The car has problems starting and takes a few tries before starting up. Have also had a problem where the car was in park with the parking brake engaged and the car was revving on its own. There have also been problems while the car has been slowing down on the freeway, specifically when the brakes are being engaged the car will attempt to move forward as though it is trying to push pass the fact that the brakes are being engaged. As well as the car will accelerate faster than the gas pedal is being pushed e. G when the gas pedal is slightly pushed the car will accelerate quickly as though the gas pedal was being pushed upon firmly.

Driving down the highway at 55 mph when instrument panel went completely blank I heard a sizzling noise behind the dash board. I lost the speedometer, gas gauge, light indicator, blinker indicators, all of the instruments you depend on while driving down the road. I immediately pulled over and shut the car off, it continued sizzling sounding like it was burning. After a few minutes I started the car and nothing on the instrument panel works, I turned on the flasher and limped to a local mechanic, as an elderly female this was very nerve racking as I did not know if my flashers were working nor what speed I was traveling. The mechanic told me that he knew exactly what it was something called the dim had went bad and that only a Volvo dealer could replace which will cost over $1800. He said I should feel lucky that the car had not caught fire as that was usually what happened in these situations and Volvo had ignored this problem for years so they would not have to spend money on a recall. This part is not something that is a wear and tear item it is faulty from the manufacturer yet they continue to charge people outrageous amounts to replace them. I now have to drive an unsafe car as I cant even tell if I have a working blinker over 40 miles to the nearest Volvo dealer, I am not sure what will happen after that as I do not have the money (social security) to fix something that Volvo should be repairing for free. I do not understand why this problem has not been recalled as I have researched and see this has been an issue with Volvo for many makes and model year cars not just 2011.

Vehicle loses power due to accelerator pedal low voltage/signal. This occurs in multiple situations. Safest is shortly after starting the car an engine light stating engine system urgent appears. Unsafe occurrence includes power loss while pedal is depresses such as on the highway with constant pressure or most severe when turning left through an intersection power is reduced to idle. If the vent occurs with the pedal repressed, power is reduced to idle momentarily (2-3 seconds) and after pumping the pedal several times it returns to normal. I have brought this vehicle several times to repair. Deal changed pedal, changed wiring connectors (also cleaned several times) and ultimately replaced engine computer. Problem still occurs and dealer does not know what else to do. Most recent occurrence was 27 Jan but this issues appears about every two months after repair and occurs daily once to problem returns.

Safety concern: 2007 Volvo S40 electronic throttle module failure - causing "reduced engine performance" message and vehicle (2007 Volvo S40) suddenly slows down while in motion, limps and cannot go higher speed. Had barely exited the freeway on 1/24/2017 and this happened as I was on ramp. Could be extremely dangerous if it happened 1 minute before when on freeway. Turned vehicle in right away to local Volvo dealership (which was luckily within 15 minutes) and they diagnosed it to be faulty electronic throttle module needing replacement. Mileage on car 129,000 miles. Wanted to report so this issue can be looked into for safety concern and if the huge cost of replacement can be offset so owners can have peace of mind replacing it timely if there is a recommendation or bulletin (similar to timing belts etc. - which I don't believe there is currently for electronic throttle module).

My serpentine belt broke on 6/6/2014 and was replaced. On 6/20/2014 I was driving about 60mph on the interstate in chicago, IL when my vehicle stopped accelerating and eventually stopped. This nearly caused an accident on the interstate, but I was able to pull to the left shoulder before being struck. I had to have the vehicle towed to a shop where it was determined that when the serpentine belt broke, shards of that belt went in to the timing belt area. This is due to a flawed design on my make of Volvo. The timing cover is not sealed, allowing particles to enter this area causing severe damage and nearly causing an accident. I have 20 bent valves that now need to be replaced due to this design flaw. There is no technician service bulletin that would have notified mechanics to be aware of this potential problem when a serpentine belt breaks, so my mechanic would not have known to look for this, which would have prevented the almost $3,000 worth of damage. This caused my car to completely shut down in the middle of traffic, which could have resulted in not only my death, but potentially other fatalities. I have requested Volvo correct what has occurred due to their design flaw, and lack of public notification but they have not agreed to do so. This is a known concern at the local Volvo dealership level, as my mechanic contacted a local Volvo dealership in orland park, IL and was advised by the mechanic that they are seeing this issue on not only my model, but other Volvo models as well. This problem, if it is not known to mechanics, can and did cause a complete loss of power in the vehicle. This increases the risk of a crash or potential fatality. As you can tell, I have few miles on my vehicle for it being 6 years old, so there is no reason for having to replace 20 valves in the engine, other than due to the design flaw. Thank you so much for your time.

I purchased a Volvo for their reputation on safety. So why does our Volvo have an acceleration problem? I could be at a stop light and the car revs up to 2000 rpm's and starts to go with my foot on the brake with me almost hitting the car in front of me then when we first start up the car the brakes don't work? the car still rolls. What's going on with Volvo their making me think their just as bad as Toyota!.

The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 74,000.
Tl- the contact owns a 2000 Volvo S40. The contact stated with his foot on the brake pedal there was an increase in engine rpms and the vehicle lunged forward. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 130,000. Rvk.
I was pulling into my parking garage and my 2000 Volvo S40 began to accelerate on its own. It revved up to 3000 rpms and I had to press hard on the break for it to stop. I pulled over in the garage and placed the car in park. The car continued to rev. I stepped on the gas a couple of times and after about 4 minutes it returned to its normal operating rpm after which I was able to park the car.
The contact owns a 2006 Volvo S40. While driving approximately 5 mph and applying pressure to the brake pedal, the vehicle abnormally accelerated. The contact continued to apply pressure to the brake pedal and was able to stop the vehicle. The failure recurred two different times. The second time the failure recurred, the vehicle crashed into a concrete wall. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection yet the technician stated was unable to diagnose the failure. There were updates made to the vehicle computer but no further repairs. The contact stated that the failure had not recurred since the computer update but she did not feel safe driving the vehicle. The approximate failure mileage was 69,500. The VIN was not available. Updated 03/31/lj.
My 2001 Volvo S40 has accelerating on it's own, whether it is in park, drive or neutral mode. This has been happening on and off but most recently for the past two weeks. My mechanic has not been able to resolve the issue. Very dangerous situation.
As I accelerated to pass another car the overdrive got stuck. Even as I hit the brakes the car didn't stop. I put it in neutral and it started making a sound as if something was holding it back and would not stop. After approximately 5 minutes of hitting the brakes the overdrive finally let go. I called the Volvo and told them about the incident and they said it must be the computer and that I should just take the car to get it fixed. This could have caused a serious accident and even death. What is worse I had my granddaughter, who is just a toddler, in the back seat.

The contact owns a 2000 Volvo S40. While driving under wet conditions at 25 mph the vehicle began to accelerate. The driver was able to stop the vehicle. However, the engine continued to accelerate. Without accelerating the vehicle continued to move forward. In an attempt to park the vehicle, the engine began to redline and the driver turned the ignition off. The vehicle was towed to the dealer to diagnose the failure. The vehicle and failure mileage was 73,000.
Dashboard went crazy, fading in and out. All panels were unreadable, speedometer, radio, temperature gauge. Car accelerated on its own, without my foot on the pedal. Cd was shot into the backseat landing in my child safety seat. All of this occurred while driving on the highway. In all 3 instances the message indicator stated to not drive the car. I had the car towed to 2 different dealers. The first time they said it was the software and reinstalled. The second time, they replaced the alternator and the car was in the shop for over a week, the third time, the replace the cem module and radio. The the fourth time the car wouldn't read the key and had to be towed and they replaced the steering module. This car has been in the shop 3 times in less than 6 months for 3 electrical related issues the car only has 42,000 mile.
Vehicle: Volvo, S40 (year:2000), miles: 95,000 vehicle has problems in line with the other 360,000 recalled Volvos involving etm. Why is S40 not part of recall? last weekend vehicle had recurrence of continuing problem. Vehicle suddenly and violently down shifts at road and highway speeds. This has results in rapid slowing of vehicle and a massive rpm surge. This could result in a serious accident at highway speeds. Vehicle acts like it shifts into "safe" or "limp" mode, but there are no trouble lights that come on. Have replaced mass flow censor, which did not help. When it occurs, shutting vehicle off for a couple of minutes seems to "fix" the problem for awhile. In my opinion, this is a serious safety concern and appears related to the etm that has been the source of problems in other Volvo vehicles. Please add the S40 to the recall campaign.
: the contact stated the vehicle lost power while driving 50 mph and entered the limp home mode. The vehicle was taken to a private repair shop, who was unable to determine the problem. The manufacturer was also notified. There was a NHTSA recall #06v441000, which pertains to the vehicle speed control. The vehicle was not included in the recall due to the VIN.
The key has been sticking in my ignition when I park. This time when I could not get the key out, I restarted the car in park, of course with my foot on the brake. The car jumped into reverse and flew backwards out of my garage at a high rate of speed. It crossed the road and ended up knocking down a garage and totaling the car. The brakes were on as evidenced by the tire tread and skid marks. It was a bizarre occurrence and very frighteningly.
Consistent engine problems with 2001 Volvo S40 resulting in engine delays, idling, pausing, over heating and burning while on the freeway and at both accelerated (65 mph) and residential (35 mph) speeds.
: the contact stated the vehicle lost power at any speed during acceleration. There were no warnings prior to the failure. The vehicle was taken to the service dealer, who could not identify the cause of the problem.
Dealer/manufacturer claimed that no known problems existed, but NHTSA had complaint odi id 879358 since 7/1/2000. No safety defecgt listed.
Consumer put vehicle in drive and vehicle took off. Consumer hit a telephone pole while trying to avoid hitting another vehicle.
