My car is a hard top convertible. When I drive with the top down for a prolonged period of time my driver side door unlocks and a warning light that the door is open comes up on the dashboard. The door doesn't swing open but has loosened and you can feel it rattle. This only happens with the top down, never when the top is up. I have to generally slow down/pull over and then open and slam my door shut. It can be very scary when driving at high speeds. It seems to be happening more and more frequently these days.

Door opened on its own while driving. Three times this week. Door appears locked and warning illumination indicator does not recognize that door is open. Door cannot be locked when in this condition but it indicates that it is locked. Appears identical to issue in NHTSA campaign 19v849000.
The large coupe doors on this vehicle have a tendency to become unlatched while driving requiring the need to stop the vehicle and re-open and close the doors. This happens when doors are locked as well as unlocked. When this happens on the highway at high speeds, it is very dangerous and difficult to hold the door closed while making your way to the side of the road to correct the problem. This happens with no warning. There are recalls by Volvo for this exact issue on several other models but not the C70. I have reported this issue directly to Volvo customer service. I am also aware this is a widespread issue as I have have seen it identified by several other C70 owners on various Volvo owner internet forums.
The doors open when driving, first the passenger door opened about 3 months ago. The warning light comes on and stated that the door is open. The safety on the door keeps it from completely opening but the door is ajar just not completely opened. Last month it happened twice to the drivers door while in drive. I am aware that there is no recall but Volvo recalled 144,937 s60 sedans and v60 wagons from the 2011 through 2017 model years because their doors may open unexpectedly while the car is in motion. I had to pay $2000 to have this flaw fixed when in actuality it should have been a safety recall.
Drive side door opens unexpectedly while driving. This happens at city and highway speeds. The problem is with the door latch, and seems to be an identical issue that is covered in a recall for the Volvo s60 and v60. It should be noted that the C70 is the convertible version of the s60. Since this is a safety issue, the existing recall for the s60 should be extended to the C70.
We sometimes have difficulty when opening and closing the driver's door. Also, on several occasions when driving a warning light came on indicating the doors were ajar. We were on a highway when it happened. It seems to be related to an issue with the door latch. We were told by the dealer that there was a door latch recall on other Volvo vehicles, but not the C70.
When driving on the highway, the driver window opened slightly and the car displayed a warning light of door open. I had to pull to the shoulder to close and lock the door. On my return trip, I closed and locked the door but after an hour of highway driving, the same thing occurred. I am taking this to the dealer today but wonder if this should be included in the recall of faulty door latches on the s60 and xc60 models.
My 2008 Volvoc70 passenger door opens while driving on highways. Was operating at 65 mph. Purchased car used September 1999. Happened once before, but thought I didnt lock this is definitely a safety issue.
I was driving on the highway tonight going about 50 mph (with the top up) when the passenger side door became ajar. The interior lights came on, the window slightly opened like it does when you normally open the door, and a warning came on saying the door was open. It did not fully open, but was completely unlatched, I had to reach over and hold it shut while driving until I found a safe place to pull over. This has happened multiple other times, too, though this was by far the scariest and could have caused a wreck. I have never had this happen in any other cars I have owned and it seems to be a very dangerous defect, and I see other folks have had similar complaints online,.
After driving and I had park my car doors would not open. I hit the unlock button but I could not open doors. I rolled down the window and tried to open from the outside but doors would not open. I continue to hit the unlock button but wouldn't open. I climb out the window and tried to open from the outside still would not open. So I climb back inside through the window and drove car home. When I got home and I hit the unlock button I was able to get out. This has happen a few times. I took it to the dealership and explain the problem but they said there was nothing wrong g with the car. This is an nconvenience because I never know when it will happen. The last time it happen was December 18 2020. I decided to look up this issue to see if other car owners have had this problem and decided to write a complaint.
My 2007 C70 stopped reading both of my key fobs at the same time. I was at walmart and when I tried to start the car it said key error try again. So I tried and I tried. Nothing. I called my roommate who came with my other key about 1 hour later. It was about 1:30 am by this time. The other key didn't work either. Also key error. My top is open and I have no choice but to leave my car exposed over night. I go back 9 hours later to try and start the car again. Nothing again. This time the key gets stuck in the ignition. I had to have the car towed to my house, and the top is still down . And neither key works. This is ridiculous that they can allow a key to be erased. It is very unsafe. I could have been in a situation in the parking lot where I needed to leave and wasn't able to leave. My life could have been at jeopardy.
My hardtop convertible headliner is held together with a string like cord. The string has broke for no reason near the passenger side back corner. This causes a problem because if I put the top down and then when I try and put the top back up the passenger side rear corner piece of the liner gets folded up and prevents me from putting the top back up . I have had previous convertibles and this is my second Volvo convertible and I have never had a liner being held in place like this or having this problem. My Volvo is a 2012 and only has 42,000 miles on it. Because of this I have not been able to use my convertible top and the pleasure of driving with the top down for almost a year because I am afraid the top will not go back up one of these times and my car will be left exposed to the elements around me at the time.
When driving at highway speeds with the top down, the "door open" warning and interior lights come on and the door opens slightly ajar. Can be either driver or passenger side. Locked or unlocked. Doors are securely closed beforehand. Having researched this extensively, I know it is also an issue for other Volvo owners. I have tried to lube the door latches as some have suggested, but this does not work. Volvo and their dealers have stated they have "never heard" of this happening before, much to my frustration. This is a serious safety issue. A car door should not pop open while driving at any speed let alone on a highway.
I have a 2012 C70, and the "door open" warning and interior lights come on and the door slumps slightly ajar (even the window drops like when you open the door). This happens driving at highway speeds. Can be either driver or passenger side. Doors are securely closed beforehand. I have also mastered the stop, lean and slam. It is so annoying and scary!.
While driving at highway speeds, passenger door suddenly comes unlatched. Doors are automatically locked when driving. The information system reports a door open, the interior lights flicker on and off with the door vibrating by the wind at 70 mph. Also, the window starts going up and down about a half inch like it would normally function when the door is opened for clearance. This has happened on a road trip, and was in a place where it was difficult to find a safe place to exit the highway, the door, after closing, appears to shut properly, and the lock seems to function. Then, when there is a bump or dip in the road, the door becomes unlatched again. This is very scary to have the door come unlatched for no reason at all. There was not a passenger on this trip, so it was not accidentally opened. There was a small dog with me, and she was terrified by the noise, and the window movement. I was terrified that my dog would go out the open door. There are other complaints of this happening to other owners, so it is not a rare occurrence. Volvo should issue a recall to repair the doors to prevent them from opening unexpectedly. Reference NHTSA id numbers 10680779 and 10616590.
Purchased new uniroyal tires for my car all have needed to be replaced in very short time tires suffer from rapid deflation for now reason. Tire dealer has blamed wheels air pressure ect . Three of the 4 wheels have be changed all have been inspected by a wheel repair service. There have never been a nail or road hazard involved. These tires simply do not preform correctly they loose pressure at any speed at any time. 12.
This car is a convertible. When the top is down and I hit a bump, the driver door pops open, door ajar message appears, and dome lights come on. Like the previous driver complaint, I am forced to pull over to re-close the door. I reported this to the dealer back in 2012. We looked to see if there were any active recalls. None then and none currently. Since then, the door pops open 50% of the time when the top is down. The car has never had structural damage to it. The local auto body shop recommended I post to this site. I agree with the previous post: "there are many examples of similar problems on the Volvo forums" suggesting a systemic issue. . Read more...

The passenger door randomly opens sometimes when the car is being driven. This seems to occur every couple of weeks, sometimes at highway speeds, sometimes at speeds around 30mph.
While driving on the interstate, the passenger door indicator illuminated signaling that the passenger door was open. There was only one person in the car (the driver) and could have caused a serious accident had the passenger door actually opened. This has been reported by a number of C70 owners on the swedespeed (Volvo forum) web site.

Drivers door opened on its own.
While driving either the passenger door or the driver door suddenly becomes unlatched even when locked and the information message system comes on saying passenger (or driver) door is open and cabin lights come on. I am required to pull over and resecure doors. This issue has escalated to a nearly daily occurance. This problem should be fixed by a recall as doors are not supposed to automatically come open on a 7 year old car that has never been in an accident. I have made an appt with the herb gordon Volvo dealer in silver spring MD for an assessment.
While driving normally on evenly paved roads my passenger door opens and a error message is displayed on my console. I have taken to the dealer who charged me $60. To check it on the computer but to no avail. The problem was not detected by the computer and the problem continues to exist.
The doors open while driving. Even if they are locked. The information system gives a message drivers door open or passenger door open and the interior lights come on while driving. This happened to me recently 4 times while driving from kent, ohio to naples, florida. The doors were firmly closed and locked and hours later came open by them self. I went to the Volvo dealer in bonita springs and spoke to brian gatzki the assistant service manager. He told me the problem was in a door actuator and they were aware of this problem and he claimed this is a wear and tear item costing around a $1000 to repair. I asked what wear and tear could cause the doors to electronically open while driving. He had no reply. I also explained that this is a very unsafe condition and if there isn't a recall, there should be. I called Volvo also on 12-11-14 and spoke to lisa who also gave me the run around. I feel this condition is a common problem with theses cars and is an accident waiting to happen, can cause injury or death and should be repaired by Volvo at no cost to all affected owners. Owners who have paid for this repair should be refunded. This is a safety problem caused by Volvo and should be repaired by Volvo.
Dash warning light indicating open drivers door came on. Pulled to shoulder to check. Applied brakes and door came open. Previously light came on, opened and closed door and light went out. When drivers door came open, the retractable top was open completely.
The car reduced the speed and now it stopped running because the etm is not working. I contacted Volvo and they said that the warranty is not covered because it has been over 10 years. I bought this car from a previous owner in October 2013 and therefore I was not aware of the problem. Now they want me to pay approximately $900 to fix it. They said the warranty started from the day the first car was bought which was August 25, 1999 but in my opinion it should be from the first time there was a problem encountered with the etm that caused Volvo to recall and buy the cars back. Volvo made approximately 300,000 cars and repaired and bought back around 165,000 cars. This means that other people are encountering the same problem. I was told by Volvo that the car I currently own the software was updated in north carolina. As I see it they neglected to change the throttle in the vehicle. This is a big safety issue because this car can cause my family to get in a car accident. The regional manager indicated that the car could not be fixed and that I had to pay for the labor and the parts. They are offering to give me a discount on the repairs but I feel they need to take care of a problem that was caused by the manufacturer. I understand that the discounts for labor and parts indicate that Volvo understand the safety concerns and the problems of the car but also they need to take care of the problem. I ask to speak to the regional manager and I was told by the customer service representative that I was not allowed. I left a message to him to see if we can resolve this issue.
