2001 Volvo S40 suddenly starts accelerating on its own regardless of the speed I am travelling. It can happen at slow speeds or highway speeds. It happens regardless of whether the cruise control is on or off. It happens regardless of whether my foot is on the break or the accelerator. In other words, I can have my feet completely off both pedals and the car will accelerate. The only way to stop the car is by breaking extremely hard - and that barely stops the car. This is extremely dangerous. When I finally am able to stop the car and put in in park, the car accelerates even more. The care accelerates into the 7,000 to 8,000 rpm range.
I was driving when the car start to accelerated by itself, accel pedal went to the floor. I could not keep a car even by the hand brake, so as it was jumping ahead. Then the car began to blow black and white smoke out under the hood. Some how I turn off the engine, took the key and run away from the car in the middle of the traffic road. Green liquid under the car. It died on the road. Police came, the car towed. After several days of checkout : t/3. 8 checkout and replaced t-stat, temp sensor, t-stat housing gasket; bg coolant flush ; pcv; engine vent; engine mechanical; bg power steering; bg brake after a week I got the same--jumping, not stable, accel pedal goes to the floor. Internal short in cyl 3 and 2 coil and fouled sparkplugs t/1. 5 replaced coil pack for cyl 3 and 2 and replaced sparkplugs.
I have been waiting for over 1 month for a new alternator for my 2005 S40 Volvo. I cannot get an answer from anyone in Volvo why it is taking so long. Of course, I can not drive the car I have been told by Volvo that 139 other Volvo owners are in the same condition. Please help.
While driving the vehicle the rear of the vehicle swayed & there was a clunking sound that was heard. Upon inspection the rear coil springs were broken on both sides. While driving the car last week with just 130,000 miles the front end started clunking. Upon inspection the front coil springs were also found broken.
Car was serviced on 25-oct at ~49k miles. No computer updates were done to the vehicle. 12-Dec, I had new tires put on the car. 13-Dec the car reported "reduced engine performance" and oil light came on. Pulled over, stopped car, waited a few minutes and restarted with no problem/lights. Drove a few miles, same exact thing happened again. Then drove for ~45 minutes when the car reported something like a "system engine failure" and the check engine light came on. Car was sputtering with no response from the gas pedal. Was towed to my dealership. Sm informed me that the "main" computer had failed, "two other computers" had "stopped communicating" and the "throttle module" failed. He told me they could fix the car for ~$300 with computer upgrades. He didn't know if that would fix the throttle module as well. It was fixed in their opinion after they road tested it for ~7 miles. He said available computer upgrades are always applied at their dealership when the car is under warranty but never when the car is out of warranty unless there's a problem. Was told my extended warranty did not cover the upgrades and was charged ~$300. I asked if the upgrades could have been applied 25-oct since I was under warranty. He felt that they could have been, assuming the upgrades were available then but couldn't tell me if they were. Spoke with the sm at the dealership where I was on 25-oct and he said they never apply computer upgrades unless there's a problem with the car, warranty or not. Drove the car home on 13-Dec and noticed "electrical" issues. Drove the car on the morning of 14-Dec and a headlight went out and came back on later in the day. Car failed again that day in traffic. Filed a case with Volvo customer care. Dealership has cleaned the throttle module but problem persists. They ordered a new etm at ~$800. I was told that they will use the $300 as a 25% payment on the parts/labor for the etm replacement and there will be no additional cost to me.
2001 Volvo S40. When you start the car air blows hard inside the car even though the fan knob is on "0". Will not turn off, drive or park. Problem appeared all of a sudden 10 days ago and is persistent and consistent. Other owners of this model have identical issue, from Volvoforums. Com.
Recently purchased used 2000 Volvo S40 sedan. The horn is very difficult to operate, which I consider to be a dangerous safety problem. When I pointed this out to the service technician, he told me that it was a design flaw in the placement of the airbag module in the steering column.

Instrument panel was defective. Warning lights kept coming on. Also, engine check light comes on along with windshield wiper lights, and etc. Contacted dealer, and the dealer did not know what the problem was.
In bright sunlight the dashboard instruments are invisible, red speed indicator invisible to partially colorblind drivers.
