Manual Transmission Problems of Volvo 850

Volvo 850 owners have reported 2 problems related to manual transmission (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Manual Transmission problem of the 1997 Volvo 850

Failure Date: 01/05/2002

When vehicle is shifted in to gear, the vehicle will go in that direction without consumer pushing clutch and gas in, vehicle does this all the time, contacted dealer, and they were not willing assist. When the consumer turned on the ignition, the vehicle moved in reverse, and driver door and fender were damaged, the dealer stated this happened because the manufacturer failed to install a safety switch on manual transmission.

2 Manual Transmission problem of the 1996 Volvo 850

Failure Date: 07/17/1999

Volvo's manual transmission does not in anyway provide for safety, there is no way of preventing the car from coming out of gear when not placed on a steep incline as Volvo has pointed out. The rear side mirrors project out far enough to trap an individual prohibiting them from freeing themselves, resulting in death. Side mirrors are designed in such a way that an individual will lose their life before the mirror breaks free. I know, my daughter was killed by the passenger side mirror in this way.
