2 Power Train problem of the 2019 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 11/27/2024

Three incidents have occurred in three months. Unintended acceleration incident #1. While turning right after a full stop on an uphill incline, the vehicle accelerated so quickly that the steering wheel couldn't be return to the neutral position before hitting a roadside signpost approximately 25 ft away. The impact was severe enough to cause the right front headlight to be broken, the right front wheel well liner to be ripped out, the right a-pillar to be dented, and the right mirror to be ripped off. No physical injuries occurred. Unintended acceleration incident #2, six weeks later. While on the same incline as incident #1, after removing my foot from the accelerator, the vehicle continued to accelerate, even during braking. Total time was approximately 2 sec. There was no damage to the vehicle, and no physical injury. I checked, and the floor mat was locked in place. Both incidents were reported to Volvo, and permission was given to extract data from the vehicle. The data was extracted at a Volvo service center. Unexpected acceleration incident #3 (after data extraction, before Volvo report). While turning right and into a parking space in front of a sidewalk and coming to a stop on an uphill incline, the vehicle quickly moved forward approximately 2 ft after my foot was removed from the brake. I was able to brake again to regain control and put the car in park. Unexpected acceleration incident #4 (after data extraction, before Volvo report). While traveling on an uphill incline, after removing my foot from the accelerator, the engine remained at a high enough rpm to sustain forward motion. Even after full-stop braking, the vehicle would move forward on its own, on an uphill incline, without depressing the accelerator. After incident #4, Volvo reported that they concluded that the vehicle was operating as designed at the time of their inspection and during a test drive, that no fault codes were found, and that no unintended acceleration was observed.

3 Power Train problem of the 2020 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 05/01/2023

- back left axle went loose with the back left wheel while driving, causing the car to rotate 45 degrees, scratching the ground. Once the car drifted back horizontally, I used the brakes to stop the car. Multiple pictures show the defect. Back left lights where the axle went off and the wheel is not broken, showing no collision. Liquid escaped from the bottom. Available for inspection and photos as well. -had I not been able to use the brakes after the car rotated sideways, we would have crashed. This could have caused major injuries to us and/or others. -the police inspected the car and didn't qualify it as an accident since they said no damages, other objects, or vehicles were involved. The manufacturer's local shop made a 4 lines and inaccurate report to qualify it as an accident falsely. If there were an accident, lights would brake before the axle and there was no pothole -there were no warnings. It happened suddenly.

5 Power Train problem of the 2022 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 12/15/2022

I have recently experienced several episodes of the vehicle suddenly going into "limp home" mode while either accelerating onto or driving along at highway speed, causing a sudden loss of drive-ability and endangering me and my vehicle as well as those other passengers and vehicles traveling near me. I have taken it to the Volvo dealer in norristown , PA where I purchased the vehicle new less-than a year ago, and they said they have never seen the "transmission acceleration performance reduced" dash warning with the "turtle shell" icon or the dtc codes before, however, there is much discussion of this issue on the Volvo forums, and I respectfully request that you urgently look into this dangerous issue!.

6 Power Train problem of the 2023 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 10/15/2022

Four times in the last five days as I was braking for a red light or braking as I entered a drive thru, the engine surged and revved to between 3000 rpm and 4000 rpm. I had to use all my power to brake the car and I then put it into neutral, or shut off the car. Within a few seconds or upon restarting the rpms were back to normal. I did not push on the accelerator by mistake. The car only has 300 miles so I took it to the dealer. The engine had no codes and they had me drive around with the service manager but all was fine. On my way home the same surging, increased engine revs happened again. Luckily I’d read a lot about “unintended acceleration “ so I knew enough to just brake firmly and place the transmission in neutral.

7 Power Train problem of the 2018 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 10/02/2022

Have brought car twice for vibration and shutter when vehicle is driven on highway. The shutter is extreme and only stops when car comes to a dead stop at an intersection or toll. Increasing speed or lowering speed does not stop the extreme shutter felt in wheel and passenger compartment. Car has only 37,000 miles on odometer! this extreme vibration and shutter is intermittent and not all the time. This problem has been previously reported to NHTSA as propeller shaft front head on awd system. Portland Volvo has done alignment on 10/10/22, but could not find reason for shutter/shimmy. Brought car back to dealer on 10/27/22 and they found nothing. Bringing car back to dealer on 11/16/22 for same problem.

10 Power Train problem of the 2017 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 01/28/2018

Constant problems/failures with start/stop function. Car's electrical system will completely shut down for no reason while in traffic and engine will not restart. Car has to be shut off and system has to be re-booted. Dealer service dept can find no problem. Most recently, car's starter motor failed and had to be replaced under warranty by the dealer. Having the car's engine start/stop system constant fail is a serious safety risk. We had serveral near-miss accidents caused by this failure. The work around has been to manually disable the start/stop function, which has to be done each time the car is started for the first time.

11 Power Train problem of the 2015 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 01/16/2018

Since purchased, engine dies, does not respond to throttle. Taken to dealer several times, escalated to Volvo. No codes, no trouble found. On Tuesday vehicle stranded in intersection, no power. My wife desperately pumped the accelerator with no reaction until at last the engine came to life, allowing her to clear the intersection. This was a near miss accident. This is the third near miss. Volvo factory technician declared no failure on the basis of a test drive, and no codes.

12 Power Train problem of the 2016 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 06/08/2016

On Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at 10:00 a. M. , I put my car in park on my driveway. My car was stationary on my driveway when I exited it and went into my garage. When I turned around, my unoccupied car was coming toward me from the driveway into the garage. I was unable to get out of the way of the car and ended up pinned between the left wall of my garage, a recycle can, and the car. Fortunately, the car was rolling into the garage in a straight line, which left just enough space between my body, the car, and the wall; otherwise, I would have been crushed and killed. A large recycle trash can and a ladder stopped the car before it continued straight through the rear garage wall and into my family room where my disabled husband was sitting. A workman on my property, who witnessed the entire event, helped me get out of the space between the wall and car and removed the car from the garage. I must have been in a state of shock from the accident because I cannot remember some details and must have been hit by the car because I still have damage to my left leg and pain in my lower body; also, the car had damage to its left fender. I visited my doctor regarding the injury to my left leg and the pain to the lower part of my body. My husband notified Volvo about the incident. The company had the car towed to its facility where it was run through a battery of tests. Even though the company claims that it found nothing wrong with the car and took no responsibility for the incident, I think that it is still important to report this incident in case it happens to someone else in the future. My unoccupied car moved forward from a stationary, parked position. I would not have been able to exit my car if it were placed in any other gear than park.

13 Power Train problem of the 2014 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 01/01/2015

The contact owns a 2014 Volvo Xc60. The contact stated that the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of engine oil. The awd system light was illuminated, and the message “awd disabled” was displayed. The maintenance light was illuminated. Additionally, there was an abnormal knocking sound coming from the front passenger’s side of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where the dipstick and gasket were replaced, but the failure recurred. The dealer provided the contact with the cost for the diagnostic test and the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted by email and mail, but no additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

15 Power Train problem of the 2012 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 02/23/2012

Uncontrollable acceleration, overriding brake: unexplained accident occurred as I had pulled into angle parking slot, foot on brake ready to shift to "park" . Suddenly the car unexpectedly accelerated forward about 5 feet and lurched into the wooden parking barrier that delineates the edge of the parking lot, cracking it. Engine was revving. I shifted into reverse to get back into parking spot (foot on brake necessary to shift into reverse) and car accelerated backward totally out of my control, only stopped after backing into car parked on opposite side. Passerby said he heard the engine revving from the other side of the lot! at this point I shifted into "drive" and, with car now under my control, returned to original spot. I refused to drive car again when police asked me to show what had happened- had it towed, Volvo USA technician reportedly found nothing wrong with the car, ( the report is an internal Volvo document not available to me). This was a frightening, horrifying incident, with rapid acceleration occurring both forward and in reverse, despite foot on brake. Car is equipped with multiple safety features. People could have been hurt- luckily no one was. Over next couple of weeks, I went over every possibility, but must conclude it was a malfunction of the car.
