In October 2018. While driving my 2012 Volvo ( 88,000 miles)the car started to hesitate in traffic then it stop. I had just exit the express highway on to a city street. There was no sensor lights or engine check light that came on at all. Tried to crank the car back up. The car would not start. Suddenly the oil light and the air bag light came on. A sears technical came out to jump start the car thinking it was my battery to take car to there shop. He check the oil because the light was on. The oil was fine not low. I had just had a oil change sept 2018. The car still would not start. I had to get a tow to a shop for foreign cars. My diagnosis engine locked up. The injectors 5 and 6 was wide open (hydro locking ) fuel had been leaking everywhere even in my oil. The price was $1400. 00 to repair.

4 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2005 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 10/01/2017

Angle/collar gear/sleeve, haldex awd. Hundreds of thousands of awd Volvos have this issue yet Volvo has never taken action or recalled part. This is just one of many issues thousands of Volvo's have. But the awd system non functioning due to stripped teeth caused by rust because of inadequate grease/lube etc. On thousands of vehicles ranging from their small sedans to SUV's should be something. They have even updated the angle gear/collar sleeve with one that has "hardened" teeth, but no recall on a part of the vehicle that is suppose to always function. A lot were lucky enough it happened while still under warranty. But getting stuck/stranded in snow because your vehicle is only 2 wheel drive when its suppose to be awd. I did not find out my awd did not work until I had gotten stuck in the snow. Turns out hundreds if not thousands of people had to find out this same way. I believe Volvo has just been lucky no one has died yet due to failed awd system. I am not certain about what conditions need to be met before a recall is done. This is just one of the issues with Volvo's. I am not sure on the exact date my awd system stopped working because driving on anything other than snow, or ice you cannot tell. But a simple search on the internet and hundreds if not thousands of people starting early as 2000's to most recent as 2019 having same issues, some more than once, and a few coming up with their own way of fixing Volvos issue. But photos can be found all over the web. Also Volvo sells these advertised as awd when in fact it is fwd all time, until front tires lose traction which only then do the rear wheels engage. Yet can break or malfunction even though they only ever come on 20-30% of the vehicles total miles driven. Not sure of awd definition but I always thought it stood for all wheel drive, not front wheel drive; all wheel drive when front wheels lose traction.

11 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2012 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 06/17/2012

This is the second occasion on which this defect has appeared, the prior incident happening in approximately March 2012, at a mileage of approximately 5000 miles. I have owned the car for just under six months. I live in a southeastern us state and travelled to my second home in florida. The car has been parked in florida fewer than 20 total days. On both of the last two occasions during which the vehicle was parked in florida, an animal was apparently able to climb deep into the underbody of the car and chew on wires controlling the dynamic traction stability control system, the antilock braking system, the cruise control system, and the Volvo city safety crash avoidance system. On both occasions, the internal car alert system detected the problem, alerted me, and Volvo agreed to cover the cost of the repairs, though today, on the second occasion, Volvo indicated they will not cover this form of damage in the future. I proposed to both my Volvo dealership and to the national Volvo customer care center that an appropriate form of shielding should be added to cover the wires controlling these systems to prevent an animal's access to them. To the best of my knowledge, this suggestion was ignored, as no special shielding was described/offered, despite the critical nature of these systems. This problem has never occurred with either of the other two vehicles which I regularly take to the same location, thus, I believe this is a design flaw in which either the materials used in these wiring systems are particularly attractive to whatever animal chewed the wires (e. G. Soy-based wire coating polymers perhaps), or more likely, the wires are not sufficiently shielded/jacketed to prevent such damage. In each case, since there was not a nearby Volvo dealership, I drove my vehicle back to the dealership from which I purchased it without functional safety systems.

12 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2007 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 01/18/2010

I pulled out from a parking lot onto a main street while it was raining. I thought there was enough of a break in traffic to safely pull out, but when applying the throttle with the front wheels turned, the wheels spun for a few seconds before I lifted off the throttle. Because my car had partially entered the lane with no room to back up due to a vehicle behind, the oncoming vehicle had to swerve around my car. The following day, I took the vehicle in for service at the local dealership and mentioned that the traction control did not appear to be working. This was my second complaint about the traction control (about 8,000 miles prior, my car could not gain traction while climbing a wet parking garage ramp). The technician found a faulty brake pedal position sensor and replaced it. My service advisor informed me that the faulty sensor caused the traction control and stability control to be off-line since. I am wondering why my car did not issue any type of warning that these two safety features were off-line. According to the situation described to me, the computer knew there was some type of problem with the sensor, so it disabled the traction control and stability control in response.

13 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2002 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 12/26/2009

I had 5 incidents while I was driving that my vehicle got out the control after noticed the anti-skid light message came on. I hear the same situation to other people as well. I went to Volvo about the anti-skid situation and they found and a factory fault in the brake control module that cause failure to the steering angle sensor. I know this is a factory failure and malfunction issue from Volvo. The part is available but they declined to be responsible about this matter.

14 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2005 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 09/01/2008

Intermittent abs/anti skid light. My brakes also seemed affected, particularly the stopping distance. After this problem happened to me about 6 times, I asked a service tech at my local dealer to find this is a common problem. Other people have reported brakes locking. After searching on the internet I found many owners of Volvos have suffered from this problem. It seems that the abs module is known for causing strange problems caused by malfunctions mostly due to cold solder joints. My car in particular is an '05 S60 2. 4 m with 118k mileage. At what point should a recall be placed on these units? an integral part of an abs system seem to be a major safety issue, does it not?.
