injection pump. The def emissions systems has had numerous issues including shutting off on the freeway due to defective def sensors. Between 2022-2023 I was forced to keep the vehicle on for up to 96 hours costing me considerable expenses in fuel, and abnormally high mechanical wear and tear on my vehicle because I was unable to turn the vehicle off due to a Volkswagen diesel no-restart emissions issue that can only be repaired at the Volkswagen dealership. Vwoa has acted in extremely bad faith causing unnecessary hardship on their customers that erroneously purchased a Volkswagen Passat diesel with the def emission system. Volkswagen ripped me off by selling a defective vehicle, then refusing to honor their factory extended emissions warranty on the defective def systems. Please intervene. Jordan guerra 562-400-7738.

8 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2022

Check engine comes on 2014 vw Passat tdi 68,000 miles. Dealer code shows nox sensor is bad. This car is covered through 2024 and 120000 miles by vw extended emissions warranty due to diesel emissions fraud settlement with us government. Vw refusing to honor warranty and make repair.

9 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2022

The clocksping in the steering wheel is broken, but the part has been backordered for over a year. The broken clockspring makes the horn and buttons on the steering wheel unusable and the airbag will not deploy.

10 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/27/2022

I belive the clock spring has malfunctioned on my car, the air bag light won't go off and the horn does not work. This has put my safety at risk because twice last week a car almost side swiped me and I have no horn. I called the dealer and they said my particular model isn't covered under the recall but it says Volkswagen Passat models 2010-2014. I have not taken my car to the dealership yet. The airbag light and horn stopped working at the same time about a month ago and I have replace the the fuse and relay switch and the air bag light is still on and the horn still doesn't work.

11 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2022

Clock spring has failed. Te vehicle has been inspected by the service dealership department and confirmed the prognosis. The clock spring failure prevents the airbag from deploying in an accident. It also controls the electronic components in the steering wheel blinkers, horn etc they also do not work. Airbag light came on and as I went to honk my horn at another car my horn did not work creating a safety hazard and almost causing an accident. Luckily I slammed on my breaks and no one was behind me. Immediately notified the dealership service department of problem they confirmed the clock spring has failed and told me the car is still driveable but comes with hazardous safety issues that may prevent saving a life in the event of an accident. For example no horn to alert another car, no blinkers to safely change lanes, if in an accident airbags won’t deploy etc.

12 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/07/2022

The clock spring within the steering wheel has failed and is no longer functional. The airbag sensor warning light has come on. The horn no longer works, and I cannot warn drivers crossing over into my lane who may not see me in their blind spot. And as far as I understand, the main steering wheel airbag no longer works either. The idea that my main airbag system will not deploy in an event of accident is worrisome. I went to a dealership and informed them that its most likely a clock spring issue as I googled the issue; it’s quite common in their cars. They confirmed it for me, after taking a $139 ‘inspection’ fee which was no more than a tech scanning my car and checking the three main indicative problems I already reported to them. I was at about 120,090 miles at the time. I was informed that their clock spring warranty only covers up to 120,000 miles but was assured they will most likely be able to cover it after talking with the Volkswagen representative. It wasn’t covered. I was then told it would be another $600 to use their services, and the part would take a few weeks to come in. I later called the parts department as I did not want to pay an exorbitant labor fee; the inspection fee was insult enough. I was informed the parts department is five months backordered. So now, I’m either forced to pay for their service to get the part within a few weeks or wait five months from the parts department all the while driving with no horn or wheel airbag. I'm now forced to use their services, which run at a premium compared to normal mechanics, if I wish to have basic safety features on my car. This seems exploitative of the consumer on a safety problem that has persisted for years, and one Volkswagen is responsible for causing with their faulty manufacturing.

13 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2022

The recall listed on the previous page explains why visibility is so poor when low or high beams are on while driving, no matter what the weather conditions are. My safety, along with my family's safety, and oncoming traffic were put at risk due to such poor visibility. I don't have this problem with my other Volkswagen (2017 jetta). The other problem I encountered is with my steering wheel. I was turning and I heard what sounded like a crinkle type noise. It was rather brief so I didn't pay attention and then it made the sound again when I turned wheel in the opposite direction and again on my next turn. The following day I heard the same type of noise while turning in either direction and then the noise sounded like a spring breaking. I then noticed a light on my dash come on. The light was orange in color displaying a similar no seat belt wearing flash display. Once I was home I looked into what dash light meant and it had to do with an airbag malfunction. I went on to notice that none of my steering wheel functions worked nor did my horn. I researched possible recall involving steering wheel clock spring in a 2014 Passat and found it was indeed a recall. I purchased this car for my soon to be licensed son and he needs these recalls fixed as soon as possible in order to use car for his driving test in April. The nearest vw dealer is in green bay, WI which is a few hours away from my home. I was informed by a close friend that works for vw that recalls could be fixed by halbinsel Mazda in escanaba mi. My other vw is currently in storage and I am unable to get to it until spring time when the snow melts. This leaves me with the Passat with poor visibility and if I were to get in an accident the airbag wouldn't deploy because of clock spring recall nor can I warn anybody by honking my horn. Both recalls are putting myself, my loved ones and traffic at major safety risks. My vehicle is available for inspection, so matter can be resolved as soon as possible.

14 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2022

For the second time in the life of this 2104 vw Passat auto, the airbag clockspring, housed in the steering wheel has failed. The first date of service for this issue was 3/7/2019 and most recently was attempted on 2/22/2022. In both instances, the same symptoms occurred prior to the failure of this component. For a few days prior, there was a plastic crackling sound when turning the steering wheel. Then while backing out and turning the steering wheel, an audible snap/crack was heard, causing an inability to use the hands-free phone device, all steering wheel controls (including cruise control, volume, dashboard items), and an immediate lack of the car horn. Simultaneously, the air bag indicator light illuminated and the vehicle status stated "error: airbag". This error message appears each time the car is started. The inability to have a working car horn, steering wheel controls and driver airbag is a tremendous safety risk, in my opinion, so I ceased driving the car immediately and brought the vehicle to a local vw dealership for confirmation of the issue. The issue was reported, evaluated and confirmed to be needing part# 5k0953569al (air bag clockspring) on 2/22/2022. We were informed by (3) different vw dealerships and (2) private mechanics that there were over 1500 of these parts on backorder in February. Currently, as of 6/27/2022, there are twice as many backordered and the dealership service department that this car was purchased from says this has been the case for over (6) months. My vehicle is undrivable and will not pass upcoming inspection. It is unacceptable for vw corporation to not have a viable solution to this gross safety issue, while still putting new automobiles on the market, possibly with faulty parts and no foreseeable plan for those consumers, like me, that are in need of timely repairs. This vehicle is available for "inspection upon request" as it sits in the driveway, unusable.

15 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2022

Clock spring is broken, and no one has replacement parts. They have been backordered with Volkswagen for months. Air bag, horn, and steering wheel radio control do not work. Won't pass safety inspection.

16 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2022

I bought an extended warranty on this car and it does not cover esc light coming on . Car is burning oil. I’m afraid to drive due to the esc also car misfires hardly.

17 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2022

The clock spring on this vehicle has failed which controls the driver side airbag, horn and all other buttons on the steering wheel. Apparently, there are almost 5,000 people waiting for this part to fix their car which most are under extended warranties since vw knows they have an issue with this part. I have made numerous calls trying to get this part and there is no end in sight as to when my vw dealer can expect it to get my car fixed. I find this unacceptable, and it sounds like vw is not even manufacturing this part and it could be months or even years before this is resolved. I will not drive my car without a horn or airbag. I am sure many people are driving around with this issue.

18 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/30/2021

A faulty clockspring in the steering wheel failed so the driver air bag and the horn do not work. The car can’t pass a safety inspection. This is a faulty part that the NHTSA issued a recall for some years back (I believe in 2015). The replacement part has been back order for upwards of 9 months for 1000s of vws in the us. If the cars cannot pass a state safety inspection there should be a safety recall issued immediately.

19 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/26/2020

I bought this vehicle about a year and a half ago in arizona. It has only ever been serviced by volkwagen dealerships. Since having the car, I have had to have its turbo repaired, new fuel lines put in, several electronic parts, and finally on my way to school from boston to pittsburgh, my engine starts smoking. After this incident it went to minuteman Volkswagen just outside of boston, where the issue was still not able to be resolved. I then had to have the car shipped out of pocket to a volkwagen dealership in pittsburgh where a new electronics unit was put in. I was assured after this electronic unit was installed, my car would be back to normal, as this was not an engine issue covered under warranty. Today I receive a call informing me that the electronics unit was installed and it turns out that it is, in fact, an engine issue. I was in serious danger at the time my engine started smoking. My family has funds and are more than willing to take whatever steps necessary to resolve this issue. My mother died in a car accident in 2018 in a car advertising exceptional safety (just like this one). It has provided me with the opposite. I feel constantly unsafe in the vehicle, and the smoking engine was the tipping point for me and my family. This issue will be addressed.

20 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/23/2020

It was telling me in the message center that my rear left blinker was out I replaced it then my blinger brake light was out and tail light on the outter left wuater I replaced the whole assembly and still nothing but I'm not receiving anything in the message center.

21 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2019

Drains new battery overnight. . . Hear electric component running when opening driver side door gas smell in enclose environment (garage) although no leak found on the floor. Ongoing problem, it can go a couple of weeks without recharging battery, but suddenly is dead. . .

22 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2019

The problem below was first experienced when the car was stationary on a city street. The driver door fails to open after being exposed to cold temperatures of about 32f or less. The exterior handle behaves as usual, but does not disengage the latch located in the door jam. During these episodes, the interior handle has a unnatural amount of resistance, so much so that the operator will cease pulling on the handle in fear of damaging the components. Sometimes the door will regain it's normal operation after pressing the lock and unlock button multiple times on the interior drivers side panel. Locking and unlocking the car from the passenger's panel will not yield the same results. When it's executed from the passenger panel, the drivers door lock does not audibly engage and disengage. Please note, even after managing to open the door at the beginning of a trip, does not mean it will open when you arrive at your destination. I've experience this multiple times when departing my place of residence (did not leave until the door was 'fixed') and then arriving at work. This issue is well known in the more recent models of Volkswagen Passats as search engines yield a multitude of results. It was first noticed in the early months of 2019, did not persist over the summer, and began again in November of 2019.

Airbag clock spring broke while I was driving . Why wasn't my vehicle covered under recall for the airbag clock spring recall number 15v483000? obviously more vehicles are affected. My airbag and instrument controls do not work now due to this safety issue.

29 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2017

I drive a manual transmission. I have a 3 year old car with 30, 000 miles on it. The transmission jammed while the car was on the highway. It was due to a clutch that had broken into pieces and needed replacement. As a seasoned driver of manual cars, having driven ones with >100, 000 miles on them I have never faced such a dangerous and unexpected disintegration of the clutch in a car that has only 30, 000 miles on it. Keeping in mind the kind of tampering and mishandling that it would need to break a clutch I complained to vw about this and they have done nothing to help. Instead I am left with a heft bill to pay for the repairs, and, will probably need to buy a new car anyway as I would not endanger my life and that of my children driving a car with some serious engineering and/design issues that vw will not take responsibility for. The car also has electrical issues which I informed vw about; the parked car with the parking breaks on while turned off rolls off on the most gradual slopes and onto the street.

30 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2017

The contact owns a 2014 Volkswagen Passat. When the contact attempted to start the vehicle, the audio system failed. The dealer stated that the vehicle's warranty was expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 56,528.

31 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/23/2017

Stopped at intersection at green light idling when I went to put on the gas the car stalled. Restarted the car and would not work. Stuck in middle of the road with potential of causing other accidents. Vw said the problem was due to an update and after an update was done that I had to pay out of pocket for the car was fixed.

32 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2016

I was turning my steering wheel to park and heard a noise in the steering wheel that sounded like a wire stretching. Air bag light came on dashboard. Vehicle taken to vw dealer. Dealer states 'airbag clock spring' broken. A NHTSA recall exists for 2014 vw Passat, yet my vehicle is not included in it? NHTSA website states recall closed, yet my 2014 Passat has a defective clockspring. How can this be? dealer now wants $700 to repair and my life is in danger. Please reopen this recall of the 2014 vw clockspring issue since it is not complete and is putting lives at risk.

33 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/26/2016

Today I received an "important safety recall" from Volkswagen of America informing me that my vehicle is the subject of safety recall 23t3 - NHTSA: 16v171 relating to improperly assembled wire seals which can cause the malfunction indicator lamp (mil) to illuminate. Since the mil has recently illuminated in my vehicle I contacted naples Volkswagen in naples, florida to have my vehicle inspected/repaired per the safety recall. I was informed by the service writer, charles, that I would be charged $128. 00 to diagnose the problem. I thought that the manufacturer is responsible for repairing vehicles which are subject to a safety recall.

34 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/19/2016

The contact owns a 2014 Volkswagen Passat. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 16v171000 (electrical system); however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure.

35 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2016

I just recently purchased this 2014 vw Passat from Nissan and they did not reveal all the recalls on this vehicle! I'm really dissatisfied with the Nissan dealership as I feel this is being deceitful, not to mention very unsafe for me and my family. Dishonest!!!!! to say the least!.
