A batch of metal used for the steering wheel trim prematurely wears down at the base of the steering wheel in 2 locations out of sight with normal use and becomes razor sharp. When turning the wheel, the spinning razor edge can cause the driver to lose control due to sudden pain due to slicing into the fingers. The metal slices into the skin drawing blood much like that of a papercut. I have experienced sudden cuts in turning on 2 separate occasions recently having to re-grab the steering wheel due to involuntary pain reflex release to prevent total loss of control and the problem has not been confirmed by the dealer. There is no prior warning when this issue suddenly occurs.

Most concerning: front driver door latch quit working while driving leaving door to swing open during traffic. This is a known issue that led to recalls of other Volvo models (2011 - 2017), but the S80 was excluded. It was a terrifying ordeal that has now happened twice (during freezing conditions here in colorado). Less concerning to me but a problem: the blindspot monitoring system malfunctions and keeps on blinking even when there's nothing in the blindspot - which betrays the reason it exists.

The warning, charging failure service urgent is displayed the service engine light comes on. Several mechanics have not be able to repair. The front passenger seat belt is not stable to fasten properly. The tmps has yet another warning, inoperable.
Both of the key fobs I have are broken in that the key won't lock straight out or stay folded into the fob. The weight of the plastic fob alone frequently causes the key to twist backwards if the road is bumpy or uneven, which kills the engine and makes it extremely difficult to steer to safety without power steering. The first time this happened to me I was traveling at 55 mph on a crowded highway but fortunately I was in the rightmost lane, not in a curve, and was approaching an area where I could pull over to safety. I have had to duct tape both keys in the open position to prevent this. The situation is much worse if additional keys or other weight is added to the ring. It is possible to insert a broken key in a way that causes the weight of the fob to hang away from the driver but large road bumps or accidental interference from the driver or passengers can cause it to flip backwards anyway. These incidents are alarming and confusing for the driver, particularly the first time, and could easily cause an accident depending on the conditions. I am not the only person who has experienced this issue, and it will become even more common as these vehicles age.

The front windshield is leaking, such that the driver's side front and rear floors flood, even with a light rain. Enough water comes in that the padding, carpet, floor mat and rubber floors mat are all under water. When it rains, we see water droplets and water trails on the inside of the windshield. The windshield is original and has never been replaced. We've never had a car that leaked like this and don't expect that cars should turn into small swimming pools inside when it rains.

My wife karen was on her way to work on February 24, 2020 when the driver side-view mirror detached, hit the pavement and shattered. The incident occurred at about 7:45 am. The vehicle had been parked in our driveway at 140 statesir place for 60 hours without being used and the mirror showed no sign of damage prior to being driver. The incident occurred about 800 feet from our residence as she was turning from statesir place onto pine street nearer to the corner .
My car lurches forward when you are idling as well as driving. I was on a busy street when I pulled out into an oncoming line of traffic when the motor completely died leaving me in the middle of both lanes of traffic. After a time I was able to restart the vehicle. This has also happened in bumper to bumper highway traffic. As you are idling at an intersection or awaiting a train to pass, the motor races and then slows and also lurches ahead. Foot must be hard on the brake or I could rear end the vehicle in front of me. This vehicle has only about 65,000 miles and I have no idea why this is happening. It has been a great car until this started happening. The car is now sitting in the driveway as an unsafe condition is caused by this malfunction.

While driving alone in the rain from spotsylvania, va to clemson, SC to attend my daughter's nursing white coat ceremony, our 2016 S80 sunroof exploded and shattered on I-85 south near kannapolis, nc for no reason. The time of incident was around 11:15am. It had been raining and traffic was stop and go on I-85 with speeds about 30-35mph when the sunroof suddenly exploded, sending pieces of the shattered glass flying off behind my car with smaller shards of glass coming down through the inside sunroof retractable vent with drops of rain. I immediately pulled into the far right lane to get off hwy to access the damage and find some cover as it was raining and coming inside sunroof. I had no idea where I was or what state I was in until I pulled off the exit and immediately found a shell gas station which also had ample roof cover. I got out and saw that more than half of our sunroof was missing and there were tiny pieces of glass laying on top of the inside part of sunroof and along the back part of the roof and trunk. I called our auto insurance company, usaa, and they took car of the rest.

Windshield leak. After a recent rain storm (April 2017), the passenger side carpeting was soaked. Took the car to my local Volvo dealership and they verified the windshield seal was leaking (unsound) at the top. They referred me to a local auto glass company who told me they have seen this on several Volvo's where the seal was not properly bonded at the factory. I have searched for recalls, bulletins, etc. But have not found any information regarding this defect. If in fact it is a factory deficiency I believe I should be reimbursed for the repair or replacement of the windshield.

On November 9th my wife was driving our 2001 Volvo S80 to church. She parked the car but it began to move. It accelerated and she wound up driving into a tree to avoid hitting other cars. She was also worried that children from the school might be around. The car was in park. The engine was off. The emergency break was on. The steering wheel was tight, making it difficult to steer since the engine was off. The church secretary observed the incident. She saw smoke coming out of the back of the car which would indicate the emergency break was on. When she first reached the car with my wife in it she noted that the car was in park.
When the vehicle warms up from start it will not move forward or reverse it started at like 30 miles and I parked the car till I could get it fixed now when the car just warms up (not gets hot) it will not engage trans I have on more senser to check but the car will move when you first start it both forward and back but when it warms up it stops.

Sunroof blew up, or spontaneously combusted. Was not hit by an object, loud sound was heard prior to the incident. Car was in motion at the time, going about 60mph. Conditions clear, cool temperatures not very hot or cold outside.
My Volvo S80 spontaneously combusted in my driveway, when I was away from home. The car had not been driven for approximately two hours, when it caught fire (under the hood) and burned.
I was driving from los angeles to las vegas stopped at barstow CA (half way between both cities) to refill gasoline went back to the car and could not make it start message read "steering locked try again", had to towed it back to las vegas (150 miles) $$$$$, took it to Volvo dealership where I bought it 3 months prior, long story short , I had no warranty now the dealer wants about $1300 to replace a $150 part!. Want to know if there is a recall on this vehicle for this particular situation? please help. !!.
I was driving and my car lights and all the electronic stop working and turn off.
The chrome trim on our console has peeled back very slightly and has a very sharp edge it has cut our hands multiple times and has took out chunks of our skin it is very painful and unnessary we have had the car brand new a dealer demo since December 2013 we are very unhappy because we have been loyal Volvo customers since 2005 we hope Volvo will recall these vehicles and fix them appropriately because Volvos are not cheap cars and we love are car execpt the fact our hands are getting severely cut.
I was driving on the highway at approx 3pm. My 11 year old son was also a passenger in the vehicle. I was on wide open highway - no storms - no vehicles on the highway near me. All of a sudden, there was a loud noise, sounded like a bomb exploded. I felt sharp pieces of glass and saw glass in the compartment of the vehicle, looked up and the sunroof had shattered. I first attempted to slide the glass all the way back so that the glass would not continue to fall and cut us. Then I realized that was not a good idea so I closed the sunroof back and the closed the cloth roof covering. I had to was able to drive the vehicle to pick my daughter up from her location and get us home safely. The following day, I took the vehicle to Volvo to see if this was covered under my extended warranty or if Volvo would pay since their vehicle was defective. The service manager of Volvo of charlotte called me a liar - said that this would not happen unless something hit the vehicle. I explained to this guy that nothing hit the veh, I was on wide open road - good sunny weather with no vehicle in sight. He continued to call me a liar. Called my insurance company to report the claim to have it on record and for possible subrogation rights .
Vehicle has been hesitant, sputtering and surging when stopped or increasing speed. When stopped the vehicle surges and moves. This can be very dangerous, as we can hit a vehicle in front of us. The etm has been cleaned by collins auto in SC. They told us that it needed to be replaced with a few thousand miles. There is build up in the throttle body and this is due to the oil change interval (7500 miles) which is recommended by Volvo. This is a safety issue and a part defect which Volvo should fix and replace at their cost.
Tps tire pressure sensor complete failure, total loss of air pressure in right front tire. Unit fell into the tire, northern states salt corrosion. Continental part #pa66 gf30 oem part for Ford motor company.
This model Volvo uses a switchblade key, and due to a defect in the key, it does not lock in the extended position when the key is opened. The large plastic key handle dangles down below the ignition when driving. On more than one occasion, the driver's knee bumped the key fob and turned off the car while in motion. This has happened on the highway as well as local road. Both keys that were provided with the car are affected the same way. This is exceedingly dangerous in what is otherwise a very safe car.
Tires:pressure monitoring and regulating systems 21 Jul 2013 - Sunday evening the tire low pressure warning light came on when I parked my car in the garage. I looked at all four tires and found nothing wrong. 22 Jul 2013 - Monday as safety precaution I took the vehicle in for service and had the sensor checked. The Volvo service department stated; they check the pressure in all tires for leaks, proper inflation and the light went out. 23 Jul 2013 - Tuesday morning on my way to work the light came back on. Again; I looked at all four tires and found nothing wrong.
My car shows exact symptoms of the vehicles involved in NHTSA recall # 09v483. Recall involved cars in the hot weather states of us. At the time of the original recall I have resided in the massachusetts which was not included in the initial recall. I have moved to arizona in the summer of 2010 and now my car is smelling gas as recalled vehicles. Tried to contact Volvo dealers and thy are stating since my VIN is not in the database of recalled vehicles they will not perform repair ( unless I will pay full price of course ).

The chrome foil decoration on the steering wheel trim is delaminating, causing a sharp edge where the foil has pulled away from the plastic substrate. This is happening at the outside edge of the steering wheel, where the hands come in contact with it. In the course of driving the car and turning the wheel, the sharp edge has cut my hands and those of my wife on several occasions. The dealer says that this is a chronic problem and that the manufacturer is unable to keep up with the demand to replace the defective part. The part is on back order and our vehicle is still not repaired.
This is my second defective rear-view mirror within one year. This computer auto-darkening mirror again has permanent black lines affecting viewing and the dealer and Volvo company claim the warranty is 3 months. Evening use is unsafe due to the inability of the mirror to reflect traffic. Instead, safety is compromised. The dealer and Volvo corporation refuse to acknowledge this is an equipment defect and they truly should know that such equipment ought to last the lifetime of the car. It is an equipment malfunction and defect and is a safety issue because the viewing cannot be accurate and clearly reflected. Help.
Volvo vehicles sudden speeds increase there is a air-box problem which causes the engine to accelerate, and vehicle to lunge forward. Speeds the engine.
When driving the transmission shift slams / bucks for 2nd to 3rd gear at the 20 to 30 miles per hour. The transmission revs and then bang’s into the next gear. This also happens when slowing down and coming to a stop, you can feel it bucking / jolt (as if it was slipping) as I apply the brake. I had reported this to the Volvo dealer several times and they said that nothing came up on the codes or diagnostic equipment. I had the transmission overhauled too in April 2013 and it ran good for about 12 months and that back to same symptoms / issues. I also brought it back again around August/September 2014 time frame to have the software updated and explained the transmission shifting problem and again no fault codes. My concern is that when driving the vehicle it could be a hazard if trying to accelerate quickly or trying to stop quickly and it does not respond as it should and an accident occurs, and a possible fatality could result. I also did speak with Volvo customer services and register a complaint with them. This is not my first Volvo, I have owned Volvos since 1988. Please advise of findings and resolution.

At 70mph my car said reduced performance, and within 30 sec. My cruise control failed, the car reduced to 5mph, and there was no acceleration. I was in 5 lanes of rush hour traffic doing 70-80mph. An eighteen wheeler skidded approx. 50 feet in order to avoid hitting me. He then had to block off two lanes of traffic to assist me to the shoulder. My car would only coast. It was a near death experience for me. I'm thankful my children were not with me. After being turned off over night, my husband attempted to drive it to the Volvo dealership. He experienced the same. We were told that it was due to a computer chip malfunction. A chip which controls the throttle, fuel-injection, and cruise control. Wow! the service rep. "we haven't seen anymore problems after replacing the chip". We asked why has this not been recalled. The rep. Said "there have to be so many accidents and fatalities reported, before they will recall it". This has left me very disturbed, and reluctant to ever drive a Volvo again. I feel sure if it hadn't been for my quick use of the hazard lights, it could have been fatal. The truck driver also concurred. I do not want this to happen to anyone else. They may not be so lucky.
