The car loses power, shuts off, and/or won't accelerate when you step on the gas without warning. Volvo has determined the etm's in these models to be defective but continue to be allowed to not take responsibility for their workmanship. They have not had to take financial responsibility for their accidents, incidents caused by their defective parts. The consumer who has bought the cars, trusting the Volvo names is being made to pay for trusting them. The put all of these restrictions in place to keep from fixing what they. Messed up initially. They just want to replace software, if your car breaks in time and you know about the recall. We, the consumer should not be allowed to be forced to take monetary responsibility for the parts, work, or the inconvenience to fix this issue. We like our cars and that should not be used against us. We haven't even addressed the responsibility for deaths and accidents connected with this defect, like Chevrolet.

15 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 1999 Volvo C70

Failure Date: 09/02/2005

Volvo C70 presented a problem with the engine revving and down by itself, and mostly noticeable while standing still at idle. I took the car to the dealer, and they informed me that they had to replace the electronic throttle module (etm and throttle) body along with some other parts. I paid and had the repairs completed. The dealer informed me that they put a new etm in, but that the etm light indicator on the dashboard came on, which was not the case when I brought the car in. They put a second one in and the light came off. I took possession of the car and drove to work. After work I drove home, and the etm light came on again. I thought the light was not a problem since I was told so by the dealer. A few months later while navigating the web I found a forum mentioning that Volvo has a problem with the etms. Several sites claim Volvo is trying to hide the problem and not taking sufficient actions to inform customers. Since light is still on now, I will take my car back to the dealer and fight with them, but wanted to inform NHTSA of my experience so far.

16 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2001 Volvo C70

Failure Date: 08/16/2005

Nhtsa #pe05041. I own a Volvo C70 with the 2. 3l hpt. On Tuesday, August 16th while driving, the check engine light iluminated. I then, after making a stop was going to proceed to the dealer to have the code checked. On my way there I went to pull out into traffic from a side lot and when I pressed down the accelerator virtually nothing happened. The car almost stalled pulling into fast moving traffic. It then recovered, and from that point on I noticed that the throttle response was very sluggish. The dealer could not look at the car on the 16th but looked at it on the 17th and found that the code indicated a throttle module failure. They then replaced the throttle module. It should be noted that my car although being a 2001 only has 26,000 miles on it and shows no sign of corrosion or mechanical obstruction of the thottle module. After reading reviews of other complaints I felt I should add mine as it could have turned out differently with such unpredictable performance. Also it may help determine if a manufactuing defect is the cause of such throttle module failures.
