I purchased this car used December 16 2016 knowing it needed a lot of work. I have since gotten all the repairs done on Jan 4th 2017. I now need to get the car emission tested after driving 200 miles the readiness monitors are still not set and have since repaired the check engine light and still can not get an emissions test.

The contact owns a 2000 Volvo S70. While driving approximately 45 mph, the check engine light illuminated intermittently. Approximately three months later, the electronic throttle system (ets) light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they cleaned the ets. When the contact went to retrieve the vehicle, the ets light illuminated again and the vehicle was left at the dealer. The current mileage was 78,728 and failure mileage was 78,528.

At approximately 206,000 miles my car wouldn't drive over 40 mph, the engine would rev up on its own and sputtered throughout the reduced rpm range. Rpms would not go over about 3500. Check engine light came on. Drove it to Volvo dealer and they replaced the throttle body at an out of pocket cost to me of approximately $1,000. They stated that it would have been covered up to 200,000 miles as this part had a recall. I do not feel that I was adequately notified of the recall. I received a letter about a recall last year and called the dealer to ask what it all meant since I did not understand it. The dealer said it was just a software upgrade and would only take about five minutes. I took the vehicle in for that software upgrade in March of 2007 with less than 200,000 miles on the vehicle and they did not say anything about the etm / throttle body issue. It should have been replaced at that time.
1998 Volvo S70 t5-vehicle intermittently, without prior indication will cease to operate while traveling. Engine light will come on and engine will hesitate and then shut down. Occurs generally 2 or 3 times in a day or two and then maybe not again for a month or so. Three different Volvo repair shops have been ineffective in diagnosing. . . Failure has occurred on high speed arterial roads as well as while idling/ stopped .
2000 S70 - multiple repairs and multiple recurring incidents of this same problem! check engine light comes on, engine runs rough, tach bounces and power deminishes becoming a sever hazard in high speed traffic. Dealer found the problem to be "known issues" with the electronic air mass and throttle systems. Replaced twice while under warranty, extended warranty denied, shortly out of warranty and problem returns again. Dealership nor Volvo will take any corrective action on >$1000 repair (which according to the service tech is almost guaranteed to return). This is my third Volvo, and certainly my last.
Since owning this vehicle the check engine light has illuminated on numerous occasions and fault codes for the engine have been entered. I even had the mass air flow sensor replaced during one of these episodes. But during the past 7 months I've had engine problems that have affected the driveability of the vehicle. Periodically, after the engine has been running for 30+ minutes, the vehicle will have problems idling (feels like it will stall) and then black smoke will start emitting from the exhaust. The check engine light does not come on during this process but only when the car is once again running normal. This problem is an intermittent one. The vehicle will run fine for 2 weeks and then suddenly the problem will reappear. Since this problem began, I've had the mass air flow sensor replaced (twice--three times in total since owing this car), O2 sensor replaced (twice), cleaning of intake and throttle plate, throttle body replaced, upgraded software for the electronic throttle control (etc) and spark plug replacement. None of these have fixed the problem. The dealership has had my car for days at a time. They have recently been able to recreate the problem but the computer readings are not showing any problems with the engine components. My car is still at the dealership and the problem still has not been solved.
The contact stated that 1999 Volvo S70 experienced the same problem with stalling while driving under 40 mph. The engine light was coming on and the car was uncontrollable. The car would shake and jerk, speed ahead and slow down. T the contact took vehicle to the dealership and they replaced the fuel throttle body, put in new spark plugs, and reprogrammed the computer. The car has since then ran well. The contact stated that this happened a year ago. The repair cost for the contact was almost $1,000. 00. The contact has been in touch with Volvo dealership, and they told him that they have not heard anything about recall. The Volvo manufacturer said that there was an investigation on the car, and to call the NHTSA. The contact has also filed a complaint with Volvo.
We purchased the Volvo 2000 S70 vehicle in 9/01 with 25,000 miles. A 30,000 mile check-up was performed by santa monica Volvo on 12/26/01. Steven and I began a 14-month road trip around the us and had the vehicle maintained at Volvo dealers throughout the country (the check engine light periodically came on and we would ask the dealers about it. We were told not to worry about the light. ) the road trip accounts for the accrued miles put on the vehicle in such a short period of time. Returned to California 3/04. Brought the vehicle into santa monica Volvo to have the 75,000 mile check-up. They did the check-up and we drove away. The ets and check engine light came on within one mile, car began to jerk, called the dealer and immediately returned the vehicle. Sm Volvo did the diagnostics but did not know why the ets light came on as we drove away. These things happen, they said. Sm Volvo explained that certain codes came up, they would reset the computer (code ezm#91a7 on the throttle unit) and download a new program. They would be able to repair it by doing additional work and did not guarantee the computer reset. We asked if the repair would be guaranteed or could we drive off again and get the same results. They could not guarantee that it would resolve the issue. This led us to believe that everytime we approved them to repair the problem, it would continue to occur. Not guaranteeing that they can resolve the problem made us consider more research and/or a second opinion. We decided to leave the dealer without repair. We have driven the vehicle locally since then, but with many failures. Alot of jerking, sometimes the engine shuts off and I have to sit for 5 minutes before the engine will turn on again. The vehicle currently has 82,000 miles. We have only driven 5,000 in 16 months. We are only using the vehicle for errands and work. We do not want to give the dealer free reign over charges and repairs that they cannot justify or guarantee.
Engine will run like it's flooded. Resulting in loss of power. Prior to vehicle shutting down, check engine light came on. The dealer is repairing vehicle again, and has repaired vehicle twice before. Manufacturer has been notified.
