98 Volvo S70; experiencing a loss of power and stalling; I've had two mechanics look at my vehicle and no one can pin point the problem. I went to my local dealership, dick dyer Volvo on August 2nd and they can not look at my car until August 19th. As a mother of a young child, it is frightening to pull out into heavy traffic. I emailed corporate Volvo on 8/3/05 and haven't received a response. This had been a recurring problem since Feb 05; about every 1-2 weeks my car will stall when I begin to slow down at a light.

The vehicle was losing power, it shuts down. Usually it will start back. Can cut across traffic, and it will just stall. Took it to the dealer many times, and they could not duplicate the problem. They put different parts on it to narrow down the problem. There is no power steering after it stalls. Back in January the turbo went it out and they replaced it. The vehicle was still skipping. This started happening around January 15, 2005. The abs control module was replaced.
The contact stated that 1999 Volvo S70 experienced the same problem with stalling while driving under 40 mph. The engine light was coming on and the car was uncontrollable. The car would shake and jerk, speed ahead and slow down. T the contact took vehicle to the dealership and they replaced the fuel throttle body, put in new spark plugs, and reprogrammed the computer. The car has since then ran well. The contact stated that this happened a year ago. The repair cost for the contact was almost $1,000. 00. The contact has been in touch with Volvo dealership, and they told him that they have not heard anything about recall. The Volvo manufacturer said that there was an investigation on the car, and to call the NHTSA. The contact has also filed a complaint with Volvo.

Abs/tracs failure.
I owned a Volvo S70 2000 model with a variety of maintenance issues related to stalling and surging. I had to pay for a new throttle module, air mass sensor and throttle cleaning. I believe this cost over $1000 on parts that should have been designed to last far longer than they did. . Read more...

Failure and its consequences.
When the vehicle was being driven, the abs light illuminated. The vehicle has had this problem more than three times in the last three weeks. There was a technical service bulletin concerning this problem. The warning lights indicated a problem with the abs and the 4 tracking system. The consumer suggested that this might not have been valid due to a possible defect in the electrical module.
Electronic throttle control replaced. Problem is starting to recur. Damage effects other car systems which may have to be replaced according to dealer.
While driving on the highway (just normal highway driving), I lost control of the car - the gas seemed to stick and the engine revved up and then the car just shut down. It seemed to stall. This happened twice before it took it in for repair. I took it to the dealership and they replaced the electronic throttle system for $2,000. It has not happened again but during other routine maintenance it was found that the throttle system was not functioning properly so it was replaced for a second time.
We purchased the Volvo 2000 S70 vehicle in 9/01 with 25,000 miles. A 30,000 mile check-up was performed by santa monica Volvo on 12/26/01. Steven and I began a 14-month road trip around the us and had the vehicle maintained at Volvo dealers throughout the country (the check engine light periodically came on and we would ask the dealers about it. We were told not to worry about the light. ) the road trip accounts for the accrued miles put on the vehicle in such a short period of time. Returned to California 3/04. Brought the vehicle into santa monica Volvo to have the 75,000 mile check-up. They did the check-up and we drove away. The ets and check engine light came on within one mile, car began to jerk, called the dealer and immediately returned the vehicle. Sm Volvo did the diagnostics but did not know why the ets light came on as we drove away. These things happen, they said. Sm Volvo explained that certain codes came up, they would reset the computer (code ezm#91a7 on the throttle unit) and download a new program. They would be able to repair it by doing additional work and did not guarantee the computer reset. We asked if the repair would be guaranteed or could we drive off again and get the same results. They could not guarantee that it would resolve the issue. This led us to believe that everytime we approved them to repair the problem, it would continue to occur. Not guaranteeing that they can resolve the problem made us consider more research and/or a second opinion. We decided to leave the dealer without repair. We have driven the vehicle locally since then, but with many failures. Alot of jerking, sometimes the engine shuts off and I have to sit for 5 minutes before the engine will turn on again. The vehicle currently has 82,000 miles. We have only driven 5,000 in 16 months. We are only using the vehicle for errands and work. We do not want to give the dealer free reign over charges and repairs that they cannot justify or guarantee.
Car began running poorly, stalling on occasion and hesitating to accelerate. Upon servicing the car, the dealer informed me that the electronic throttle body was bad and needed to be replaced. When I took it to the dealer for replacement, they cleaned it instead. I subsequently returned to have it replaced. The dealer discounted the replacement cost by the amount I had paid for the earlier cleaning.
(1) no warning (2) car ran only in "limp-home" mode (3) car towed 125 miles to dealer, and etm was replaced; dealer kept old part.
12 volt adapter needed to use hands free cell phone as required by law in new york & most other states failed due to design defect.
In early October 2003 the electronic throttle system (ets) light appeared on my car's panel. This affected the drivability of the vehicle. I purchased an additional warranty for my vehicle when I bought the car in may 2000. The dealer indicated that my warranty would not cover this problem and that it would cost approximately $900 to repair it. I declined the service. The light continues to come on frequently (I. E. , every 2nd or 3rd day of the week). When this happens, I will pull over and turn off the car for a moment. When I start it up again, the light does not appear and drivability is normal. As a Volvo owner for the past 17 years, I have not experienced any similar malfunctions. I have owned a 1982 Volvo 240, a 1992 Volvo 240 and my current Volvo S70. I would appreciate if you would research this malfunction to determine if you have received (or the manufacturer) complaints from other Volvo owners. Thank you for your help.
My cars electronic throttle had to be replaced. This was done under the warranty period but I'm writing to make you aware of this for the benefit of the people whose cars systems lasted slightly longer, out of warranty. Volvo knew they had issues with defective throttles and should stand behind their product. These cars are not cheap and owners should not be 'beta' testers for new systems.
I am writing just to supply additional information regarding your ongoing investigation pe05041. During the first few years that I owned my 2000 Volvo S70 glt se, I experienced several electronic throttle control failures, which grew progressively worse. The vehicle would suddenly lose speed when accelerating and be unresponsive when the gas pedal was depressed. The car was still under warranty when these failures occurred, so Volvo replaced the electronic throttle control mechanism at no charge. To date, the replacement mechanism has not failed, but I would be interested in knowing what the average failure age of the replacement parts has been. I have two small children who are frequently in the car with me.
I purchased my 1999 used S70 in June of 2001. It had approx. 47,000 miles on it. Within a week or two the electronic throttle control module had to be replaced due to the loss of speed, etc. Within 1 year I had to replace the turbo and the whole engine due to malfunctions. In all, I have spent about $9,000 in repairs to this car due to engine problems. It has been the absolute worst car I have ever owned. It has also had numerous electrical malfunctions since I purchased.
I purchased a 1998 S70 Volvo from suburban Volvo in troy michigan. I took the car in for repairs for the air conditioning before the warranty expired. I was told to return if the a/c leaked. I was looking for a physical leak, which I later found out there is no physical indiciation of a problem. I returned the car on two more occassions to the dealership for the same problem. After the warranty expired, I was told that the a/c had a leak and I had to pay $1,400 to have repaired. I explained to the suburban dealer that I felt I should not have to pay for the repairs because the car was sold to me with a leak. To further add to the story, I had taken the car in to be repaired for a recall on the lights. I am not sure if the recall was for the headlights or tailights. While in the shop, I inquired about the headlight wipers not working. I was told I needed to purchase a headlight motor at a cost of about 4 or 5 hundred dollars because the car had been in an accident. I was told no it had not been in an accident. I found out later (after the tire rod broke while being driven) that the tire rod had been damaged in an accident. I had repaired at a cost of 800. 00 which I paid. Is there any type of relief for me since the car had been in an accident prior to me purchasing the vehicle? the a/c is not working, the check engine light constantly comes on, the driver side window doesnt work at all, the headlight wipers don't work at all. The a/c and headlight wipers have never worked properly since I purchased in February 2001. I have written the owner of the dealership and Volvo of north America (vna). The dealership never responded. Volvo of north America did respond and told me there was nothing they could do. Vna shared I had to work it out with the dealership. Have been reading that the check engine is an ongoing problem with some Volvos. The electrical system is presenting problems also. Do I have any recourse after owning the car since 2001?.
Vehicle has electrical/brake and engine problems. Brake pedal has a clicking noise, and after the third click, brake pedal locks up. Also, engine failed twice. Failure a result of the engine flooding itself, ruining the spark plugs. Dealer does not know what the problem is. Engine was replaced. Brakes will also occasionally sink into the floor. These problems still exist after being repaired twice. In addition the electrical system has failed several times--the turn signals went out, both headlights have gone out, and the gear shift panel lights have gone out.
Electrical problems since shortly after purchase of vehicle, to dealer 25 times. Dashboard light would come on, indicating that headlights were not working when in fact they were. Dealer stated vehicle had a bulb and socket problem, taillight bulb failed, signal lights flash very fast, side signals sockets and bulbs shorted, 4 running light contacts melted, front headlight shorted, left front headlight inoperable, and bulb indicator illuminated. Door locks inoperable, windows would not go up, master window control switch faulty, and speakers distorted. Seat belt plastic part cracked. Transmission sticks on lowe gear, happened twice. Gas light comes on even when tank is full. Washer fluid inidcator illuminated, washer jets inoperable, wiper blads replaced, right side mirror did not adjust all the way out. Front and rear brake pads worn, rotors replaced, brakes cause screeching noises. Engine light illuminated, cable under engine loose. Humming noise while driving, dealer replaced right front hub, left and right front stabilizer links. Mudflaps loose. Evap valve replaced.
Electrical s. A. S. Relay causing engine cooling fan to stay on.
This car has a hx of electrical problems. As you can see, both headlights have burned out(at night) as have the brake lights. The left turn signal operated at a different sequence than the right one. We have information that these light failures are somewhat common with this model. . Our safety concerns are obvious. Th e manufacturer has not proposed any solutions other than replacement of the bulbs. This is not satisfactory as there is apparently a major electrical problem.
Erratic transient chemical fumes in passenger compartment, smells like hot plastic, dealer has not been able to replicate, however radio replaced twice, antenna motor replaced twice, sixteen bulbs (some with sockets) replaced since 6/98, all possibly related to overall electrical system problems.
1. 12/23/car died in slow freeway traffic; restarted after 5 minutes, but "check engine light" stayed on. Diagnosed as problem with air mass sensor, which was replaced. 2. 11/11/right rear door lock failed; motor replaced. 3. Each of front headlight bulbs burned out with less than 15k in mileage. 4. 1/13/rt and lt outer tail lights burned out; bulbs were replaced. 5. 3/3/right turn signal began flashing too quickly; both rt and lt turn signal sockets were replaced. 6. 4/28/tailights again failed, sockets and bulbs were replaced; 7. 4/29/left turn signal flashing too quickly (even though socket had been previously replaced on 3/3/99 to deal with anticipated corrusion problem). My wife and I have have had more service problems with this car than in 25 years of owning all of our other cars combined.
Consumer has had problem with vehicle stalling. This is a problem with the throttle module. The consumer was told that eventually the vehicle would shut down.
Volvo S70 with acceleration, deceleration and stalling issues. The consumer stated the etm was replaced on August 26, 2008 under warranty. Since then, the consumer has experienced acceleration and deceleration problems while driving, forcing her to make repeated trips to the dealer in an effort to identify and resolve the issue. The vehicle has stalled and decelerated on the freeway. The consumer stated the vehicle has been unreliable since August 2008. The dealer has been unable to fix the problem. They cleaned the throttle and pulled all the codes, to no avail.
Due to a problem within the electrical system bulbs in the headlights/tail lights and signal lights prematurely blew out. Please give any further details.
