What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? defective primary engine water pump, yes. The original primary engine water pump system for a 2012 vw Tiguan 2. 0 was replaced under the vw extended warranty in 2020 by an authorized dealer as a the result of the class action suit---please see water pump class action and limited warranty extension bulletin issued by NHTSA. The replacement primary engine water pump system installed in 2020 has been found to be defective in March 2025 and the primary engine water pump requires replacement a second time -- without a warranty extension and less than five years from the date of service of the replacement under the water pump class action and limited warranty extension issued by NHTSA. Vw is still using defective primary engine water pump systems throughout the warranty period----does the NHTSA have any evidence that vw made modifications to the primary engine water pump system after the bulletin issued by NHTSA? was it a requirement that vw modify the primary engine water pump system? I have been informed that no changes were made to the vw primary engine water pump that was used to replace defective primary engine water pump systems as a result of the water pump class action and limited warranty extension. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? a defective primary engine water pump is a safety risk because it creates a potential for engine failure. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? the problem has been confirmed by an authorized vw dealer. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? unknown were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? indicator warning lights on dash--red.
The engine could not be started after 13 years and 103,000+ miles. I had to get the car towed to my garage at night, after several prior trips same day. There were no check engine lights or any other indicators. The engine had newer spark plugs, ignition coils and pcv valve installed as well as chain checked a year prior to this. Had a mobile mechanic come by and inspect the car. He determined that the engine has lost compression and that the oil was low. The spark plugs were soaked in gas because engine could not properly compress and ignite the fuel. After adding oil the problem did not go away. He performed the compression test and confirmed his suspicion about engine not being able to compress the fuel. The most likely cause was the timing chain issue but he could not inspect the chain to confirm due to difficulty of doing it. The engine valves were not moving as expected as well. He could not read any meaningful codes from the car computer. There were no electrical or starter issues, just that engine has lost compression. The car had regular oil changes, break fluid changes and tire rotations. Just two weeks prior to car breaking down it passed emissions test. As far as I know, these vehicles have had issues with timing chains stretching out and vw has sent out a recall about these issues a while back. I don't believe my vehicle was under this recall. This vehicle has had all recalls addressed. At this point I will have to get rid of the car because the cost to fix this issue will be the same or more than the car is worth.
I was accelerating on the highway when my engine started making a rattling sound and the check engine light came on. I took my car into a specialty european auto shop and they determined my timing chain and tensioner needed replacing. The price is going to be over $5k and there are only 113,763 miles. I’ve always taken my car to a vw dealership for scheduled maintenance. As others have mentioned I never received a notice about this problem earlier from vw.
The contact owns a 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan. The contact stated that the vehicle was experiencing excessive oil consumption. Additionally, while driving at 65 mph, the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road. The vehicle was able to restart. The check engine, epc, and tpms warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring while driving. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 135,000.
Ignition coil failed while on highway. Car hesitated , shook, and and slowed down. Created dangerous situation where we had to merge across to get off highway.
At 77k miles the engine's timing chain jumped a tooth or two at startup. This seems to have destroyed the engine. Prior to that: no problems. My dtc scanner said the cam timing was off. Vw wanted $25k to fix it after having it towed in. It sounded like rocks in a coffee can. It had just come from chicago to visit and my son was stranded. I had to put him on a train home. I now am putting in a used engine for $9500 & it is going to take several weeks. When I looked on the internet I see this has been described as "a ticking time bomb". (ref jalopnik. Com). There was a class action law suit, but I guess --- since we had not had an issue--- redress was over. Still. . . 77k miles.

I have faithfully taken my volkswagon Tiguan 2012 to a vw dealership every 10,000 miles, as recommended, so I would save the life of my engine, it would be considered a certified preowned vehicle and last me 10-15 years. My car wouldn't start Saturday morning 12/16/18 in my garage, I had just driven it the night before and parked in it my garage about 8pm. I had to have it towed to the vw dealership that has been servicing my vehicle. . They called me on 12/20/18 and told me my timing chain failed and that my engine had catastrophic damage and I needed a new engine which would be $9500. (?) really I then proceeded to call Volkswagen main headquarters. The gentleman took all of my information down, asked me what I think should happen and I told him I wanted help with repairing the engine. I paid a large price for this quality vehicle, had it serviced faithfully as instructed by vw and was never informed about a recal on this faulty tension chain failure and was never informed to have my timing chain replaced at 60,000 miles. It's only 6 years old for god's sake. He put me on hold, came back and told tell me he was so sorry there was nothing he could do because of the mileage of 138,000. (highway miles).
My vehicle lost power in the middle of an intersection. Later it was determined that my timing chain has "broken time" and needs to be replaced.
My car had two recalls and I brought it in as vw of America recommended and I did have oil change at the same time on 2/19/2016. I went on vacation and when I came back I notice the vehicle drove rougher then before this service. On Wednesday 03/02/2016, I was on the freeway and notice my car lost brake function, I try using emergency brake and try down shift nothing work. I feel bless that I manage to avoid two car accident and it would of been my fault. I manage to hit the curb to stop the vehicle. I shift my car to park and shut the engine right away. Lots of icons indicator was on (airbag, abs, engine. . . ) and I took a video of the dash. I then call my insurance had it towed back to the dealer service. Next morning I was told that it's going to cost me $3k+ to fix all the stuff they telling me the found and claim it has nothing to do with the recalls or oil changed they did, prior to service I had no problem with my vehicle. I have contacted vw America they said they would look into it and have called them a few time now and nothing word on what they going to do about it. I don't feel safe to get back in my vehicle and also not sure they ensure my vehicle is safe to operate plus they asking for $3k+ to address something clearing defective.
The coils keep going bad. Replaced all four coils twice with in a one year time frame. Two coils went bad, replaced them and then the other two would go bad. Went approx. Three months with no problems before they went bad.
Two separate failures of engine ignition coil. Vehicle all of a sudden ran rough and lacked power (4 cylinder). First incident christmas morning; dealer found non-functioning ignition coil and replaced -under warrantee. Some thirty days later similar problem. Dealer diagnosed another ignition coil failed. Consumer requested vw replace all four (4) coils at this time without charge. Vw provided replacements at no cost to owner.
The brakes first appeared to be sluggish as I was stopping for a light. Once the car finally stopped, the catalytic converter warning light began to flash and the engine died. I put the car in park, turned off the ignition, then turned it back on, and put the car into drive. The engine started, but the car shuddered. It drove less than a mile before the engine died again. I went through the same sequence in order to restart the car, but the engine kept dying. In all, it died five times in five miles, dying faster and shuddering harder upon restart. Now, this car is like new. It was bought brand new 2. 5 years ago and has less than 4000 miles on it. It had a clean inspection three months ago, and up until today never showed any mechanical problems. It has been in no collisions. The problems began suddenly without warning. And now the car barely functions. If I had been in fast-moving traffic, I could have been killed.
The contact owns a 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan. While driving at various speeds, the engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer. The contact was unsure about what part needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 8,949.
The car engine and power has shut down 5 times while driving. Four times on side streets as well as once on the highway. When this occurs the car must be placed into park to restart vehicle. The car looses all power except radio stays on. Highway incident the brakes had to be pumped. We have taken the car into the dealership to be fixed each time it has happened. First time we were told a computer update was needed. Second time the wiring harness and this third time the fuel pump. There are times it happened before we were able to et the car into the dealership. Second time it happened right after I pulled out of the dealership.
Several times, after starting my Tiguan and backing out of a parking space or driving out of my driveway within minutes of starting the engine, while in reverse or in drive, the car just turns off with it in gear, so then I have had to restart the engine to continue on with my travels. This appears to happen after the car has been running for awhile, then is turned off for about a half hour and then I go to drive it somewhere else, so it is warmed up. I have brought it to my local vw dealership two times now for this issue. The first time, they suggested replacing the fuel pump module, which we did do, however it is occurring again. I brought it back to vw and they can't seem to find out what is wrong with it, but have suggested replacing the fuel pump itself, for a mere $600 or more, which I have not opted to do yet, as I don't feel I should have to replace this costly part for something that seems to be a recurring issue with many Tiguan owners. I think Volkswagen needs to step up and issue a recall on these fuel pumps if that is the case. The vehicle is only 2 years old and I have read of several people complaining of the same issue with their Tiguans. It appears that there is something drastically wrong with these cars, whether it be the fuel pump or what not, but no one seems to know. This is a huge safety hazard as the vehicle just turns off while in drive or reverse in public places, hoping that someone can look into this issue and take the appropriate action to rectify it. . . . . Updated 02-28-14 . The consumer stated the problem was rectified and would like to withdraw her complaint. Updated 03/07/14.
While driving on highway going approximately 50 mph in a merging lane, car would not accelerate any further. Cars were speeding by and I could not accelerate. Epc light came on. Had to get off highway and have car towed to dealership.
While driving on highway going approximately 55 mph car would not accelerate any further. Cars were speeding by and I could not accelerate. Epc light came on. Had to get off the road and turn the vehicle off. Car has done this multiple times in the past year that I have owned it. Epc light resets after car sits off for a few minutes and problem goes away. Dealer says nothing they can do because the light goes off before it gets to the dealer. When this happens in the middle of the highway, it is very dangerous because you cant accelerate and move to a safe side of the road.
While slowly rolling to a stop the brakes locked up and did not engage. I had to apply severe force to the brake pedal. When I applied the force the brake pedal resisted and popped back twice before the vehicle finally stopped. Prior to this incident I have reported to vw and taken the vehicle in for issues with the transmission and the engine shaking. The car was returned to me 10 days prior to this incident. The two may or may not be related.
