general problems of the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan - part 1

2022 vw Tiguan, VIN [xxx], 54,953 mi. Infotainment screen went black; because the rearview camera image displays only on that screen, the backup camera is completely inoperative in reverse. Failure is constant. I replaced a blown #20 fuse and attempted a hard restart with no result. Xxx, Volkswagen of [xxx] [xxx]: tech found dtc in ecm stating no communication with 5f module (infotainment control unit); vw guided test plan directs replacement of the 5f module. Quoted $501. 54. Dealer stated this is a known issue and multiple customers there are waiting on the same backordered part. Vw has already recalled 2022 Tiguans for this component and this consequence. Campaign 22v-514 ([xxx]): infotainment memory module defect causing rearview camera image not to display, certified by vw as an fmvss 111 noncompliance. Campaign 25v-082: 2022-24 Tiguan camera control unit error, same loss of camera display. Nhtsa VIN lookup on xxx shows no open recalls; my vehicle was included in neither campaign and no remedy has ever been applied. My vehicle has the identical failure (same model year, platform, component, and loss of rear visibility) as the recalled population. The dealer's statement that multiple customers await the same part indicates the defect population extends beyond the recalled vins. I request NHTSA evaluate whether the scope of 22v-514 and 25v-082 was underinclusive and whether a recall query or scope expansion is warranted for uncovered 2022 Tiguans. My vehicle was parked on my worksite and when I can out to check a truck in. I noticed my windows looked tinted and when I went to investigate my vehicle was on fire or smoking badly and I closed the door and call [xxx]. This was a very traumatic experience for me considering I had only purchased the vehicle from the dealership on the 18th and had recently been training one of my kids for driving lessons. While I am grateful that me or my family where not physically injured it is unacceptable that both the manufacturer and dealership knowingly put both me and my family in harms way and I expect to be compensated for this preventable traumatic experience we've endured due to no fault of ours. Description of defect: the central mib3 infotainment touchscreen on my 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan has suffered a complete blackout and is entirely unresponsive. This system has already been repaired and replaced over three once under warranty for infotainment failures over three years ago. The issue has returned, causing a total loss of the backup camera, and safety menus controls. Safety risk involved: when the touchscreen fails or goes black, it causes an immediate loss of critical vehicle functions. I lose access to the backup camera display while reversing, and I am entirely unable to adjust vehicle safety assistance menus. This total loss of visibility and vehicle safety controls creates an immediate driving hazard and distraction.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? during a multipoint inspection that was earlier than advised due to multiple dashboard lights engaging, we were told that our car has an oil leak due from the timing covers and lower pan seal. They removed the oil separator and found value stem seals to be out towards the exhaust side creating an oil leak that stemmed from blown timing covers and the lower oil pan seal being the cause of the leak. The oil separator was noted as failed. This car has been brought in for every inspection and continued to have lights on post inspection that we were told regularly that they forgot just to turn off the lights but that the oil had been changed. In fact, our next oil change wasn't due until February 2027. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? our safety has been put at risk driving a car with a substantial oil leak and faulty components that only seem found after we are 8,000 over the warranty. In searching the internet, this oil valve and leak situation is common in 2022 Tiguans enough so that there are multiple threads and articles about it. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? the dealer confirmed that this is an ongoing issue with these cars and that volkwagen may be looking into doing a rebate for repairs. That doesn't fix the issue with the safety of the vehicle. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? we will be checking in with our insurance provider as well as an independent service center after dealing with heritage Volkswagen group due to our warranty. That warranty obviously provided us nothing for its cost or coverage. The lights were present and always brought in to be checked at the dealer we bought the car from. Again, we were always told that the lights didn't mean anything and they were left on after service accidentally.

I got this car in 2024 and it burns through oil. I am constantly replacing the oil and have had to have the seals replaced a couple of times. Every 200 to 300 miles I have to put oil in it. It’s too new of a car for that. I know a lot of other owners have had issues.

The overhead console suddenly dropped into the passenger compartment, making the vehicle dangerous to drive: the rear view mirror view was completely blocked and the now swinging console can hit the driver's face while driving. To avoid being hit, the driver has to hold the console up with one hand while driving with only one hand. The cause appears to be the failure of multiple plastic clips holding the overhead console in place. While this appears to be a known issue with vw, they have not recalled all of the affected vehicles.

Oil change and check engine light continuously appear. Have gotten oil changes during the prescribed timings and still after being within the timeframe of the oil change the sensor appears. The car has stalled while driving due to this and have on multiple occasions have had to buy oil to add to the vehicle even after getting a oil change at a dealership.

This is related to reference TSB 48-23-01. There is a rapid, unpredictable chime causes intense cognitive distraction while trying to navigate highway traffic. It is accompanied by warning messages covering navigation information and other displays on the dash. It is impossible to focus on driving the car and is incessant with no way to turn off. This is a safety hazard. I've almost been involved in several crashes due to the distraction and trying to manage the problem as it's occurring.

2022 Tiguan overhead consule just fell down hanging by wires. No glasses compartment so not sure what would cause the stress on it due to usage. Dealer said 2020 models had issue and have an extended warranty. The 2022 does not have any recall. Seems like design flaw vw should correct as issue comes up. If I was driving at the time. It would have hit me or passenger in the head. This is a safety concern. I have seen multiple posts where this has happened. Vw said I am out of warranty and will not do anything. It is 2022 and I have seen 2020 and 2021 models with owners posting same issue.

My overhead console has come lose. Vw will not fix under extended warranty. It is a known issue and letters weren’t sent out about a fix for my year model but I did not get one.

My vehicle has relatively low miles on it, it does not get driven very often. Once I had done the first oil change I had to pay for after the dealer covered maintenance warranty was over for the oil changes was when I started having the problems. Three separate times the low oil light came on the dash and I had to add oil to my engine, about a total of 3 quartz. I told the first dealer that I was having this issue and they didn’t believe what I was saying and didn’t want to check anything. I told them to do an oil consumption test but because I had having such a hard time with them I went to a different dealer to get it look at. Under dealer warranty, they conducted the oil consumption test and after 600 miles I was to bring it back. When they did a volume displacement test, they said there was metal shaving in my oil when they went to drain the oil and they had to change the engine and turbo. My car was around 45,200 miles when it was said to be replaced. Ever since they said they replaced it the engine is very noisy, they didn’t put enough oil in the engine and it doesn’t even look like they replaced the engine at all. None of the hoses has signs that they were removed or replaced, bolts and nuts not removed and the transmission bolts don’t look they have been removed from the engine or got a new seal. This engine is not reliable at all. Also the vehicle certification label that should be in my wheel well and in my owners manual is not there. I can not find it anywhere.

My 22 Volkswagen Tiguan could very well be apart of the class action lawsuit that is happening right now with oil consumption issues my vehicle only has 45,000 miles and is consuming 1 quart of oil every 1200 miles started noticing oil loss back in July.

Excessive oil consumption: I purchased this Tiguan 2022 back on [xxx] in florida and since I purchased it I have issues with this matter. I have reported my Tiguans consuming oil at a rate significantly higher than what's expected between oil changes and I was informed that is normal, yet I still did not get any resolution on this matter. My vw is leaking so much oil. I have been reading so much about vw and lots of unhappy people in regards to the bills they have to pay to fix oil leaks, pct valves, upper and lower oil pans. One mechanic told me he'd never own a vw because of this leaking oil issue. Due to the extent of people affected, I was hoping there would be an extended warranty issued for people owning faulty 2018 - 2023 vw's. I was told this would be the next place to make a complaint. My car is only 3 years old! of course I'm at 65k, just over the 50k warranty. Please consider urging vw to cover the costs associated with a well-known oil leak problem, please!.

I have had several incidents where the forward collision activated for no reason. I didn’t keep track of dates because I did t realize I would need to. Then I began having other issues: incident 1 June 7, 2025: I was driving down the road and lost all power. Car wouldn’t start back up. Got a jumpstart and didn’t have any issues like that after that for two months. Issue 2: July 3, 2025: infotainment center went completely black. Callled dealership and they told me it wasn’t under warranty. July 11, 2025: backup camera came on in reverse. August 3, 2025: backup camera came on while in reverse. August 15. 2025: backup camera came on in reverse. August 27, 2025: went to start car for in morning and it start, just made strange sounds along with clicking. Put on battery charger for 20 minutes, started it and let run for a few minutes. It was fine after that. August 27, 2025: displayed the welcome to Volkswagen three times today. Backup camera came on. August 28, 2025: sitting in my car without power on and the welcome to Volkswagen displayed on infotainment screen.

At around 60,000 miles my infotainment system started acting strange. The backup camera wouldn’t engage intermittently. After doing that for a couple months, it stopped working completely and is just a black screen. Several times randomly it has come on briefly to display the welcome to vw message but will do nothing more than that. I have no back up display.

The car will randomly jump, buck, engine accelerate . Even if I brake or put in park when engine on, it still bucks and feels like it wants to accelerate. Also when I want to accelerate and push on gas(like when I stop at stop sign and it’s my turn to go) it will randomly just buck and feels like it wants to stall, in middle of me trying to go into traffic . I’m afraid that if a person walks in front of my car( for example at a light or when I am waiting to turn, breaking, for someone crossing the street in front of my car) the car could bounce jump and hit them even when I break as I said, it jumps even while I break. I also am afraid because when I accelerate into traffic it also sometimes doesn’t accelerate and will pause and bounce…. Car easily could hit me!! I brought it to vw and they tried to tell me the repair would cost over $3000 I then brought it to another reputable repair shop and they thought it wasn’t related to what vw claimed they would fix. The other repair shop stated it to be computer/electrical issues which causes everything else to malfunction down the line and that they see this in many vw because of the heat here where we live (because vw did not reset computer system before checking electrical code again reason/malfunction. Vw only just went with whatever the computer system said without resetting it. Any ways guess I should also tell you when this happens an exclamation point comes up on dash board with some other initials, which I will send photo of. Iam afraid to drive it is in safe. And sometimes if I turn the car off and back on it’s like nothing is wrong with it!!! and it may not happen again for days !! but always happens eventually. This has been going on for on for about 6 months to 1 yr. Vw always blew me off until my warranty was up and now suddenly it’s an over $3000 issue, suddenly know what the problem is now! my 2nd opinion disagrees with them and told me to bring it to him when it happens but is closed each time it happens??.

My 2022 Tiguan burns excessive oil between oil changes and the check oil light comes on. I have to top it off between oil changes. I purchased in Nov 2023 and the light came on in less than 6 months. It has been brought to dealerships attention on mulitple ocassions however they are unable to find a problem or a solution. They have replaced my leak detection pump and a cover without results. I have also had on going issues with the travel assist light coming on almost daily. They replaced my steering wheel already without resolution as well. Currently there is a class action lawsuit for 2022 Tiguans for the excessive oil consumption issue so hopefully they will fnd a resolution soon. Here are some notes of dates of occurances 11/2023 purchased 5/15/24 oil light on 9/6/24 oil light on 10/31/25 oil change, steering wheel replaced 4/1/25 oil light on 6/16/25 oil changed 6/27/25 leak detection pump replaced 6/23/25 oil light on 1/13/26 oil change and oil leak from upper timing cover 3/18/26 oil light on.

Travel assist not available warning is showing multiple times when driving. I start the car, start driving and no issues. Then randomly the warning issues shows up along with an audible alert. It appears to be an issue with the steering wheel as several online posts indicate vw replaced the steering wheel to resolve the issue, only to have it show up again, several months later.

The car vibrates excessively when in drive or reverse and the brake is being held. Vibrations stop if car is put in neutral. Car also hesitates when driving. And is a major safety issue when driving. The vibration is also in my opinion a safety concern because it’s causing excessive wear and tear on other parts of the car. The dealership acknowledged that there’s excessive play or wear in the dogbone mount but refused to replace it because I was told that part should be bad because there’s less then 30k miles in the car. But I am still having the same problem with the vehicle and have had it in the dealership service department where they will keep the vehicle for a few days and then tell me they can’t find anything. The most recent visit to the dealership they never even test drove the vehicle and I even had the service rep sit in the loaner and then sit in my vehicle to feel the difference between the two which is extremely obvious and he refuses to acknowledge it.

- the sunroof control panel has gradually peeled away from the foam on the roof of the car and is now dangling. It’s distracting and unsafe while driving. This is clearly a defect and safety hazard as it’s fallen while I’m driving and hit me in the head. It’s blocking the rear view mirror from full visibility. - aside from it hitting me in the head as it’s fallen from the roof, it’s blocking by the rear view mirror entirely and blocking partial view out the windshield. I have had to use one hand to hold it up in place while driving. Multiple different kinds of tape have failed to hold it up and it continues to fall. - there are multiple posts and discussions in the Tiguan owner community that this is a known issue and has happened to many Tiguans. - it was briefly observed by a dealership but I was there for a much larger issue and they said they’d have to replace the entire panel. We did not do a full inspection or price quote at that time. I did reach out to vw corporate with photos and a description of the issue and they refused to help. - there were no warnings as this was not electrical or mechanical. The panel just peeled away from the ceiling and came apart at the seams. According to some research, perhaps heat can cause this defect to happen.

Ever since purchasing the car in 2021 I noticed it burns oil very quickly. Every time I would bring my car to my local body show before an oil change was do there was always no oil left. I finally brought the car back to vw and they told me it could be the shop was not using the right stuff which I knew was not true and they charged me for oil change and told me to come back if the problem continued. Sure enough 6 weeks later the oil light came on. I brought it back to vw and they told me the car has an engine oil consumption issue and they could keep the car from a week to 6 months.

This incident occurred [xxx] at about [xxx]. My family and I were returning to utah from an arizona vacation. We were heading north on [xxx], in between payson and benjamin when the sunroof shattered. The sunroof was not open nor had it been open during the entirety of the vacation. My fiancé and I were both watching the road and did not see any debris nor rocks fly up and hit the sunroof. Our only explanation is that it exploded. The vehicle is available for inspection on request. I am thankful that no one was hurt inside the vehicle, but this could have potentially hurt my child who was in the backseat during this. If the fabric that blocks the sunroof had been pulled back, I am 100% positive that all passengers in the car would have been injured by the glass shards. I am going to call the dealership tomorrow when they are open and plan to call the non emergency phone number for the police to file an incident report, if they allow it. Sos or emergency call feature malfunctioning. Requires deleting car from garage in vw connect app and reconnecting it. Functions well for a few weeks and goes out again. Dealership has been asking customers to replace an oem part. Customers need to pay for this out of pocket. Multiple cars have this issue.

Crack spontaneously appeared near vw logo on steering wheel. The crack is growing. Volkswagen dealership said the airbag and steering wheel plate cover need to be replaced but unwilling to cover under warranty. Steering wheel plate cover looks to be swollen and other visible areas show stress marks. Dealership is ordering replacement part to replace next week. Dealership did not say this is a safety concern, but I feel it is needs to be reported to the correct persons. No warning lights have occurred.

The air conditioning in my Tiguan failed while I was driving from michigan to florida through tennessee. I could hear the system running, but no air was coming out at all. The outside temperature was 94f and I had to drive with no ac with new (year and a half old)tiguan !!!!!!.

This random, but highly dangerous issue has never been able to be replicated by dealers or myself, but it’s extremely dangerous when it occurs. Occasionally, the car’s speakers will emit a max voltage popping sound that repeats like the sound of a helicopter’s rotors. This sound occurs seemingly at random, and it can happen while the car is moving or not. It’s occurred 6 times since I purchased the car in December 2022. The debilitating sound only stops once the car has been off and all of its systems powered down for about 5 minutes, making it impossible to operate. After some review of forums about this make and model, this is seemingly something that has been reported and never addressed in a recall or anything. Without being able to replicate it, it’s seemingly unable to be addressed by dealers, and I don’t think their knowledge of the car’s audio electronics preclude any sort of troubleshooting. It seems to occur when carplay is connected, but it’s created one of the scariest driving experiences and gives me constant fear that it will happen at random and with my young child in the car (which it has before). This needs to be investigated. I have video of three different instances, but the upload feature will not allow for those file types. Would like to follow up, if possible. Thank you.

Overhead console detached from the roof.

This is a 2022 volkswagon Tiguan. It is not my vehicle. I was hit on my bicycle by the driver of this vehicle on August 10, 2023. The driver turned left into me while I was proceeding straight. That piece in the photo on the hood impaled me and left me with a 2 larges puncture wounds in my thigh. It appears that there is something wrong with the material used on the hood of this vehicle since it was either my bike or clothing that I was wearing that cause the hood to collapse in this manner.

As I was placing my infant in his carseat on the rear passenger side, my husband hit the ignition button inside the car to start the a/c and shut the driver door. Since he was not in the driver's seat, the vehicle's engine did not turn on, however power to the radio and dash was on. I shut my son's door and tried to open the front passenger and driver doors - all were locked. My key fob would not unlock any of the doors or the trunk. The vw app would not unlock the doors because it said the ignition was running and it would not allow me to turn off the vehicle from the app. I also tried to remote start the car from my key fob and the app. Meanwhile, my 8 month old was in the car on a 95 degree day without air conditioning. We had to call 911 to pry the doors open. My son could have died if a police officer and tow truck were not already at the same rest stop where we were parked.

. The "travel assist not available" alert goes off intermittently while driving for over a year now, sometimes 15-20 times in the span of 10 minutes which also makes a loud noise that cannot be disabled and is causes me to be startled and distracted while driving - nearly resulting in wrecks multiple times. I have taken the car to the dealership many times to resolve this - only for them to tell me they "can't find the issue" and sending me off to drive an unsafe car. Finally on the last visit they discovered the steering column needs replaced but that is backorder and has no estimate for arrival. In addition to this - the entire "infotainment system" will stop working intermittently, sometimes for days at a time, meaning that the backup camera and driving modes cannot be adjusted at all because the screen is black and will not even power on. I have attempted to reset it as instructed with no success as there is not even power to the system. None of the safety features on the car work correctly or are able to be used - the lane/ travel assist features have not functioned properly since around 5,000 miles and everything else has gone downhill from there. I have attempted to resolve these issues with the dealership various times and have not once been presented with a resolution that actually solved the issue.

It does not accelerate when putting the gas petal all the way down at all or like a boom forward all of sudden. It's random when it's going to do it.

Oil light went on in may, 2023, at approximately 15k miles, then again in August 2023, at approximately 17,500 miles. Both times the oil was down 1 quart. We have been seeing smoke come out of the exhaust, intermittently. Vw service department did a oil consumption test which resulted in the car burning just under a quart of oil after 600 miles. They said the car is functioning normally, but if it burned over a 1/2 quart of oil, they would do something, but not sure what they would do. They have not addressed the "smoke coming out of the exhaust" issue.

I purchased this vehicle in June 2022 vw of orlando north florida. I had issues with salesperson [xxx] as he caught himself in lies. Anyway, my vehicle has 5,000 miles I keep in excellent condition I was going to detail and add some wheel options when I observed all 4 tires on this vehicle do not match. 3 are scorpions and 1 is pirelli. Which means unbeknownst to me I’ve been driving this new Tiguan and SUV with different tires. I was always aware especially vehicles awd should be fitted with the same tires. This is a violation, a safety hazard. I contacted vw of America, vw orlando and others I will take this incident complaint all the way to the president if I have to when I purchased this vehicle I was charged for ventilated front seats which was included in the car cost. A disclaimer read they are not installed even though there are buttons. The took off $200 I’m not a mathematician but a 2,000 option not connected with a $200 credit appears they made 1800 extra off me. I want this investigated, as a former law officer I know this is illegal and a very bad safety issue especially regarding the mismatched tires [xxx]. While driving, the speakers suddenly started blaring a persistent noise at full volume. It nearly caused me to run the car off the road. I had to cover my ears while trying to find a place to safely pull the car off the road all while trying to plug my ears. Turning off the radio didn't stop the noise. Turning off the car and opening the door didn't stop the noise either. The noise finally stopped after the car had been sitting turned off for about a minute. My ears were ringing when I got out of the car. All in all, an extremely unsafe situation in the middle of the highway. Searching online later, I came across forum posts of other drivers with the same car experiencing the same issue.
