I was driving my 2004 Volvo S60. There were no adverse driving conditions, and I was driving normally. I went to put my S60 in park, and it would not go past neutral into either reverse or park. My S60 has a geartronic transmission (geartronic is essentially the brand name of the Volvo manumatic transmission. . Read more...

My 2006 Volvo S60 will not shift out of park when the vehicle is cold (after sitting outside overnight at temperatures below 45f). Depending on how cold it is, it takes from 5 to 20 minutes for the vehicle to warm enough that I can shift it into drive. The dealer is unhelpful: I left it overnight for them to check. Even though it would not shift for them, a service rep started it, not the technician so they would not do anything about it unless I take it back to them again.

2002 Volvo S60 - transmission clunks when engaging gear in drive. Problem is most noticeable when shifting from reverse. Hesitation to engagement can be up to 2 seconds, then engages very harshly producing the "clunking". Was told a software flash may correct issue but I am reluctant to spend $80 to discover it did not work. Vehicle started demonstrating problem at 80k miles when manually downshifting to first gear to come to a stop. Now has 114k miles and driven very carefully with foot hard on brake when shifting from reverse to drive. I no longer perform any sort of manual shifting when in forward motion.

2001 Volvo S60 t5
after about 30 miles of highway driving, I came to a stop due to traffic. When traffic started moving, I noticed jerking and hard shifting. The transmission service light came on and the car went into limp mode. I eventually had to have the car towed to the dealership where I was told that it needed a new transmission for 4000. 00. The 2001 S60 transmission issue is very common and should be replaced free of charge by Volvo.

On 12 Dec, 2008, my 2003 Volvo S60 stalled with no warning while traveling on a busy highway at 60 mph. I pulled to safety (vehicle was in "limp home" mode) and had the vehicle towed to the dealership (park place Volvo). Since the vehicle started right back up and presented no codes, I was told there was nothing wrong and given a bill for $418 (for tow and diagnostic check). Approx. 1 month later, vehicle presented same problem; it stalled, without warning, while driving. . . Creating a great safety risk for the second time. I had vehicle towed again to same dealership, and since vehicle started right back up with no codes, I was told there was nothing wrong. Dealership could not get vehicle to duplicate problem on either occasion. However, to appease me, dealership did replace accelerator pedal. . . Vehicle still presents same stalling issue, and intermittently goes into "limp home" mode for no apparent reason. This will undoubtedly cause a serious accident, as it is obvious, from the numerous complaints on this issue, that this is a mass defect.

I drive a 2001 Volvo S60. I purchased it new in 2002. It has a total of 35,000 miles. I drive the car short distances and in town only. It started giving me problems a couple of weeks ago with jerking forward. The "transmission required" "check engine" messages came on today. I immediately brought it to a Volvo dealer who could not explain to me what the problem is until after they perform a diagnostic test at a cost $122. 00. I felt that I had no other recourse but to leave it with them. I don't feel that my car should experience transmission problems since the car is only 7 years old and is not driven for long distances. Thank you for your consideration.
2007 Volvo S60: when in drive, vehicle would roll on an incline. Would have to keep foot on brake, slight pressure on gas or put in park. When told above, cust states veh rolls back on an incline when in drive road: test ck transmission--performing to factory specs, transmission is not supposed to lock at idle, rollback is normal.

I had slight jerking and slipping during recent two years. But since this month (Aug. 2008), my 2001 S60 t5 becomes worse with frequent jerking and slipping during traffic and accelerating from a stop. Driving with those symptoms is very dangerous. Visited dealer shop for several times, the suggestions were always new transmission replacement which cost over $4,000. I was also told many S60 2001 and later have the similar problems. I think the Volvo builder must be responsible for this safety related bad part manufacturer issue.
2001 Volvo S60 2. 4t bought as Volvo certified pre-owned from dealer with 47,000 miles. Now has 69,170 and need new transmission, right axle, right cv joint, rear seal, motor mounts. Had complained about poor acceleration, rough shifting, rolling in park before extended warranty ran out and dealer did not fix, now out of warranty, they acknowledge the problems exists and I will have to pay to fix.
Faulty Volvo S60 transmission the car has no gas/power then suddenly jerks into 1st and 2nd gear. There was trouble early on while it was under warranty but the dealership downplayed the problem and didn't tell me it had anything to do with the transmission.
When accelerating from a stop, the transmission seems to skip a gear. This results in uneven acceleration, making merging into traffic hazardous. It only happens sporadically.
Volvo S60 2004, 9000 miles, automatic transmission. While leaving a traffic light (accelerating) and at a speed of about 20 mph the engine suddenly stopped. No power for steering and brakes. What could happen if the defect occurred on the highway? the car was serviced at Volvo garage according to maintenance program (6000 miles). Now they said that the defect was due to the air admission system, which was found to be dirty.
We are a 2 Volvo family (having purchased them "pre-certified from Volvo 2 and 3 years ago respectively). Both cars (2002 S60 & 2001 cross country) have had to have their transmissions replaced since purchase - mine once (so far) and my husband's three times - all before 55,000 miles. I went online and found literally hundreds of complaints on defective Volvo transmissions: all Volvo models - from 2001 through 2006 and mileage ranging from 20,000 to 60,000. Why has Volvo USA not been taken to task on these defective factory installed transmissions and made to stand behind the manufacture of their cars?.
The angel gear failed (also known as the bevel gear) causing a loss of the awd system. Symptoms include excessive torque steer and excessive front wheel spin. >$2300 repair. Dealer indicated that there was no specific reason for the failure and that there was no preventive maintenance on this part.
2003 Volvo S60. Vehicle stalled at least 6 or 7 times at various speeds. Transmission was replaced due to stalling.
The transmission of my S60 inadvertently mis-shifts at a variety of speeds. The problem happens at low speeds when backing off between gears and feels like it up shifts at an inappropriate time and speeds up. Other times the transmission will mis-shift upon acceleration causing high revs, with no power. Talked with Volvo several times and first service visit paid $100 for a software upgrade that did nothing. Next time to service they checked the servos and stated they were ok. Last trip to service addressed issue w/ service rep and requested to have it documented. Service rep stated car had a 100k guarantee dismissed request. Car has 80k on it and problem seems to be increasing. Afraid it is a safety issue due to lack of control.
Transmission flare.
I have had many problems with the transmission, car will stall in traffic, car would not start at all. This car has been in service many many times. The problems persist. I have sent 9 emails to their head quarters since 12/5, no reply.
Vehicle continued to row when consumer removed foot from the accelerator pedal when driving up an incline. Dealer was notified, and they informed the consumer that was the normal characteristic of that vehicle.
For both our 2001 Volvo S60 2. 4t and our 2003 Volvo xc90 2. 5t awd there have been unsuccessful attempts to repair a transmission defect (essentially same transmission in both vehicles per Volvo tech support). Between 2nd and 3rd there is . Intermittent/unpredictable failure to engage 3rd in timely fashion with resultant loss of acceleration as vehicle is functionally in neutral with engine racing for 0. 5 to 2. 5 seconds. This is extremely dangerous especially when pulling on to a highway. We have experienced 2 near collisions (almost being struck from behind). Volvo tech support acknowledges a flaw in design causing servo fluid air lock in the 2001. A new transmission is scheduled to be replaced for our S60, but if the problem is still occuring in our 2003, will this correct the problem? the 2003 xc90 they say can be repaired with "upgraded software" (which is scheduled for that vehicle) but this remedy failed when performed on our 2001 S60. We have let the dealer know we feel both vehicles are unsafe with this problem and we are now stuck with them trying to remedy both glaring safety defects. We are not aware of a federally mandated recall to repair this acknowledged (safety) defect.

Vehicle with automatic transmission has a serious design flaw that results in a serious delay when decelerating rapidly. The delay makes it seem as though the throttle has "stuck" for 2-3 tenths of a second. The "r" is touted as a performance vehicle and this delay in throttle response is down right dangerous when the vehicle is driven hard. This delay occurs every time one decelerates quickly from full throttle. Volvo says it is "normal". .
While driving my Volvo 2002 S60 awd I experience what is referred to as an engine flare. While car shifts automatically from gear to gear the engine will race and the tachometer needle will jump. The car will lurch forward once the gear finally catches. This can happen when the car is cold or hot. It can occur at anytime and any gear. It has also happened while stepping on the brake. I have been experiencing this problem since Feb. 2002 and Volvo still has yet to fix it. I have made numerous calls to Volvo n. A. And the dealer vovloville of massapequa, NY. The dealer tells me that they are still waiting to hear from Volvo n. A. And Volvo n. A. Continues to tell me that they are looking into it but they never call me back with any information.
