1 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2019 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 11/27/2024

Three incidents have occurred in three months. Unintended acceleration incident #1. While turning right after a full stop on an uphill incline, the vehicle accelerated so quickly that the steering wheel couldn't be return to the neutral position before hitting a roadside signpost approximately 25 ft away. The impact was severe enough to cause the right front headlight to be broken, the right front wheel well liner to be ripped out, the right a-pillar to be dented, and the right mirror to be ripped off. No physical injuries occurred. Unintended acceleration incident #2, six weeks later. While on the same incline as incident #1, after removing my foot from the accelerator, the vehicle continued to accelerate, even during braking. Total time was approximately 2 sec. There was no damage to the vehicle, and no physical injury. I checked, and the floor mat was locked in place. Both incidents were reported to Volvo, and permission was given to extract data from the vehicle. The data was extracted at a Volvo service center. Unexpected acceleration incident #3 (after data extraction, before Volvo report). While turning right and into a parking space in front of a sidewalk and coming to a stop on an uphill incline, the vehicle quickly moved forward approximately 2 ft after my foot was removed from the brake. I was able to brake again to regain control and put the car in park. Unexpected acceleration incident #4 (after data extraction, before Volvo report). While traveling on an uphill incline, after removing my foot from the accelerator, the engine remained at a high enough rpm to sustain forward motion. Even after full-stop braking, the vehicle would move forward on its own, on an uphill incline, without depressing the accelerator. After incident #4, Volvo reported that they concluded that the vehicle was operating as designed at the time of their inspection and during a test drive, that no fault codes were found, and that no unintended acceleration was observed.

2 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2018 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 10/03/2024

When I had to slow down or suddenly stop because there were other cars in front of me, I. Stepped on the break, but it did not stop; maybe it slowed down a little, but the acceleration seemed to accelerate faster. I could hear the acceleration sound. I had to push the gear to stop. The car finally stopped. But I almost hit the front car. Similar occurrences happened when I came to a stop signal, which could have involved me in a serious accident, even fatal. I still drive the car because I have only one car. Most of the time, it works normally, but the problem occurs occasionally. I am scared, thinking it will happen again.

3 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2022 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 06/10/2024

Case number 240821-000271 was opened on 8/21/24 with Volvo car USA support. I have three main concerns: 1) the infotainment system losing the favorites that I have saved in the sirius application. This had been an intermittent problem that I had been having since I purchased the car. I finally took it into the service department at Volvo cars of gilbert on 1/7/23 for this problem (invoice number vocs110975). The service department was unable to recreate the problem so they did nothing. 2)a complete car system reboot while I was driving on 6/10/24. As I was driving down the road the hvac system shut off and the dash and infotainment system screens went blank. All car systems completely shut down except the engine. This was an extremely frightening experience as all of this happened with no warning whatsoever while I was driving. This is a huge safety issue! within about a minute of driving like this the systems started to come back up. I proceeded home. The next morning I took the car to Volvo cars of gilbert again. They had the car for 5 days and performed a software update on the ihu (infotainment head unit) (invoice number vocs120164). 3)the failure of the infotainment system to update after starting the car and driving. This happened on 8/7/24 and I took the car directly to Volvo cars of gilbert again. The infotainment system was stuck on “infotainment system starting…” for the entire 12-minute drive to Volvo. Volvo cars of gilbert had my car for 8 days this time and this time they did a reload to the existing ihu (invoice number vocs121204). I asked that they replace the ihu. Volvo refused to replace the ihu because it was too expensive at $3200. Also, the problem of the infotainment system losing its radio favorites has become much worse. It happens daily now. I believe there is an opportunity for a catastrophic event to happen while I am driving if this ihu problem is not corrected immediately.

4 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2019 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 12/24/2023

The speedometer stopped working - no numbers were visible on my dash. It was unsafe as I was not aware what speed I was traveling. This happened on December 24, 2023 and has not happened again after that nor was it reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or service center. The vehicle has not been inspected by anyone. There were no warning lamps/messages/or anything.

5 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2023 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 05/15/2023

I've experienced many problems with the google built in system in this Volvo. But the one that keeps happening is the speed sensors. The car is supposed to read traffic signs, including speed signs and alarm when exceeding the posted speed limit. It does not work. For example on i66 east bound in virginia, the speed limit is not 80mph, it is either 60, 65 or 70 if using the express lanes. The Volvo keeps showing the speed limit on this interstate as 80, see attached images showing speed limit sign at 80. Complained to Volvo, they blamed google. Complained to google, they blamed Volvo. Other roads have the same sign recognition. The car infotainment & safety features randomly shut down, or fail, while driving and the vehicle has to be reset often. Back up cameras quit working while backing up sometimes it will not go into reverse without shutting off the car or doing a reset.

6 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2022 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 02/01/2023

I purchased the car in April 2022. Did not have any issues until February 2023. Initially, the engine light came on with a turtle icon in the dash screen. I was driving and the car would not go over 45 mph. On a busy street . The car was hesitating badly and also said something about the propulsion? Volvo ontario towed it from my business and supposedly fixed it. Fast forward the following week, engine light came. Back to dealer, who said the software at that time was not available and it was a recall. A few days later they said they were disconnecting the engine light until new update was available. Back to dealer with update now installed, supposedly this would fix all the engine issues. A few days later, 3/7 I got into car and started it . This mesage came on, "slow down, the vehicle will reduce speed. Propulsion system failure", followed by ,"propulsion system service required" with yellow engine light on. Backed out of the driveway and the car started vibrating and shaking violently. Currently waiting on Volvo for next steps. I am so dissapointed with this car and it is a huge concern for safety. I purchased this car because of their reputation for safety.

7 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2022 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 12/29/2022

The screen does not come on, so no heat, no safety stuff, no reverse camera and no sensors. All the above adas features do not work either. This is definitely a safety hazard, which I think traces back to the vehicle operating system. Details reported to Volvo in this tweet--> https://twitter. The entire vehicle shakes and vibrates violently at 50 mph and over.

9 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2015 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 05/12/2019

Took car through the car wash. As I was slowly exiting to park into a spot to vacuum the car, I took my foot off the accelerator to drive up to the spot and started to put my foot on the brake when the car by itself revved up the acceleration jumped over the curve even as I was literally standing on the brake pedal to get the car to stop. Finally it did stop and thankfully there was no-one in front when this happened. I have called the dealer to check whether there has been any recalls and was told that none have been issued. I need to leave the car for them to inspect it which I plan to do. I did a little research on the internet and have found several complaints identical to mine. It was a very terrifying moment.

11 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2018 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 03/04/2018

My wife and I picked up our new Volvo Xc60 t8 a week ago and we tried the park assist pilot function for the first time last night in our apartment's garage. We turned on the park assist pilot for perpendicular park as we looked for a parking spot. After the central monitor indicated a spot has been found, I put the gear in reverse as advised and placed my foot on the brakes as the car begins to do its job. The car backed up and attempted to turn into the parking spot; however, it accelerated and turned so quickly that before I could react, the back bumper and left brake lights have hit the column beside the parking spot. There has been no indication of any obstruction when it was backing and turning into the spot. In reminiscent, I think the only thing I could've done was press on the brake sooner; however, the backing and turning occurred so abnormally abrupt that there was no time to react. My wife and I both agree that the movement was so sudden and fast that it felt like the car was out of control. The fortunate thing was that we did not hit any other car or people or damage our building's structure. After the incident, I do not feel confident about the park assist pilot feature and will not recommend others to use it. We hope this report will lead to an investigation of the vehicle's park assist pilot system and prevent more serious accidents from happening to others. Even though drivers are advised to put their foot on the break during its use, it would be very helpful if the reverse speed could be automatically restricted to the advised 4mph. Additionally, the car has already been equipped with many sensors that prevent collisions during driving and manual parking. These sensors can readily be used to sense obstruction during park assist pilot and stop the vehicle when they are triggered. However, they have failed in our case to prevent the collision.

12 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2014 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 08/27/2013

The volume level of the lane change warning signal is extremely soft and largely undetectable with background road noises. This presents a safety issue as the driver is not alerted to inadvertent lane changes as he/she should be. I came pretty close to having an accident since I had expected the alert and it did not occur at a volume level that I could hear. (I had a 2010 Volvo Xc60 with this same feature but the volume level of the lane change warning was much louder). The Volvo dealer confirms that the volume level of the lane change warning is not user nor dealer adjustable; it will require a software upgrade by Volvo. I have informed Volvo customer service of this issue. They say they are aware, but could not provide any date for the software upgrade to fix this important issue. Some urgency needs to be provided in fixing this as it is a significant safety issue.

13 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2010 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 05/01/2009

2010 Volvo Xc60 surged on three occasions while stopped at a red light. The consumer stated the first time the incident happened, the vehicle began to move forward and the tachometer reading was 2500 rpm. The light happened to turn green before the vehicle went any further. The second time, the same thing happened. The third time, while at a red light, the vehicle surged and the tachometer reading was 4500 rpm. The consumer placed the gear in neutral and the tachometer increased to 5500 rpm. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but they were unable to find a problem. Since the vehicle was a lease, the dealer gave the consumer another vehicle, same make and model. However, the replacement vehicle also surged while stopped at a red light and shot forward into the rear of another vehicle.
