I was driving and the engine shut off causing me to lose control of my vehicle as the power steering shut down. I was able to steer my vehicle with difficulty to the side of the road where it stopped. About one week later this happened again. This time I was coming out of a parking lot and had to aim my vehicle in a way to avoid hitting other vehicles. Both time, after a few minutes the car started right up and I was able to drive again. Last Friday, may 3, I pulled my vehicle over and when I stopped the vehicle shut down. This time it did not restart. The error message displayed on the dash was that the "steering was locked, try again. " after several attempts including jump starting the vehicle, which was unnecessary, the vehicle would not start. I had my vehicle towed to the nearest Volvo dealership and was told that the "steering column lock" had failed. The part needed to be replaced at a cost of over $830.

I was getting in my car with my two young children and the car would not start (turn steering wheel and try to start again). I tried multiple times, but it would not start. After 15 minutes, I decided it was too hot with my children outside so I went inside. I checked an hour later, the car would not start. My husband was able to start the car hours later after moving the steering column up and down quickly and harshly. This morning, I was getting in the car with my two young children, the car would not start (turn steering wheel and try to start again). I moved the steering column as suggested by my husband, the car would not start. Luckily we were home and were not stranded on the side of the road with two young children in the heat of summer.
My car would not start because there was a message indicating the steering wheel was locked, but, it was not locked. I had to tow the car to the shop. They reported a defective steering column lock module. I found this is a common problem for this cars which is totally unsafe and unacceptable.
The steering locked on our 2004. 5 Volvo S40 t5 as my wife and 6 week old daughter were backing out of our driveway under power. No errors were reported when the car started, but the wheel locked (and an error was displayed) after the car was in motion. She stopped the vehicle when she was unable to turn the wheel. She was then able to put the car into drive and move back to her previous position. Clearly a safety sensor did not do its job. Leading up to this event we have had occasional incidents where the steering wheel would not unlock after entering the key. Lightly moving the wheel side to side and repeated key entries would resolve the issue. A motor now runs in the steering column when trying to unlock the wheel. This is a different sound then we experienced when the issue could be resolved. I am very concerned about this incident because the lockup occurred while the vehicle was in motion. This could have resulted in a potentially fatal crash had it occurred on a sharp turn or on the freeway. Please investigate this critical safety issue. I have a video of the issue available if this will assist your investigation.
